C.J.'s Fish and Chips in Scarborough

The most disgusting meal I've had in a long time. Chips were brown and soggy. Grease everywhere. Maybe it's about time you gave a damn about your customers and you might think about changing the oil. Probably hasn't been changed for years. So many staff on here, with half of them outside smoking or on the phone. Absolute kip of a place. Avoid avoid avoid!

This place is a shambles ! Ordered fish and chips , pie and chips a curry sauce and beans. We were left waiting for 20 minutes while the young girl stood around eating chips and scrolling her phone. After 20 minutes the fish and chips , beans and curry were brought out . 10 minutes later I'm still waiting for my husbands pie and chips I asked her to take mine as they going to be cold . Another 10 minutes passed and I was served a fresh fish and chips sauces and the pie. The pie was rock hard , overcooked and served with over cooked greasy chips. The fish was disgusting hardly any fish and covered in greasy batter and the chips were revolting they went in the bin! Avoid ,avoid, avoid at all costs !!!!!

The best fish and chips I’ve had, especially the curry sauce. Fish is a large portion. Hot and fresh onion ring. Compare to other tourist places, this restaurants is a very lovely place.

Not very good. Very greasy fish and overcooked chips. Staff have a very bad attitude. Overpriced. Not a good experience. I will not eat here again. There are far better options in Filey.

Best fish and chips in Filey without a doubt! We try and sit in when possible but plenty of places to sit near by for a takeaway. Special mention to the potatoes they use for the chips

Proper fish n chips ,lovely batter,beautiful white haddock,proper tasty brown full flavoured chips. Portions were generous,all fresh cooked,had lunch today with kids n grandkids, ordered a full sized portion for a supposedly " very hungry grandkid"!!! Proprietor was more than happy to provide packaging, we're going to have one very pleased Spaniel tonight,lucky dog I say. Thoroughly recommend, I prefer to eat mi fish n chips outside, but bent to tired kid syndrome for a sit down. Best fish I've had in ages,

Reading the reviews for CJ's it appears that the chips they serve seem to divide opinion in a similar manner that Marmite does. Personally we love them and always have some when we land in Filey.

Got takeaway food and it was good value and tasty. Staff were friendly. We all enjoyed them

Original Review 2022: Ordered at the hatch for takeaway. Really good sized portion. The chips were delicious. Service was fast and very pleasant and friendly. First time here but won't be the last, after some bad experiences from other chippys in the area. Definitely recommend UPDATE: Newest Update 2025: Had chips from here over Easter Weekend and it was still a great portion, tasty, staff were friendly and curry sauce is so nice!

Wow......... beautiful fresh fish, just falls apart, and proper yorkshire chips, had the small fish & chip which were ample, included tea and bread & butter, and even brought hubby a bowl of scraps. staff fantastic with the service and tables quickly cleared away, AND dog friendly which is a BIG bonus, definitely we will be returning. A massive 👍 up

Me and my son will only come here when we visit Filey. The fish and chips are beautiful with big portions, the chips are cooked to perfection not that just Cooked beige you get at most fish and chip places and the prices are decent. Would recommend to everyone

Had fish n chip and chip butty. Chips were slimy, greasy, horrible things, neither of us could finish them. Curry sauce wasn't much better, very odd. Staff didn't seem that bothered. The worst fish and chips we've had for ages.

Glorious food and brilliant service. My friend had looked it up and instead of getting food from the sea front we walked up to CJs. We ordered the regular cod and chips and it was massive! Waitresses were lovely and friendly and service quick and efficient. As we ate, we noticed people around us leaving but didn’t realise they had closed! Sat there until 3pm and the place shut at 2! Nobody asked us to leave, felt awful but they couldn’t have been nicer. Just left us to it! Couldn’t have asked for a nicer fish and chips lunch in a lovely place. Highly recommend. Thank you!

Just what I needed after a busy few days travelling. Top notch fish and chips.

Visited whilst on holiday and had a takeaway . Was busy and took a long time for order to be ready think we waited about 30 minutes and it was cold and windy waiting on the street . I did say to my sister these better be the best fish and chips I've had , and they were excellent . Chips were a lovely dark brown colour not pale and undercooked and fish was also lovely nice crispy batter . Couldn't fault the food at all could just be a bit quicker . Would definitely go there again if in Filey . Don't think you could get nicer fish and chips

Excellent fish and chips. Normally go elsewhere, but ended up here as it is open a little later and everywhere else was shut. Got two lots of fish and chips, one with curry sauce, and headed down to the seafront to enjoy on a bench. Batter was still crispy by the time we sat down to eat, and it was a delicious meal. Will no doubt be returning next time we're in Filey.

Fast service even though it was packed, really good fish and chips, and nice waiters. I have been a few times before and has always been very tasty. Would recommend.

This place is an absolute shambles. I’m not one for complaining but this place was awful. Ordered a pizza and chips and got a Chicago town pizza that was microwaved. The chips were brown, way too overcooked and just disgusting. Ordered a side of bread and butter for £1.80 and got one slice of bread!! Spoke to a member of staff and she couldn’t have been nicer but spoke to the owner outside in his Mercedes and he just laughed. No apology or nothing just laughed. Absolutely disgusting way to be with customers. The one star doesn’t reflect on the service and the woman who served us couldn’t have been any nicer but the owner of the shop has just totally taken away from that. Avoid it at all costs.

This place was recommended by someone in a pub, but these have to be probably the worst chips I have ever had. Greasy, soggy and overcooked. I actually threw half of them away. Even a one star rating is too good. I suppose I should add that the bloke who recommended the chippy did say that when they're good, they're the best. BUT when they're bad they're REALLY BAD. But I certainly will not be buying anything from this place again

This place is great for a nice family tea! I ordered fish & chips and gravy on the special, it came with bread and butter and a cup of tea just under £24! Fantastic value for money! The kids meals we ordered were good sized and came with a pot of beans each. The batter was crispy and a beautiful taste, no other fish will come close to this batter now. The chips were nice, a nice brown colour not like the anemic white ones that other fish and chip shops use! Tea was piping hot. Staff were very accomodating and couldnt do enough for us. All happy and smiling lovely people. Overall 12/10 will definitely be going back and i can assure you all this is the best fish and chips shop i have ever been to.

The fish is to die for! Not pale chips like others use they are a nice colour and taste fantastic. The gravy is absolutely stunning! Staff kind and helpful couldnt do enough for me and my family. No fish and chip shop near me comes close to this one. If your in filey, try it! I promise you wont be disappointed!!!!

I've never had chips like it! There are a lot of chippys nearby and we were lucky to stumble into this one. Amazing!

Awful - dark brown soggy chips, I’d have been embarrassed to serve it! We’re local and won’t be going back. They started switching off the lights as we were finishing our food. If they were closing they shouldn’t have let us come in and sit down to eat. A waist of money. There are definitely better fish and chips to be had in Filey.

30+ minute takeaway wait for.... Hands down the worst chips I’ve ever tasted. Weirdly brown, limp, and tasted like they’d been reheated in fryer oil from the 1980s. No crunch, no flavour, just sadness. Even the seagulls turned them down. The fish? So oily I thought I’d accidentally ordered from an offshore rig. I didn’t know whether to eat it or contain the spill. If you’re hungry for disappointment and a side of indigestion, this place delivers.

The worse fish and chips that we have ever had...ever, the batter was dark and greasy, the fish was hard and over heated, had been cooked probably hours ago,certainly didn't have to wait whilst being freshly cooked like most other shops, the chips were even worse,had a couple of bites and had to throw them away, we should have refused to have had them in the beginning when I didn't think that they looked right

The chips were black, uncooked and greasy. Inedible. So disappointed I can't tell you. The worst thing is we were waiting 10 minutes. Maybe we were unlucky? And sometimes they are ok. Take your chances

Pretty disappointing overall. Fish was ok if not a bit over cooked and overly greasy, but the chips were genuinely the worst fish and chip shop chips I've ever had anywhere in the country. They were brown, overcooked burned and really greasy. We were left with a horrible taste in our mouths after. Probably haven't changed the oil in months. Not a particularly comfortable atmosphere eating inside either.. We got out as soon as we had finished. With so much other choice in town, I'd give this one a miss and go elsewhere.

Good value traditional fish and chips. Moist fish crunchy batter. Mushy peas or curry sauce, your choice. The Pensioner's Special, fish and chips mushy peas or beans tea bread and butter still good value at £12.

Fish n chips for us, they were great! Proper chips and fresh fish in crispy batter, not the soggy stuff but very nice! Good coffee and dogs welcome, infact not just welcome but the lovely lady in there bought them a little pot with a chopped up sausage in it 😁 I totally recommend this place!

Chips are divine, fish was white and flakey delicious 😋 Dog was welcome. I think we paid someone else's bill but no complaints as meal was worth what we paid happy to recommend

Fish was freshly cooked and batter nice and crisp, chips were perfectly cooked/nicely browned as they should be. The prices are very reasonable and portions good. Staff were all very hard working and polite, couldn't fault anything.

What a find! And dog friendly too! We had the "special offer" - haddock, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and mug of tea , all for £11 99 ! Fish was fabulous and the chips were the best I've ever had! Staff are polite and friendly, we will definitely be back.

Have had take out from here before and it was excellent but on a cold February day we opted to sit in. We had our dog with us - no problem. Food ordered and delivery fairly quickly. Quality of EVERYTHING was superb, even a decent strong cup of tea! We paid £11.99 each for a bundle lunch, haddock (skinless), chips, peas (or beans), tea (or instant coffee) and 1 slice of bread and butter. The main event could rival any fish and chips I’ve had anywhere, very fresh beautiful chunky white fish, crisp light batter and PERFECT chips! I even raved about the mushy peas. I only wish they offered mint sauce (sadly not). But nothing about this eatery deserves less than 5 (or more) stars based on our visit today. Loved it.

Best fish and chips in Filey by far

We visited Filey on Friday as a treat for my daughters birthday. The weather was cold and windy, and we were keen to find a dog friendly fish and chip staurant. A friend had recommended a couple of places, but we found that our dog wasn't welcome. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because we found CJ's We were given a wam welcome as was our dog. Our waitress was fast efficient friendly and helpful. The chips took us back to our childhood in the 50's when chips were a healthy brown colour and crisp on the outside. As a bonus the prices are very reasonable for good food, and friendly efficient service. We will definitely visit again when we visit Filey again. Margaret, from York.

The chips were brown, rotten and disgusting. How can you be a fish and chip shop and serve manky chips, Excessive grease on the fish that has leaked through the box onto my expensive jeans, not happy.

An impromptu visit from York to Filey yesterday, most fish and chips places closed for the season I guess but then saw CJ’s, brilliant. Parked opposite and over to takeaway! Bought 2 lots of fish & chips, and 2 coffees. Lovely staff, friendly. Really good fish ample portions and great chips! Served in box, wrapped well, carrier bag. Great service. Couldn’t have been better! Parked by the seafront and thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you CJs made our day!

Passing through and visited via the takeaway window. Ordered Large fish and chips x2 and shared a portion of peas. Food was lovely but fish was definitely not a large one and the general portion size was pitiful. Left and called a McD's on way home as we were both still hungry. Would definitely not bother again.

We stopped here for lunch and were treated to the best fish and chips I have had in a long, long time. Their "Special" was Haddock or Cod, with chips, side (beans, peas, gravy or curry sauce), bread and butter and a cup of tea all for £11.99. A pensioners equivalent (smaller portions) is available at £9.99. The former is what I opted for and, as I have said, was the best fish and chips I have had in a long time. The fish is chunky and tasty and is battered with a light batter as opposed to the usual stuff that I am sick of after 2 minutes. The chips are beautifully cooked in beef dripping, which is something you see less and less of these days ever since Greta Thunberg convinced idiots that eating less meat will somehow offset China's continued industrialisation. They also have tastiest gravy. My Dad only wanted chips and gravy, and within a few minutes I was suffering some serious gravy envy. It was excellent. It might be out of a supermarket packet for all I know, bit if it is, it's a supermarket packet that I'm yet to come across! The seating is decent too. From the outside C.J.'s looks tiny, but down the narrow walkway past the till, you will find a pretty good selection of seating. They also have high chairs, should you have a small person who requires one in tow. It was a cash only establishment on the day we visited. I don't know if this is their usual business model, or whether their technology was having an off day. I hope they are a cash only business. Cash only businesses are refreshing. Filey isn't a huge place and there aren't as many fish and chip places as you'd think, so I am doubly glad that we found C.J.'s. Give it a try if you are in town.

Stopped by here to grab our dinner en-route back to Haven - Primrose after reading other reviews and really glad we did! As other reviews have said, the portion sizes were good, not overly greasy and the service was friendly and quick. We had Spam Fritters (recommended), large fish and chips, mushy peas, gravy, sausage and chips, curry sauce and the staff even kindly gave us a box of scraps. It was delicious and would definitely come back here again if we were more local!

Absolutely fantastic lunch at CJ's today. We both had the haddock special with peas and got a free doggy sausage for the dogs. The fish was perfectly cooked, the chips just the right amount of crispy and the peas hot and plentiful. The lady who served us was lovely, really polite and friendly. We will definitely go back

Called in yesterday whilst visiting Filey following a friend’s recommendation - glad we did. It was really, really nice. Service was excellent from the staff - warm and welcoming. Food was cooked fresh and to order - again, superb. The place was immaculately clean and clearly very popular as we got there at 1155hrs and got a table and ten minutes later the place was full. Easy to see why with great service and great food. Dog friendly too and our dogs were made very welcome. It’s easy to see why there were so many repeat visitors. Highly recommend and will return again.

First experience of the food here was a take away, wandering along the front in the sun. Returning this year, we sat in as it was gloomier outside. Sometimes returning to a great memory is a mistake. Not so this time. Unpretentious, with booths and tables, the friendly cheerful service brought our food and drinks quickly. The portions good, and freshly cooked The batter crisp and crunchy, golden and beyond criticism, the fish succulent and tender, cooked perfectly. Good chips too. When you have simple food, it is essential you get it right. This place does, and many don't. My favourite place to eat fish and chips on the Yorkshire coast that I have found.

My husband and I came into this cafe by mistake, having intended to go to a different one, but we're very glad we did! The haddock and chips, with mushy peas were fantastic, staff were friendly and the place was clean and relaxed with nice old photos of Filey on the walls. Will definitely visit again next time we're in Filey.

Myself and my family had severe food poisoning after eating fish and chips here, violent vomiting and my son was covered in hives from poisoned fish contacted shop who said it must be a sickness bug you all had, said owner would contact me but hasn't, I've contacted environmental health they are investigating avoid this shop at all costs not safe food!

English fish n chips served in a proper English style. Employing family and locals. Half the price of the nearby holiday park chippy and twice as good. Dogs very welcomed, and a proper English cup of tea. We went out of season. And you can basically park outside for free. The beach is just down the hill. A few hundred metres. We got the pensioner special. 10 quid for fish and chips, bread and butter and a brew. + 1 beans or curry or gravy or beans. The dog got a free sausage also.

Ordered 2 x fish and chips to take away. They served us but said they were about to close. They gave us green and black chips and hid them under the fish. Pure grease. Only went there as the Google reviews were good. Won't be going back.

Dog friendly lovely staff Made to feel very welcome

I had to leave a review for these fish and chips because the lady running it was so good! We sat inside and the waitress was so kind and helpful to get us all sat down (4 adults, a toddler with a pram and a dog) The waitress explained we could have the pensioners meal if we wanted or the kids meal etc basically whatever would work best for what we wanted between us. My little girl was whinging while we were all looking at the menu so the waitress brought her a small plate with some chips on to keep her occupied! I’ve never known anything like that before. The food was spot on, the fish was 10/10! The waitress also gave my little girl a homemade bun after our meal, she was just so lovely and welcoming. We will definitely be back 😊
