Never tasted fish like it awful chips chewy and hard gravy was more like wall paper paste staff wondering around on phones when you could clearly see things needed cleaning

Really tasteless food watered down vinegar staff were rude taking the mickey out of customer with a disability was glad when the seagull knocked it out of my hands never again went to the lifeboat chippy the food was excellent and young staff were so polite

Eat a lot of fish and chips in a lot of different place and this is one of the best i've had around the UK

Was hoping to eat in the restaurant but they only had the takeaway bit open with the downstairs area open with tables. The fish and chips was mediocre, was expecting a bit more from a seaside chippy, but the chips were more on the chewy side and the curry was dark but more fruity than anything. Too sweet for chip shop curry. The fish was ok, the batter light and crispy but that’s all that was going for it. They had no ‘control’ of the tables, so it was a bit of a free for all with people and their dogs on the inside and out… some with larger dogs intimidating others and barking non-stop in the INDOOR part of the seating.

An hour before closing Friday bank holiday only leftovers cooked to death

Best fish and chips with curry sauce. Sauce is a little spicy compared to usual but that’s what makes it the best. Service is usually pretty quick as it’s made to order.

We usually head straight for Papas Fish & Chips, in Cleethorpes, Whitby & Blackpool they are first class. Scarborough food satisfactory, however facilities are absolutely filthy, lots of flies buy a zapper and clean up.

I recently visited this fish and chip restaurant, and it was a complete disaster. The first thing that hit me when I walked in was how dirty the place was. The floors were sticky, and the tables looked like they hadn't been wiped down in ages. To make matters worse, there was no place to wash your hands before eating. How can you run a food establishment without basic hygiene facilities? The final straw was finding a hair in my dish. It's disgusting and completely unacceptable. Needless to say, I won’t be coming back, and I strongly advise others to steer clear of this place.

I don't actually know where you can go wrong with chips but these were singularly the worst chips I've ever had. expensive, greasy, tasteless, under cooked and ended up in the bin.had to wait ages too. I won't go back.

What a letdown, this is suppose to be the best fish & chip shop in Scarborough. Long queues waiting for food after paying. Haddock was overcooked & tasteless, chips were made greasy by the greasy soggy batter on top. Gave me a bad stomach afterwards, due too it being so greasy. Staff didn't seem to be very organised!! Oh and the worst part cheap & nasty sauce sachets

The staff need to learn customer service. Had a young guy stare me out tonight twice because I dared ask him to pack my food for takeaway, I even apologised each time he stared at me.. like I'd spat in his face or something. A family member crunched into something stone-like that sounded as though it broke a tooth when it was supposed to be a chip.

Not sure I'll be back here in hurry. Me and my family have used this fish shop for years however I'm not sure what's happened but new owners, workers and quality of food has become poor. We had hard bread cakes that wasn't in a wrapper and clearly had been sat out to be that hard. Nearly everyone's Chips had a hard bit in like raw potatoes or a black bit. The workers are slack and dont come across as though they actually know anything. However I do still rate the curry sauce and my son enjoyed the chicken nuggets.

Confusing ordering system - two queues. Chips were tasteless despite putting loads of vinegar on. Also got two green chips. Mushy peas were absolutely nuclear and burned the top of my mouth. Battered halloumi was nice

Awful food. Got the small Papa combo and the fish cake wasn’t even cooked properly. I asked for breaded fish and got told when I picked it up they don’t do it and apparently thought I meant the fish cake. I ‘had’ to choose a sauce so went for gravy and you can tell it was that disgusting powdered stuff. Go somewhere else to eat

Very Poor service by staff, relied on computerized screen to take orders. Food order arrived incomplete, staff unfazed and lacking enthusiasm to correct it. Seating area very dirty, with staff member smoking where customers are eating. Fish was good, chips very poor. Will not return, and has tarnished the Papas name for us.

Visited 10th july . 5pm barrier accross so had to eat outside .i mentioned to the forl serving aboutt the gull mess on tables she spoke to a man cooking who just shrugged his shoulders .ordered papas combos but they forgot to put fishcakes in . Some chips raw some overcooked .my sons curry sauce looked like it had been scraped of the pan .we spoke to a family who were disgusted with there meals and the gulls swooping down near them and there children .they were on holiday from scotland and i felt bad for there experience .we left most of the food as did they .the staff refused to open the barrier to us and the other customers .absolutly disgusting . Prices are good food is disgusting . AVOID !

Chips are rubbish and dry. Also messing everyones orders up by serving other customers after you was served and then they was putting their tickets above my ticket which lead to them getting their food before me. Utter Shambles wont be returning. Other peoples reviews check out. Definately not the best!

Worst service and worst chips EVER !

Worst Papa's experience ever. Normally, we have a brilliant time in Papa's- that's Whitby and Hull. Found ourselves in Scarborough very hungry. Were delighted to see Papa's and got in line. Waited over 20 minutes once our order was placed. 5 groups got served before us even though we had ordered before them. Classic young, inexperienced, indifferent staff. Had to remind them twice what we had ordered. Had to ask them to clean the table. Watched other people cleaning their own tables !!! Food was over cooked and dried out. Really questioning if this was a genuine Papa's ??? I will be making a formal complaint to their head office.

Very disappointed ☹️ ordered small fish and chips which cost over £7.50 which isn't too bad for the portion size however that's the only positive I can say unfortunately. Papa's in 'ull (Hull) used to be fantastic (although not been for years) All I can say it is run by teenagers who either don't know what they are doing or simply just don't care...the fish was weird tasting and greecy, chips were ok but really disappointed. Staff serving were ok if a little disinterested but that's usual Scarborough customer service 🤣

Best fish and chips? Who are you kidding really? Average at best. Seating area pretty outdated and awful. Service was fine but seems to be run by school dropouts.

Had been looking forward to Fish and Chips from Papas since our last visit. Unfortunately we were really let down by the quality of the chips. Pretty much every one had a large black bit of potato in it, and they tasted bitter. Will be heading elsewhere from now on.

Poor service young guy was dismissive and acted like he didn't want to be there, chips was awful dry over cooked gravy and curry had a strange tang best thing was the fish decent size cooked well and nice batter but wouldn't eat here again.

Dark haired girl and lad behind count where absolutely horrible people rude obnoxious saw her roll her eyes at someone because she asked if she could have a drink aswel her meal. Absolutely discraceful disrespectful will never be going back owner wants to sort it out before someone ends up kicking off

Papas used to be the place to go for the best fish & chips, especially their gluten free options. However they have not offered any GF options for over 6 months. Customer service was poor and this was the burnt offerings which I fed to the seagulls. Will not return.

Well we went here as it said on Google maps they do gluten free food. We get there and there's a sign on there menu board saying GF food available but may take longer Happy days we thought but we were wrong as after standing in a queue for a while we ask if we could get some gluten free fish and chips only to be told "we don't do it but go down to the blue building to your right as they do it there" great thanks for information but you shouldn't say you do gluten-free food if you don't.

I do like the fish here but the chips are quite poor, lots of small overdone ones, overall they just feel a bit stale. Also came as gluten free is advertised on the website and it's mentioned on the menu only to be told after queuing for ages that they 'stopped doing it'. Well sort your website out papas or get this branch in line with the others. They did point us to one down the road where we could get GF at least.

The young staff were polite and friendly. My small fish was dry, over half of the shape was batter that was overdone. My partner with a standard serving said that his batter was underdone. The chips were dry and tasteless. And that cost almost £18. The best thing that the place has going is the location, and the polite young staff

I would not recommend this place it was awful. I ordered 2 battered sausages and chips and one fish and chips. I waited for around 15 minutes. When I finally got my food the sausages were under cooked and the fish was stone cold. Throughout waiting for my food the staff we’re arguing about their daily rota and swearing there’s a time and a place. I took my fish back and asked for my money back because the fish was cold. A staff member argued with me that it had just been cooked so it wasn’t cold but it had been sat in the warming cabinet. I got my money back but with no apology.

As someone who has eaten Pattie and Chips for over 65 years, I can honestly say that the pattie and chips I purchased today at 14.12pm was the worst I have ever eaten in my life. The pattie was tiny, tasty dry and old, the chips were burnt. I would not recommend this chip shop to anyone (it made me physically sick)

Whoever painted the sign saying Britain's Best Fish and Chips, obviously can't spell worst. Web site advises gluten free but they have stopped!! I actually rang four times yesterday to check and nobody answered. A girl behind the couner simply said "phone not working!" Not sure that some outdoor benches and a couple of booths in an adjacent area qualifies as a dine in restaurant!! Obviously couldn't have any food as no gf, but probably a good thing as those somre people were taking away in trays did not look particularly brilliant. Managed to find a proper dine in restaurant in town with great GF fish and chips, a very clean and nicely furnished place with excellent service.

We had seen reviews of Papa’s and decided to try it for our evening meal. Due to the summer season not having started (we assume) the restaurant section wasn’t open, there were however 4-5 booths next to the takeaway bit where we could sit to eat. I believe there’s something about fish and chips out of paper (or in the case a cardboard box) that makes them taste better. And these were some of the best I’ve ever had: the chips had a lovely sweetness from being cooked well, and the fish… well! The batter was nice and thin and very crunchy, the fish inside so fresh and cooked to perfection, and the mushy peas were thick and tasty. The portion sizes were enormous, at home this size of fish would have been deemed a “special” - photo includes a can of pop for scale. And my Papa’s Classic (medium fish and chips plus one side) a steal at £9.49.

Was looking for a good fish and chips while in Scarborough and saw that Papas was noted as one of the 10 best on a review website so thought we’d try it out. Well Papas didn’t disappoint. The food was great and very reasonably priced for sea side fish and chips. The papas classic was good value for money with a side included. No frills but with fish and chips as good as this, fresh and well cooked, you can’t go wrong.

It was the best fish and chips that I have ever wow we always eat at Papa's great value and in line if not a bit cheaper than other fish shops along the seafront

Regular visit Scarborough and papas fish shop , fish shop very hit and miss, sometimes they are great but other times very poor , tables always dirty, staff are lovely, but need to brush up on Hygiene

Although fast service the chip butty left a lot to be desired. Had three chips then threw it away. Dry bread cake, chips that seemed to have been overcooked/left in the fryer. Very unappetising.

Had 2 chip butties and 2 drinks. Prices on par with most chip shops on the sea front. Food was ok, but towards the end of the portion of chips, they were a bit hard and some were scrappy. Staff could do with wiping tables more often.

This Place shoud not have Papas name Above the door the two cans of diet pepsi we got were out of date Nov 23 The chips were black ( not burnt with frying) but the potatoes were discoloured the whole place looked dirty and gruby Got a refund for things we got as they was not fit to eat. A refund is not the answer we expect more from the papas name.

Fish cake included with the fish and chips, pot of hot mushy peas. The fish had a little too much oil but was enjoyable.

Chips were not hot and there wasn’t enough outside seats. I had a chip butty there was lots of chips though so that’s a plus.

Great food, lovely service. The staff got the food out extremely fast. Great options for all eaters. Me and my family loved the fact they cook in veg oil (would recommend). We went to many places on the seafront, many of which cooked with beef dripping!!

Had fish chips peas and curry sauce, good size portion , quick service, friendly staff - Sue &Crew , the young boy was especially polite, would definitely go again

Come here most weeks for fish and chips to take home. papas is one of very few chippies that cooks in veg oil rather than dripping, so as a vegetarian family it's a pain, but happy to use it anyway, decent size portions too.

Fish & chips tasted of very old oil not nice at all. Shall not be returning. Don’t waste your money!

Absolutely filthy service desk, very slow and poor service, placed my change on the desk top and didn’t even hand it to me. The chips were dry and the fish was very poor considering the price they are charging. I would stay well clear of this place, they don’t really care what is being fed to their customers, no quality control whatsoever. Awful place

Stopped doing gluten free all together

Good value, fish, chips, sausage n carton of curry sauce for less than £8 just enough to fill up on.

Visited this evening for takeaway food for 4 including a gluten free meal. There wasn't any gluten free food available and apparently there were only 2 portions of chips and they weren't willing to fry anymore or any fish. Staff were rude and too busy gossiping to get on with their jobs. Opening times stated open till 10pm but I visited at about 7.20pm and they were clearly trying to close. Overall very disappointed with the Scarborough branch, they reflect very badly on the Papa's brand.

Unable to eat here as No Gluten free available. Seems this is a regular occurrence. If Pappas wants to support and claim gluten Free meals do it, don't just make the claim.

Absolutely great fish and chips. Excellent value for money. Throughly enjoyed them as did the rest of the family. Highly recommended.

Man, this was sooooooo good. Curry sauce - yum Gravy - yum Chips - hot and fresh Fish - fried fresh was delicious!! Mushy peas - yum Fish cake - good Really reasonably priced too. Would definitely recommend. We had small fish, it was big enough for all the adults. They have a small seating inside, and some outside seating too.

Been before and the food was nice but this time the chips looked like they had been reheated a hundred times, the fish was soggy and just tasted of water. The eat in area was messy and the tables were full of rubbish.

I'm a local and live 5 minutes away. I was hungry in the week on a walk and didn't fancy cooking at home so got Papas combo. It came to £6.30p. I gave 2 £5 notes. The woman serving me gave me £3.70p in several denominations so my pockets on my designer jeans were now weighing down with change. She then made a comment about how I'd took all her change without considering the inconvenience she'd just caused me! That got me thinking, 1. It's not my business to tell her how to run her business. 2. If selling something between £5-£10 then recieving £10 shouldn't be an alien concept. 3. Get a small float of pound coins. Doesn't take an A+ in business studies does it?

Sue and Lizzie served us last week and I can honestly say they were the best shop bought chips I've had in a long time, Not greasy at all , hot and full of flavour......and plenty of them ! I cant understand anyone saving the portions are small...they are not. You can choose different portions sizes if you want but there is always plenty of them. I'm coeliac and I was hoping that I would be able to get a gluten free batter , alas the dedicated fryer is broken and as they are not cheap it will be next year before a new one is ordered . This was very politely explained to me with numerous apologies......regardless of that the chips were 10/10 and its well worth a visit if you are taking in the Scarbados sea front. Part of Wakefield Council's Happy Healthy Holiday's - Families were taken to Scarborough for the day! Papa's Fish & Chips did themselves proud in organising & accepting over 150 vouchers for families on the day! The Fish & Chip's were lovely & the halal option...

Meant to be the best chippy in Britain.... I wouldn't go far as that. Batter was lovely and fish was ok. The chips were very bland no flavour to them will not be back in a hurry.

Great fishcake and chips. Curry sauce lovely and great consistency. Staff friendly and honest about portion size. Shame they didn't do large portions of chips as we hadn't eaten all day and just finished swimming. Chips all nice, no dodgey ones, crispy and fresh. Fishcake very slim, but tasty. Here is some feedback- - need to have adequate chip shop forks, you cannot eat appropriately with the current ones especially fish - didn’t have prices of gravy and peas on the menu, so people order without knowing price - for £4.00 and a -£13 take out for large the price vs how good the chips were I feel wasn’t adequate for the best around, fish was ok but was expecting much much more

Terrible. I could leave it at that and tbh i wasnt even going to bother reviewing however it actually spoiled my day!! 5 of us, £42 plus spent. None of us ate more than half!!! It really was that bad. In fact as i ate the meal i felt guilty that fish had died for that meal, what a waste!! Ive never thought that before!!!!
