We were walking the Tarmara way this week . We stopped at the royal at 11.15 am , thinking they would be shut . The doors were open , we cheekily asked for a coffee . Which they served , very nice people and coffee . The menu looked amazing so would love to visit it again . Thank you so much

A warm and friendly welcome from the Barmaid 'Lucy' that offered us an Ale drink and a rum and coke. Delicious and tasty Gammon meal from the Cook 'Tracey' which we found cooked to the highest standard as excellent. We're definitely returning back to the 'the Royal Inn'. A old nunnery which housed the nuns which makes the royal inn a such relaxing and enjoyable place to visit.

This pub was a real surprise. I booked it based on recent reviews, but didn't have very high expectations. How wrong I was. We arrived to find it very busy with many local people, so clearly was very popular. The staff were stretched but could not be faulted, nor could the food and drinks. They have an excellent Salcombe beer on tap and a good choice of food on the menu with daily specials on the board. The mushroom stroganoff was especially worth a mention. We'll certainly be back when we are in the area again.

The menu was reduced which is understandable but the reduced menu was not complete Hubby ordered prawn cocktail no prawns I ordered soup no soup … the onion rings came swimming in grease and the ribs were tasteless ..the scampi was frozen and overcooked …after hearing other diners order they also were told at the point of ordering that some starters and mains were not available surely they should of been told on receiving their menus!!!it was clear there was a special board which we were not informed about …so unfortunately we did not enjoy the experience

Completely misled by the other reviews - wondered if we were actually at the same place?! Walked in and the chef was working behind the bar - not a good start. No surprise that the food was really, really awful. Ordered the fish and chips. Fish was solid it was so overcooked! Chips were tasteless and greasy. Mushy peas were somehow gooey and bone dry at the same time, but still tasteless. Scallop starter gave my partner a dodgy tummy & his burger main was also rubbish - he's had a better burger in a lay by. Staff were miserable and it's well over priced here. Don't waste your time, money or petrol going here. Deserves 0 stars - totally laughable. Stay away!

We enjoyed several meals here on our recent visit to Devon. As usual, they were delicious and the inn welcoming and comfortable. All the necessary anti-Covid precautions are in place but unobtrusive. This is a very special place with a long history, and for the twenty or so years we have been coming here it has been a delight. We are sure it will remain so for centuries to come! The Royal Inn scallops are a particular highlight, and my venison in a chocolate and chilli sauce was superb. The meat simply melted in the mouth. There is an excellent selection of drinks and the beer is very well-kept. The Royal Inn is the very best of British pubs!

We visited the Royal Inn several times during our holiday, a family run, beautiful old country pub serving great beer, lovely cider and delicious food. Our first visit was just a few days after they had reopened following lockdown, so they had the required measures in place, but this did not detract from the friendly welcome. We stopped by several times for a drink after that and twice for dinner on consecutive Fridays, which is fish night. Both meals were excellent - we chose beautiful fresh fish and chips the first time and delicious fresh crab the second time. Other meals are available if you don’t eat fish. The landlord, Paul, is a great character and he and his daughters made us feel so welcome each time, which was really appreciated. I cannot recommend highly enough and can’t wait to come back when we holiday here again.

An awesome pub and restaurant on the border of Devon and Cornwall. Located in Horsebridge with Stoke Climsland in Cornwall a small distance away. Great food at reasonable prices with a great atmosphere. "Charles I is reputed to have visited the pub during the civil war & left his seal in the granite step 'for services rendered'. From that day forth the pub became known as the Royal Inn. As you enter the Inn through its Devon porch, look for the seal leaded into the granite step beneath your feet." Well worth a visit, and take a small tour from their around a hidden gem of countryside in the Tamar Valley. Stoke Climsland - "The manor of Climsland was one of the seventeen Antiqua maneria of the Duchy of Cornwall. The manor was recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Climson; there were 5 hides of land and land for 24 ploughs. One hide was held by the lord (with 3 ploughs and 9 serfs) and 30 villeins and 30 smallholders had 17 ploughs and 4 hides of land".Explore the hidden villages and hamlets including Stoke Climsland and Luckett. ("Luckett a hamlet in unexplored east Cornwall situated in a former mining area beside the River Tamar. In the 12th century, Luckett became part of a Royal Deer Park called Kerrybullock, until it was disparked by Henry VIII in the 16th century).Stoke Climsland - "The manor of Climsland was one of the seventeen Antiqua maneria of the Duchy of Cornwall. The food was proper British pub food, cooked to perfection and served promptly. Out of all the places we visited on our trip to Cornwall and Devon, this was by far the best place for both food and friendly staff. The landlord/owner came and spoke to us after our meal. We returned to give this place another go, we had to pass on our way to Tavistock so was convenient. The welcome was much better, very much appreciated and improvement on our previous visit. One of our group had the burger and one had stuffed chicken breast, both said they enjoyed their meals. Two of us had a 'special', Venison suet. We agreed that it was pretty awful, the suet was rock hard, as I stuck my fork in it smashed into pieces and spread itself across the table! The meat, although plentiful, was very grisly, not good! The accompanying mash potatoes were in fact the worse I've ever had anywhere, not smooth, but dry and tasteless, in fact the whole meal was completely tasteless and a great disappointment. So in summary, improved service but two poor meals, having second thoughts about returning!

Especially regarding the toilets, need a revamp, toilet seat massive crack, door difficult to lock/close, no loo roll, no hand drier and an old damp towel hanging over said drier, didnt look very nice. agree to other reviewer, there was indeed a very unhappy looking lady behind the bar and not welcoming, a smile is free! re our score, we didnt eat today but have done and generally v good value

As we entered the dining side of the Royal Inn we were greeted by a lovely wood burner, most welcome on a very chilly night. The chillness however continued with the young lady behind the bar, she was not at all welcoming and made us feel we had interrupted her evening. Our table was reserved with our name on it, so she knew we were dining. After getting our drinks we sat and chatted for 10 mins, catching up with friends and glancing across at the specials board, after a further 10 mins had passed we hadn't been offered a menu, it wasn't exactly busy, just one other couple. I had to go to the bar and ask for the menus, bearing in mind there were four of us the young lady gave us 3.

Quite a few of the group were already inside when I arrived with my friend. As we tried to enter, the landlord stopped us saying my friend couldn't bring her water bottle inside. Initially we thought he was joking as I have never been asked to leave a water bottle outside. He was very abrupt, stating he would never make any money if everyone brought their own drinks inside. At this point I told him we were intending to purchase both food and drinks, but he was insistent we left the water bottle in the car.

On a wonderfully warm Autumn day turned up for lunch & sat on the upper deck outside - one of our party needed a sun hat! Access to tables was for disabled me hindered by overgrown bushes encroaching onto the path. We chose mains of lasagne and two curries & a large double gammon steak with skinnies plus beverages. The large Rioja was very pleasant when served, having been forgotten by bar staff. After the meal, Host & Hostess came to clear away and he stayed as he usually does with little encouragement to engage in cheery banter for a while, after which Bramble came up and introduced herself to us (golden retriever) & did the same. All very pleasant and just the tonic all of us were hoping for. The setting alongside Horsebridge over the Tamar is exceptional.

We live locally and It's our only place to go. My sons love the beer (Proper Job) and if visiting always say book the ROYAL. The food never fails some specials as well as menus.. All local food. Great for children they have a room off the bars..Seats out side. And a patio. Owner not grumpy as signs says. And quite a character.. No white tablecloths just great pub food and a friendly atmosphere.. Give it a go..

Have not been to here for a couple of years but it is still up to its high standards. The specials always has items which you wouldn't usually see and the beer always tastes excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful.

I visited the pub for the first time a couple of weeks ago with my boyfriend and his parents. Not only did we receive a polite and warm welcome, but the atmosphere and feel of the pub was perfect! The food was absolutely stunning and the service was extremely quick. I've now visited the pub several times and have been equally as pleased every time! A truly wonderful traditional pub and I would highly recommend!!!

I have recently enjoyed a meal at the Royal Inn. The bar staff were great, the waiting staff were very pleasant and the seafood linguine was probably the best I have ever had. I recommend that anyone who likes seafood should try it.

Dropped in for lunch on a walk into Cornwall and we were delighted. Good beer and traditional cider along with an excellent lunch. Very friendly pub serving well executed freshly cooked food in a delightful location. Flagstone floors, fireplace and proper bar all add to the charm. The staff were great and made us feel very welcome. Difficult to fault.

The inn was recommended by our excellent B&B at Higher Woodley Farm. Old 15th century building near the The Inn was once a nunnery and stands near the ancient Horsebridge, which was built over the River Tamar in 1437 by French Benedictine monks. Charles I is reputed to have visited the pub during the civil war & left his seal in the granite step 'for services rendered'. From that day forth the pub became known as the Royal Inn.We were there on a Saturday night and it was quite busy. Young couple were celebrating their 10th Wedding Anniversary staying in a Band B close by. The look in their eye suggested the bcelebration still had some way to run. There were quite a few rowdy locals who were enjoying there Saturday night and creating a very friendly atmosphere. the publican was away and the staff behind the bar were 'ring ins' for the night. They were run off their feet. There was an open fire and great atmosphere. The meals were a good size. We both had fish and it was excellent. Not sure how some of ythe patrons were making it home. Walking one would hope. Very pleasant way to spend a Saturday Evening. Good food, good company. A great little pub

Visited midweek and without booking and we were made to feel welcome and were accommodated (best to book they got very busy). A really good choice of food with some evening specials. The food was very good with quality meat, all home cooked and portion size was generous. Well done to the landlord and staff; we will travel to visit more often now we have been reminded of the high standard here.

We spent an enjoyable evening at the Royal Inn, after making a reservation. We were staying closeby otherwise I don't know that we would have found it!The building is very old, very authentic and very welcoming. The food was very good and arrived hot (one ribs and one fish special). They appeared to be a bit short staffed so service was a bit slow, but that was not a problem for us.If we are ever back in this lovely area, we would happily eat there again.

Well maybe my expectations were too high after reading the reviews on here, but I certainly won't be visiting again. I had the scallops, served randomly in a bowl with boiled potatoes, and clearly cooked in either a dirty frying pan or in with my dad's steak as they had a strange beef flavour to them. The scami looked okay, but given the high prices I would have expected something a bit more gastro pub, and this place is not in that league by a long way.

The landlord is a character and someone who, I was warned beforehand, does not suffer fools gladly! So we were on our best behaviour; but he was very friendly and interesting to chat with.We had a great evening. The food was delicious, especially the house hamburger. Loved the Otter Amber ale too! Service was good.We look forward to our next visit.

We visited the Royal Inn three times in a week as we were renting a house just across the bridge and we loved it! Paul the landlord and his wife made us feel like part of the family and our girls (11, 13, 15 and 24) would have eaten there every night if they could! Beautiful home cooked local food with reasonable prices ( chilli only £7, scallops on crushed new potatoes £13). You need to book as its busy every night and we were so glad we did before we arrived on the Friday as there were seven of us and we wouldn't have got in. Great Cornish ales too and lovely wine, and the desserts were huge! We will be back, thanks Paul!

Four visits so far, and each one a success. The food is great value, portions are generous, and pricing very reasonable. Nice regular menu plus a changing array of specials, so finding something for everyone is very easy. Everything always seems very fresh too.The pub-restaurant is family owned and run, and it shows. It has a friendly and casual atmosphere, but is still very efficient - even with large groups they manage to get all means served at the same time.Booking recommended even during the week, as the place attracts diners from miles around - including us!

We went for pizza the 1st evening while camping and then breakfast the following morning. Amazing food at a good fair price, loads of amazing bike gear and bikes. Lovely atmosphere 👌 great staff, everything cooked fresh.

Came in for Sunday roast and food was 10/10, best roast we have had for quite a while. What lacked was the service. We booked for 3pm and whilst we appreciate we entered at a busy time wrapping up peak time, service received wasn’t great from the off. One particular server seemed to be in quite a mood and was remarkably blunt “no” when we asked questions about getting some extra yorkshires (which we were a bit surprised the pork meal didn’t come with, but our fault for not reading the menu properly!) Plus someone seemed to think it was a great idea to loudly polish/sort out the cutlery at the bar, which was right next to our table, making conversation quite difficult and picked up by all 4 members of our party. Shame as food was amazing and would go back, but service lacked. 3pm bookings just as important as 12pm as all paying the same!

The restaurant was recommended to me and did not disappoint. First class, friendly service and excellent food. The online menu seemed limited but there were plenty of other options on the specials board.
