After traveling over 400 miles from Scotland and searching for a local pub for a meal that wasn`t closing early, in a area we didn't know, we were warmly welcomed by the owners of the Rose & Crown, Becky & John, where absolutely nothing was too much trouble. Friendly, courteous and attentive, understanding we had travelled a long way, quickly took a drink order and menus produced. A wonderful table of food appeared, piping hot and delicious in every way. It was sooooo good!! We felt relaxed and not at all rushed. They advised us on places to visit the next day before a wedding with our friends the following day. All of their recommendations were spot on. We returned on the Friday where the specials board was very inviting. I had the sea food platter which did not disappoint, adorned with wild garlic, perfect. In addition it was good value for money with good quality red wine at less than £20 a bottle, Becky and John made us feel special and enjoyed hearing the stories of fossil exploration from out youngest. We would go back again? without doubt.

A lovely dog friendly pub serving excellent meals. We had booked a table for the carvery on Wednesday and enjoyed it so much that we immediately booked a table for the next night, to try the standard menu. We both had the roast Turkey at the carvery, which was delicious, served with lovely crisp roast potatos and a selection of nicely cooked vegetables. Well worth a visit but make sure you book for the Carvery.

This pub used to be a favourite of our walking group, so much that a number of years ago we had our Christmas lunch there. I accept that Coronavirus has had a detrimental effect on most pubs. The precautions taken were excellent, and being rather ancient we do have some concern, but were quite happy. The food was of a reasonable standard, but nothing to rave over. Service was also of a reasonable .standard

8 of us, friends and family including a toddler went for Sunday Carvery. The beef was beautifully cooked and the Swede mash was a particular favourite with our young diner. I loved the sweet and tender parsnips. Although we were quite full most of us had dessert too, really nicely presented. The tiramisu is one of the best I've tasted. Lovely, thank you.

I don’t know what on earth has happened, previously a really lovely carvery, in my opinion, one of the best around. However, now happily serving burnt soggy potatoes, burnt floppy parsnips, Yorkshire’s that turn to dust. Overcooked veg and stuffing balls only suitable for a catapult. You choose from ‘regular’ or ‘large’ size dinners but both options are served on the same sized? Can’t fathom that one! The tables are laid beautifully with quality linen and cutlery however it seems that they have acquired a job lot of small, standard issue NHS dinner plates. Salt and pepper pots were dirty and empty (standard set up procedure for any eating establishment is surely to ensure the basics are tended to?) Dusty Christmas decorations still fill the pub and sad, half melted candles are the droopy center piece to each table. We’ve never had a friendly welcome or even a nod of the head in acknowledgement from the landlord and this wasn’t the exception, not a goodbye or thanks, previously because the food was great it was almost ignorable but actually it’s just plain rudeness. Whilst I’m on a roll, I find it really distasteful when plates are collected and left overs (today plentiful) scraped and stacked at the table. It’s not a school canteen, and in my experience it’s not in the slightest bit professional. We actually enquired with interest what one of the dishes was ... we were told it was cauliflower cheese! Now, don’t get me wrong but I’ve seen a few cauliflower cheeses in my time, and even knocked up the odd one or two and NEVER, ever has it resembled cheese porridge with charcoal crust! Won’t be going back, and I don’t recommend it.

Had Sunday lunch here. Brilliant! Sunday carvery about two months ago was a disappointment, but what a transformation with a new chef. Absolutely spot on. Staff, as always, were efficient and helpful.

It was nearly 2pm and we wanted lunch so we popped in here hoping we would not be too late. Fortunately the chef had not gone home. We received a very warm welcome and very good, simple food. What a good choice. We shall be back. Oh, and there's plenty of parking.

This is one of the worst meals we have all had in the area for years - see full review The cooking was terrible but it was a bank holiday and so could have been cooked by a stand in chef but they need to get their act together or they will lose what was a very good reputation.

Wonderfully converted barn as an annexe to the pub. Beautifully decorated, extremely comfortable and wow..... the bathroom. Massive bath, walk in shower and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was incredible and of great quality. Loved it! Want to go back in the summer to take advantage of the garden and the terrace outside the room. Delightful

We've driven past this place many times and said it looked inviting, finally managed to visit yesterday, Saturday lunchtime. Lunch menu basic but that's good for us with a fussy child. Food was freshly cooked, served hot and tasted as good as it looked. We'll definitely be going back to try out the carvery soon, having read reviews of that.

We have been to this pub quite a few times for the Wednesday OAP special but this if the first time we have been there for the Sunday carvery - the place was very busy but we were served quickly, had a nice table and the carvery was amazing - nice to find beef cooked properly - lovely dessert too. Very prettily decorated for Christmas too. Will definitely be going there again on a Sunday.

We visited here during our stay nearby for this week, lovely food, staff very friendly and nice place to visit even had a well inside the restaurant. We recommend the lamb kofte kebab or the firecracker prawns to start, the chicken pesto with potatoes and peppers or the grass fed steak with all the trimmings for main and Malteser Pavlova or the fudge cake for pudding even took some lemon tart cheesecake back to our lodge for later as was so nice. Homemade food and good value. Would recommend and we will visit here again if ever over this way in future note they took card payment too.

Found myself needing a quick food stop on my way to a meeting a bumped into this gem. Was first through the door at 6pm was met by 3 friendly staff. Explained I was in a bit short on time but would like some food. Ordered the sirloin steak and peppercorn sauce. The service was quick, polite and the food was lovely. My steak was cooked perfectly. I will look to go there again and would go out of my way to do so.

We had a meal here mid week for a birthday celebration. We had a pint of prawns and chilli chicken strips to start and burgers, steak and seafood chowder for main. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals, the prices were very fair for the quality and service very prompt and friendly. Range of beers and ciders, many of which are local, very refreshing indeed. Roll on the next celebration .

Three generations went to the Rose and Crown for dinner. We ate in the restaurant area which was nicely laid out, we had booked the table earlier in the day.The choice of food was very good for all ages and the service was good also. An extensive choice of desserts. There is ample parking available and a nice outside seating area for when the days are a bit warmer - end of April and feels like winter.Would most definitely return on another visit to Dorset.

To be fair, we visited with a large party and the service basically couldn't cope and was quite chaotic. Our service was extremely slow, including waiting 30 minutes just for the drinks but other, individual diners seemed not to have suffered our problems. However, the food, only a carvery on Sundays, was very well cooked and the portions were generous. One could choose between a small or a large plate although it was difficult to tell the difference. On our table, the wines were not good. The pub is thatched in a small village on the busy A352 and has a large restaurant area as well as the smaller bar area. There is also a large outdoor garden.
