A great surprise, we had booked whilst staying locally and didn’t really want to walk far for our lunch and a drink. The pub was full of ramblers when we arrived but as we’d booked we got our table and enjoyed a really lovely roast, desert and a great couple of pints of Timothy Taylor. The staff were fantastic and couldn’t do enough to help us enjoy our time there. If you’re passing please pop in you won’t be disaappointed.

In an age of insincere and instant digital connectivity, where the pace of life seems to quicken with each passing day, there exists a timeless institution that stands as a beacon of warmth and humanity amidst the hustle and bustle of cold modernity – I am of course referring to The Royal Oak in Burton Leonard. When passing visitors come to Burton Leonard for the first time it is unlikely that they will get the chance to visit each resident’s private home in order to gain a deeper appreciation for the place. Acting as the village’s communal dining room, living room, and – dare I say it – site of worship, The Royal Oak offers the occasional traveller just such a window into the community it serves, and a more welcoming atmosphere I can scarcely imagine. This venerable establishment, with weathered wooden beams and comfortably lived in furnishings, serves as a sanctuary of conviviality in an increasingly fragmented world. Here, shielded from harsh realities outside, amidst the comforting aroma of home cooked food and championship award winning ale, strangers become friends, and the stresses of the day melt away to the infectious soundtrack of laughter and lively conversation. I should forgive you for thinking this all sounds too good to be true, and yet this is precisely the experience my wife and I were treated to when we decided to ditch the car and stop by the Oak for a drink on our way home last Sunday. Within five minutes of receiving a warm welcome from Landlord Steve and his partner Lisa, we’d become engrossed in a lively and entertaining conversation with two regular patrons at the bar. Though we’d never met these two Oak regulars before, we quickly established several shared interests and even some mutual connections, much to our amazement. Herein lies the almost indescribable magic of a proper British pub. In an era dominated by impersonal chains and soulless establishments with passing one-time-customers, The Royal Oak offers a rare glimpse into a vanishing way of life – a world where hospitality is genuine, and human connection is valued above all else. Here – I am pleased to say – the art of conversation is alive and well, and the simple pleasure of sharing a pint with friends and strangers alike takes precedence over the distractions of the digital unreality of modern life. Steve is a past master in the art of hospitality, it was as much a delight to be served by him as it was to watch him interact with all the other guests. The truth is that we could easily have passed by and headed home for an early night spent watching some mindless program on TV – but for a chance last minute decision (my wife’s incidentally) we were treated to a most memorable afternoon, enjoying a quality of hand pulled beer that is genuinely hard to find these days, whilst revelling in the company of strangers. It is no exaggeration to say it went a long way to restoring my faith in humanity’s intrinsic capacity for warmth and friendliness. Could all this have anything to do with the championship award winning ales? Well the plain fact is you shall have to find that out for yourself. In fact I strongly recommend that you do just that, you will be better off for it.

I had heard that the Royal Oak served a good pint of Tetley Cask but tasting is believing and the pint pulled by Steve ( think he’s the Landlord) was one of the best I’ve ever had! The quality was so good I was forced to try the Hobgoblin Gold and the Timothy Taylor’s as well which were equally good! I was also tempted by the welcoming atmosphere to have something to eat and the food offering is high quality, traditional homemade pub food and great value for money. Portion size was such I had no room for dessert. I will certainly be returning here very soon!

After moving to the village during the winter of 2020 amid the covid hospitality closures, we were eager to visit the pub on re-opening and were not disappointed. This pub is an absolute hidden gem!!! 100% recommended for both food and drink if visiting the area. Lisa's pub classics are delicious, including Fish and Chips and giant filled Yorkshire puddings on Sundays. The hospitality from Steve, Lisa and all of the staff is second to none and there's always a warm atmosphere. Fantastic beer garden out the back in the Summer months which is huge and cosy indoors complete with a fire for the Winter, we love it (along with our dogs who always get treats on arrival). Overall a great village pub that we can't recommend enough.

We are only recent visitors to this pub but we already really enjoying coming to eat here. The welcome we receive each time is heart warming and this is matched by the quality of the food. We have eaten on a Friday and now tried the Sunday lunch. Both were spot on. My wife is a vegetarian and she was so pleased to see a vegetarian menu but also that when she asked to mix and match items from the menu, this was no problem. After our first visit we were really impressed that when we next went in they remembered us and that my wife was a vegetarian and even the choices she made on the previous visit. Excellent. The food is a nice mix of traditional home cooking with a selection of specials. I struggle to resist the steak and ale pie but also loved the Sunday roast. Both came with lovely fresh vegetables cooked just how I like them. We will be back.

As a party of four we sampled the new Royal Oak menu brought in for 2020. There was a good range of starters however the main courses were superb. The ladies went for the sea bass which got rave reviews and I had the Haggis neaps and tatties which I think was on the specials board. =The whisky sauce was fantastic. There was a nice buzz to the restaurant with a steady flow of locals in the bar and a busy but not packed restaurant.Great music in the background.A definite hidden gem off the beaten track but only a few minutes off the main Harrogate to Ripon Road and well worth a visit

We are from the midlands so not locals, but felt at home the moment we walked in. We were greeted with a big smile and a lovely hello from i think it was Steve the gaffa apologies if i got the name wrong . We opted for a 3 course meal and started with the black pudding stack. What a treat topped off with a perfectly cooked spot on. The chips were also spot on,i dont know what they were cooked in or how they were cooked but they were special. So i must give the chef a massive compliment, you sir are a star, sorry i didn't get your name, which i should have. So to sum up our visit, beautiful village gastro pub, that we were made to feel very welcome in,never felt rushed, and i thought price wise was very reasonable for the top quality ingredients and top quality chefing if thats a word five stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

What a wonderful pub this is, the small villages on the outskirts of Ripon can have a strange atmosphere. However, this pub has a wonderful feeling when you first arrive with absolutely lovely landlords. The people seem very friendly, the decor is so ‘yorkshire’ and the food is phenomenal. What an incredible little pub & hats off to the landlords for making this one you would like to return to. The young girl who was serving in the restaurant tonight (maybe 13,14?) was such a delight too, so polite, very good at her job and it’s lovely to see a young girl working so hard on a Friday night. From the first warm welcome from Steve and the way they allowed us to sit at the bar to accommodate Dad's leg injury, we knew we had found a good place to stop for lunch. The two course menu had a really good choice and was excellent value. Lovely home made soup for us both, followed by meaty butchers sausages & mash and a warm chicken caesar salad were all delicious. Truly delicious. Three courses, wine and couple of beers for just over £50. Well worth a visit!

This was our third visit to this pub, set in a beautiful village; we visited after walks in the beautiful surrounding countryside. The level of service from the friendly hostess and her staff is outstanding. We went for a Sunday lunch and the set menu offered a fixed price for one, two or three courses - we went for the three courses for a great price of £16.95. This was truly excellent value for the quality of food that we were served. I would recommend it to anyone - lovely beer too! The atmosphere of the pub is very agreeable too. We'll definitely be returning!

So I've eaten here a few times now and have to say I have never left disappointed. The ingredients are locally sourced, the chef is a passionate cook and the pub owner and that's probably the best recipe for a really honest delicious food and a friendly service. It is loved by the locals so there is always a nice and warm atmosphere. My personal favourite - lamb rump with red current and red wine sauce or lamb shanks. My friend is always singing praises to a roast belly of pork or chicken curry which is apparently a secret chef's recipe. I am definitely going back as long as I live in the area.

Had lunch with a friend Oct 2015. The fish and chips he ate were "the best I have eaten"n. I think the chips were double fried, a tested sample showed they were the best I've ever eaten. I had the Thai stir fry and it was delicious, cooked spot on with fresh ingredients. Service was spot on and attentive. Beer was excellently kept. Definitely a place to visit.

We were served with full English breakfast and all the trimmings plus toast, tea, coffee, and even enjoyed a glass of prosecco. The service and food was excellent and can strongly recommend. Julie and the team were very friendly even letting us have the use of a phone charger. Hopefully we will be back same time next year

We decided to eat here after a recommendation from a friend.. I wasn't disappointed ..the menu was varied and very reasonably priced.I had the mushroom started which was divine,my husband had the soup which he said was delicious. For mains I had steak with all the trimmings which was done to perfection.Hubby had steak pie with veg and potatoes...I was gutted I couldn't manage a dessert..the food was well presented and very tasty..the staff were helpful ..I would certainly return .. It's an old pub I fact when I lived at Copgrove in the 60s I remember sitting outside this pub having lemonade and a bag of crisps with the salt packet...so it was nice to go down memory lane.

Spending the weekend away, and out on a country walk, came across this little village pub, what a find, service was excellent staff more than helpful and friendly towards strangers. Food was excellent especially the belly pork portions more than ample, we had a starter to share, two mains, and a pud to share, four large wines, two lagers, one cider, all for the cost of £59 truly fab. Even sorted our taxi for us !

Went for a family meal recently; only 2 other people came in to eat whilst we were there. Smelt of chip fat when you walked in - very off putting. Menu uninspiring and food was awful. A member of my family looked into the kitchen whilst outside and said they did not want to eat there again when they had seen it. My scampi arrived - brown on the outside & still frozen inside - sent it back after leaving a semi-eaten piece on the place. It arrived back (having been chucked back into the fryer) on the same plate! Yuk.

Our meal on Saturday 14th March was the latest of many visits to this great little pub, but I have never reviewed before, so here goes. You need to book early because the Royal Oak is always popular and busy.Sat down at the table with a pint of Daleside Ale and on this occasion I tried the Haddock and Chips with mushy peas, and just like all the other meals I have sampled here it was excellent. I was going to have a Dessert but I was full from the main meal alone (also helped my wife to finish the vegetables), however having tried some of the pud's on previous occasions, they are some of the best I have tasted. The staff are always friendly, polite and efficient and even though my Father inlaw was paying the prices are very reasonable.

Went on the basis of an overheard conversation. Can only agree with others. Pate was obviously homemade; my beef was not overcooked - but not rare enough for me, a personal thing. My wife's roast potatoes passed muster, so they must be good-very rare she says that. Being a confessed foodie I cannot fault it. So Hare and Hounds is on our list of ' to do again.' Not many places get on the list - picky, yes, we are. You will not be disappointed.

I could go on all day how brilliant this place is. From the great atmosphere, to the excellent tasting food. There was simply not one thing that we didn't like. It's nice to see a family run establishment that is actually run properly and by people who care about what they do. My partner and I went for a dinner for a small celebration and weren't disappointed. The starters we had were the pate and the pork fritters, for mains, we had the turbot and the pork and black pudding pie. All homemade and nice and hot. The veg was cooked perfectly so we are definitely coming again. Thank you guys and girls for a great evening. Damien and Amy :)

Lovely traditional pub, serving excellent food. So many choices it was hard to decide what to have! Dined here with 5 friends and all of us enjoyed what we had. The fish pie went down a treat! Had the 2 course option which was excellent value for money. We so wished we had room for dessert as they all sounded absolutely yummy - maybe next time! This was my first visit - came on a recommendation and there will now be many more visits. A very warm welcome from the staff and fantastic service. Would certainly recommend.

We found this place on the last night of our holiday, just as well otherwise we would have most definitely come back a stone heavier!!! Just expected to get typical 'pub grub' how wrong were we..... we experienced one of the best meals we have had in a long time and so reasonable £12.50 for two courses - well worth it. Cannot recommend this place highly enough will definitely be back when we are back in the area.

Gutted. Have heard so much about this place and the infamous KF Ceaser. To be fair. Had sausage roll also which was good. The chicken for the Ceaser was ‘wet’ and very soft/mushy, in texture and quite bland. The bread just didn’t seem too fresh. Was just cold baguette / sub. I was looking forward so much. One bite and sadly threw away.

I had the pleasure of eating here for my sister's birthday, and it was one of the best evenings of food that I have ever had. We both had been looking forward this immensely and were not disappointed. From the typically enthusiastic Yorkshire greeting from the sommelier to the actual food itself, the whole evening was one we won't forget. Despite the outstanding food and technical brilliance on show, there was also no hint of pretension which made for a relaxed and engaging evening. Well worth the trip to anyone who thinks they like food!

Wish i could leave 50 stars! Beautiful quiet and peaceful campsite with beautiful views of the countryside and surrounded by cows and sheep. Tanya is lovely to deal with and Mark who manages the site is an absolute legend. He's friendly, knows loads about the area and goes out of his way to make sure everyone has a great time There are only 2 loos and showers on site (both unisex) but with such a small site we didn't have to wait at any time. The showers are great, no button to keep pressing and adjustable temperature. There's a baby change unit, hairdryer and straighteners. Fridge outside with an honesty box for local produce, and a wonderful cookery equipment shop which also sells amazing cakes Bus stop not too far away and absolutely loads to see and do in the area 100% going to be returning
