C.J.'s Fish and Chips in Scarborough

Have had take out from here before and it was excellent but on a cold February day we opted to sit in. We had our dog with us - no problem. Food ordered and delivery fairly quickly. Quality of EVERYTHING was superb, even a decent strong cup of tea! We paid £11.99 each for a bundle lunch, haddock (skinless), chips, peas (or beans), tea (or instant coffee) and 1 slice of bread and butter. The main event could rival any fish and chips I’ve had anywhere, very fresh beautiful chunky white fish, crisp light batter and PERFECT chips! I even raved about the mushy peas. I only wish they offered mint sauce (sadly not). But nothing about this eatery deserves less than 5 (or more) stars based on our visit today. Loved it.

What a find! And dog friendly too! We had the "special offer" - haddock, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and mug of tea , all for £11 99 ! Fish was fabulous and the chips were the best I've ever had! Staff are polite and friendly, we will definitely be back.

An impromptu visit from York to Filey yesterday, most fish and chips places closed for the season I guess but then saw CJ’s, brilliant. Parked opposite and over to takeaway! Bought 2 lots of fish & chips, and 2 coffees. Lovely staff, friendly. Really good fish ample portions and great chips! Served in box, wrapped well, carrier bag. Great service. Couldn’t have been better! Parked by the seafront and thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you CJs made our day!

Passing through and visited via the takeaway window. Ordered Large fish and chips x2 and shared a portion of peas. Food was lovely but fish was definitely not a large one and the general portion size was pitiful. Left and called a McD's on way home as we were both still hungry. Would definitely not bother again.

We stopped here for lunch and were treated to the best fish and chips I have had in a long, long time. Their "Special" was Haddock or Cod, with chips, side (beans, peas, gravy or curry sauce), bread and butter and a cup of tea all for £11.99. A pensioners equivalent (smaller portions) is available at £9.99. The former is what I opted for and, as I have said, was the best fish and chips I have had in a long time. The fish is chunky and tasty and is battered with a light batter as opposed to the usual stuff that I am sick of after 2 minutes. The chips are beautifully cooked in beef dripping, which is something you see less and less of these days ever since Greta Thunberg convinced idiots that eating less meat will somehow offset China's continued industrialisation. They also have tastiest gravy. My Dad only wanted chips and gravy, and within a few minutes I was suffering some serious gravy envy. It was excellent. It might be out of a supermarket packet for all I know, bit if it is, it's a supermarket packet that I'm yet to come across! The seating is decent too. From the outside C.J.'s looks tiny, but down the narrow walkway past the till, you will find a pretty good selection of seating. They also have high chairs, should you have a small person who requires one in tow. It was a cash only establishment on the day we visited. I don't know if this is their usual business model, or whether their technology was having an off day. I hope they are a cash only business. Cash only businesses are refreshing. Filey isn't a huge place and there aren't as many fish and chip places as you'd think, so I am doubly glad that we found C.J.'s. Give it a try if you are in town.

Stopped by here to grab our dinner en-route back to Haven - Primrose after reading other reviews and really glad we did! As other reviews have said, the portion sizes were good, not overly greasy and the service was friendly and quick. We had Spam Fritters (recommended), large fish and chips, mushy peas, gravy, sausage and chips, curry sauce and the staff even kindly gave us a box of scraps. It was delicious and would definitely come back here again if we were more local!

Absolutely fantastic lunch at CJ's today. We both had the haddock special with peas and got a free doggy sausage for the dogs. The fish was perfectly cooked, the chips just the right amount of crispy and the peas hot and plentiful. The lady who served us was lovely, really polite and friendly. We will definitely go back

Called in yesterday whilst visiting Filey following a friend’s recommendation - glad we did. It was really, really nice. Service was excellent from the staff - warm and welcoming. Food was cooked fresh and to order - again, superb. The place was immaculately clean and clearly very popular as we got there at 1155hrs and got a table and ten minutes later the place was full. Easy to see why with great service and great food. Dog friendly too and our dogs were made very welcome. It’s easy to see why there were so many repeat visitors. Highly recommend and will return again.

First experience of the food here was a take away, wandering along the front in the sun. Returning this year, we sat in as it was gloomier outside. Sometimes returning to a great memory is a mistake. Not so this time. Unpretentious, with booths and tables, the friendly cheerful service brought our food and drinks quickly. The portions good, and freshly cooked The batter crisp and crunchy, golden and beyond criticism, the fish succulent and tender, cooked perfectly. Good chips too. When you have simple food, it is essential you get it right. This place does, and many don't. My favourite place to eat fish and chips on the Yorkshire coast that I have found.

My husband and I came into this cafe by mistake, having intended to go to a different one, but we're very glad we did! The haddock and chips, with mushy peas were fantastic, staff were friendly and the place was clean and relaxed with nice old photos of Filey on the walls. Will definitely visit again next time we're in Filey.

Myself and my family had severe food poisoning after eating fish and chips here, violent vomiting and my son was covered in hives from poisoned fish contacted shop who said it must be a sickness bug you all had, said owner would contact me but hasn't, I've contacted environmental health they are investigating avoid this shop at all costs not safe food!

English fish n chips served in a proper English style. Employing family and locals. Half the price of the nearby holiday park chippy and twice as good. Dogs very welcomed, and a proper English cup of tea. We went out of season. And you can basically park outside for free. The beach is just down the hill. A few hundred metres. We got the pensioner special. 10 quid for fish and chips, bread and butter and a brew. + 1 beans or curry or gravy or beans. The dog got a free sausage also.

We were in Filey yesterday for a day trip, went to CJ's for lunch time and had Haddock and Chips Special £11.99. It was the best fish and Chips we have had in a long time. the service was exceptional, friendly and fast. Will really recommend a visit for anyone visiting Filey. Thank you CJ's for a lovely lunch.

Ordered 2 x fish and chips to take away. They served us but said they were about to close. They gave us green and black chips and hid them under the fish. Pure grease. Only went there as the Google reviews were good. Won't be going back.

Dog friendly lovely staff Made to feel very welcome

I had to leave a review for these fish and chips because the lady running it was so good! We sat inside and the waitress was so kind and helpful to get us all sat down (4 adults, a toddler with a pram and a dog) The waitress explained we could have the pensioners meal if we wanted or the kids meal etc basically whatever would work best for what we wanted between us. My little girl was whinging while we were all looking at the menu so the waitress brought her a small plate with some chips on to keep her occupied! I’ve never known anything like that before. The food was spot on, the fish was 10/10! The waitress also gave my little girl a homemade bun after our meal, she was just so lovely and welcoming. We will definitely be back 😊

The Best Fish n Chips in Filey.

Called in one lunch time, made very welcome by the smiling staff and showed to our table. The food came very quickly. I can’t remember the last time I had a fish like it, absolutely delicious!

Don’t go anywhere else other than CJ’s Fish and Chips in Filey. Food was fantastic, service was amazing. Such good value for money. Crispy batter, fresh fish its tail was still swishing. Chips and gravy and curry were just delicious. Thanks so much for having us over for lunch xDMx

I think with the choice of fish and chips shops in Filey try else where. We left under whelmed. Fish was great and a decent size. Chips far to crispy and worst I have had in a long time. Bread nice. Peas cold and untasty.

Slice of bread and butter £1.20 ?? Cup of tea rather than a pot ?? Poor quality cold chips ?? Horrible experience, go to Ingram’s for extra £1 , how to places like this stay in business???

We both thoroughly enjoyed our fish chips peas eaten in CJ's. In the past have had our fish and chips elsewhere but I have to say our meal tonight was really good. Fish was really fresh and white and the batter cooked to perfection, the chips were good- possibly could be slightly improved if a little more browned. Served with bread and individual pots of Lurpak butter. All the staff were friendly and polite. I would have given 5* had we not been bothered by an annoying fly buzzing round our table. Nevertheless we will be returning customers.

Once upon a time in a town called Filey there was rude, miserable woman who worked in CJ’s Fish & Chips. She wore no hair net. She told us to wait outside for 10 minutes as our table would be ready soon with high chairs. Little did we know she would turn out to be the villain in this story. We waited for 10 minutes, then 20, then 30. Eventually we were spoken to again by said woman who told us our table was almost ready. After a further 15 minutes we were whisked into the restaurant and separated from the rest of our group to eat. However, there were no high chairs. What were princess Elsie and Princess Bella supposed to eat in? We were pointed in the direction of the high chairs which were in a dark, gloomy corner and put them up as directed at the end of our tables. Within seconds this woman appeared again, her face red with anger. She shouted at us. ‘YOU CANNOT PUT YOUR HIGHCHAIR THERE. IT IS A HEALTH AND SAFETY HAZARD. MOVE. NOW!’ The party leader then reminded the woman that were told to put up the high chairs here by the staff and that we had made them aware of needing high chairs from the outset. ‘I DONT CARE, THIS IS HEALTH AND SAFETY RIGHT HERE’. We did not appreciate the attitude of this fairytale villain. We clicked our fingers and in a flash we left the restaurant to find our happily ever after (Cooplands down the road. 10/10)

Major attitude problem from some of the staff. If you want to be spoken to like poop on the bottom of your shoe, you’re in the right place.

Waited for a table for 45 minutes after being told 10. Only to then be humiliated and shouted at infront of the whole restaurant for their mistake in seating us. The lady was extremely rude after providing us with a high chair and telling us where to put it. Only to then scream at us. We left before even sitting down or looking at the menu. Would not recommend to anyone requiring a high chair as they class this as a health and safety issue due to their tiny, non family friendly, air conditioning lacking restaurant.

Excellent food and service, in a good location right in the middle of town. Everything you want for about fifteen pounds.

Loved the fish and chips in this little restaurant, which is behind the fish and chips takeaway counter. The haddock was very good, and was the scampi. Can definitely recommend - it’s. It posh dining, but it doesn’t need to be.

ordered fish and chips to takeaway (wrapped) found a bench and unwraped my meal. First impression was the fish batter looked very dark, on tasting, the batter was hard slightly chewy and the fish was very dry so thinking it was very overcooked.. As for the chips again looked very dark lots of black bits on them (not very nice either quite the opposite seemed undercooked) ... Suffice to say, will not be getting fish and chips from there again.. 👎

Not sure if I came on a bad day, but they were on par with the worst fish and chips I’ve had. The bar for any coastal town should be pretty high where fish and chips are concerned, and I have had better at home. I will avoid in the future.

We wanted chips to takeaway; we got the worst chips I've ever had in my life. Overcooked, limp, greasy, tasteless: how these weren't simply chucked away before they were served to customers is beyond me.

Worse chips I have ever had burnt left overs I would give it a miss if I were you they were better on the sea front don't know how they get away with dishing out garbage won't be back .

Unfortunately Browns was closed... reluctantly went to CJ . Had overcooked,greasy fish n chips from here before and still the same..Must remember to go to Filey when Browns is open

We didn’t even get to eat. The waitress in charge was disorganised and simply rude, trying to rush around my 86y.o. nan who needs a walking trolley, without giving her any chance to get herself sorted or seated while shouting at us. Whilst leaving she smiled at us, as if happy to not serve us.

Fifth visit to CJs chippy, We saw some reviews on Google, so made a special trip for lunch today. Our fourth visit was exactly the same as the first, excellent fish and chips, (large portions) the restaurant was very clean food was cooked to order. We were not disappointed, the fish was fresh and cooked to order, we sat in the restaurant and ordered the special, the portions were great, the service was excellent, everyone was very polite, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and would certainly recommend CJ's to everyone. Great value and large portions, a very tasty meal and satisfied our taste for seaside fish and chips. Staff were very friendly and attentive, welcomed us at the door and offered us to choose a table we wanted to sit at. They took our order quickly and hot tea arrived promptly after our order was taken, followed by our meal. We had the meal deal of haddock and chips, with peas for me and beans for my husband’s meal, plus bread and butter and a decent size mug of tea. Chips just as we like them, and fish nicely cooked, not over cooked. So much food we couldn’t manage the bread and butter. Great value as I said, all of that for £11.99 each. The only reason I give 4 stars for atmosphere is because there were a few flies buzzing around which we wafted away, and it was a bit warm sitting eating our meal. But really to be expected that a fly or two will come in when the door and serving takeaway window were open, these were definitely much needed as it’s warm in there as you’d expect with the friers cooking. And thankfully the flies had buzzed off by the time our food arrived.

Tbh we only went in here as it was miserable weather and they were dog friendly. I didn't realise you could dine in. So pleased we did. Lovely food, service and seating. It's going to be our go to chippie from now on.

We're not an affluent family, so fish & chips for dinner was supposed to be a big treat for us, on one evening of our 5 night stay. My 80 yr old Mum treated the 3 us with her pension funds, and it cost £25. We were all so bitterly disappointed. The chips were over-done, very greasy and soggy. The fish batter was crispy on the outside, but under-done inside. It seems like either the chips were too wet when put in the fryer, and/or the oil desperately needed a refresh. Had we parked and stayed close-by, we would have taken them back. A terrible waste of money. What a shame that establishments like this take advantage of tourists. I'd be embarrassed and ashamed if I was the owner. Its great that the cafe side is dog friendly. Staff were pleasant too. Hence 1 star, without this I'd have scored zero. Needless to say we won't ever be returning.

Very disappointing, over cooked fish and chips. Frozen fish NOT fresh and burnt chips only slightly saved by the curry sauce which I smoothed over my fish to conceal the taste. What’s wrong with the British seaside fish and chip shops, as touring caravaners we’ve experienced numerous outlets only to discover most are rubbish and CJ’s Filey hasn’t bucked the trend. Don’t go anywhere near this establishment as you’ll be disappointed. Come on shop owners get your acts together.

Had fish and chips June 24 and it was absolutely gorgeous, and very reasonably priced. Highly recommended.
