Rose and Crown, York in York

We stayed here for a few nights. The staff are all friendly and helpful. The food is very good and great value for money. The breakfast was also very good. Our room was a bit tired and could do with a upgrade but soon got used to it as you don't spend all day in it. The other issue is the bathroom with no privacy glass , faulty blind and no heating you could use the toilet and see the road. All this and I would still go back as we had a great stay. Thanks to Simon and the team

Last minute visit for Sunday lunch a couple of weeks ago. Everything on the menu was priced around £17.95 which is not the cheapest around so was expecting a lot. Ordered 2 Sunday lunches and a steak pie. 2 soft drinks and a beer. Really friendly staff. Sunday lunches consisted of 1 Yorkshire pudding some roast potatoes and some veg and of course the meat which was cooked to perfection. The pie looked lovely inside the steak was nice and tasty but packed with carrot as well? Not sure why ? I would rather have more steak or a smaller pie. Also had puddings crumble , sticky toffee but no custard available just ice cream? Why? Total bill came to £84 . I know not most expensive but not the cheapest either. Maybe look at having just the meat in the pies and getting some custard and i would say 5 stars. Felt full and it was tasty.

What a fantastic place to stay and eat! We stayed overnight, room had everything we needed and was clean and tidy. No noise from pub below. Road traffic noise if you have the window open but that is to be expected, absolutely great with window closed. Bed comfy. Parking was fab and easy. Service was amazing, staff were so welcoming and friendly! We hadn’t booked for tea and seeing it was so busy and looked good we made sure to get a table booked. Food was very tasty! We had pie and steak. Breakfast the following morning was just as excellent and staff still as friendly. We will be staying here again when we come back to York!

Sometimes a nice simple meal can be perfect, it’s not just the food, although on this occasion it was of a very good quality (two chicken roasts and a steak and Guinness pie) it’s a lot of little things that add up to a very pleasant experience, nice professional staff, a nice, unstuffy decor and a general feeling that you are welcome are all part of the equation and The Rose and Crown get all these seemingly minor details just right. Been here several times over the years, we live quite local, and although prices have gone up a bit (where haven’t they !!) the standards have never varied. I would recommend this place to anyone who would enjoy a good pub meal that’s a lot better than that. There are letting rooms with the pub (I’ve never stayed, living locally) but I think you would be hard pressed to find a better location than this for central York, with car parking and on several bus routes.

Staff pleasant, room clean but noisey, needs secondary glazing (room 3) Mattress could be better. Breakfast OK but asking if you wanted more tea or coffee or toast would be nice instead of having to ask for it. Would stay again.

Made a booking 10 months ago. This stay is part of a longer tour of the east of England. Been called today and lectured about not responding/receiving an email. Despite constantly saying I’m away (I do not look or access my emails when I am away) have gone into my emails to find a demand for more money because I’ve ‘been charged the wrong rate’ it has taken this company 10min to to notice their error and I’m expected to fix it. The staff member on the phone was rude and hostel towards me over their issue. They have had the contract for 10 months and have now decided (3 days before my stay) the contract terms need to be changed. I do not recommend staying here and i recommend people take caution when communicating with staff.

The lady dealing with orders and food was not very friendly. I took a seat about 530 ,my order was taken about 20 minutes later. My meal didn't arrive by 640 so I had to leave. Ridiculous. Customer service training needed.

Stayed overnight here on a Sunday having spent the afternoon at the Barbican, watching the snooker. Chose to eat here and we both opted for the Sunday Roast, one beef and one chicken. Very nice food, good quality and freshly cooked. We did find the restaurant and bar area a tad cool as we were sat there and noticed the radiators weren’t on. However our room was warm, clean and functional. Breakfast next morning was excellent, if a little slow at coming out, although that was probably as it was freshly cooked to order. Free parking too is a huge bonus.

We checked Trip Advisor before our visit to York and found this pub, the reviews were excellent and the menu looked great. We were not disappointed, I had the fish pie and my wife had the steak and Guinness pie. We were full, the food was superb and the staff couldn’t have been better. If you visit York you must try this pub, the food, wine and service is excellent.

Arrived just in time for the early bird lunch menu 12-4pm. We ordered 3 different pies from the menu, some had soup starters some had pudding. It was beautiful! £10 for 2 courses. Lovely staff, great service! All good!!!

Being in York for a week, we were only staying across the road from the Rose & Crown, so decided to give it a try based on good TA, reviews. A warm, comfortable & friendly atmosphere engulfed us on arrival. It was early evening so plenty of table space g there wouldn't be later., we discovered! We chose a table for 2 near the delightful open fire. Ordering drinks at the bar, we perused the menu. The pies come recommended but not feeling we could manage them, having had a sizeable lunch, we opted for sausages & mash & flat iron steak with salad & chips. The food arrived after 20 mins, which indicated it had been freshly prepared. Both meals were superb, both in presentation, generosity & flavour. My steak melted in the mouth, the chips were hot & crisp & altogether moreish! My husband's sausages were meaty & flavourful goo, with creamy mash d tasty cabbage. The friendly waitress who asked if we were enjoying our meals, had time to chat to us & also took a second drinks order, which she brought over. The first course having settled by then, I decided to have a dessert & chose the apple and blackberry crumble with icecream. Once again, a delicious dish with a crispy crumble topping & sweet but not overly so, fruit filling. If it hadn't been for having to wait another hour, we would have stayed for the popular quiz night, which begins at 9pm. But having had a tiring day during touristy things in York, we left feeling replete & very satisfied. Well done Rose & Crown, a true gem of a pub!!!

We parked near and thought we’d pop in for a drink until our friends arrived. Lovely, cosy pub. Friendly guy behind the bar. Ordered club sandwich and a fish finger sandwich, both were very tasty, good price and had amazing chips. Highly recommended.

Absolutely amazing food. Can highly recommend. Was just round the corner from the Barbican for our concert so was ideal. Loved the large wine glasses 🍷 The staff were so welcoming and friendly. Thankyou for a pleasant visit.

We booked this Inn on the advice from a friend who lives in Yorkshire. The rooms are not fancy but the beds/bedding are very comfy. Our room was large and super clean! The pub and dining rooms are very British! They have good drinks specials throughout the week and the food is very good. They specialize in "pies". We were there for two nights and ate in the Inn both nights. A big shout out to Christopher who couldn't be more accommodating. If I ever am in York, UK again, I'll defiantly book here! You should too.

We came to this unassuming pub and had a brilliant meal. We both ordered pies. My husband had a steak pie and I had a celeriac, leek and cheese pie. Both were delicious and served with lovely chips and mushy peas. The person serving was good fun and friendly. It’s a bit off the beaten track but worth the walk as the food is lovely. People on the next table ordered burgers and sausage and mash which looked excellent too.

Called in on the off chance after reading reviews and we were not disappointed. We had chicken & mushroom pie & fish pie. Both were absolutely delicious, well presented and very filling. Definitely recommend.

We stayed over for one night. Lovely room, but it was on the front and very noisy with students from midnight till 4.30am so no sleep. We have just arrived back home after another wonderful stay at this amazing pub. I cannot fault anything. |the service once again was outstanding. Every member of staff do their best to make you feel welcome, nothing is too much trouble for them. We had our usual room which was clean and had everything we needed. I accept that you can hear noise from the main road which the pub stands on, but due to the historic importance of the building alterations to the windows are not allowed. If this is important to you it may spoil your stay a little, but for us the food, service and comfortable beds out way any traffic noise. We will book agaiun for next year, and once again it will be a break that we will be counting down to days for.

This is real food, beautifully cooked. The pie was full of tender beef and tasty gravy. The sculptural chips tasted as good as they looked. The house red was smoothness itself. All in all, a superb meal.

Well what can i say ? It was perfect well organised and beautiful food n staff. First class meal well worth a money. Well done to all concerned.
