Royal George Pub in Scarborough

Wanted something light for last night's food after a lot of heavy carbs meals recently. We both had salad, tuna, and ham, tuna salad had a separate portion of mayo, which we had to mix in ourselves, lots of fresh salad ingredients, and new potatoes. Ham salad had tasty ham, a separate portion of Branston pickle, both had separate pots of salad dressing, which is a great idea because not everyone likes salad dressing and wholemeal bread, butter was a bit hard so difficult to spread, but still lovely, dog friendly pub, very helpful staff, great pint of Theakstons Best bitter, and good range of flavoured gins.

Excellent food & brilliant relaxing atmosphere. Choose Steers Seafood Burger which is all homemade & absolutely delicious. The chunky chips are amazing.

Nice pub with a good choice of bar food and at reasonable prices too, but limited if you are vegan, as it is on the coast what can you expect. Staff on the whole are pleasant and welcoming to all. Dog friendly with rules for them being allowed in that are enforced. The same with the rule of no children being allowed into the lounge on the right hand side. As there are only 2 places in the village that serve alcohol to be consumed on the premises this is the one with the internal atmosphere, the other has the external views.

Great fish & chips and very dog friendly!

Friendly and accommodating- whilst tables were reserved we were welcome to sit until reservers arrived. Definitely a place to stop by for drinks. The food looked delicious, we’d already got a booking elsewhere but were tempted to cancel!

We visited on a Friday night. Delicious food and lovely atmosphere. It’s also dog friendly!! Would recommend 😊

Great traditional pub with open fire

We called in for lunch today, friendly staff great building, noticed straight away how clean it was, we had the Fish & Chip lunch and it was excellent, not too big but plate full, a very good pint of John Smiths and reasonably priced. We enjoyed it so much we asked about the accomodation so we can plan a stay

Been to this pub many times and it never disappoints, Beer is always good and the food is exceptional.. We went in for quick pub lunch and wow wee , The food was fantastic and great portions.. fire was roaring away it’s so cosy. And the main thing is you can take your best four legged friends in too .

Had a pint of moretti and their jacket potatoes with chilli very nice. Barmaid was very nice and always smiling

Lovely weekend at the Royal George. Great value for money. Good clean room with everything you need. Excellent food and drink served. Staff very good.

It’s easy to overlook this pub in the middle as many have their attention stolen by the commanding pub on the seafront. However this pub never disappoints. We often visit for drinks, either sitting in the cosy bar area next to the fire, or outside on the cobbled street watching the world go by. We always visit for food as it’s exceptional. Most recently we had the fish cakes and steak pie - excellent. The fish cakes were packed full of strong smoked haddock, not bulked with potato! The wine and beer offering is good. Everything fairly priced. If I could pick this pub up and move it to my village down south, I would.

Popped in for a cheeky one after a very blowy walk! Lovely atmosphere warm and cosy. Decided to have lunch and my word...fish and chips to die for! All homemade including tartare sauce and mushy peas. Very busy but staff on the ball and very welcoming. Highly recommended!

Lovely pub and very friendly staff. Food was amazing! Nice veggie choices. Broccoli and cheese bake my husband said was amazing, I had the hot chilli which was fabulous! Dog friendly too x

Friendly pub in centre of the village. Got us a table of 4 on a Friday evening with great food and decent selection of drinks.

Lovely well filled crab sandwich with delicious chunky chips and we'll dressed salad

Just stayed for one night. Fantastic location. And a decent enough welcome. Room lovely, clean and comfy bed. Lovely quality tea.and coffee. We were asked what time would we like breakfast the choice was 8, 8.30, 9 or 9.30 we chose 9am we came down for breakfast and service was good.. then we chose full breakfast and a good size one turned up!! When we started eating it was clear it had been cooked and left to keep warm ages the egg looked like the yolk had been on somebody elses plate hash brown had such a hard bottem you couldn't get your teeth though it, I'm sure they knew how bad it was as they kept well out of the way. We left lots of the breakfast! We proceeded to check out and she said was everything OK ? I said lovely apart of the breakfast that had been kept warm far too long.. she just said sorry and not very sincerly and changed the subject.. we travel alot and vote with our feet.. won't be returning to stay at the Royal george. Such a shame. But we didn't let it ruin our lovely trip to Staithes..and we will be back......

Although the Royal George lacks the enviable position of the Cod and Lobster, it feels much more like ‘a pub’. It is cosy and old fashioned. We thought the food was the best of the three pubs in the village and ate here several times.

Beautiful cosy pub. Great homemade food great pint Reasonable priced and good portions. Staff friendly and welcoming dogs welcome on a short lead but not wet dogs. Would definitely recommend a pint or two and a meal here.

Eaten here on Saturday and now back for a drink. Saturday was very busy but both day the service had been fast and pleasant. Highly recommend the Theakston best bitter, a very good pint.

We were visiting and staying near Runswick Bay, and on a whim (due to the beautiful weather) we decided to walk the Cleveland Way trail along the cliff-tops to Staithes. When we arrived, we were hungry to say the least! We've been to the Cod & Lobster a few times in the past and didn't enjoy it, so we opted to try out The Royal George. It was fairly busy, but the staff seemed pretty productive. The waitress mentioned that they were stopping serving food in 6 minutes so we had to order fast, so my partner ordered Fish & Chips, and I ordered the Smoked Haddock Fishcakes with Mushy peas, chips and tartare sauce. We didn't wait long and the food was brought straight over. Not sure if it tasted delicious because it was, or if it was because we were starving! The staff were super attentive and productive, and the atmosphere was pretty cozy and relaxed. We really enjoyed the meal and the experience. We left fuelled up, ready for the long walk back to Runswick along the cliff tops. Highly recommended.

I had the chicken parma my wife had the scampi the food was excellent and the young lady behind the bar could not have been more helpful. 100%

Visited on a busy bank holiday at lunchtime. The staff were welcoming and friendly, and there was a nice atmosphere with most tables taken. We had steak pie (really good, lots of good quality steak, lovely shortcrust pastry and lots of veg) and seafood burger which was freshly made and had smoked haddock, cod and whole prawn in it. Lovely chips! Good value as well.

Good old pub with lovely clean rooms , staff were lovely and really helpful, although we stayed in the room with the external bathroom which for our sole use and was just across the landing

Visited staithes and called in for lunch, had a crab sandwich on white bread was nice with chips and salad and a pint of moretti, the pub was an old looking stile which was lovely, the staff were friendly enough behind the bar , there wasn't any atmosphere just a couple of families having a drink which was nice

Me and a friend came here for dinner Monday and was blown away by the quality of the food! Huge portions, super tasty and the chips were incredible! Very very reasonable prices for both food and drink. Will definitely come back again 😄

We ate in here on our last night in and wish we had eaten in here more. We will be back next year so will go in again. We ordered 2 surf and turf - this was 2 decent sized steaks calamari, whitebait and scampi served with salad, chips and coleslaw. Beat both me and my husband. Daughter had a haddock and chips which looked lovely and she said it was. Teenage son ordered the seafood burger which looked nice but he said went a bit soggy and was difficult to pick up by the end. Overall , lovely pub, warm on a chilly evening , we will be back!

We always come here for lunch when in Staithes and usually have crab sandwiches. Really nice food; plenty of it and very fresh! Would definitely recommend to others.

Whilst it can still get busy in the George, it’s more spacious and less cramped than some others in Staithes. Friendly welcome by the barmaid, who fetched a dog bowl of fresh water for our dog. Carpeted inside , so essential for dogs that like a bit of comfort laid out, whilst you’re eating and drinking. We had a pint and half of Birra Moretti and we both had the Tuna Mayonnaise sandwich with chips and salad. Very impressed with the service, the quality and quantity of the food. A very good experience and one we’ll repeat.

The chicken hot shot parmo was huge and delicious. You will not be disappointed by the food portions and quality in this pub!

Absolutely amazing!! We reserved a table via email for a table here for my husband's birthday. We're not from the area but after reading reviews we gave it a go! Arrived at 12pm on a Wednesday to a very quiet pub however the welcome was friendly and welcoming. A good lunch menu. A shame the specials board is only available on an evening (not mentioned on the board) but still good selection. Our 19 old daughter has recently been diagnosed with Coeliac disease so she can't eat gluten. The pub was very accommodating to her needs. Choice of drinks and food that she could have and they happily provided a burger without the bun without issue. After bringing over the food they asked her if she wanted gluten free onion rings done in gluten free batter. We were a little taken aback by such a lovely gesture. She wasn't made to feel awkward or tricky in any way. All the food was exceptional. The onion rings were amazing too!! We all enjoyed them!! The children's menu was great, our youngest really enjoyed it and hubby said it was the best pie (with meat filled gravy!!) he'd ever had!! Would not hesitate to return. Lovely people, lovely pub. Amazing food. It was a lot busier when we left, we definitely timed it right! 🤣😁A HUGE thank you to all involved! We will be back for definite!!!

Went there for lunch, the food was nice and we didn't wait that long, so thought we would go there for dinner, unfortunately the wait for the food was extremely long and the food this time was very average.

Brilliant again. Our 3rd stay at this lovely atmospheric pub in Staithes. The accommodation is lovely, just 3 rooms so always peaceful. Lovely breakfast and good pub food with a nice menu. Staff always lovely. This is now our go to place when we visit the Whitby area.

Breakfast was lovely, served by a smiley girl. Bed was comfy, all in all a much better experience than the night before. All in all a really decent pub in a pretty village

Cancelled our booking 2 hrs before we were meant to be checking in. Claimed it was because we would be late for check in, despite requesting the correct time 3 months before on the booking. Do not stay!!! We found something much nicer and cheaper nearby last minute

Had two lovely evening meals here. My hubby had the steak and ribs that were delicious. I had prawn salad and Whitby scampi which I also enjoyed. Great old pub with nice staff!

This is definitely the best place to eat in Staithes. The food is excellent, the staff are friendly and it had my favourite beer as well. We pretty much worked our way throuth the menu during our stay, but my favourite was the steak pie, and my wife's was the fish burger, A close second of mine was the fish and chips. The chilli was good too.

Just got back home from staying at The Royal George. Perfect Location , 30 seconds walk to the stunning old Fishing port., Simply beautiful, we went to whitby, and Sand send and we quickly came back here. The other places were to big with little to offer but this little village with its shops was a real Gem. Great Pub with an excellent full English breakfast, great rooms and a great price. The Staff were so friendly and we will be back. Thank you again. Pete Fiona x

We stopped off here for lunch when visiting staithes...and the food was amazing....you gotta try their homemade chips...just like my dad used to make 😋...friendly welcome...just a beautiful little place ...thanks for having us...we will be back🥰

A very warm Yorkshire welcome, shown to a smart, nipping clean room with ensuite. The bar was cosy and had a great atmosphere both afternoon and into the evening. We did not have an evening meal but the food smelt and looked fantastic. We slept well in comfortable bed the breakfast was top notch. Great single night stay and will certainly return.

Great location and a super nice hotel. It was a great location and has a bar/restaurant in the hotel. Just a note, you will have to take your suitcases up two flights of stairs, as there are no elevators. The room is on the small side but comfortable. The bathroom is small but super clean. I would suggest that they put an additional light above the mirror as it was kinda hard to put my makeup. Also, maybe suggest they put up additional hooks for towels. The shower is really

Lovely traditional pub in the heart of Staithes. The crab sandwich was awesome, very fresh and more crab than bread! Service was super friendly and dogs welcome too.

Visited Staithes and planned to get some fish and chips but that spot was closed until late on, so came across the Royal George and glad we did. It was busy with guests all eating. A good sign! Friendly welcome by a lady and quickly seated. The food was delicious! We had fish & chips, double burger and scampi. All were very good sized portions and very reasonaly priced we thought. The pub was welcoming and clean. We would definitely recommend.

Had chilli was swimming in oil wouldn't recommend . Fish and chips looked nice . Guinness was from a can too .waited a while too.

My favourie pub in the village. Maybe thats because it sells a decent pint of Old Peculiar. We went back for food. My Parmo was delicious and the wife was very impressed with her seafood salad. Portion were a very good size and the prices reasonable.

Been visiting Staithes & this particular pub for many a year. It’s a proper pub, proper beer, proper food. Landlord, staff & locals all very friendly. Enjoyed 2 really good meals with our drinks.

12th Dec , 2023 had the best meal today , atmosphere was so nice and relaxing. Lovely place.. staff very friendly, glad we could take our Great dane dog there .. I had vegetarian, and partner had fish and chips, he enjoyed them.

The food was OK but not great. We received Yorkshire puddings that were still frozen at the bottom, which when I spoke to the server she rolled her eyes as though to say, 'not again', the puddings were replaced, and whilst hot, they tasted deep-fried. The veg didn't taste fresh, and the beef was chewy. At £13.95 per person it wasn't value for money. The staff were pleasant and welcoming it was just the food letting them down. We won't be returning for this reason.

Great place, I just wish it was nearer to where I live. On this occasion we didn't eat but I have done in the recent past and food was very good. What like even more is the fact that you can get an exceptional pint of Old Peculiar on tap, good stuff long may it last.

We found it very difficult to book a meal as a walk in we asked if there was any availability and was told to call back later when we returned they said they were full and couldn’t guarantee if we came back later that they could accommodate us we went elsewhere who allowed us to be on a waiting list and enabled us to eat a lovely meal on both nights of our stay

A definite 5 stars in every respect is our experience. Sunday lunch is up there with the best available anywhere. We had prior notification from a friend that the adult portion available from the menu was huge so we opted for three children sized options from the menu. Highly recommended!

I had a crab sandwich, & a glass of white wine. It's was nice & very enjoyable. Relax & reasonnable.

What a nice friendly place, a lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, a nice range of beers and the food looks fabulous, I had a fresh crab sandwich with salad and chunky chips, very tasty and good value for money.

Best crab sandwiches around for miles. Fresh, generous amount not mixed with mayonnaise to make it go further....100% crab meat. Delicious!! And the service + friendliness is very good. Also - it's a dog friendly pub. My favourite!

Netter Pub. Leider war das Essen nicht hervorragend. Ich haette mir mehr Fischgerichte gewünscht anstatt der überall in jedem Pub gleichen Kueche. Nach 4 Wochen Urlaub kann man die Pub Klassiker wirklich nicht mehr sehen

Called in because they had tuna salad and Ham salad on menu well wasn't expecting what we got fantastic as u can see from photos and not expensive we thoroughly enjoyed ,I had ham salad my wife had tuna salad best salad in a pub we have had in a long time new potatoes were beautiful in fact everything was fresh and tasty if you are in Staithes call in and try the salad Really beautiful 😍

We popped in for a beer and some chips whilst in Staithes. Friendly staff, good Moretti on tap, food was decent. Would recommend this pub!

Huge piece of flaky fish and delicious cole slaw. One server with long braid seemed unhappy with her job, but the dark haired server had a great smile.

It was a Bed and Breakfast stay for us and an absolutely ideal venue and experience. Regret not having time to sample the bar or courtyard. The room was lovely and overlooked the street so we were really immersed in the Staithes atmosphere. The full English Breakfast was perfection on a plate and service second to non. Would highly recommend a stay and Staithes visit.

Did have anything to eat, but the locals in there were friendly and I had a nice pint.

We were walking part of the Cleveland Way from Saltburn to Whitby and stayed overnight at the Royal George. Arriving parched mid afternoon, we had a lovely pint of cider sitting at the front in the sun. After that, we checked in. A lovely helpful staff member showed us to our room. A double en suite, it had everything that was needed - mineral water, lots of tea and coffee, a nice en suite with toiletries, comfortable bed, charging points, etc. It was in good repair and the newish double glazing very nearly coped with the herring gulls at 5am! We wandered around Staithes, then returned for another pint, before having a shower and then eating. The food was fantastic - but erring on the 'too much'. I had the surf n turf. A 10 oz sirloin with whitebait, scampi and calamari rings, etc. The seafood salad was also ordered - what a plateful. The side order of chips was redundant. We had a couple of glasses of wine. All very enjoyable. The staff were all great. In the morning, breakfast was served in a small breakfast room. I had the full english - which was daft given what I ate the night before. But it was all lovely and again, we were looked after by friendly and helpful staff. We packed up and set off on the rest of our walk to Whitby. I would happily stay here again. I would certainly happily drink and eat here again. Please note that they do a lunch and then evening food service - it is not an all day service. Also, it's well worth booking in to eat as the Royal George is quite small and so pitching up ad hoc may leave you disappointed.

Lovely little place stopped for a drink with the dog 🐕 considered having food however thought it was a little expensive. Lovely atmosphere would recommend stopping off there on way back up hill.

Amazing food and a nice pub for all the family, we were all super stuffed from just a main course and we can eat a lot, good value for money and high quality fodder. Sat outside under cover so it was really lovely as inside was full. Highly recommended if you're staying nearby and easy to find/access on the high street.

The best tartar sauce I've ever had

Did not even get the chance to eat here!…walked through the door to enquire about a table, to be told in an abrupt manner “NO” no nice tone, nothing to be explained if we could wait….I then asked ok do you have an option of a waiting list? The lady barked at me that “this couple is before you” pointing to the side of me, “and they have paid for a drink!” At this point I said ok and walked away, I am shocked that this lady is working in hospitality. If we had got as far as being told we could wait and have a drink I would absolutely have sat paid for a drink for 6x people. This review is not to deter people away from eating here, but for the manager to provide some customer service to their staff.

We were able to reserve a table for early evening and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Choice of seating: tap room to the right, tables to the left and a decent courtyard to the rear (no sea view). Staff were welcoming and helpful, expect a traditional pub atmosphere rather than 'smashed avacado and almond milk latte', if you know what I mean. Good menu and well cooked food. Will return.

Had special cod loin & dauphinoise potatoes,butter sauce,green veg today. Absolutely fantastic! Brilliant! Compliments to the chef.

Good place to stop for a drink.

Very popular place on the main street down to the harbour, quite near the end of the roadway in. Plenty of choice and on a busy day it may be better to book ahead or get in early. Well known for its crab sandwich, so do try those at lunchtime. Plenty of other choices as well as specials board, plus good spread of drinks on tap or in bottles, all very good value for money and decent sized portions.

So nice want to thank the staff so friendly will be back ☺️

2nd visit.A pleasant bar with pleasant staff in yhe middle of the old part of Runswick Bay. Very well kept real ale on both occasions. Enjoyable.

A great pub and located across from our BnB. Great beer as well. Loved it.
