Just to say to Alex & his colleagues. Thank you all for a lovely evening and stay. Could not have been made more welcome in a proper traditional pub. The Rose and Crown definitely one to put in book. Great top quality choice of drink choice (Especially the wine menu, hence the piccy). Food & breakfast totally hit the spot. Room exactly what I wanted, quiet, quaint & comfy. As for the staff & service couldn't have been more welcoming, plus always a smile on everyone's (Genuine) faces. Great stay, and real proper place, cheers 🍻

We often stop at the R&C for a pint or Sunday lunch and I just do not understand the negative reviews here. I can only assume that some people have insane expectations of what a traditional British pub (and pub food!) should be. The staff are always very friendly, the atmosphere is great - yes the bar area is often full of locals but I mean, it *is* a country pub first and foremost, not a tourist hot spot - and the food is always warm and tasty, good quality pub grub. Ok, it is not the cheapest - expect to pay best part of £50 for Sunday lunch for two - but such are the times we live in and it’s all local produce rather than mass produced trash. If you’re on a dog walk or visiting the area, do not hesitate to pop by and if you’re unsure or something isn’t right , just politely let the team know and they will take care of it rather than moaning online after. Long live the Rose & Crown.

Had Sunday Lunch there (Oct 20th) when we arrived the Main Bar was quite busy with Diners & I Presume locals sat at the Bar! All three Bar Staff had there arms folded & it was a good 5 minutes before I was approached for my drinks order! We had a table booked for 2pm & we were shown to our table in the Main Restaurant which apart from a table of 6 people in the far corner was completely empty & had absolutely no atmosphere! After about 10 minutes a young lady approached us for our order & we both chose Roast Beef! To be fair the Meals were perfect, generous portions & the Beef & Potatoes cooked beautifully! No one came to ask if everything was OK, and no one asked if we wanted a Desert! So we decided to leave & went to the Bar to pay! Another 5 minutes passed before the Barman fetched the Card Machine & the only words he said was £36! On that experience I definitely wouldn't go back & certainly wouldn't recommend!

A very happy! Service was amazing, food was delicious and spot on time. We are a walking group on a tight schedule and had pre-ordered our food. Everything went right according to schedule and the place is run by an impeccable woman, Donna. Highly recommend, not to mention the cadre of this charming early Jacobean pub just up the street from Kipling's Batemans in a very charming village.

We visited the area and came across the Rose & Crown. We decided to have lunch there - it was nice. A roll with salad- oddly served on a scaffolding board. We decided to return for steak night a few nights away. That evening we ate in another pub (next to the car park) and had a wonderful meal and looked forward to our steak at the R&C. We arrived for steak night and the pub was near empty as was the restaurant area. That should have made us worry. Great service and meal was set before us in a no time at all. Husband’s steak was OK mine (medium rare) was rubbery, gristly and hard to cut. I ate the chips and other bits and cut as much of the inedible steak as I could but had to give up. We weren’t asked how the meal was whilst we were eating, nor did the waitress/barmaid/ owner, when she took our plates, mention the huge blob of inedible rubber that was on mine. I waited to see if she’d mention if all was OK. She didn’t. I’m not that confident in complaining but had I been asked, I would have said I couldn’t cut it yet alone eat it- actually it made me feel sick. How I wish we’d eaten again at the other pub. NB I’ve worked in the hospitality sector and if a customer has left a huge amount on their plate- especially a steak- you’d ask why

My wife and I booked a night here whilst attending a funeral nearby. We received a warm welcome from Donna, the manageress, our greyhound was instantly fussed and given water. I received especial attention as I am 6’3” and they keep a tally on how many headbutts their guests give to the venerable beams. Warning - they are low😉 We were joined by 7 friends for dinner. Rosie, our waitress, was patient with our shambolic attempts to coordinate our orders but the varied selection arrived simultaneously. Helpings were generous and the steak and ale pie was a classy act. Alex the barman kept the us well supplied with wine and other drinks. It was a very happy evening and we retired For the night in very comfortable beds with lovely crisp sheets The bedroom was simple and immaculately clean. Breakfast was delicious - generous helpings freshly cooked bu Doris with delicious bacon from the local butcher. Greyhound even had his own bowl of bacon trimmings so it was a very happy trio who set off into the rain We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can recommend the staff who really do credit to this lovely old pub. We feel very lucky to have found this pub and met such a great team who create an atmosphere totally in keeping with this historic hostelry Please and experience it for yourselves

In order to visit the Kipling house, Bateman's, my wife and I chose the local Inn the "Rose & Crown" to stay the night, and were very glad we did. Our room was attractive, with crisp neat linen. We coincided with their weekly 'Steak Night' and excellent it was. In particular, I'd mentioned ro 'Donna', the very nice manager, that I was on crutches and asked about local taxis. In the event, a local Bateman's Volunteer kindly gave us a lift there from the local station; but Donna had invited me to give her a call when we needed a lift and duly came out specially to fetch us back to the "Rose & Crown", for which we were very grateful. She and all the staff were delightful. We would highly recommend staying and/or eating at the "Rose & Crown". [Donna, I'm sorry not to have made this review sooner..]

Hubby and I rolled in after a chilly dog walk, to an open fire and friendly atmosphere, immediately seated for lunch despite no booking. Having seen the roast pass several times to fellow diners, I didn't hesitate to order the roast beef, while hubby plumped for rabbit and bacon pie. Like many, I do believe the test of a decent roast is in the gravy...I was not disappointed. We dined beside another couple and their dog, who also had the roast, including 1 for said pooch, which had its own listing on the menu, just after the child's meal! A most excellent glass of Rioja for myself and the seasonal, rather tasty Harvey's Christmas Ale for hubby. Garlic bread to start and sticky toffee pud were admittedly excessive to requirements, but it means that instead of cooking tonight, we can put our feet up when we get home and maintain the vibe enjoyed as we dined. Regulars occupied the bar stools while families with young children were also warmly welcomed. Very friendly and efficient staff with just the right level of banter - with both human and canine customers. A very fine dine indeed! Thank you.

Good pub tucked away off the high street. Beers from Harveys were in good condition. The menu is a cut above normal pub food...nothing too fancy but nicely cooked, decent portions and friendly and efficient service. Wonderful atmosphere a lot to do with the Landlady who is so professional and accommodating. Every thing about this very old pub is wonderful. Staff are friendly and helpful. The Beer is served as it should be, due I am sure to the expertise of the landlady, also a good selection of wines. Food is good our only criticism I wish the chips were home made. Even if one had less the quality would make a huge difference as it is such an English thing these days to serve frozen chips. Why ? when they are so easy and not more difficult than fresh vegetables. Deserves awards this pub. Have been many times and ow once again now restrictions are lifting.

We decided to visit Bateman’s with friends and wanted to go and have a pub lunch after our house tour. The Rose and Crown is located nearby in Burwash. We booked a table and were warmly greeted on arrival. The service was very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and all homemade and freshly cooked. I had the homemade steak and stilton pie of the day, the others had Rye fresh beer battered cod and chips and a homemade omelette. The desserts were equally delicious a treacle tart with ice-cream, Bailey’s creme brûlée, and blackberry cheese cake. There was a lovely log fire burning which gave the pub a cosy feel on a rather cold day and all added to the atmosphere. We will definitely return when we visit the area again.

Booked this pub for an evening meal just after Christmas based on previous Tripadvisor reviews. This pub lived up to expectations and actually exceeded them. We called last minute to book a table and luckily looks like we got the last one, pub was very busy when we arrived but we were greeted quickly and warmly and advised to get a drink at the bar until our table was ready. Our waitress took our drink to the table when ready and was very attentive and polite, explained the menu and gave opinions on the various dishes and reserved the last piece of pudding that I requested. Food was hot and delicious and portion sizes very generous. Presentation was excellent and fantastic value for money. Two glasses of wine, a shared starter, 2 mains and a dessert, just over £40. We live about an hour away, but wouldn't hesitate in popping down for another evening meal. Well done to staff front of and back of house, a great find.

We arrived at the pub today and were seated in the lovely restaurant section in front of the cosy warm fireplace. The servers were polite and swiftly took our drink orders. When ordering our food they were able, without prior warning, to accommodate my daughter's dietary/allergy requirements beautifully and also they happily altered a children's meal to a full size meal for one of the party who fancied somthing from the young guests menu. After a short while our plates arrived and my goodness they looked amazing! Lovely colourful portions of fresh delicious home cooked food. I had turkey and it did not disappoint...it was succulent and flavoursome along with all the traditional trimmings that each had their own story to tell...it was gorgeous and I was stuffed afterwards. Others in the party were just as impressed including my daughter who suffers with crohns disease and is so often unable to enjoy meals as much as this. The empty plates were efficiently cleared away and we all ordered a desert. The deserts were beautifully presented and in generous proportions, we scoffed the lot and enjoyed trying each others as they all looked lovely and again seemed to be homemade and wholesome. After today's experience I can wholeheartedly recommend the Rose & Crown and will definitely revisit next time we are down visiting family.Thankyou Mireille and your staff for today's hospitality we left feeling quite content indeed and your love for the place was evident in the cleanliness and attention to detail throughout! We booked into the Rose and Crown for a Sunday lunch whilst staying in the village on a winter holiday. It is run by a very welcoming, friendly and hyper efficient staff. When we went into the dining room we were a little dismayed to see that a large family party had been already seated, so we were prepared for a long wait. How wrong were we. Our drinks appeared quickly, our order of roast beef taken and in no time our meals were served. The meal was very good and so how nice it was to be served appropriate, properly cooked winter vegetables served with not a clump of broccoli in sight. I particularly enjoyed the cauliflower cheese. I`m afraid we had to pass on a pudding.A second visit was made later that week, but only for drinks this time, on the night of the Christmas fair which was held in the pub and elsewhere in the village. Again we thoroughly enjoyed that occasion. Our third visit came for dinner on the Friday which we chose to eat in the bar. Again, we received the same friendly, efficient service. We chose a confit duck leg, mashed potato with apple and the most delicious red cabbage. How can you beat that on a December evening?

We came here very late hoping for lunch after visiting Bateman’s the former home of Rudyard Kipling. Unfortunately the NT cafe was full and the first pub we found in the village had stopped serving. Feeling hungry and wondering if we would end up eating sandwiches in the car we found the Rose & Crown just off the high street. Lovely old pub, with beams, fireplace, settles and cushions. I had sausage and mash, two massive bangers, mashed potato and a good mixture of veggies with a lovely gravy, my companion had the Hunters Chicken. Lovely pub, friendly staff but there was nothing on the menus that wasn’t cooked in garlic? I just don’t understand why a roast dinner would be cooked like this. Not everyone likes garlic. The chicken, veg and potatoes were all covered. Disgusting. I then just asked for grilled sea bass and was told that the whole menu was cooked in garlic. This to me, says abysmal chef with no skills or talent and just a cheap and easy way to flavour food.

My wife and I ate lunch at the Rose and Crown on our way to visit Batemans, and enjoyed a very pleasant meal. The staff were very friendly and attentive and the food was very good (and plentiful) and was not overpriced. I chose the Rose and Crown over other local pubs and restaurants because they had whitebait on the menu, and I was not disappointed. They were delicious. I can definitely recommend the Rose and Crown.

We have visited the Rose and Crown a few times and always enjoyed the food, though as vegetarians we always found the menu limited for choice.

The location and look of this pub alone is big plus. It has a wonderful historic atmosphere and a beautiful and well-kept interior (much of it Tudor- you may learn the hard way if you are very tall!). Though inside it is cosy and with a fire in cold weather, when the sun shines the garden is THE best. The staff are friendly and attentive. Mireille, the owner, is a superwoman Dynamo. It gets very sociable, but not rowdy. Dogs are welcomed too, and have a civilising effect. The choice of local beers and ciders is excellent, and the food is always scrumptious and never boring. It also offers excellent catering for small functions.

Drinks section for ciders is good and cheaper than other pubs in the village. Waitresses are nice and friendly and perform their job well. Steak burger was the best I'd ever tried and the chips were nice and chunky so topped it off.

Friendly staff and a nice beer garden which was a real sun-trap. Traditional pub fayre - the fish and chips were great.

Another wonderful time at this tucked away treasure. We arrived at The Rose & Crown in time for lunch. There were 6 of us. I had the special which was sea bass risotto, it was just delicious. My son had the sausage and mash which looked amazing. The other dishes were just perfect. We took a stroll in the afternoon and the party began at 7.30 at this lovely pub. We had a fantastic time, great hospitality and food, matched by the comfort of the bedrooms.

Lovely old pub: historic building with a well inside the entrance hall. Low ceilings and picturesque, in the ancient village of Burwash.

A nice little historical pub. Greeted at the door on arrival and well looked after during our visit. Excellent food - would definitely return for the Steak & Ale pie. 4x Harvey's beers available. This place has its locals, but by all means it's never a loud/rowdy pub. Be sure to book your table as I heard that the following evening they were expecting 40 diners in the restaurant and 30 in the bar.

The Rose and Crown is our local pub and worthy of good reviews nonetheless. It is where we go to meet and eat with friends in the village and with visiting family and friends. The open and welcoming atmosphere from both staff and locals make this an ideal place to call in for a drink or to eat. The food is very good with plenty of choice. Thank you to Mireille and her team for making this pub a superb place to socialise.

We stopped off in Burwash after visiting Batemans house nearby. The rose and crown is a good English country pub either the traditional beams to match. We ate in the restaurant and found the food to be really good and reasonably priced! Steak burgers all round!

Great country pub, loads of atmosphere with a very friendly vibe. Good ales and food.Limited parking outside but a large car park opposite. Easy to miss as it’s down a small lane off the High Street - but worth finding.

We had a leaving drinks and buffet arranged by a colleague and it was perfect. The restaurant was just the right size with the right lighting and the buffet was excellent, all homemade food by the chef. Thoroughly recommend the Rose and Crown for small functions. Thank you to Mereille, the landlady for an excellent evening.

Good atmosphere but would have liked to see the log fire alight on a chilly lunchtime. Very good roast pheasant main course and loved the Bailey’s creme brûlée. Good choices on the menu for lunches.

Took a chance turning down a small lane having seen the ‘good food ‘ sign. There was the Rise & Crown pub. We fancied lunch and had a great meal. I had the home made beef and ale pie - wow, best steak pie ever. Large portions with excellent range of winter veg. My MiL has the same but it was too large a portion so they offered to box the rest for her dinner. My wife had the ham & egg. Excellent. Great friendly service too. Highly recommended.

After having a nice Sunday roast we visited for the 3rd time, I ordered beef and cheddar pie, we waited over 50 mins for this to arrive, i'd been working all day so was tired and hungry, when my pie finally arrived it was so hard my knife would not pierce it and slammed on the plate so hard everyone turn to look and see what had happened anyhow I ate what i could after the wait i would have eaten my arm, so any i explained to the waiter he apologized but did not offer to replace it, I then wrote about this on the face book page and have been again ignored, I have decided we will not return but in future go somewhere that can satisfy and offer to replace something that is just not worth putting on a place, a horrified customer.

Think,it must have changed hands since we were last here. A comprehensive and reasonable menu and friendly staff. The food was excellent and a cut well above usual pub fare. Well worth a visit.

Was passing through the area after work and thought I'd give the Ship a go for dinner. My meal was excellent! And I was served by a lovely lady called Sydney, what was a spur of the moment decision that turned out to be a real pleasure. Will not hesitate to recommend and will be sure to return.

Coffee shop located inside Tescos. Seems to suffer problems with its dishwasher they have an official sign printed to state it’s out of order. Staff seemed more interested in preventing people sitting down from 1 O’clock on a Sunday. Did have the misfortune to go there for a coffee once and find due to a problem with their machine no coffee was available. Shame I never knew before my 2 mile walk to get there.
