Walked in the pub where the owner/landlady was smoking outside. Not a great first impression. Went in to be told they were only doing roasts. At 1.15 they only had 2 chicken left. We ordered and sat out side with our drinks. The waitress called us in to a very empty restaurant area where are meals were on the table. Lots of roast potatoes and some meat. We asked when veg was coming out to be told the had run out of veg the night before!!!!! We couldn’t believe it! We told them we didn’t want it. The landlady/owner did offer us to take meals free of charge but that wasn’t the point. We have been before but the fantastic chef they had has left! We’ll never go back. Needs a complete revamp and new chef!

What a disappointment, all I can say is I feel sad. I did sooooooo much research looking where we could find the best Sunday lunch…. I stumbled across this place on trip adviser and after reading so many excellent reviews, I was so excited to try this pub in a beautiful location. Sadly it wasn’t even mediocre. I have to start with the food. We ordered 4 vegetarian roasts and a plant based burger. The burger was dry and hard. The roasts, honestly I don’t know what to say- apart from it was the worst meal I have eaten in nearly 50 years! The chef came out to say he would have to freshly prepare the vegetable crumble, which he normally makes in advance. This made it sound yummy & extra special. However when it arrived 10 mins later it was sliced boiled carrots and broccoli florets covered in a glupey raw flour topping. ( this had to be scrapped off!!) The accompanying fresh vegetables were……….. sliced boiled carrots and broccoli florets! My partner joked we definitely had our 2 of our 5 a day! The roast potatoes were ok, the Yorkshire puds - very “ standard” & chewy - so I would be surprised if they were made in house! We decided to skip dessert! The pub was beautiful from the outside in a lovely location, but sadly the run down interior did not match its exterior. Everything felt a little grubby and a fatty greasy smell in the pub greeted you! On a positive note - the staff were friendly & dogs were welcome. In retrospect we should not have eaten such a poor meal and we should have sent it back to the kitchen, however I didn’t want to offend! I wish I’d taken photographs as our meal looked nothing like the other reviews on here! I feel fuming we spent almost £100 on a meal of such poor standard, we will definitely not be returning.

When booking a table for a meal to celebrate our wedding anniversary, I just asked if we could have a nice table. When we arrived we were ushered to a beautiful room illuminated by candles with a beautifully laid table with red hearts scattered on it. We were introduced to our waitress Lesley who could not have been more attentive when serving our excellent meal. Cath and Andy the landlords should be nominated as hosts of the year. Thank you for making our evening special to your excellent team. We will be back.

Last week we stumbled upon the Royal Oak whilst staying in Farfield for the weekend. It was incredible! Kath and Andy were absolutely delightful and couldn’t have been more hospitable. With food allergies I even spoke to the chef to ensure the Goats Cheese salad would be okay.. it was delicious! We loved it so much we booked for the whole family to watch the rugby on Saturday and we had an even better time. If you are in the area then it is a must visit. Thank you for being so kind!!

We had a first class Sunday lunch here today - roast beef and Vegan Pie with fresh veg. Both were hot, delicious and portions were plentiful. Pudding to follow - home made apple crumble and chocolate fudge cake (both were light and lovely). Staff were welcoming and very friendly. We will certainly come back again and try something from the extensive menu. Unfortunately, we were overcharging - 2 course Sunday lunch should be £14.99 (a deduction of £2 each on the sweet). To be fair to the staff, when I phoned up, they realised their mistake and gave me a credit of £4 back onto my card.

We ate here this evening for the first time in a number of years. Staff were friendly from the outset but the food was distinctly underwhelming. We ordered the creamy garlic mushrooms to share to start.....the mushrooms were well cooked and hot but had so much garlic sliced among them and the bread was only toasted on one edge, the rest was soggy! I ordered ham and chips (no beans/peas or eggs) as a lighter meal but was given so many chips. Also the 2 slices of ham were obviously out of packet rather than cooked and carved and were thin and mediocre at best. My husband had the "gourmet chicken pie", with dauphonise potatoes and vegs, the pie was stone cold. On telling staff the plate was removed but the vegs were left on the table. The pie was clearly heated in a microwave and returned by which time I had virtually finished my meal and the vegs were cooler than they should have been, We opted not to order desert but asked for the bill. That bill didn't have any reduction in price but on asking my husband's meal was eventually reduced by half. The website prices are not what are shown on the menu......everything is £1 -£2 more expensive in reality. Finally the table was "sticky" and the flower vase held scummy water......neither were pleasant. Such a shame as the venue is in a lovely position. Sadly for us our evening was a real disappointment and we won't be returning.

We were recommended The Royal Oak by the receptionist at Tortworth Court Hotel, where we were staying with a big group of friends, as a nice pub within walking distance (25 mins) of the hotel. The food was good quality pub food, and just what we needed for a Saturday lunch. Members of our party had the fish and chips, sausage and mash, pie, lasagne, shepherd’s pie, BLT sandwich, cheese and chutney sandwich and tomato and roast pepper soup. All were nicely presented and everyone scored their food a solid 8/10. The landlady and her staff were very pleasant and really added to the atmosphere of the pub.

Sarah, Lesley and Matt (the Chef) hosted us superbly. We were a group of 11 staying at a local hotel wanting to walk to a pub for lunch. We started with drinks outside and were treated to fast and friendly service. We moved inside to eat and the food was simple, fresh and of a very good standard. Not a gastro pub but just how a very good pub should be (with none of the fussiness or pretension). Worth a visit.

Like a lot of couples during covid our wedding was postponed from April (we had been told we would be fine to rebook for September) but come August when we knew that we wouldn't be having the wedding or the reception that we planned we started looking at alternatives that we were not only happy with, but that fell within the government guidelines. And then we found The Royal Oak. From the minute we spoke to Kath and Andy and explained the situation they couldn't do enough to help. They ensured all safety protocall was adhered to, they listened to what sort of meal we wanted, allowed us to move the tables around to ensure our guests felt comfortable as well as making special dishes for those who had specific dietary requirements. The staff we friendly and helpful, the chef knows his stuff and not one of our 19 guests had anything bad to say about the food, in fact their reviews were glowing. We can't thank Kath, Andy and the staff enough for helping to make our day perfect.

Just as it should be in a great restaurant - not what we expected in a cozy country pub.The food was excellent, with good sized portions of fresh, and wonderfully well prepared and presented food. Although we chose the beef and vegetarian roasts - which were delicious - we were so intrigued by the varied and imaginative main menu, we’ve decided to come back to sample other treats. 5 old friends met up for our monthly pub night, which this month took place at the Royal Oak. The pub has been substantially renovated since I last visited some years ago. The place is light and welcoming and the staff are very friendly and polite. We all tried a pint of Trelawney which was excellent and sat down to order food of the evening menu. At least we tried to. The Royal Oak boasts a decent selection of pies but as we discovered they are not always available. We eventually manged to order something that was available but were disappointed that 5 of the 6 choices became unavailable after we had ordered. On the plus side, what arrived was tasty and there was plenty of it. My chicken pie was ok if not spectacular but for £13 I expected more. The 'creamy mash potato' was anything but with a thin crust where it had been clearly reheated or kept warm under lamp.

One of the other people ordered the cod and the portion of fish was tiny, really not good. We called the manager over who was not happy and not helpful or particularly interested in our view and then sent the waiter who had only been there for a couple of days over to say he would take one meal of the bill. It was a really enjoyable experience and would definitely recommend such a welcoming and customer focused business. The food and service was brilliant and in such a lovely setting, perfect. Thank you all at the Royal Oak.

We happened to stumble across this lovely pub on our way home. A last minute decision to stop and have some lunch.

Generous portions, quality ingredients and massive homemade Yorkshire puddings make this the best Sunday roast I’ve had in England so far after +5 years living here. The staff were lovely and so patient with my parents who were visiting from Spain and didn’t speak a word of English. We’ll definitely be coming back in the near future.

My wife and I had the extreme pleasure of visiting this charming country pub for an evening meal! The whole experience was wonderful, from the starters to desert! I had the Lamb Kofta as a main meal, and it was simply delicious ( although in all honesty, it was a tough choice, as the whole menu looked so tempting). Our waitress - Hannah, was a delight, so professional and helpful! To anyone visiting the area, I recommend very highly that you take the opportunity to go to this great country pub!

Nice food and service the pub could do with a little upgade, other than that the place is ok little bit out the way

Reading the recent review by Smithy, he obviously went to a different place than we did. The beer was good, the landlord friendly and the food good. The portions were very substantial and require a good appetite to do them justice - perhaps a little too substantial for some, but better that than not enough. We enjoyed it and would certainly go back when in the area.

We really enjoyed our visit to The Royal Oak. The food was great and the staff were very friendly. Loved the beer too! We were staying just down the road at Tortworth Court Hotel and rate the food at Royal Oak better than the hotel. Will look forward to returning at earliest opportunity.

We came here as a half way point for family getting together on what was a quiet Wednesday lunch time in this pub.

This pub has a gf menu online which is why we chose to eat there, along with its easy accessibility to the M5 (although it is in a quiet country location). After some initial confusion with a new waitress, a very lovely lady came over to sort out my order. She had a very good understanding of the requirements of coeliac sufferers' needs ,even stating that the chips were fried in a dedicated fryer without being asked. We all enjoyed the food (I was the only coeliac), which was well-cooked,plentiful and nicely presented. My husband really enjoyed his draught beer too!

Our party of seven thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Very quaint setting with separate rooms. There was a variety of meals too choose from (not just a Sunday roast) which pleased us. Was also impressed that we had table service not only for the meals but also the drinks. The seven meals were all presented together, were of great quality and volume. Can thoroughly recommend and will be visiting again.

Lovely pub set in beautiful surroundings. We partly chose this pub as it has a really good gluten free menu. I have a few other food intolerances and the staff were really friendly and helpful in guiding me through the menu. The food was great with generous portions. The pub is set in lovely countryside - would love to come back in the winter when the fires are lit!

First time visiting this local pub tonight and we will definitely be back! The food was amazing especially the chocolate brownie! Service was great, only two staff but both were very friendly and helpful and had big smiles. All round an extremely pleasant night.

Popped in on a Sunday afternoon for a quick drink to escape the hot sun. Was faced with demotivated bar staff, a chef who was sitting at the bar complaining about the heat. Didn’t feel overly welcomed. Wouldn’t go back sadly.

Came here for an evening meal, after reading good reviews on tripadvisor. We came into the bar and stood waiting, and waiting, and waiting... it wasn't until a member of the public called to someone out the back that we were eventually served.

My first visit was a few years ago, but was in the area and thought I’d try it again. Had crab fritters for starter but couldn’t really taste the crab. Chose pork Ribs for my main but was not impressed. Not very tender\succulent..The waitress was happy to take them away and I then chose fish and chips which was cooked perfectly..

Attended today for the breakfast with Santa. The food was lovely - we all enjoyed our breakfasts. All staff were fantastic from the start, and special thank you to Tracy. She was amazing with my step daughter who was a little shy to meet Santa. It was our first visit and we’ll definitely be back.
