Royal Raj Winterbourne in South Gloucestershire

They used a family table with children to leave the tray with the food of a completely different large table behind them to serve. Also they believed that your used cutlery can be left on top of the table without any plate underneath for you to reuse with next dish. I was embarrassed to bring my visitors. Very different experience last time when I book as company. Waiter was nice.

Great atmosphere, even better food. the only curry house in Winterbourne you should be thinking about, best experience around for Indian dining. The Wednesday banquet is perfect for the family. 10/10

Our go to curry restaurant, we love the Royal Raj for all occasions and will keep going back! Lovely people, great food and drinks.

I would highly recommend the lamb chops and the lamb garlic masala. Definitely go for the lamb, it is very yummy. The front of house staff, Jamil, is also very welcoming and helpful. The restaurant is very clean, service very quick, and the atmosphere very vibrant! My favourite curry restaurant!

I've always had a great experience at the Royal Raj, food is excellent (I recommend the lamb, slow cooked and fall-apart tender; reshmi kebab starter is lush too), there are some fabulous dishes that I've not found anywhere else (e.g., the dhum gosht, a real crowd pleaser). Service is efficient, attentive and friendly, and there's a great range of drinks and cocktails that you don't usually find in a British Indian / Bangladeshi restaurant. I've been a customer for years, despite living a 20 minute drive away, and have brought three different teams from my "day job" to try it and have a nice evening out. Takeaways have never disappointed me either, and, added bonus, Deliveroo now delivers from the Royal Raj to our house.

I never normally write reviews but the royal raj winterbourne is a must visit! Food was unreal and staff were excellent, the new refurbishments brought a wonderful ambience ! The owner Jamil was friendly and polite ensuring there was no issues with our meal. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and will be back.

New to the area - beats our old favourite urban tandoor place in Bristol. Generous portion sizes , reasonably priced! Stunning nan breads!!!!

Takeaway - Chicken Vindaloo came with 3 pieces of beef, 2 pieces of chicken and 1 piece of potato. literally just a melting pot of leftovers. Would never ever eat from this place again!

We have been to the Royal Raj a few times now. And also had takeaways. Food is always hot and deliciously full of flavour. Always try and go on quieter times. Walk in no trouble for tables.

Had a Deliveroo delivery from here. Made us sick ! Will never order from here again. The chicken and lamb was hard. I

Ordered a takeaway Dupiaza was pretty tasteless had no spice at all, supposed to be medium, very little chicken, lots of onion! Prawn Korma too sweet by far. Poppadoms nice, bhaji ok, keema naan very nice, rice good, pickles good a lot of money when you don't eat it.

Went and placed an order for Father’s Day, food was amazing and was suggested by a friend and was fast and quick even though they were busy! The staff were nice and pleasant can’t wait to go in a try! Don’t know how this place has anything reviews below 4 stars 😭

Had a really lovely meal here last night! The food was delicious and fresh, service was prompt and the staff were friendly. We all really enjoyed ourselves and look forward to coming back again soon!

Very oily curry. Disappointing.

It was a Thursday night so although not overly busy, there was enough people in there to feel comfortable and nice. Very attentive service and great food. Plenty of parking available. It looks like they do a great deal on Wednesdays so I would make sure you book as I can see it being very busy on those nights and weekends. Price wise it was about right for the meal.

Everything was amazing. Don’t believe any of the reviews. Regular most weeks and never had an issue with staff or food!

DO NOT ORDER!! Ordered a tikka masala from them and it turned up through Uber. For a start the curry was cold and I received a meal what was not what I ordered- it was disgusting. The ‘chicken’ prices was massive where a lazy chief could not be bothered to cut them up and the sauce was red not brown and didn’t taste anything like a tikka- - the sauce was too much and not enough meat ( as said was massive) This meal was disgusting to taste and look upon as said it wasn’t a tikka. Do yourself a favour and order somewhere else. I heard through the grape vine in the village they have got a bad reputation but didn’t feel it could have been as bad as it was. Avoid at all costs

Lovely food and a well presented restaurant

We visited here last night for my dad's birthday we were a party of 7, 5 adults and two children. I want to start by saying the food was absolutely amazing we have zero complaints about the food as it really was delicious. The service however was to be desired, some of the staff were very abrupt and bordering rude. The guy came to the table to take our order litrally 10 min after us arriving we had barely had time to look at the menu, he was quite abrupt and rude about the fact that we weren't ready to order and proceeded to stand at the end of the table waiting for us. When the food came out the dished were almost thrown at us and the names of the dishes shouted at us. When it came time to ask for the bill which was a considerable amount we were told quiet abruptly that it didn't include a service charge. We did tip and to be honest it was more of a tip than they deserved as the service was awful. When the guy came to get tip he opened it up at the table, tutted and walked away. It's such a shame because the food was really lovely but the service was to be desired. I'm not sure we will be back which is a shame.

Sadly , there was one waiter with poor attitude ! Unfortunately , this is what we will remember from our visit !

Went here for the first time this evening with a group of friends (approx 30). The staff (waiters, bar staff etc.) were very friendly, helpful and polite. Despite the large group they managed the courses well ensuring everyone had what they ordered. The food was great and most enjoyable. Good value for money too with ample portions. Recommended!

Food is fine, no complaints there, about average. The service however is so bad it's actually comical. Almost throwing plates of food at you, getting stroppy while waiting for you to clear some space for the dishes, snapping at you and shouting the name of the dish a million times, faces like smacked backsides. Chill out guys! I don't think customer service is your forte, maybe find a job that doesn't deal with people haha!

First time here for a long time and although it seems to have changed hands the food was still very good. Service from some staff members was a bit abrupt & terse and has room for improvement but the courses did arrived promptly. The drinks menu is ok although non alcoholic section is a bit limited but otherwise typical. Atmosphere was ok not too noisy so no issues on that front.

Ordered a chicken dansak and I could not eat it !! It was far too spicy,I normally eat this Indian dish ,but this was soo hot it was inedible!!

Wednesday banquet great. Value for money and good service.

Probably one of the nicest tasting curry’s I’ve ever had. Flavour was amazing but some of the chicken was a bit undercooked which put me off the chicken a little. But other pieces were cooked beautifully. Would make the chicken pieces a bit smaller. Really lovely experience and attentive staff.

Very friendly staff, quick service. Food was really good big portions and overall a good place to eat.

Outstanding restaurant. Simply superb, as well as being friendly and attractive. We were not in the area for fun - visiting patient at the Frenchay rehabilitation unit. So our expectations of the Raj were not high. What a surprise. Everything was fresh, delicious and plentiful. Almost too plentiful. I especially recommend one of the speciality dishes, Dhum Gosht, a sort of casserole of incredibly high quality lamb cooked under a chapati lid. One of the best things I’ve ever had in an Indian restaurant in the UK. Ignore the negative reviews that appear here. We either came on a freak night, or they were from people who have no idea about food. Incidentally, Daisy’s Coffee Shop over the road is also excellent.

Gone downhill recently and not sure why. We've been going here for years but not sure why it's so bad now. We had our food delivered and the Chicken Madras had 3 pieces of meat in and was very oily (as pictured) - the restaurant would not replace the curry either.

This is the Karen dining experience of an Indian . Food is great but the staff are so rude.

Food was tasty (for the most part, one of the meals came out cold) but the staff were rude and abrupt. It felt like they didn't want us to be there. The food took over an hour to arrive even though it wasn't busy in the slightest (only 4 tables including my party). Won't be back any time soon.

Food was great, when we’re spending our well earnt cash, and can’t afford to go out often, we don’t expect to be treated as third rate citizens. One guy who’s customer service was so rude like beyond rude that it’s actually insulting.

Visited here for a birthday meal, group of 8 of us, not impressed at all with the food, didn't feel very welcoming when we arrived a group of 6 staff all staring at us, really nice restaurant but the food was tasteless and we were all ill 🤒 the next morning, Will stick to the Taj Brassiere up the road always a good curry and very friendly staff......

Couldn't eat it all! Had to miss the desserts ,too full of lovely spicy curry ,etc , would recommend,,but would be advisable to book in advance, so popular, only just managed to find a parking space in the large Car park...

Such a shame - food was good (not amazing but certainly above average) But the waiter we had was dreadful - food was literally thrown down on the table/ drinks were banged down in front of us/ he shouted rudely the names of the food he was putting in front of us and scowled the whole evening. It was so bad that the next table to us who he was also serving started a conversation with us about it. We did complain to the manager who was really nice and polite - however no offer of a reduced bill/free coffee/acknowledgement of the waiter’s behaviour. If I want a Basil Fawlty experience I will go somewhere else next time. Certainly no intention of returning

Absolutely beautiful food, the best tasting vindaloo I've found.

The food at the royal raj was good, the service from one of the waiters was very rude. He needs to appreciate his customers, we always leave a tip but not yesterday. I was there with my friends and we all said the same, he took a glass of beer that was not finished and put a bottle of wine on the table, he did not ask if one of us would like to try the wine, just banged the bottle down on the table and walked away. We all felt he wanted to rush us throughout the evening, even to the extent of putting the bill on the table, when we may have wanted something else. We will not be returning.

Excellent. I believe it has the reputation for being the best in Bristol and after eating there, I wholeheartedly agree.

Average food, waiter in a rush and walked away on several occasions before I had even finished saying what we were ordering. Meat was tough. Apart from the man who portrays himself as the manager, everyone else seems very nice

Please ignore any negative reviews on here, genuinely laughable. People simply LOVE to moan. Quality experience tonight - excellent service despite a very busy restaurant and the food was top drawer. And this was my first time, I’m definitely not “a local”.

The food was excellent and great service from the friendly team.

We asked to take the leftovers home and were charged for the tubs. They added this charge without telling us first and we didn't see it until after paying.

Food was Fantastic, Service was Very brisk. Teachers was A Tad Flat, But Other than that, Banging Food.

Service was more pleasant than the competing establishment. Not pressured to keep buying drinks. Papadum pickles were a little different to most standard offerings which was nice. Perfect naan breads and rice. Chicken tikka main was nicely cooked and spiced. Lamb badonia got my friends approval and the portion size was excellent although one extra piece of lamb would have been ideal.

Food was nice tonight but the service was terrible they couldn’t wait to get us out .

Arrived on my own, table for one please, he looked at me very strange, not unusual to eat out on my own, hang on a minute he said, well only 2 tables were occupied so why hang on, very rude and arrogant staff from start to finish, I was over polite to all of them and got nothing back in return. All looked like they had a huge chip on there shoulders, if it's not the job for you then get out of the trade. Can't fault the the food and the only decent member of staff was the manager at the end to whom I voiced the attitude of the very poor staff. Been to so many Indian restaurants with bad attitude waiter's do they not realise that people won't come back if there not welcomed regardless how good the food is. I expect they will be pleased to know that I won't be returning because it was obvious they didn't want my company.

Lovely meal last night on Wednesday banquet. So much food and really tasty. Highly recommend. We will be back Thank you.

Seems like staff do not want to treat Asians customers. We can simply observe how much different treatment given to us as compare to other local folks. Some points worth noting if u r planning to visit: 1) It's not an Indian restaurant. It could be from other neighbouring countries. 2) Staff was quite rude like we were thr to eat free food. 3) Once bill received, the staff member throw the chocolates on table like we were begging them to give though we dint ask any. We were okay if u don't want serve. What a wonderful way to treat.. huh!! Initially, I thought why there is no Asian customers though the room was quite occupied and I got the answer before I left. So just one suggestion to staff - Respect customers and do not treat them based on the skin color. I want to give ZERO ⭐ to u guys but no other option except giving one.

Nothing to fault, worth a visit

Enjoyed a very nice meal, the quality was good, everyone thought the food was delicious. The staff were helpful and gave good service. There were even those packet hot flannels, orange slices and classic mint chocolates at the end! Well worth the a trip (not an expensive meal being about £15-£25 per person for main-rice-naan-drink depending on what you order). Inside can seem a bit tight but is comfortable and the only thing really is that the parking is limited around the venue - you can park at front or round the back in car park but spaces are limited. Would certainly go there again.

Very good service, food and drink. Under the circumstances of a booking for up to 30 places and because of cautious members (Covid) over the Christmas period dropped out of the party and ended up with 9, the restaurant were exceptionally accommodating and still entertained us flawlessly. We will make another visit for sure as it was so enjoyable.

Visited on Wednesday 6/10 for the first time with my colleague...came highly recommended. We are both from the Birmingham area so I thought it will be good.. I had Prawn Puri and Lamb Channa with vegetable rice. The consistency and sauce was the same for each dish..tasteless - Apart from the burnt garlic taste in the channa! Vegetables in rice were very small and again tasteless. We weren't once asked how our meals were. However, it was clear they 'favoured' the 'regulars'.. The following morning I had a 'jippy tummy' which has never happened to me before. I think the speed the food came there was no way it was 'cooked from fresh'. My honest opinion; Yes, it's in a lovely part of south Gloucestershire, 'a long way from anywhere' for a decent night out. Know I shouldn't generalise but it's likely some of the locals may be limited in their expectations of what I consider to be excellent food. However I am spoilt as my partner is an excellent cook with 650+ cook books and can genuinely cook anything he puts his hand to! I usually leave a tip, but not this time. Would I 'go again' or recommend? A resounding NO!

Poppadoms were good with fantastic accompaniments. After that not so good. Waited ages for main meal. When it came sizzle platter was cold! V disappointing. Don't go on Friday if you're not a regular. You will be ignored!!
