Absolutely fab! I’ve found my new go-to Indian in Southsea / Portsmouth. Delicious food, superb attention and great presentation. The owner is wonderful, spending time at each table, with a genuine interest in his customers and keen to tell everyone about their fantastic journey. Hold on to that chef!!!

First time visiting yesterday and what a find. The host was attentive even to the extent he went to the local shop to buy double cream so we could have a liquor coffee at the end of the meal. The food was cooked to perfection with the right amount of spices. We will definitely be back . If you are looking for a Indian restaurant this will not dissapoint

I have worked and travelled extensively in India, both in Delhi and across the south. And for years in this country we have been subject to chicken or beef or vegetable, covered with the same old orange gloop or the red, or the brown. It is tedious and becoming very stale. It was therefore a delight to arrive at the Royal Bengal in Southsea. Madame had Paneer Tikka, and I had Chicken Tikka Shashlik. Both were cooked to perfection: Appropriate use of spices, high quality ingredients, immaculate flavours and textures. Clearly, care had been taken, and it was such a relief after years of mediocre “Indian” meals. The place was immaculate and the service attentive without being cloying Highly recommended!

This is not your run of the mill curry house. A wonderfully different menu, excellent attentive host and fantastic chef. Would definitely recommend for those searching for a more refined night out. I will be a regular!

Elegant decor, friendly service, beautifully prepared food which tasted delicious, washed down with beer and red wine. Railway lamb and mixed grill were spicy as expected. We were offered poppadoms, naan bread and a choice of rice to go with the main meal at extra cost, which we accepted. Clearly priced menu, a very reasonable £35 per head in total, x 4 of us. Will go to Royal Bengal again.

Having watched all the renovations taking place it was great to see it finally open. The food was outstanding and beautifully presented. A lot of thought, care and attention has gone into this venue by the owners. The staff were courteous and polite. They have a fabulous downstairs bar area which would be ideal for private parties. We wish them well and will return

Excellent food, but just one waiter/host. Followed by a problem/misunderstanding about the bill... 45 minutes before we were given menus for the food choices... The quality of the food and therefore the chef(s) is great, but it is woefully understaffed in the restaurant.

If you want a massive portion at a fair price (for a greasy curry) go elsewhere. If you want a fair portion of gourmet food at an amazing price for the quality, come here. This offers an Indian Meal in the truest sense - take your time and enjoy the range of starters and make a night of it. Exquisite cuisine - and I don’t say that lightly! The photos aren’t a fluke - the food is beautifully presented.

Food was fantastic, but quite a way to go to make up for the delays to service and the 20 min wait for the bill. And not a great response from the owner when we raised it tbh. Hopefully they can fix and this was only teething problems. as the food was great…..

We have excitedly watched The Royal Bengal take shape and couldn’t wait to visit….we were not disappointed. The quality of the decor matched the quality of the food. The presentation was exceptional, it was delicious and the price was very reasonable for what was provided. The Royal Bengal is now our new favourite restaurant and we will most definitely become regular costumers. Good luck in your business, you deserve success.

Maybe a Friday night is not the best of times, but I was so disappointed. We'd booked early (1845) so beat the rush that shortly ensued, but a quality restaurant should be able to maintain its standards at all times. The SERVICE was EXCELLENT and GRACIOUS, but the food was ABYSMAL - no nose, no taste, no fire at all - I ordered a Royal Venison starter and an Ayre (Catfish) Jalfrazi main - both totally insipid. There were just eight small pieces of fish completely swamped by onions and nondescript goo with no detectable spices as descibed. I would call this this place THE CON MERCHANTS - and I certainly don't recognise it from the website descriptions or some of the many rave revues. Please tell me you should have have done better - 07730 982 809 - ask for TONY

Family of 6 Visited on a Thursday at 6pm so not busy. One of us made 3 attempts to get a glass of cola, 1 of us didn't get the rice accompaniment for our meal and 1 of us simply didn't get the meal ordered and one of the side dishes didn't arrive so we all just shared what we did get. Lamb Jalfrezi was ok, but both Chicken tikka masalas, and chicken biryani, the chicken was tough, 2 sides of chips both really over cooked and onion bahjis similarly dry and overcooked, in fact they tasted like they were yesterday's just refried to make them hot. All in all really disappointing. Good job there's lots of choices in Albert rd so won't make same mistake twice
