Food was ok. Price was a little steep. Service was nothing to write home about. BUT what was really annoying, after paying by card and leaving, was being chased down on a busy pavement by a member of staff saying the payment didn't go through - tried again and again, then another card and the another card with the staff member carrying the payment machine saying all declined when none of them should have failed ! Because golden grid has been established for such a long time you'd have thought they would have sorted this problem out but apparently not ! it's not like it would cost them much to get better devices with better reception but no they can't be bothered. SO be prepared to be chased down and embarrassed.

We have been loyal customers of the Golden Grid for years. But unfortunately tonight the service lost our patronage perhaps for good. We have always been impressed with the quality of the food and the level of customer service that this establishment provides. However the service tonight was below parr. I can only classify it as hostile, rude and apathetic. Service was slow from the start. With staff seemingly more interested in hanging out in the kitchen than on the floor. When we were finally waited on the staff member was chewing gum as he took the order. A clear sign of his lack of interest. When serving he would lean over a member of our party repeatedly passing drinks to the end of the table out of his reach and practically knocking into her every time. There was a mix up with the order (which happens and isn’t in and on itself a problem), and in fairness I do not believe was wholly the waiters fault, however when discussing it, I was greeted with hostility and eye rolling. After that, other t bringing out the order, we were largely and deliberately ignored. The few tables such as there were remained stacked full of dirty plates while the wait staff again disappeared into the kitchen for long periods of time. We had to ask for our table to be cleared several times, so that we could order desserts. They took a few plates away and then left us waiting for about 15 minutes, still with the remaining dirty plates and cutlery. We asked politely again that the table be cleared and if we could order deserts, upon which one staff member completely ignored us and walked off while the other rudely replied that they were busy. There were only 7 covers in the room. She proceeded to snap at me that she needed to serve the table behind us. I dread to think how they would cope if it was actually busy. At this we decided enough was enough and that it was time to go. We left to pay downstairs. There was no member of staff there either. Had we been more dishonest types we could have easily walked off without paying. Needless to say we paid our bill and left. I have to say we were shocked. I’m not sure if this is how the new owner usually manages his businesses, or if this is the result of untrained and uncaring staff members. But the wait staff in any establishment being the front face of the business embody its values. I echo what I said above, currently the values presented are rude, apathetic and hostile. Which are entirely opposite to the terrific reputation that this establishment has held for countless years. Sadly this debacle has resulted in a loss of our patronage and this disappointed review.

Totally lovely! We arrived at 7pm on Friday, everywhere else seemed to be closing up. Golden Grid was still busy. I'm sure the sign said closing at 7.30 but we left at 8pm and customers still arriving. Haddock and chips, cod and chips with mushy peas, tea for 2, total £35.25. Food was great, young man upstairs was run off his feet but coping well. Very extensive menu including lobster, mussels and, I will be back, chowder!

Two out of five oysters were bad. The other three were nice. My tea had a foreign body in it. They took the tea off the bill without me asking. When we told them about the oysters they called the manager. She, without apologising, said the best she can do is take 10% off the bill. I suggested she didn't charge us for bad oysters. I said not to worry it will all go on my YouTube channel (speaker the hat man). Now she shouted at me to be quiet and suddenly found out she can reduce the bill by the price of the two oysters. No apology but fear of social media. Furthermore this is a venue which welcomes dogs yet it purports to be an up market restaurant.

Horrendous! Worst meal ever! Ordered moules mariniere as a starter and it was rancid, the smell was clearly off and it should never have been served (it was the sauce not the mussels). They took it off the bill admittedly. Followed by half lobster for mains - it was like rubber, could barely get it out of the shell. £22.50 for a tiny claw and without exaggerating - about 2” of edible lobster and all it came with was chips, a bit of limp rocket and a slice of lemon. Absolute ripoff! We are locals not tourists and I will never set foot in there again! Feel sad that all the tourists think this is all Scarborough has to offer!

Excellent seafood restaurant, if you want a simple fish supper or more extensive menu like lobster 🦞 I can highly recommend. We had the fish pie (stacked with fish topped with creamy mash and a layer of mild cheese) and Moule Marnier (more than enough Moules in a creamy garlic sauce). Washed down with a reasonably priced bottle of wine, fantastic.

We had high hopes for the food here, so thought we would just try a small fish and chips on our first night in Scarborough, then if any good would return and be a bit more adventurous. But.... The chips were dry, the mushy peas were like bullets, and you actually had to pay extra for the peas! The tartare sauce is the worst I've ever tasted too. The fish was ok once you got through the extra thick batter. Very overpriced and disappointing. Never normally review restaurants, but wouldn't like people to waste their money.

The coffee making facilities are situated under the stairs out of the customers direct view. But from where I was sitting you could see the staff working from the reflection in large mirror on the wall. I watched the waitress with long red hair in one of the large mirrors. She was sipping customers coffee before they were delivered to tables. She was also dipping biscuits into customers coffee and eating them. Another much older member of staff was stood there vaping. I think this venue needs investigating. It clearly has disgraceful hygiene and poor work ethics from staff. We didn't hang around.

The Golden Grid looks like a charmingly authentic harbour front fish and chips shop. On further experience it becomes more faded, jaded and old fashioned. Portion size was decent enough. The fish batter was light and bubbly, the fish was flaky. The fish pie was superheated and largely lacking in... fish. Surrounded by a moat of overcooked peas that reminded me of my grandmother's cooking. She hated peas and made them suffer for at least an hour on the hob ;-) The mushy peas were worse. Overcooked, brown in places and not at all to my taste. Service: someone took our order and money, that was about it. I cannot recommend this place apart from the tea. I enjoyed the tea.

Iv reviewed hundreds of places over the years and I rarely leave a bad review as most establishments try to rectify a problem where possible… but this place is absolutely TERRIBLE! Overpriced for a start but I accepted that I was on the seafront on a busy summers day. Iv been in cleaner establishments but again I appreciate that they were busy. The food when it came didn’t look great but I gave it a try. £17.95 for medium ( more like small) fish and chips with mushy peas and a pot of tea. The chips were mostly black and part of the fish inedible as it was burnt. The peas were hard and the tea only appeared after I waved down the waitress to remind her. When I told her how bad the food was she said because I had ate some there was nothing she could do except reduce the bill by 10%.. dreadful customer service and awful, tasteless, overpriced food. I would advise you to avoid and I will certainly ever be returning

Dessert was disappointing, apple crumble was not crumbly, had a weird spongy top. I asked for ice cream INSTEAD of custard and got charged an additional £1.50 for the privilege. When we arrived, we were ushered upstairs but then told not to sit next to the window as we were not a party of six. Less than ten minutes later another party of 3 arrived and sat by the window and the waitress said nothing. Double standards. Didn’t think the food really represented value for money. The sticky toffee pudding was a shop bought processed imitation that had very little flavour. Avoid desserts they really were not great.

GG was recommended by the staff of the castle and we don't regret choosing this as our lunch destination from a million chip shops in a sea-side city on a stormy day! Fresh food, the restaurant takes advantage of being located by the harbour. We were pre-settled to taste their fish 'n chips and totally missed the fish cake and lobster dishes. However, the batter fried calamari was brilliant as well. The chips felt a bit soggy and burnt, but hey it's ok. The medium fish we ordered was quite large in reality! Haddocks/cods are accompanied by green peas/mushy peas/beans/gravy/curry sauce. Salt and pepper pots need to be cleaned as they remained clogged. You won't find the tarter sauce on the menu, but yes, they will come upon request. The ambience will make you time travel to a '90s vintage busy eatery with all the wooden furniture and paintings. The service won't let you occupy a preferable sea-view window table if you are not more than four persons. The service was pleasant though. We stayed here for about a couple of hours, spent a brilliant family time as other families with kids and friends were around as well. Should have taken a lobster damn it. I wonder if they had soup of the day.

Given the food a four star rating as I’m sure it was nice…the menus looked night anyway! However myself as a party of 12 turned up on Saturday and asked if there was space for us to eat. Obviously being a large party we would more than understood if there wasn’t enough room for us. However we was told yes come in and shown to different tables. Which was more than okay as again we understand we was a large table. We all looked at the menus that were handed to us and settled on fish finger sandwiches with chips and large lemonades…. To be told we weren’t spending enough money on what we had ordered and wasn’t welcome…..we would only be served if we ordered more expensive items from the menu! The price was never the issue it was the amount of food that we would have been served and non of us on a day out at the seaside wanted plate fulls of food as a lunch! We quickly left and went to McDonald’s. (lol) obviously 12 people eating and drinking wasn’t enough money for this establishment!!

It didn't live up to expectation - it was expensive, bland and consisted of only one type of fish and spoiled by uncooked grated carrot. A bit of garlic or a few herbs would have made all the difference. Disappointing for a specialist seafood restaurant.

Unfortunately read reviews after we'd ordered. One said tourist trap - avoid Another said expensive canned food Both very accurate. "kwik save" scampi "really good fish pie" unsure how they conjured that title with frozen cheap uniformly cubed "fish" Throw a couple of sparkling waters in and a grand total of 35 squids! Really really disappointed being so close to wonderful fresh catches.

Probably one of the best fish n chip restaurants we've been to in some time! The service was great, very friendly! The atmosphere was welcoming and full of character! The food, the batter was perfectly light which was the cherry on the cake for me! My Mum had the soup which she believes was a spicy tomato, possibly pepper too. Highly recommend if you happen to be in the area!

Never been to this restaurant before but have passed it dozens of times over the years. We were heading for an adjacent fish and chip shop but it was shut. Decided to call in here instead. Very pleasant waiting staff and order was taken promptly. Food was cooked to order and arrived piping hot. I opted for bread and butter and would have preferred brown bread but no worries. Hubby chose mushy peas. (Must admit this was a surprise because where we come from if you eat in for fish and chips you get both bread and butter and peas along with a pot of tea included in the price) As we ate the restaurant thinned out a bit and staff were very diligent in clearing and wiping tables. Thoroughly enjoyed our meals and guess we have found a new place to dine next time we are in Scarborough.

Awful place. An empty restaurant and I waited for 40 mins to be served. Meal was adequate. Overpriced and small. A bit scruffy, no attention to detail and grubby. Carpet needs a good clean and it needs a general spruce up. Absolutely no atmosphere and felt in the way.

Been here lots of times in the past and it's been fine. This time when I went the staff were verging on rude. The food was OK at best. There are lots of places to eat in Scarborough, do yourself a favor and go to one of those.

Couldn't fault the quantity cost or quality. Ordered from the vegan menu chips curry sauce and pea fritter. Only problem was the food wasn't piping hot surprising since it was cooked to order in a deep fat fryer.

We had a lovely lunch with family today, enjoying the view from above and the sunshine. However, when my food was being served, the sizzling from the oil in it landed on my husband's coat. When we asked for the bill, I explained the situation to the lady, who by the way was the person who served us the food, and she barely apologized. I would expect a better handling of the situation...

My son has a dairy allergy and often has to settle for sorbet when at an ice cream parlour. Truly Scrumptious gave him an amazing choice of dairy free ice creams and toppings. We wouldn’t normally have 3 ice creams in 3 days but he was just so excited that he had choices, how could we not??!!

If you like lumpy mashed potato, tasteless veg and watery gravy, you will like this place. I have never seen a more sorry looking carvery in my life.
