Very expensive for both the quality and the amount you get. Chips were dry and didn’t taste fresh at all; and so few at £17-20 a plate. Homemade pie was average; again not worth the £18 price tag . Had to ask multiple times for many items that were forgotten despite reminders. You’ll get better quality and amount at one of the takeaways. Decor aside this sit in falls short of average so we won’t be returning.

Small portions fir prices charged. Staff not clear on menu. Several people asked fir tables in window which were reserved and then they allowed someone who hadn't reserved to have it. Avoid. Over priced and not that great. Wish had gone anywhere else.

Nice fish but many of the chips were black and poor quality. Asked if everything was ok and replied apart from all these black chips. Waitress apologised and said she would inform chef, took the plates, placed them on a bar and returned to cash desk. No time to inform anyone. Charged full price so won’t return.

Sunday 29th Mothers Day I walked in an approached the female member of staff who was stood at the bottom of the stairs she gave me a very cold stare there was no smile or a warm welcome I asked for a table explaining I was a solo customer, she pointed to a small table right in front of the door and said “sit there if you want to”. I looked around there were plenty of empty tables only a couple were being used so I asked if I could sit away from the door her response was “yes but I’ll have to move you if anyone else wants it”. I walked out I couldn’t believe what had happened I could understand her not wanting to give me a different table if the restaurant was busy downstairs but it wasn’t I can only think the restaurant doesn’t want solo customers. I ended up buying fish and chips from a very busy takeaway the staff were very friendly the food was lovely. I will be writing a very different review about that business.

Called in here today for lunch, WHAT A MISTAKE! Don't get me wrong I don't mind paying for food that is expensive if it's good and well prepared, however today's offering was expensive but poor quality and not in the least appetising. We were pointed towards our table that wasn't really comfortable due to lack of space between other tables, infact when a group of 3 tried to sit at the next table we had to move our table and chairs backwards so that they could get in and sit on 2 of the chairs, one of their 4 chairs was completely unusable due to a stack of high chairs jamming it in. Our order was taken and we had quite a long wait for our food ( they were quite busy) the order was taken by a pleasant young lady. When the food did arrive although my haddock was really hot the chips were just lukewarm, I thought that bread came with the meal so had to ask for it, it came quickly but by then the chips were stone cold. I asked a waitress if it was possible to have some hot chips and she went to remove the whole plate, I pointed out the fish would probably be cold by the time it was returned so put it onto my side plate to continue eating it. When the chips came back they had obviously been scrapped onto a fresh plate and microwaved (hard on the outside nuclear hot in the middle). Wife went for the salmon in a creamy garlic butter sauce 🤣🤣🤣🤣 with broccoli and sliced potatoes (over cooked broccoli and a new potato sliced and pan fied in oil 🤮) The one slice of bread and butter wasn't crusty as stated on the menu and cost £1.95. When we were asked by a member of staff I voiced my concerns and said that I would not be returning, she told me that even though she worked there she wouldn't eat there due to food quality and price. Trust me I won't be going back again. The only thing I would recommend however is the pot of tea, it was excellent and came with a separate pot of boiling water to top up the main pot to avoid it becoming stewed. The member of staff I spoke to about the quality did however take the drinks off the bill and discount it, which was fair, however I really would have preferred better food so I could eat it all and paid full price. 😏😏😏

For £18.50 I got the scrappiest little piece of overcooked fish so it had gone chewy, chips were frozen ones and really dry, peas were dry and crusty in places. A slice of bread and butter which was average and pot of tea was fine. Such a shame that they're right on the foreshore serving such poor quality at such a high price. Staff were fine, no complaints there but a total waste of £18.50!

Looked at the reviews prior to visiting and wasnt expecting greatness but it was last minute. However the food was lovely. No complaints there at all. Curry sauce was delicious, fish was a good size and chips were nice. £1.95 for a slice of bread is a joke though, £1 is fair in restaurant considering you can get a loaf for a £1 nowadays. Food was excellent, service average just very expensive

Came here as was well located. Ordered 2 fish and chips and a kids fish bites, all chips were lovely. However, fish was soaked in oil and soggy. Kids fish bites were also soggy. Had to tell the waitress at the end of our meal, as nobody did a check back with us. Atmosphere from the staff was friendly. Kindly did take the fish off our bill, but was not worth the price for a few drinks and chips and curry sauce.

Having previously visited this Resteraunt and enjoying our meal we were looking forward to the same again however we were very very disappointed, chips were under cooked, fish was overcooked peas were hard and tartar sauce was disgusting, which is unforgivable for a sea food resteraunt in a seaside location, the prices were high which is expected but the food fell well short in our opinion, no lemon slice/wedge either, and margarine on the bread not butter. I paid extra for a large portion and it was exactly the same as the regular meals we ordered , only the plate was bigger. Looks a little grubby inside now compared to our last visit.

Very disappointed with the Golden Grid. Took my daughter there who is home for Christmas from Australia. She fancied fish and chips. It's wasn't great and expensive for what we had. It's a shame as id often wanted to visit as it looked nice from the outside but won't be calling again. The food certainly doesn't look like pictures posted from previous guests . Portion size was a lot smaller and the fish was old and the batter greasy. Steak was poor. Save your money and get some on the front out of paper. They will be fresher and you will save your hard earned 👍🏼

The food was average at best. As for the customer service, there wasn’t any. The waitress did take our order and bring the food to the table but that was it . We felt we were in the way and causing her an issue just being there. Didn’t even give us a hello or any basic conversation. I ordered a chip buttie. I was given bowel of chips and a bread cake and abruptly told to make my own. When we paid there was no hint of a thank you or have you enjoyed your meal. I have to say that on recent visits to Scarborough this seems to be normal in the restaurants and cafe we have visited.

We've been visiting the Golden Grid for years and never had any issues and the food is lovely. Our teatime visit was marred by essentially unlicensed begging: a group of Eastern European 'musicians' came in and, without confirming with staff, proceed to play loud Xmas songs in the foyer and then approach each table with an upturned hat asking for money! The old couple on the table next to us looked really uncomfortable but the 'beggar' stayed there smiling until her husband gestured for his wife to get her purse out and give them change. The young staff on duty were clearly uncomfortable and out of their depth with this and agreed with the comments we made about unlicensed begging when we paid - hopefully they will bring this to the attention of senior management who will put a stop to it.

Food was ok. Price was a little steep. Service was nothing to write home about. BUT what was really annoying, after paying by card and leaving, was being chased down on a busy pavement by a member of staff saying the payment didn't go through - tried again and again, then another card and the another card with the staff member carrying the payment machine saying all declined when none of them should have failed ! Because golden grid has been established for such a long time you'd have thought they would have sorted this problem out but apparently not ! it's not like it would cost them much to get better devices with better reception but no they can't be bothered. SO be prepared to be chased down and embarrassed.

We have been loyal customers of the Golden Grid for years. But unfortunately tonight the service lost our patronage perhaps for good. We have always been impressed with the quality of the food and the level of customer service that this establishment provides. However the service tonight was below parr. I can only classify it as hostile, rude and apathetic. Service was slow from the start. With staff seemingly more interested in hanging out in the kitchen than on the floor. When we were finally waited on the staff member was chewing gum as he took the order. A clear sign of his lack of interest. When serving he would lean over a member of our party repeatedly passing drinks to the end of the table out of his reach and practically knocking into her every time. There was a mix up with the order (which happens and isn’t in and on itself a problem), and in fairness I do not believe was wholly the waiters fault, however when discussing it, I was greeted with hostility and eye rolling. After that, other t bringing out the order, we were largely and deliberately ignored. The few tables such as there were remained stacked full of dirty plates while the wait staff again disappeared into the kitchen for long periods of time. We had to ask for our table to be cleared several times, so that we could order desserts. They took a few plates away and then left us waiting for about 15 minutes, still with the remaining dirty plates and cutlery. We asked politely again that the table be cleared and if we could order deserts, upon which one staff member completely ignored us and walked off while the other rudely replied that they were busy. There were only 7 covers in the room. She proceeded to snap at me that she needed to serve the table behind us. I dread to think how they would cope if it was actually busy. At this we decided enough was enough and that it was time to go. We left to pay downstairs. There was no member of staff there either. Had we been more dishonest types we could have easily walked off without paying. Needless to say we paid our bill and left. I have to say we were shocked. I’m not sure if this is how the new owner usually manages his businesses, or if this is the result of untrained and uncaring staff members. But the wait staff in any establishment being the front face of the business embody its values. I echo what I said above, currently the values presented are rude, apathetic and hostile. Which are entirely opposite to the terrific reputation that this establishment has held for countless years. Sadly this debacle has resulted in a loss of our patronage and this disappointed review.

Two out of five oysters were bad. The other three were nice. My tea had a foreign body in it. They took the tea off the bill without me asking. When we told them about the oysters they called the manager. She, without apologising, said the best she can do is take 10% off the bill. I suggested she didn't charge us for bad oysters. I said not to worry it will all go on my YouTube channel (speaker the hat man). Now she shouted at me to be quiet and suddenly found out she can reduce the bill by the price of the two oysters. No apology but fear of social media. Furthermore this is a venue which welcomes dogs yet it purports to be an up market restaurant.

Horrendous! Worst meal ever! Ordered moules mariniere as a starter and it was rancid, the smell was clearly off and it should never have been served (it was the sauce not the mussels). They took it off the bill admittedly. Followed by half lobster for mains - it was like rubber, could barely get it out of the shell. £22.50 for a tiny claw and without exaggerating - about 2” of edible lobster and all it came with was chips, a bit of limp rocket and a slice of lemon. Absolute ripoff! We are locals not tourists and I will never set foot in there again! Feel sad that all the tourists think this is all Scarborough has to offer!

But from where I was sitting you could see the staff working from the reflection in large mirror on the wall. I watched the waitress with long red hair in one of the large mirrors. The Golden Grid looks like a charmingly authentic harbour front fish and chips shop. On further experience it becomes more faded, jaded and old fashioned. Portion size was decent enough. The fish batter was light and bubbly, the fish was flaky. The fish pie was superheated and largely lacking in... fish. Surrounded by a moat of overcooked peas that reminded me of my grandmother's cooking. She hated peas and made them suffer for at least an hour on the hob ;-) The mushy peas were worse. Overcooked, brown in places and not at all to my taste. Service: someone took our order and money, that was about it. I cannot recommend this place apart from the tea. I enjoyed the tea.

Iv reviewed hundreds of places over the years and I rarely leave a bad review as most establishments try to rectify a problem where possible… but this place is absolutely TERRIBLE! Overpriced for a start but I accepted that I was on the seafront on a busy summers day. Iv been in cleaner establishments but again I appreciate that they were busy. The food when it came didn’t look great but I gave it a try. £17.95 for medium ( more like small) fish and chips with mushy peas and a pot of tea. The chips were mostly black and part of the fish inedible as it was burnt. The peas were hard and the tea only appeared after I waved down the waitress to remind her. When I told her how bad the food was she said because I had ate some there was nothing she could do except reduce the bill by 10%.. dreadful customer service and awful, tasteless, overpriced food. Dessert was disappointing, apple crumble was not crumbly, had a weird spongy top. I asked for ice cream INSTEAD of custard and got charged an additional £1.50 for the privilege. When we arrived, we were ushered upstairs but then told not to sit next to the window as we were not a party of six. Less than ten minutes later another party of 3 arrived and sat by the window and the waitress said nothing. Double standards. Didn’t think the food really represented value for money. The sticky toffee pudding was a shop bought processed imitation that had very little flavour. Avoid desserts they really were not great.

GG was recommended by the staff of the castle and we don't regret choosing this as our lunch destination from a million chip shops in a sea-side city on a stormy day! Fresh food, the restaurant takes advantage of being located by the harbour. We were pre-settled to taste their fish 'n chips and totally missed the fish cake and lobster dishes. However, the batter fried calamari was brilliant as well. The chips felt a bit soggy and burnt, but hey it's ok. The medium fish we ordered was quite large in reality! Haddocks/cods are accompanied by green peas/mushy peas/beans/gravy/curry sauce. Salt and pepper pots need to be cleaned as they remained clogged. You won't find the tarter sauce on the menu, but yes, they will come upon request. The ambience will make you time travel to a '90s vintage busy eatery with all the wooden furniture and paintings. The service won't let you occupy a preferable sea-view window table if you are not more than four persons. The service was pleasant though. We stayed here for about a couple of hours, spent a brilliant family time as other families with kids and friends were around as well. Should have taken a lobster damn it. I wonder if they had soup of the day.

Visited this evening. The food was poor. Lobster was rubbery and chewy the sausages were dried up and the chips were lukewarm and soggy. The service was so slow we gave up waiting for dessert. The kitchen staff were clearly too busy watching the football and the noise and foul language coming from the kitchen was frightening our children. Maybe you would be better closing your business when the football is on instead of taking money under false pretences.

We ordered the half a garlic lobster and chowder with a sharing starter platter, they did bring everything out together not staggered as starters and mains but I honestly didn't mind this. Everything was cooked perfectly loved the flavours of the chowder and lobster. I would say the layers of lettuce under the whitebait, scampi and calamari starter was a little unnecessary as it was accompanied with a salad. Great establishment enjoyed the aesthetic (even if a little dated really added to the charm I love the Fish painting). Big fan that the menu and prices are available online so I could see what they offered, would definitely go again.

Fish and chips were top quality. Exactly what you expect from a seaside restaurant. Lobster was available also.

Lovely fresh fish and chips on the shore at Scarborough but the dining experience itself was disappointing. One member of the serving staff was engaged and attentive with customers but the others were barely present and didn't make any effort at all. Even on paying there were no pleasantries. Won't be rushing back!

Very nice Haddock here, the batter was thin and crispy and the fish succulent and not over cooked.

Cod had skin on , crab salad very poor. No toilets downstairs (including disabled) had to go across the road to public toilets. Staff very friendly. Not good value for the money. Would not go again

Food was pretty average, the price less so, quite expensive for what you get and the quality. Chips were akin to takeaway, and rest of food was okay. Servers/staff pleasant enough!

Dirty cutlery and crockery. Carpet caked in old chips. Expensive for what you get. Wouldn't return.

Given the food a four star rating as I’m sure it was nice…the menus looked night anyway! However myself as a party of 12 turned up on Saturday and asked if there was space for us to eat. Obviously being a large party we would more than understood if there wasn’t enough room for us. However we was told yes come in and shown to different tables. Which was more than okay as again we understand we was a large table. We all looked at the menus that were handed to us and settled on fish finger sandwiches with chips and large lemonades…. To be told we weren’t spending enough money on what we had ordered and wasn’t welcome…..we would only be served if we ordered more expensive items from the menu! The price was never the issue it was the amount of food that we would have been served and non of us on a day out at the seaside wanted plate fulls of food as a lunch! We quickly left and went to McDonald’s. (lol) obviously 12 people eating and drinking wasn’t enough money for this establishment!!

We ordered 2 all day breakfasts which we didnt think much of,there was half a plate of beans tipped over the one sausage and 2 slices of bacon and a small egg with a goey hash brown, the fried bread was just bread that had been dipped in fat, sausage and blackpudding was ok but everything else was disapointing especially when it cost £35 for 2 breakfasts a cup of tea and a latte

AVOID AVOID. Batter was hard, could tell the oil has never been changed and the staff clearly don’t know how to cut. The screens were off so no menus should of warned us.

Called into the Station for a couple of drinks in the large beer garden, it’s all been done up since the last time we were there. There’s plenty of tables and chairs for eating outside or just enjoying the great beers, it’s very nice and always a friendly atmosphere. Cheers

Wanted something light for last night's food after a lot of heavy carbs meals recently. We both had salad, tuna, and ham, tuna salad had a separate portion of mayo, which we had to mix in ourselves, lots of fresh salad ingredients, and new potatoes. Ham salad had tasty ham, a separate portion of Branston pickle, both had separate pots of salad dressing, which is a great idea because not everyone likes salad dressing and wholemeal bread, butter was a bit hard so difficult to spread, but still lovely, dog friendly pub, very helpful staff, great pint of Theakstons Best bitter, and good range of flavoured gins.

I have been to this pub twice. The first time I had a discount voucher from their website for 30% off food between 12-3pm w on a week day, when we arrived at 12:30pm we were told the kitchen didn't open until 2pm. The second time, 11/04/25, according to website pub opening time for a Friday is 12pm, we sat outside from 11:45 to 12:15pm and pub didn't open. There was eight other people waiting for pub to open at 12pm.

Family Sunday lunch and it was very very average, we were sat upstairs, alone and told immediately when we had to vacate the table even though we had pre booked. The down stairs area did seem to have a nicer atmosphere. The staff were abrupt and disinterested and the food was ‘ok’. The roast beef was like stewing beef and the vegetables were over done. Very over priced for the experience.
