Top price £14 for a battered gold fish and 6 chips , rubbish food, very poor service.Never never never again, central London or Paris prices for a cafe in a village in Scotland. I was still hungry coming out and went looking for some proper food after leaving the cafeNot good enough.!!!

Best fish and chips i have had for many a year and served with warmth and a friendly smile. Just the Vital Spark I needed to commence my visit to Inverary.

On a wet day visit to Inveraray Jail just up the street. Dropped in for a coffee and snack. The special was Cullen Skink, a Scottish Haddock based broth, or thick soup, with diced potatoes, onions and cream. It came with bread rolls, in a very big bowl, red hot, and absolutely delicious. The lumps of haddock at the bottom were enormous. A bargain at about £7 or £8. So delicious that I bored my relatives with how good it was. People at the next table ordered it too, and raved as well. The other snacks were fine, but I didn't notice as I was still banging on about the broth....

Visited the café both en route and returning from Crear for our daughter’s wedding. Karl is super friendly & welcoming, in fact all staff were fantastic. The food was delicious too! Will definitely return on next visit!

Ho cenato volendo rischiare una pizza in Scozia. Pizza frutti di mare, molto ben farcita, ma la pasta è quella che mi ha stupito di più, cotta bene, leggermente croccante, sono rimasto positivamente colpito da fare personalmente i complimenti al pizzaiolo. Anche il servizio è stato veloce e simpatico . La musica anni 80 in sottofondo ha reso tutto molto piacevole.Consiglio a tutti di provare per credere

Called in while on a coach tour. Ordered cullen skink (which was lovely) and a roll and sausage and a cappucinno. Roll was dry and sausage was so hard it couldnt be eaten. No coffee. 20 minutes later i asked for my coffee. Waiter looked blank even though he had written it down. 10 minutes later i had to go to the counter and ask about the cappucinno again. They finally brought it by which time i had to leave to get back on the coach.A terrible advert for Scottish tourism.Avoid at all costs!

My wife and I had lunch at the Royal Burgh Cafe on our second day in Scotland having just arrived from New York, USA. Our waiter suggested the Cullen Skink (6.95 GBP); good advice, totally different than anything in the USA and a delicious seafood soup. My wife savored an equally tasty Tuna Mayo Sandwich (4.35 GBP). Note: Waiters are very polite and will not rush patrons; be sure to get their attention when you're ready to order or want your check.

Great coffee rolls a bit dry but great service , open early from 8am and really handy food was great value you will not be dissapointed

We dinned here for lunch, Four of us had Fish and Chips with one soft drink each, and the bill came to nearly £60.00, most expensive Fish and Chips ever, should of got takeaway.!! Mind you the fish and chips were very good.

Royal Burgh Bistro is situated in the main street in the heart of Inveraray.

We called into this cafe on a rainy afternoon and was immediately cheered up by the owner Julie, who could not have been more helpful. I am very strict vegetarian and Julie was honest enough to say that they used beef fat for cooking, however her son made chips and battered mushrooms especially for me with vegetarian oil. Julie offered lots of advice on where to visit in the area and not to get off the point the food was first class. Absolutely delicious. Well done Julie and your son who is the chef,we will be back.

My Cullen skink and my dads were very nice the staff treated my little one like she was a queen good to see personal service was great the waiter even danced with my wee one to stop her escaping

All tours should stop here for lunch. The lunch rush was a tad slow because they got crushed by a bunch of busses; but, my wife and I ensured there was plenty of time to enjoy a sit-down meal at this stop along our tour. You should, too! Here's why:

The staff and food at the Royal Burgh Cafe is excellent you can even phone them up with your order and it will be ready when you get there. The sitting part of the cafe us very good superb choice of food food is always hot and presentation is good as well I would certainly recommend this place to people

Nach dem Frühstück im Hotel ist ein hervorragender doppelter Espresso mit einem individuell gewähltem Scone an einem der kleinen Tische vor dem Lokal der perfekte Abschluss einer Übernachtung in Inveraray. Top freundliches Personal, fallweise längeres que in, liegt aber an den Torusiten, die sich nicht entscheiden wollen, nicht am Personal.

The fish and chips here are absolutely superb, as good as you’ll get anywhere in Scotland, beautiful fresh fish and superb chips. However, my complaint is that in the take-away section, you hardly get the impression that your custom is wanted let alone valued. You get asked what you want, with no welcoming smile or even tone, you place your order and gave an order barked at you that you should stand at the far end of the counter as if you’re some kind of undesirable character. The impression is that in comparison with the customers in the restaurant, you’re an irritation.

This is a seaside type of small bistro / snacks place but it's very good in that category. Not a swish place for dinner but more than adequate for a light lunch or snack. We had filled ciabattas which were just delicious and could see people around us enjoying some nicely cooked food. Spotlessly clean and with friendly service, not at all expensive, it's great. Wine list very, very limited.

A bus load of us arrived on a Sunday evening just as the cafe was about to close. We were from a ramblers club and looking for somewhere for dinner. The cafe very kindly kept their doors open, found us all tables and in the end served around 20 covers. That wasn’t the best part, the food was exceptional as was the service all for a reasonable price.

Family holiday touring Scotland visited Inveraray for the day went visited the jail which we enjoyed! Felt hungry so fancied fish and chips as there is only one chip shop we ended up in the Royal burgh Cafe which is joined to the chip shop next door! The place was queued out the door but we got a table for four within five minutes, service was fast, The menu was full of variety we settled for two haddock specials and pizza margarita we waited around 20 minutes for food place was packed out but food arrived to our satisfaction fish was very tasty golden batter and fresh chips were proper chip shop chips and my mother and father split the homemade pizza and really enjoyed it. Would definitely come back again!

I'm giving a low rating because of Service and prices charged......... I have not really a problem with charges" you make your choice = pay your money"........... This is not the first time I've been to Inverraray nor the Royal Burgh cafe and I'm quite aware of the tourist trap culture...... How ever I may appear to have been unlucky But that's No excuse for what happened........... The Menu was priced as expected "Not entirerly eye watering but stingy none the less But well we're on a short break this is part and parcel.......... Order taken fairly quickly but the fish and chips took a little time longer to arrive than expected to then be told about 5 min and half the order eaten that it was the wrong and dearer fish served ............. "OK but not my problem if you've made a mistake" .......... The place became quite busy during our wait for food and I did notice the two girls feverishly taking orders but Nothing was being served unless you were one of the patrons who were complaining about the delay............ I to had to complain as the drinks ordered took 15 mins to arrive in total......... 5 mins after asking "Wheres my order?" I did notice several patrons getting very upset and some left without having anything delivered........ What was delivered was very acceptable and nicely presented if a little cold with obviously standing for a few minutes....... The two girls as I said worked feverously to get the orders in and were to be comended but were unable to to both orders and deliver ..... Cafe was drasticly under staffed for what was obviously waves of tourist buses coming in and I really don't think it's a Surprise at this time of year............ "Sorry" .........For the charges made for food the service given was very poor ......This is a quick cuppa Snack Cafe thats bordering on mid range prices and took an hour to eat a luke warm fish & chip and a coffee and then to cap it an extra 10-15 mins wait for a Pepsi and had to get pushy to get bill aswell ...... Unless as I say you were obnoxious and then you were served fairly quicKly

A trip to Inveraray Jail followed by lunch at this cafe....which was excellent, fresh food. prompt and attentive service. home made cheese macaroni and home made lasagne. chicken burger also good. very clean place and pram friendly. would recommend. the local Highland beer is also worth a try.

Turistfälla, vi beställde fish and chips. Chipsen hade inte ens varit i närheten av fritösen. Fisken hade för mycket panering. Ingen tartarsås utan du fick klämma ut den ur enportions förpackningar. Maten smakade ingenting.

À part le service qui est correct et le personnel très aimable, il faut fuir l endroit. Le fish and chips est immangeable. Panure épaisse et pas cuite, frites blanches , pas de salade ... Apparement les pizzas seraient mieux mais pas servies en cas de grande affluence. En plus les toilettes sont cracra.

Called in on chance and had a fabulous meal. The size of the fish was more like a saddle, hanging over the plate! Beautifully cooked.

Dropped in for lunch on bus tour there were four of us place was very busy so expected to wait a bit longer but food out within 10 minutes and was delicious I had the Italian lasagna my friends had fish and chips all fresh and tasty. Staff were friendly service was fast and efficient.

Coming home from our family holidays loch awe had previously been in the chip shop and had amazing food so tried cafe out ordered chicken tempura and mozerella sticks as was recommended wasn’t disappointed food was great fresh and homemade as the waitress had advised! Kids had pizza and husband was happy with his macaroni and enjoyed great family run business and helpful staff place is spotless!

Popped in on a cold clustery day for a hot meal. My wife had haddock and chips while I had the scampi. Really large plates, and once you see the size of the fish you understand why! The fish was perfect and went down a treat and the scampi was second to none. We will defo be back next time we’re over the West coast. The service was outstanding and faultless.

We popped in for a warming cup of coffee and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the service and food. Coffee was great and to our liking - nice and strong. We both tried the two types of soup on offer and were very happy and the sandwiches we selected were lovely and freshly made.

We definitely judged a book by its cover when walking in for lunch during our bus tour. I was expecting something decent, but everything was actually amazing! The pizza was perfect, my BLT was exceptional (we're American and the different type of bacon that what we're used to was sooo good) , the local brews were refreshing, and Michael was an absolutely pleasure to be served by. Highly recommend this place!

I visited this café for lunch on the 4th of March with three friends. Food was barely passable (soup) and request for a one bacon roll was dealt with in a most unhelpful manner as it was 12h10 and apparently 10 minutes after the permitted time despite the café being virtually empty. The manner of the refusal was very poor and the request was only granted when we threatened to leave. Extremely poor customer service.

Fish and chips two weeks ago excellent,crisp batter, good chips, today batter too thick soggy uncooked inside chips pale and soggy, you can't rely on what you are going to get, comes across as being run by folk who are trying but have no idea.

My husband and I visited for lunch on our way home from a couple of nights in Oban.I had red lentil soup and he had fish n chips.Both were delicious .The other soup was pumpkin when I told the waitress/owner i had only ever had pumpkin soup in Australia(It's the only soup most places there seem to serve) and it was always pretty bland she gave me a takeaway bowl of it to try...no charge.Well just had it and I can honestly say it was one of the tastiest soups I've ever tasted.Thank you so much.

Had a quick lunch here when my tour bus stopped. Had the Cullen Skink soup and sandwich. The soup was really good, sandwich was not so much. The service was ok, pretty good given that people kept coming in. Ok for a quick lunch.

Had a lovely mac cheese with chips, salad and smashing homemade coleslaw. Would definitely recommend this as a place to eat in Inveraray. The cafe was spotless, food fresh and staff very friendly. Thank you!

Wir waren mit einer Gruppe von 5 Leuten da und wurden super freundlich empfangen. Als der Kellner mitbekam, dass wir aus Deutschland sind, hat er sogar etwas von seinem Deutsch zum Besten gegeben, sehr liebenswert. Der Service war aufmerksam und allgemein sehr gut.

Husband and I had visited here a couple of years ago so were happy to return with friends, unfortunately we were very disappointed. The staff were very friendly, although one had clearly been drinking and reeked of liquor. One of our group had a dairy intolerance and there was nothing that he could have, including a cup of coffee (just black), having driven for many hours he was most disappointed (and hungry). I had a scone, which was served warm (without asking if that's what I wanted), it was reasonable but I've definitely had better. It seemed a bit pricey. The toilets were filthy, broken and in bad need of an update. Generally the place looked run down.

Well 3 yrs ago i visited this cafe and stopped.off again with my dad and hubby today to see.if it had changed as had seen number of varying reviews and im glad to say it hadnt ...arrived at 3 pm place was still.quite busy and was greeted by waiter called michael nice irish guy smiling and welcoming ...we ordered drinks and then my fav dinner fish and chips and lasagna fr my dad ...plates arrived overflowing with chips and the haddock was delicious no bones about that batter golden and crispy too ...mama mia the lasagna was fantastico according to my dad not stodgy sauce tasty ..to finish his meal he had icecream which is not like.my dad he sd tastwd homemade reasonable prices for a touristy town ..friendly staff efficient without being intrusive ..glad i returned to.the royal burgh and not put off by negative reviews definately a jewel.in the crown.of inveraray well done

Chips at to die 4 great food reasonable prices but u don't mind paying that wee bit extra for quality food was in restaurant while back but no review then had lovely meal and best bit u can have a drink . Owners ar EXELLENT COMPANY STEVEN AND FORGET HIS WIFES NAME SORRY. Would highly recommend it for food

I ordered the Special Fish supper from the menu. It said Fish, Chips with Bread and Butter, and tea or coffee. The fish and chips arrived (very small portion of chips and nothing special about the fish) but no bread and butter. I was waiting on the server returning to ask if everything was OK with the meal but this never happened. When I was finished, I went to the counter to pay and asked about the bread and butter. I was expecting him to say they forgot, but his reply completely dismayed me. He said the bead and butter is optional. I can only assume he meant it was optional for them to decided to not give it to you because I was given no say in the matter. I'm glad we decided not to treat ourselves to the banana splits, just in case the bananas were optional.

Had fish and chips from here while passing through. Very overpriced as it's all tourists so doubtful they get returning customers. Fish was overcooked and dried out and at over £10 was just taking advantage of tourists. No dout I will get a reply saying am unfair blah blah blah. The fact you's have so many poor reviews about the price and food is no coincidence so y reply looking for a fight with reviewers.

Lo staff è accogliente e cordiale, il servizio non è male ma purtroppo il cibo non è di qualitá. Io ho preso una pizza che solo a guardarla non si avvicinava per niente a quella italiana, si vedeva che era una pizza surgelata. Addirittura col prezzemolo sopra.Il panino con l’hamburger che ha preso il mio ragazzo era accompagnato da patatine che non erano per niente fresche, erano molto secche.

Regrettably I stopped here and ordered a coffee, tea, ciabatta and fish and chips. This was most certainly the most expensive fish and chips of my life, especially for the quality. It cost £10.95 and they come from the chip shop next door! They were soggy chips and tasteless fish that felt like yesterdays leftovers. Yurk! The ciabatta came in at a whopping £7.95 and was barely filled, perhaps they were low on ingredients that day? It was lightly burnt and the bread tasted very cheap, whilst the steak inside was chewy and fatty. As if this wasn't enough the tea was given to me unmade as we were presented with hot (not boiling) water, a tea bag and a cup! We had to remind the girl to bring us milk. The cheek! The coffee was average and I have had better in the area so would recommend popping next door for a decent coffee and a tea that's actually made for you rather than a do it your self job. Overall I feel my review is fair and takes into account competition in the area and the quality of food. The one positive is that the staff were relatively friendly, although seemed rushed at times and they gave me tap water, probably the tastiest thing on the menu. I would recommend avoiding this place and heading to one of the much nicer cafe's/restaurants on the same street! AVOID!

We dined there on the evening of the Inverarary Highland Games (so the restaurant was quite busy). Excellent Cullen Skink soup - one of the best I've tasted in Scotland (outside Cullen itself). I opted for a large bowl - so glad I did. It was delicious mmmmmM!

We arrived at our Inveraray stop while on a 14-day Road Scholar trip. Lunch was on our own that day, so we tried to quickly scope all the restaurants. When it started to rain, however, we ducked into this cafe. This turned out to be a very happy accident. The place was authentic Scotland, but with a rather diverse menu for a small cafe. We decided on the Fish & Chips, which were delicious with large portions.. The food came quickly. The servers were very friendly, and all scurrying around very busily. Even though we primarily had one server, they all did double-triple-+ duty, stopping when walking by our table - and others - to ask how diners were doing.

We visited last week while on a tour of the area and before our visit to the jail.

Inverary is a pretty small town so we ended up eating here twice. The first night we had a cheeseburger and fries (We're American!) and the second night we had pizza upon the recommendation of the waiter. They were very friendly and helpful. Oh, yes - we had the fried Mars bar for dessert! Wow - a whole ton of sweet!

I am very very picky with fish and this place knocked it out of the park. Everything came out pipping hot and we couldn't get enough of it! We wanted to have a beer with our lunch and since there was three of us our waiter brought us three different bottles with glasses to share, what a great way to try something new.

This was just a quick stop for us, but we enjoyed the food and location. It was one of few restaurants with outside seats and good beer. We also had a panini, but it was a bit pricey and not as filling as I would have hoped.

We stopped and had arrived just before their lunch time started. Nevertheless, the service was excellent. He helped suggest the finest foods at the restaurant and got them out to us quickly so we could resume our tour. The pasta was delicious and the chicken special was amazing! The desert was spectacular. Everything was made in house. We described the drinks we like and our server brought us something he hand picked that was perfect just for us. Highly suggest this restaurant!

Great service, very nice, friendly and fast waiters. Food was perfect, they have homemade pasta. Perfect atmosphere, we enjoyed it very much!

Nice people, good food. We had fish and chips and the local soup. But they didn’t had the pizza they normally offer.

Waiters were very helpful and eager to take care of us. They recommended the Cullen Skink and it was excellent. Much like a chowder with a smoke flavored Haddock in it......amazing! I highly recommend this meal for a quick snack or meal.

Our Hiking travel group went here for dinner one evening and enjoyed the good original food. Most went with the fish and chips. The regular portions are huge, so I was glod to have gone for the "pensioner" version, which was a bit smaller. Fish was fresh (no wonder since the little village is right next to the sea) and tasty.

We stopped here mainly because of a server with tons of personality met us outside. Martin was fantastic, very energetic and great service. The food was good, my wife enjoyed her fish and chips which was a large portion of not overly aggressive batter which was good. Kids shared the spicy chicken pizza and devpured it. I had a calzone which was good but wish I would have got the pizza. Over all, a solid choice for lunch.

Walked in for a quick lunch. Ordered fish and chips and husband ordered the soup. The chips were the worst frozen freezer burn, badly cooked. The soup was barely warm and pureed. Waiter barely understandable. We paid 17.90 pounds for this awful lunch.

We had lunch here and had the haddock and chips - we only had one and it was large enough for my wife and I to share. It was fresh and excellent!

Very disappointed after reading good reviews.First they sold Gin but said they didnt have Tonic or offer an alternative,the waiter said No Tonic then just stood there.

Myself and family stopped for a bite too eat at the Royal burgh cafe we were welcomed by warm friendly staff the menu was great we settled for pizza and fish and chips in the end! Pizza homemade tasty kids thoroughly enjoyed it! Fish was fresh flakey and massive with light golden batter probably the best I have tasted in few years very welcoming homely bistro keep the standards up!

We absolutely loved visiting this place. Myself, my partner and my 2 children stopped to eat after a long drive. The staff bent over backwards to help us feel comfortable. Couldn't meet a nicer lot. The food was amazing I had the lasagne which I highly recommend it was mouth watering every bite. My partner and children enjoyed the fish and chips and ate the lot. We had a lovely time we will be back.

We stumbled across this place on a drive back from the West Coast. It was just perfect - delicious pizza and cake and the service was so, so friendly - the best we had on our week long trip. Keep up the good work.

The staff was personable and friendly, and the food was excellent. We came right at the start of the dinner service, and our service was very prompt. Also reasonably priced, and there was a good variety of dishes to choose from, many of them locally sourced. We tried a couple of the daily specials on the waiter's recommendation and were very pleased with our selections! Our family had a great time.

Went in for lunch, it was not too busy, we sat for ages. Waitress saw us, walked past us a few times, spoke to people waiting who came in after us and took their orders. We were still sat waiting. We tried to speak to her, she just ignored us. Sat waiting and still no sign of anyone taking our order. After seeing others have their orders taken we walked out. So if you want to be ignored, go here. If you want food and service, then don't bother.

We had a lunch here , and it was very over priced for what we had, the bill came to £21.60 the portion was very small considering the ciabattas was £8 and another £1 was added for cheese, I would not recommend here for lunch!

After sightseeing dropped in here for much needed lunch. Welcoming staff, good selection of menu choices at reasonable prices for a tourist town. We chose the fish and chips and this arrived freshly cooked with bread and butter. Very enjoyable.

Use to stop here quite a few years ago and they serve lovely big flaky fish this is no longer the case. Fish is small and basic, staff were very polite and nice. Overall not as good as it used to be and slightly overpriced...

We popped in here for lunch on a trip to Inverary on our holidays.It looked nice, the lady who showed us to our table was helpful and there was plenty of choice on the menu.The food and drink which we had was fine and there were no issues with that at all.The drinks are prepared at a counter which overlooks the seating area and our table was very close to this area so we could hear some of the conversations. The male who was preparing the drinks was obviously busy, but to be fair so were the other staff members, We got the impression that one of the young lads waiting on the tables, was fairly new as he kept having to be given direction mainly from the lady ( who we assume is the owner). However as we were leaving, my teenage daughter was mortified to hear the man preparing the drinks speak to the young waiter in rather a nasty way and certainly not a way in which a) customers can over hear it and b) anyone should really be spoken to, especially if he was still learning. I really hope the young lad sticks with his job and that the other man learns a bit of patience and tolerance, everyone who was working there was busy, but you were the only one to let it show in a very unprofessional way.

Nous nous sommes arrêtés en sortant du château. L'accueil est vraiment moyen et la nourriture n'a rien d'exceptionnel.

Piccolo locale ,abbastanza accogliente ,con un servizio super veloce.Noi abbiamo parnzato con una bistecca sottile e due uova sopra( buona e non cosi' pesante) e un'insalata royal niente male .Finelmente ho bevuto un espresso che ci assomigliava! Molto affollato,conviene arrivare per tempo.Speso con il bere 32 sterline.Per una pausa veloce!

Ce fût plutôt une bonne surprise pour un dîner. La nourriture est plutôt assez bien réussi et le personnel est très accueillant.

Dropped in today 26th July for lunch and was served by the lovely and helpful Maria....Thank goodness she advised me to take the small Cullen skink if I was going to have something else to eat...... My god, the small one would have drowned me had I fallen in...... lol...... it was lovely!!!! ...... would like to see the large one if that was a small!!!Everything else we had was tasty and freshly made...... Not a cheap lunch, but well worth money spent...... Mamma, keep Maria there for as long as possible, she is a great asset to the business.... efficient and knows her stuff .......We'll be back........ Alan Murray ( Kilmarnock)
