Great cafe, lovely food at a great price. We were served by a lovely lady called Linda, I had witnessed other customers being extremely rude to her yet she remained polite. All the staff were working really hard doing an excellent job. Thanks Lynne

Found by chance but cakes in the window draw you in like a magnet. Lunch chose a Quiche with Salad and a Sausage Roll with Black Pudding & Baked Beans & Pot of Tea. You choose a table then go to counter and order, staff very friendly. Price was good, food was excellent, finished off with 2 slices of coffee & walnut cake. Really loved everything about this traditional cafe / tearoom. On visiting the WC saw someone who had chosen the homemade pie with chips & gravy that also looked delish!

A friendly atmosphere and worth a visit or two, my wife and myself have been visiting Russell's since discovering it over 20 years ago while on holiday and have visited since, whether on holiday or a day trip. The menu is very generous both in main meals or sweet treats. Meal deals which include a drink ect. Plenty of condiments. It is a bakery so everything is fresh and good quality, the only problem is trying to choose what to have. Take away boxes for taking out treats. A good selection of ice-cream too. Clean toilet facilities.

A friendly slightly old fashioned cafe bit offering very tasty food at sensible prices. We just wanted a light lunch and so the small portion quiches, chips and salad was perfect for me. Mum reported that the small steak pie was generously filled and both meals were £8 each including our pots of tea. The cakes looked lovely but we were going out for afternoon tea so resisted this time but will be back. Friendly and fast service too.

Plenty of seating with decent space between each, clean and bright. We popped in for cake and a cuppa, lovely carrot cake great flavours. Orderbat the front of the shop and return to your table. I visit Pickering every couple of weeks to have a mooch around and I usually call in here for a cheeky breakfast. I love the great value breakfasts. Nicely cooked, hot and tasty. It's a friendly local cafe providing good honest food. It's not a gourmet restaurant, it's not posh - it's a cafe where you can get fed and enjoy a good pot of tea. I will keep returning because I happen to like it very much.

Yesterday, 14.06.21 we stopped here en route to Whitby. The window display looked fab with the cakes and pastries so we were confident of a great breakfast. Oh dear, the sausages were cheap mealy, definitely not meaty, likely no meat in them at all, the bacon was tough as old boots, I can’t say overcooked because that would have been crispy but this well, just hard and tough. Fried egg was ok, cheap white bread toast (no choice of brown) and one sloppy tin tomato and beans. Mushrooms (if asked for). Felt a bit cheated that glorious foody Yorkshire can offer up such mundane fare especially as I had been ‘bigging up’ the Yorkshire brekkie experience to my ‘first visit’ partner

Forget Thomas the Baker or Cooplands - this is the place to go to! The range of cakes is second to none with traditional favourites like double chocolate slice, carrot cake, lemon cake etc, as well as tray bakes and rather more unusual offerings, like the rthubarb and strawberry slice. Cakes are a generous size and cheap compared with other bakers. Quality is as good, if not better. They also do a range of savouries too - I found the sausage and apple roll a bit too garlicy for my taste, but the small steak pie was delicious. They open from 7.30 so this is a good place to get stocked up with supplies for a picnic.

Because of the current pandemic there were 2 queues, one for counter service and the other for the restaurant. We were told that there were tables at the back if we would like to make our way through, choose our food then order at the till. We did think the tables would have been more spaced, but we chose the one at the very back so felt ok there. My husband went to order the food and returned with our drinks and a number for our meal. He had also been asked to complete a form with contact details. The staff were very efficient and busy serving and clearing tables, most were wearing face masks or visors but one lady had neither (possibly because of a health problem) and also a man who was clearing tables. I asked him why he was not wearing a mask and he told me it was because they didn't have to if they weren't actually serving food. Shortly after our conversation he was wearing a mask, under his chin. The food when it came was fresh and enjoyable and good value for money.

Strange reading other reviews that say this place feels Covid secure. Visited several days ago for the first time in a few years and was quite uncomfortable with the social distancing in terms of tables. They were as crammed in as ever and people were almost touching. Every other cafe I'd been to in Pickering have removed or blocked off alternate tables, but not here. Other Covid securities were in place eg hand sanitiser so if they sorted the tables that would be a big improvement. This is the reason I selected 'poor' because it's a serious issue at the moment. The cafe generally is 'OK', probably best described as cheap and cheerful as the food is not the best quality but they are good prices and the staff are very friendly. I had a scone with jam and cream and it was tasty but the clotted cream was from a jar, not fresh. The display of cakes in the window *look* amazing and tempting but when you actually get one they're pretty tasteless so that was disappointing. There are so many lovely cafes to try for cake fans like me, e.g Goathland, Hutton le Hole tearooms or Bothams in Pickering itself. If you want a cheap fryup though, this is your place as the rest of the family were satisfied with their breakfast type meals.

I visit Pickering at least once a year, and Russell’s is always my first choice for lunch. It is very busy at peak times which is a testament to its popularity but it is all about timing. The two course menu offers a choice of main course, dessert and tea or coffee and is particularly good value. I usually have the roast beef - plenty of meat, a Yorkshire pud and a nice selection of veg. Desserts vary from lemon meringue pie to fruit pie or sponge. No it isn’t gourmet or Michelin star standard, but two courses and a drink for around a tenner can’t be beat. They also serve a lovely fluffy omelet with chips, and a delicious steak pie. On the bakery side, their sausage rolls and Yorkshire curds are the business!

We stopped in Pickering on our way to Whitby, as is our usual routine. Unfortunately our usual coffee shop,Two Burgate, wasn't open as it was Sunday. So we went into Russells intending to have a coffee and it was like stepping into 1920's timewarp. It is painted in the most foul dark green paint, with a traditional red terracotta tiled floor and felt totally depressing. Surely a cafe/bakery would be much better in a lighter colour? Went here on Sunday and decided to order the all in breakfast brunch meal. When it eventually arrived after about 20 minutes I presumed it had all been freshly prepared. How very wrong I was it was all barely luke warm and the sausages were the most disgusting tasting sausages I’ve ever had in my entire life the meat content of which must have been almost non existent. The rock hard two very small pieces of bacon had obviously been pre-cooked and were from a heated container. The two fried eggs were both overdone with hard yokes despite asking at time of ordering that I required soft yokes. The breakfast came without the grilled tomato and without the toast had to remind the waitress. Eventually arrived without apology and banged down on the table. Terrible attitude and extremely ignorant staff especially the old girl on the front counter who was nasty and ordering all the young girls around. Never again. Totally disgusting experience.

Shop and cafe. Two big steps up into dining area but there are two tables for wheelchair users below them. Bought custard slice and coffee and walnut cake. Both big portions. Cake had walnuts throughout the sponge as well as on top. Fresh orange juice and large filter coffee. Bought pork pie, black pudding sausage roll and two fruit cakes to bring home.

Solo lunch - lucky to get a table even at 12.15 on a weekday proving the popularity of this cafe. However, managed to get the last table near the pot wash which was a but draught. Ordered the special of tempura prawns which came with, sweet chilli dip, side salad, coleslaw, garlic bread and a hunk of bread and butter. I had also ordered a pot of tea. The food came after a short wait (unsurprising as they were very busy). The prawns were excellent, very light tempura batter and very tasty with the chilli dip). Don't think the extra bread is necessary as very filling and a great price at £7.50 for the whole order.

On our first visit to Pickering we called into Russells for coffee on arrival and gave into the temptation of a cake each. Perfectly good coffee b ut the cakes were wonderful - husband had a slice of tiffin that was packed with walnuts and I tried a fruit scone - delicious and very fresh. We were so impressed that several hours later we decided to stay on for a while so we could go back to Russells for a late lunch. Again, the meals were delicious and just what we wanted - breakfast brunch for hubby and a steak pie 'snack' for me. I've said since that if we lived in Pickering, I'd never cook at weekends!

Visited with hubby, teen and 4 year old for lunch. Basic, ‘no frills’ cafe (counter service but hot food brought to your table), very very clean and well organised. Food all piping hot, well presented and tasty. We had chilli con carne, kids sausage & chips, beef roast dinner and a prawn Marie Rose sandwich. Pastries and desserts behind the counter look lovely, home-made style. Excellent place to have lunch. We were all stuffed and enjoyed our lunch. Highly recommended.

Have you had a sausage roll? Sure you have. Have you had an amazing sausage roll? Probably you feel that you have. Have you had the BEST sausage roll though? If you say yes then you are wrong unless you have been to Russells in Pickering.

Popped in here for a takeaway sausage roll. I had a regular one, my husband had a pork and black pudding one. Both were epic! A must stop if you’re visiting Pickering. Friendly staff too.

I went here with my sister one day after a night out. We both had the breakfast. I'm quite a picky eater, i didn't have sausages, mushrooms or tomatoes and the staff didn't have a problem with it at all. The price was reasonable for what you get and you get a free tea or coffee with your meal so thats a bonus. Lovely place, very sanitary and higly recommended for anyone passing through.

The sausage rolls are amazing- we chose the Pork & Apple. Easily large enough for 2 to share. Great cakes too, appear to be home made. We would definitely visit again.

I tend not to give a bad review but I feel I must give my opinion on this place. Noticed it was busy we thought it would be decent, I had to dog with us so popped in and asked waitress if I could bring her in she snapped yes but sit there!, I take it this table must be the only dog friendly one, which by the way is right next to 5he cooking area. My husband wanted a steak pie deal which is advertised outside, steak pie , beans and gravy £3.50. I wanted soup and a toasted sandwich.. we ordered from the counter. The gentleman was under pressure but that makes no excuse for bad manners, I tried to ask for steak pie deal from outside board but was interrupted and pushed into getting the steak pie deal from the inside board which was served with chips, veg and gravy, with a pot of tea... I really wanted to say I didn’t want that but he swiftly asked if that was it, I ordered mine ,, he then said just 1 drink ? And I then ordered coffee... when food and drinks came there was no cutlery or teaspoons but I noticed other customers going to a unit and getting there own,,,, which I also did,,,,, soup was cold, toasty was ok.. hubbys pie was nice but chips and gravy were awful... I’m sorry but I won’t be back and doubt I’d recommend this place either,, I understand in busy times you may feel rushed or agitated but a please or thank you go a long way..
