Rarely feel compelled to write a review, but loved my meal here. Seafood platter to share gorgeous, steak salad lovely and chocolate trio amazing. Seems a small thing, but chips were properly homemade too. Service ace. Only £4 for Butty Bach. My new fave place to eat.

We stayed the night so we had dinner and breakfast at The Wild Hare and both experiences we're faultless. Dinner menu was great, plenty of choice, very tasty and good portions. My husband had the Hare burger and i had the salmon so tasty.Starters and desert were also good. We thought the food was very reasonably priced compared to our Pembrokeshire prices. Breakfast again was excellent with a very good choice and good quality. Staff were excellent, very attentive and always a smile. Thanks for a great stay - we will be back

Now known as The Wild Hare, this was a great Sunday lunch after a walk around Tintern. We washed off our very muddy dog outside the pub before going in. Lovely setting and atmosphere. Lots of gluten free options including starters and desserts. The hearty Sunday roast portions were appreciated. We had 1 gluten free fish and chips, tasted nice but have had better versions elsewhere and it let down the lunch experience a little. Would definitely return!

The setting is great, the ambience good too. The service was really poor and I felt for some of the young servers, they just looked lost. One table had the wrong food, we had cold food delivered. Tried talking to the head of service after a 2nd failed attempt to bring us hot food (that wasn't), but a bizarre (and somewhat irrational response)! All-in-all, as much as I'd like to see the place on a good day, I won't be jumping to go back. They just didn't have a good day at the office and didn't know what to do if any issues. Can't say whether chef having a bad day, service team having a bad day, or all of the above. Wasn't even saved by the food on our visit. Never been before, plenty of other places in the area to try!

Booked a table for 4. Good, busy atmosphere inside. Food really fresh, nicely cooked and well presented, and really friendly, efficient service (contrary to some of the reviews on here). Battered fish and steak were excellent. Good range of local beers and ales. Slightly higher prices than some other pubs nearby but don't mind paying a bit more for quality. We visited here for a drink in the afternoon with a view to booking a table for a meal the following evening. Upon entering the place the staff were all stood together and it was all very disorganized and quite uncomfortable for us. Anyway we asked if we could have a table for a drink and we were quite abruptly told yes but only in the garden, not inside even though all the tables were unoccupied. I then asked about availability for a table the following evening and again in an abrupt manner we were told no, without even asking a time or checking the latest availability. We felt as though we weren't welcome and left without having a drink. I checked on the online booking system and tables were available at 17.45 which would have been perfect for us. Terrible experience with awful staff This is now the Wild Hare Hotel.

Very poor experience all round. My friend arrived 10 minutes ahead of me and was told he wouldn't be served a drink until I arrived, so he was left sitting at a table absolutely fuming! Some bizarre rule about not serving men on their own, at least that's what he was told. When it came to ordering our 2nd round of drinks it took a good 20 to 25 minutes to get served. We had the distinct impression we were being ignored rather than overlooked. Will not be visiting this establishment again.

We deliberately chose this hotel as an after Christmas break, somewhere to relax and recover, especially as we had visited before and had enjoyed a lovely couple of days. Unfortunately in between our two stays there has been a considerable refurbishment, ripping out the comfortable, albiet a little tired, seating and replacing with wooden chairs and tables all set for dining. When we arrived the three small sofas which were poked into the corner one by the fire and the others by the window were occupied meaning we had to perch on the wooden chairs at the fully laid tables just to enjoy a drink. Previously this had been the lounge with plenty of seating and the restaurant was situated where the now Private Dining room is, the door of which was permanently closed during our stay. This area also used to be the breakfast room which is now situated in a cavernous room at the back of the hotel, completely characterless where strangely another couple of sofas were situated in the middle of the breakfast tables? I would have thought the private dining could have been in here and return breakfast to the original restaurant. The bedrooms, as before, were very comfortable and well equipped, although this time I had booked the superior room with a balcony which, unfortunately, was accessed by some very large steep steps causing me extreme discomfort as I do suffer some mobility issues. The room can be accessed by the side road where there is an unlit parking area and a muddy path through the garden. This walk is obviously uncovered, so on the second day I got very wet walking up the hill and didn't return for the evening meal fearing a second soaking. Again the food has changed to pub fare, chips with most things and an uninspiring menu. I fear this hotel is now aimed at the young, not us old fogies although the few pub visitors who dropped in for a meal seemed to be our age. We were the only guests. I don't want to be completely negative as the staff were unfailingly helpful and cheerful and the rooms are good value and beautifully appointed, although the lovely shower could have done with either a small handrail or non-slip mat. Unfortunately we will not be returning as the old Royal George almost used to welcome visitors with a cosy embrace where the Wild Hare is more drink up, eat up and go. Very sad.

My husband and I had high hopes for this restaurant with the reviews, we booked for our anniversary dinner. On entering we were greeted and seated quickly. Our two dogs were also welcomed. I over heard a conversation with the manager and the table next to us saying the steak wasn’t very good. We ordered drinks which came promptly and then our food order taken. The soup starter was bland and needed a lot of seasoning to make it taste like anything but hot water. Our wine arrived and was placed in the cooler without the server saying anything. Not poured, opened or even told it was there! Not offered water for the table but the water glasses remained. Our first drink glasses stayed on the table the entire time we were there. The table next to us was also not cleared. The mains arrived. My fish was very under cooked. We made the manager aware and they took it away to be changed. My husbands burger was fine but not as tasty as you’d expect. Once he’d finished my fish arrived. The batter was burnt and the fish was again under cooked. The chips were raw inside and burnt on the out. The best part of my meal was the tartare sauce! The manager asked how it was this time round I explained it was not cooked properly and the batter was over done. Nothing was done about this. I picked around the bits that I could and left most of the meal. We requested the bill which was promptly given to us. The manager had taken half the price of my meal off the bill. not good enough. We finished our drinks and left. Sadly very disappointed with the meal and response from the team. I would not recommend at all.

Having ordered our meal we waited in anticipation We asked if the Rump Steak was good and got the response "well its Rump Steak" One of us ordered the Lamb, which on arrival was very under-cooked, with lots of fat and blood. We stayed two nights at the Royal George whilst walking a stretch of Offa's Dyke. Not only is the restaurant superb, with the added benefit of an outdoor wood-fired Pizza Oven, but the accommodation is absolutely excellent. It's not a bit like most pubs. Forget about cramped, old wood-beamed rooms with a bathroom down the corridor - the rooms are arranged along a wood-framed arcade running around the beautiful garden. They are very generously sized, with cool, modern en-suite bathrooms. The attention to detail is also pretty special. There are tea and coffee making facilities in each room, but instead of those horrid little plastic sachets of UHT milk, they leave a little glass bottle of fresh local milk outside your door every morning!

Given its location right across the road from Tintern Abbey and on a major hiking route, this restaurant would be forgiven for falling into stereotypical over-priced tourist food and sloppiness of execution. Quite the contrary. The menu is thoughtful and wide-ranging (the “smaller portions” mini-menu was perfect for my elderly father-in-law), and there are some terrific vegetarian options. My bbq pulled jackfruit burger was the most interesting vegetarian burger that I’ve had anywhere. And given the volume of people who were coming and going, particularly in the beer garden, the staff managed to hold it together really well. I would gladly come back.

Lovely people run this hotel, the service and welcome are good. The seating is uncomfortable and the setting lovely. The big problem is the food. Arranging food on slates, serving pate in jars, and serving up pearls of flavour is not enough to make the cooking good. We have eaten here 4 times, and it isn't getting better. Steak used to be a stand-by, but is no longer offered for lunch. The chips used to be good, but now lack crispness. The tempura of vegetables used to be enjoyable but is now dull. The prices are not cheap, and better value can be found in monmouthshire, but what I would really like is for this kitchen to excel. It has a long way to go.

My partner & I stayed in Brockweir last weekend & stumbled upon The Wild Hare (Royal George Hotel) when looking for somewhere to eat on Saturday Night, beautifully decorated & warm welcome from all the staff not just for us but for our dogs too- we found a table & ordered 2 steaks which were cooked perfectly & timely served, the dogs had cows ears off the doggy menu- great idea to keep them occupied whilst we ate. We visited again on the Sunday lunch whilst on a circle walk that the landlord had told us about on the Saturday night- even lent us a head torch for our walk back to our accommodation as it was getting dark which we returned on Monday, we had lunch which was great ( 2 burgers); overall I’m really impressed with the wild hare & wouldn’t hesitate in returning- thanks guys & well done! Im sure we’ll see you again in the summer!!

I agree with one of the other reviews... What happened?? We last visited in the summer and had a wonderful lunch.. Re-visited on Saturday, it was grim, from the underwhelming welcome, even got told off for calling lunch, dinner... The place was freezing. We sat with our coats on through out our time there... Food is expensive and shockingly poor... I had a tasteless grisle filled burger that came with six chips, £13.95... not worth it .. the steak sandwich is nothing more than an over rated beef sandwich. Gutted as we had high hopes this would be our regular.. We will go back to the Anchor.

We have been visiting our relations in Hereford at least twice a year for nearly 40 years. Each time we did we stopped for lunch at the Royal George. It was like stepping back in time in the nicest way. Comfy settees and excellent food it was something to look forward to on a long journey. It never disappointed. This year we stopped for lunch as usual but what a difference. Gone is the old world charm, gone are the comfy settees. Instead tables and chairs fill the area and the whole decor has changed including the atmosphere which has gone for good. It is now just another 'modernised' pub. The food took so long to arrive that we actually considered cancelling and just going on our way but we were hungry so waited. When it did arrive it was tasteless. Why anyone would put sweet potatoes, mash and roast potatoes on one plate is beyond me! The lemon sauce was devoid of any lemon flavour too although the other vegetables were cooked well and still had bite. We had planned to stop in the hotel for a night or two as it was such a special place in such a beautiful area but we won't stop here again even to eat.

This was booked on our behalf by friends so we had no idea what to expect. Well, all I can say is that we were absolutely delighted with everything about the place! Our room was well furnished and very comfortable. The bar has an amazing atmosphere and the New Year function was fantastic. Great food, amazing service and a super way to see in the New Year. Olivia, was super attentive and made sure everything was just as we wanted. Congratulations to the hosts it was a memorable night. We will definitely be visiting during the year to take advantage of all the opportunities locally and to enjoy first class hospitality again!

This was ment to be an enjoyable evening meal. The restaurant was freezing cold we had to eat with our coats on. The food took so long to arrive at the table, in fact we were so cold that we were thinking of asking for the bill not long after we finished our starters, we were not the only people in the restaurant to be cold other people were asking to move tables as they were cold. Will try other restaurants in the area.

We were visiting Tintern primarily to visit the ruined abbey which was dissolved under the instructions of Henry VIII. This is worth a visit in itself but when it is also combined with a singposted walk, (1.75 miles x 2) up to the Devil's Pulpit, and a magnificent Sunday roast, it makes a lovely sunny winter's day.

Attracted by the lovely exterior lit up for Christmas, we intended to have a quick drink before dining at home but once inside we were charmed by the cozy interior, blazing fire and warm welcome from the staff and quickly decided to stay and sample the food. There was a good menu choice and Nicky was knowledgeable about the food and confidently able to identify gluten free choices. The food was beautifully presented, perfectly cooked and tasted delicious, The chef is obviously proud of his art, from triple cooked chips, succulent fish, seared lettuce through to tiny spheres of lemon that burst in the mouth every mouthful was a treat to the tastebuds.

So glad we booked, very busy Sunday lunchtime. Arrived early and enjoyed a couple of gin and tonics at the bar. Great selection of gins. Restaurant is really cosy and good atmostphere. Glad we skipped starters and went for desserts. Main course was fantastic ....roast beef and gravy was so delicious. Yorkshire puddings fab. All the veg were good too. Cauliflower cheese was well worth paying the extra. Followed by the most wonderful chocolate desserts. Great wine list too. Staff were very friendly and service was excellent .So glad we found this restaurant. Can't wait to go back and try an evening meal. Well worth the trip to Tintern. Hopefully be back very soon

Me and my partner decided to try Sunday lunch. We have booked for half 2 we were the only table there and a bigger table of 8. So I expect to wait a bit longer for our food. Although waitress took a wile to come over and take our order. I have ordered belly pork meat was cooked lovely but i couldnt enjoy it after i have seen 2 cm long pigs hair on the crackling. I have mentioned it to the waitress i said that I understand maybe chef wanted dish to look rustic but pigs hair was a bit too much! She replied that its the method of cooking and its just like that. Maybe if I wasnt a chef my self i would of believed. Our main courses took forever to come of as big table got their food first even tho we have finished our starters before them. We ordered pork and beef and side of cauliflower cheese and mash potato ( as waitress didnt let us know it was coming with it anyway and it did not say on the menu either it was lumpy too )parsnips meant to be smoked i dont know what they did to them but they tasted and looked like someone has left them in the oven and forgot about them. I guess it was our fault for booking so late as it seemed like we got left overs of the roast looking at the potatoes and veg. At least meat was cooked amazing. Place looked fantastic. And portions were big but i do think chef is trying maybe it would be better to master basics first.

Following our walk we took our owners for lunch in The Wild Hare. Enticing menu - they ordered starters to share before having the main course. Then they did the same with the desserts!! They all enjoyed the food and service so much that we will be coming back as we only live 3 miles away. Us dogs were made to feel welcome too. My owner will be recommending the restaurant to our B&B; guests.

Pre-booked our table. Had to clear our own dinner plates on to another table as waited so long. Then had to go and ask barman for sweet menu, Gave up in the end as no-one came to take our order. Funny though as soon as we asked for bill that came within seconds. Absolutely awful place food cold.

It was also The main course was severely over salted - and there were too many conflicting strong flavours on the plate. We all 6 of us had a below average meal for an above average price. Ordered a vegetable lasagne and a vegan lasagne , they came out looking and tasting exactly the same . When staff questioned they said there was no vegan left ,and salad offered. As not strictly vegan decided to continue with the lasagne . Would have thought this would have been deducted from bill , but wasn’t . Also lucky wasn’t dairy intolerant! This mistake needs to be addressed as could have been distressing for a strict vegan !

We spent a night here and were absolutely amazed by the position of the hotel which has recently ( six weeks ago) been taken over by Richard and Harriet who are busily refurbishing the room to a very high standard. It is situated in a most delightful position in Tintern and is very close to the Abbey and , of course all the lovely walks along the Wye Valley.

My partner and I came here to check out the Detroit pizza and cocktails. The service was fast and super friendly, plus they catered for my nut allergy really well. Being dog friendly, we took out 12 yo labrador Alffi who had fun, plus and Utterly Mutterly ice-cream! We had the 1/2 and 1/2 Detroit pizza, a mix of Bloody Mary and the porcini mushrooms. It was DELISH, the portion was also massive meaning we took half home for tea, making it 2 meals in 1. My partner had the Detroit IPA which was hoppy and fresh. I had the Shepherd and Welsh Wanderer cocktails. Very strong, delicious and well presented. We have friends that live locally and will absolutely be back to check out the Sunday slices, bring our dogs and have some more pizza and cocktails. Thanks Lee & co for fab hospitality.
