Very good, by far the best curry I have had in a long while. Good service. Staff very friendly. Toilets clean. Very large selection menu.

Superb food, excellent service. All the staff were professional and Khukon looked after us so well. Must go back to try other dishes.

We travelled into Hertford for the weekend and found this restaurant on the web as we were not familiar with the area. From the moment I telephoned to book our table for two the service and reception was outstanding. We arrived in good time for the seating and received a very warm welcome at the door, we were offered drinks in the bar area then when we were ready we were shown to our table. The food we could not fault in any way, it was so delicious and served with great service and the servings plentiful and a great amount of choice . The building is quaint but not small, with beamed ceilings and the atmosphere was very enjoyable. The staff paid a particular interest in our reason for visiting and made us feel very welcome and not just a number. Sammy was so helpful and friendly he deserves a mention here too. Even the ladies room was immaculate. Just a shame we do not live near to the restaurant or we would frequent this restaurant often, we do hope to make the effort to return in the future even if we have to arrange an overnight stay, it is worth it. By far the best Indian Restaurant I have ever been to. I have no connection with this restaurant personally or know any of the staff personally, this review is unbiased and is 100% genuine based on my own experience of my visit Saturday 11th May 2024.

The Ruby is a wonderful restaurant, beautifully decorated, fabulous menu with a huge choice of absolutely excellent dishes, staff are super professional and highly efficient. Great all round restaurant, who can easily cater for large parties, I’d totally recommend to anyone who enjoys Indian food, it’s delicious.

We ordered a takeaway which was £34 for 2 curries and 2 naan bread, the container was only half full so the portion size was small and the food was cold, not what we expected when paying top money, won't be returning, absolutely shocking!

Absolutely 5* service, gorgeous food and a lovely atmosphere. I have been here many times and I really enjoy it.

The staff and food were great. It was unfortunate that there were a lot of male groups upstairs with us. It was very noisy. This was rectified by taking our drinks downstairs and being looked after by Sam. It was a lovely evening

I had a few questions when i booked and Abdur came back to me on a couple of emails. When i arrived it was like we had known each other for years and this was my first time. This attention made it so special and my guests were flabbergasted when i said it was my first time. We started with a few drinks in the bar which was super busy and were then led to our table. Food was great but it was not cheap but the setting, the staff and the meal were excellent so we did not mind the cost at all Will be back soon Enjoy Marcus

There was an Excellent menu. The food was Delicious. The service was attentive. That’s my summary but I have to type 100 characters!

Takeaway. Onion bhajis were great but all downhill following that unfortunately. Chicken tikka masala had some flavour, that flavour is coconut, pure coconut. Biryani very bland. A lamb curry that was totally devoid of flavour. Didn’t realise that was possible in an Indian dish. Terrible terrible terrible. Really can’t understand the 4 star rating.

A really lovely restaurant, brilliant layout, coupled with friendly and helpful staff……. and the food was amazing, the best in such a long time. We will be back as it’s worth the travel from Chorleywood

I have become a regular at The Ruby. It's a really nice place and you are warmly welcomed. the atmosphere is great and the service is great and friendly. Best thing is the food though. it's one of the best if not the best indian restaurant I have been to. the food is really tasty and the flavours just great. I can highly recommend this if you are in the area or if not then make the effort and go.

This was a social book club meeting. Everything was delicious. Servings were very good, enough for two more meals when I got home.

Booked tabls for two on sat night.got there bit early didnt wait long for table.the server took us upstairs went so quick we lost him.our first time visiting the place. Had papadum for staters and asked how many we wanted. Mains tikka massala red so red .mixed grill chicken prawn.lamb chop and kebab. All same colour with onoins.bombay potatos no taste at all.and so oily and greasy.special fried rice again full of oil and greasy Keema naan.top swimming with grease. And we have heard such good things about the place .and was dissappointed Left lots of the food .the mix grill looked very unappetising . And it was.service was good at table and i gave 2 stars as plates were hot.

It was a pleasure to come back to this wonderful Indian restaurant again, you have to book well in advance now so I should not tell anyone that as I won’t be able to get there next time. The food is excellent for all tastes, if you don’t like it hot just speak to your waiter ask for advice, they are all very helpful, we had to much food, so two ladies asked for a doggie bag which was supplied. The food was excellent and will be going again. Good value for money. Also they do take away, but nothing as good as eating in the restaurant.

Visited with my son and we were both very impressed. They have gone somewhat upmarket and I must say have done it very well. Good efficient service,great food and a lovely ambiance. Slightly more expensive than your usual Indian fare but in my opinion worth it Portions and quality was excellent and the staff all friendly and professional. Ordered takeaway online, and chose the "collect" option, assuming it would be quicker, and was given a time to come and collect the order. Well, I am currently sitting in the restaurant 40 minutes after the collection time I was given and still no sign of the food. No matter how good it ends up being this just isn't acceptable, especially as we had made family plans on the assumption we'd be eating when we were told we would be which have now been spoiled. Perhaps because I paid in advance on the app they think they don't need to worry so much. But they have lost a customer.

Fantastic meal- Absolutely delicious Lamb Xacuti and Beef curry special. Lamb saag and Chicken pathia also both very good.- Staff very friendly and made great dish recommendations. Only minor letdown was the service which was quite slow!! Can’t wait to go back for more amazing curries :)

Following an event at the restaurant, we were greeted by the owner (even helped with our photo booth equipment. Lovely gesture by the owner, gave us table even on a very busy night. Amazing hospitality thoughout, wonderful food and great service. Loved the decor, staff were great and the food arrived very swiftly! Butter chicken & Veg Jalfrezi were great! Used their booking system on Monday 24th August for Wednesday 26th August, had an an email from Naz to confirm booking request, to say you'll receive a confirmation email shortly, after not receiving this re-emailed the ruby to confirm booking, email back from Abdul at Ruby to ask when was my booking, sent screenshot of original email from Naz, still no answer, phoned Ruby, only to be told oh , sorry fully booked now, bad management of staff and poor training,so sad as this is supposed to be an upmarket restaurant, may run by amateurs!

Sadly disappointed. We arranged a lovely family evening today, with a treat of a takeaway curry from Ruby, which we collected after a phone call an hour earlier. Plenty of time. I phoned and put in the order as we are all vegetarian and had some special requests. The first dish we asked for was a paneer shashlik, which was cooked correctly. The second was a vegetable masala, hot, with cashews, among more common menu items. When we collected the order they ran through it in the restaurant with the items we ordered. When we arrived home, the masala was bland, hardly any sauce and mostly peas and onions. Pretty grim if i’m honest. Ive eaten here a number of times and it was previously substantially better than this evening. I have visited most curry places around hertford and welwyn and the neem tree is significantly better catering for vegetarians if tonight is anything to go by. It was my meal that was wrong and it was so disappointing after spending over £50 on a meal for the four of us! I would appreciate a reply as this was definitely not the usual experience from the Ruby. As i said, this isnt usual but having bothered to spend that amount of money, phone in with lots of time and drive specifically to collect it instead of going to welwyn which is nearer, it’s a shame.

My partner and i came to this restaurant on an off chance they would have a table.We arrived at the restaurant and was greeted by Sam (i think) . We found out that during the pandemic this is precooked but we where able to grab a seat.My partner loving spicy food and myself loving flavoursome food (non spicy) found this restaurant to cater to both.The service was wonderful, and the food was even better.There where a couple of groups in the dining room celebrating an occasion. Ruby's seems like a much loved establishment with passionate members of the team.Parking is easy as there is a car park just down the road.I can already tell you that we have been back again but for a take away this time. Portions are a perfect size to me. Thank you for having us in your establishment and providing us with wonderful care.

Had a lovely delivery from Ruby in heartford, the king prawn vindaloo was just right amount of heat, kids enjoyed the korma, the nan bread was fulffy .got my NSH discount.the delivery man must have been BOSS, he was driving a new RANGE ROVER.. didn't need to tip him

Ordered two mains - Lamb bhuna was delicious, chicken dansak was too salty it affected the taste of the whole meal... sides and naan bread were great.

I went to Rubys with a large group of friends. The restaurant is beautifully set within a listed building, oozing with charm, sophistication, ambiance and exuberance. The amtmosphere within had a gentle buzz without intrusion or interference allowing diners to enjoy the company of each other and dining experience. We booked the private dining room which was laid out beautifully like a royal banquet. I took the chance and sat at the head table, fit for royalty! The food and service matched our expectations of such fine establishment. Well done to the staff and management. Keep it up...We're planning our next visit soon!

With a young grandson we could only opt for an evening take-away meal, and fancying Indian - who doesn't - we thought we'd try Ruby Contemporary Indian Cuisine in Hertford town centre. This was a really good choice because the dishes were both delicious and satisfyingly large of portion.The only downside, and of course its not a negative at all, is the sheer size of the menu; it really is comprehensive, so do allow time for a good perusal. That said, based on our menu choices for four people, we suspect everything will be great.

Food ok. Better than most indian restaurants in hertford. Staff friendly. Most disappointing.......friend asked for a doggie bag for all the leftovers. When they left the restaurant there was only one dish packed. Why??That was very cheeky!!!

Last time we dined at the Ruby must have been five years ago. At that time we were none too impressed for various reasons. We have a favourite Indian in Hertford and have been going there since. However after five years it is only fair to try again and what a pleasant surprise.We had a first class meal this week and as someone else has said, traditional dishes with a fresh twist. The setting is super and it makes a pleasant change to dine in more traditional surroundings with white linen and plenty of space. Overall a thoroughly good meal with excellent service. Move to the top of our list please.

Despite the good reviews on this restaurant, it is not good . The food is average but the service is atrocious.The staff are so slow they are nearly asleep!!We visited this Sunday at 6.00 there were only 4 customers including us and it took 15 minutes to get a drink served to the table.When our food came the rice was tepid and had to be sent back.We will not be giving them our custom again !!

Why have we not found Ruby before?! What a wonderful Friday evening! The restaurant is located less than five minutes walk away from the usual town centre outlets- and it sets itself apart in geography and quality. The restaurant carefully balances contemporary dining expectations in a grade II listed building. The restaurant is open plan with good space between tables. The menu is comprehensive with many familiar dishes- but be prepared for those familiar dishes to deliver a more elevated enticing taste; everything is cooked fresh and it really shines through. We will definitely be back.

On my previous visit, the food wasn’t that good. This time it was a bit better but I only got a veggie side dish, last time it was veggie vindaloo. The naan was huge luckily it was shared but still couldn’t finish it. We got poppadoms but had to wait about 15-20 mins to order our food. It was busy but to wait that long was annoying. It was loud with a few tables with big parties going on. It’s a nice restaurant and staff are friendly. Maybe they should bring in more staff when they anticipate it’ll be busy.

Best curry in town, although the restaurant was almost empty we took a risk and went in. The room was warm - surprising for such a large building as I was expecting it to be cold. The food we ordered was first class, ample amounts, nicely presented, flavorsome and hot. The only slight criticism was that the member of staff who served us was a bit miserable, a smile and goodbye when we were leaving wouldn't hurt - but the everyone has an off day and the food made up for the grumpy guy.

We went as a party of 6 on a Sunday evening. A nice seated bar area while we waited for us all to arrive where some customers were picking up their takeaways. We were then seated at a large round corner table. White table cloths (who thought that was a good idea in a curry house?). Anyway nice and clean. Lots of families enjoying dinner.

I went for a meal at The Ruby in a large group to celebrate a birthday. The menu choice is quite extensive and the food was excellent. However, the service was very slow and disjointed. This could have been because they were very busy, but maybe they should not take on too many covers if they cannot provide the service.

Attended a birthday party of 20 people last weekend, we had a separate room from the restaurant which was lovely, the staff however and the service where shocking, the food wasn’t to good either, and £600 for 20 people was a little pricey for the rude service and very average food we received, would I recommend ....NO

Went for a birthday celebration which got off to a bad start as our table was delayed by half an hour. It was very busy which is fine but as a result we were not asked for coffee, menu for desserts, asked if we wanted more drinks, if everything was ok..... ie the staff were too busy to be attentive. Had they come over to ask - I could have shown them the sugar cube which I found in my rice - 2cm x 1cm. This was not surprising as the coconut rice was so sweet it could have been a dessert dish. Although the decor was nice and it was reasonably priced, the food and lack of service put me off. Perhaps if they hadn't been so busy it would have been better...

The best curry I had in the area, I have been coming back to Ruby's many times over the last few years and have never had a bad experience. Staff are lovely and attentive, food is amazing.

Located in a tastefully kept heritage building in Hertford, Ruby offers succulent dishes which will take you to tasting heaven. All dishes are recommended, take into account the levels of spiciness. I chose the lamb tikka. Our family come to Hertford once a year from Spain and we've never missed it. Service is also ideal.

Took a large team here (17) for a weekday meal. Excellent food (all very hot on arrival) and everyone enjoyed it. Service was good. They were patient and attentive and dealt with a large party well. Well done guys.

Were were a group of five and have been here many times before. This restaurant is our first choice for eating in Hertford as it never disappoints.

I’ve been here a few times and the food was always good. My last visit, it wasn’t that great. The service was excellent, staff are very friendly but the food wasn’t on the same level as before. There a few Indian restaurants in town but always enjoyed coming here. I don’t think I’d come here again as it is pricey for mediocre food.

This was the first time we had been to this establishment and it will be the last. Service was poor, bad attuitude from some members. However our waiter was very pleasent. My husband ordered a starter and they bought out two plates and doubled the portion even tho i hadn't wanted a starter. My husband ordered a slizzling dish when it was bought to our table there wasn't a sizzle in sight and meat wasn't even hot and the texture was slimy. We couldn't wait to leave. I don't like to complain i just won't return.

We booked a table here to take our visitors from overseas as a special treat as they love curry. We’d not been here for a long time and although the last meal we had here wasn’t great, the reviews on TA won us over. We were taken to our table swiftly but it all went down hill from there. We didn’t order starters and the main courses took over an hour to arrive. Not one of us were happy with our meal for various reasons and whatever dish was ordered they all tasted the same! Prawns were skimped on. Some dishes never arrived and so eventually we stood them down (I don’t think they were even on their way). The service was haphazard and defensive. The manager did come and have a chat to explain that the poor experience we had was owing to ‘being busy’ - not a reasonable rationale for a weekend night. This episode taught us to trust our first instincts and I’m afraid we won’t be returning and I can’t recommend The Ruby.

Brilliant food and brilliant service. The staff are very attentive and very polite. We love going there for a curry whilst we are child free. The toilets are a mission to get to though.

Our food arrived in reasonable time from ordering, starters were fine, except that to me a dosa is a crispy rice pancake not a rolled up chapati - but it tasted ok. We all enjoyed our main course, portion sizes were generous and everything was piping hot when it came even though it was in normal dishes (not warmers).

I think they overbook and deal with the fallout once you’re in and sat in the bar area with a drink, Even though we booked, it was 30 mins at least before we got to our table. It’s all lovely in the dining area, but I found the food pretty bland. For an indian there wasn’t much spice let alone heat in the dishes we had, which was quite disappointing particularly as it’s always so busy at wkends. The chef needs to spice things up a bit, the curries I cook at home have more flavour than my shashlick.

We went to the Ruby for a reunion of old friends, who all grew up in the area. They were very friendly and attentive at first. The waiter was clearly 'under pressure' to sell the set menu to us as we were a 'big' group of 9 but it was quite expensive and we had a couple in our party who wanted specific dishes, so we declined, opting for menu order. At this point, the waiter got quite agitated and blanked us for the next half hour before eventually taking our order. The food arrived and several of us noted how sweet it was, tasting like a bowl of sugar had been dropped. I couldn't finish mine. At least the staff attitude improved by the end of the night, and the ambience was better, but sadly I wouldn't go back in a hurry.

Popped out to find something to eat and found myself at Ruby on a monday night.

The service was very poor when we visited. We had to wait 50 minutes for our starter and yet there was no reason for it to take this long as we were the only customers. Clearly they chefs spent too much time talking in the kitchen as that was all we could hear. After we finished our mains we asked to take our leftover food away. We didn’t realise until we’d left that they’d packed all of the food in the same container - we had quite a lot left so this made no sense especially since I am vegetarian and they mixed the meat with the vegetable dishes. When I called to complain they mumbled on the phone that I could pick up another dish, however I live 20 minutes away so it’s not worth my time. I would personally not visit again.

We have been dining at The Ruby since it opened and we have never been disappointed. This restaurant is an obvious choice for a birthday celebration: the staff are friendly and quick; the atmosphere is lively - everyone in the restaurant sand Happy Birthday to my husband and the food is fabulous. Have heard good things about this restaurant over the years and we're finally taken here by friends . We were not disappointed . We had a huge mixture of dishes and everything was excellent . The staff were very friendly and efficient but didn't make us feel rushed either .

On this occasion I had arranged a group of eighteen diners and Naz placed us in the private dining room.

Recently ordered a takeout from our tried and trusted curry house. When we got home and served up, there were 3 different cuts of chicken within one dish - slices, cubes with skewer marks and cubes without. It was rather late in the evening when I ordered but there is absolutely no excuse for this. Needless to say, we won’t be rushing back...ever!

Took pot luck using trip advisor and other reviews as dont know Hertford too well and struck luckybwith this place. The decor is lovely..really fresh and contemporary. We were greeted pleasantly and were quickly shown to our table. The poppadums were really good..not at all greasy..crispy and flaky. The pickles were also yummy..especially liked the tomato pickle which i think may have been homemade.

As usual had an awesome meal all our party thoroughly enjoyed the evening.The staff guided by Naz where lovely and we will be back soon.Loved it.5 stars in our book.

We have visited The Ruby many times and on each occasion have had an excellent experience. We love the buzzy atmosphere and the warm customer service from Naz and his team. We love the food and staff so much that we hired The Ruby for a large family and friends party - this was a couple of years ago - and our friends still talk about it today. So if you want a good meal and excellent customer service - go to The Ruby.

This is my regular Indian restaurant and our favourite, Naz and the rest of the staff are always polite and courteous. My favourite dish is the king prawn zinga the chicken tikka masala, lamb madras are also excellent. We also have regular deliveries too and the driver Steve is also as friendly. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the food and service

This was a leaving meal for a colleague and was original booked for 13 but ended up being 9. They had originally put us upstairs in a private room but it was way too big for us. So we had to wait for a table to be set up which was fine we didn’t mind.

It's a shame that the previous two reviews were poor. Our experience was pretty much the opposite. Housed in a beautiful 300 year old building in Hertford, the initial welcome was warm and professional. Having a drink in the small bar before dining added to the experience. The attractive interior is period in style and very well kept and service was prompt and very professional. My wife wasn't too keen on her wine although it was different to the type she would normally drink. My chicken Korma was enjoyable although the sauce was a little too creamy compared to how it is served in most restaurants. Overall a very pleasant meal.

The food is actually very poor. When I questioned it the prawns were fresh I was assured they were - they were actually frozen miniature prawns in my curry.

Visited Ruby on a sunday evening and was very quiet (expected).There were several waiters working but all come across uninterested and didnt ask once whether we would like another drink. When the food came it was luke warm and the Lamb curry was full of oil and the chicken rogan josh was bland. Again was not asked whether everything was Ok and when our plates were taken and much food left on the plate, the waiter didn't seem to care. Would never go back, plenty of better restaurants in Hertford!!

We spent my wife's 50th here was so impressed with the food I had vindaloo for my main was hot even for me.We had exceptional service and great hospitality.
