We were in the locality of Barlborough on a Wednesday night. We had been to a pub 200 metres away who had stopped serving food early as they were empty. We went just down the road, and this place was packed with people eating, drinking etc. it was lively as there was a quiz, bingo later and also play your cards right. Not for everyone, but definitely the best in the area by far. We ordered food and drinks. Sarah, our waitress was very pleasant and helpful, great service. The landlord Mark also came over to make sure we were happy, and that the noise/atmosphere was not a problem for us. We enjoyed our food and the general atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

First time trying the curry from here had the chicken tikka even though I had heard the curry’s are a home made recipe and I’ve got to admit that’s is the best chicken tikka I’ve had in a very long time well done to Faye the chef as this curry has gone down a dream ❤️ and a very good job to Kris being busy this evening busy being fully attentive to our needs from the start to finish

We ordered a buffet for a large funeral and wow the food was absolutely amazing and exceeded our expectations, the quality and presentation of the food was excellent! Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the buffet from the sandwiches and canapés, to the home made cakes and the cheese board which in itself was out of this world! I can't thank the Rose and Crown enough for there help with the buffet as the list of items we wanted was extensive but everything was met and the Service was also 5 star thank you!

Dreadful experience in what can only be described at best as a village pub. The food was shocking and very very limited with several of the items on the menu ' unavailable '.... the special pie - deer & beer - was served to me stone cold so it was returned to the kitchen, microwaved, and given back to me. Microwaving pastry and chips (as EVERYONE knows) made them soggy and inedible. The best thing about the meal is the mushy peas, they were at least green ( cold until microwaved also).Several others said there food was awful and the service inadequate with just one girl running around. We were a party of 12 , some travelling from Scotland and some from the east coast first a long awaited family reunion and all I can say is that the Rose & Crown should not be classified as having a restaurant as they were more concerned about the pub quiz and their food foul !!!

Fabulous food n welcome Popped into Barlborough on the way back from Cresswell lunchtime, was going to the Stonehouse as we visited there a couple of times while house hunting but glad we didn't. Rose & Crown was a great find, great enthusiastic welcome on entering and great service all round from them on with drinks and food orders. And what food... Absolutely faultless (except ate to much), big portions and super tasty. I swear the chicken sandwich had whole chicken breasts in.... The chips n onion ring sides also first class. We were due to stay at a nearby Hotel so decided to have Sunday Lunch here on the way. The pub was very busy and clearly popular with locals but we were given a table in the quieter dining area. The Landlord was front of house looking after diners and made a real effort to make sure everything was ok during our visit and regularly checked in with us. We both had the Prawn Cocktail for our starter and the delicious home made steak pie for our main. For dessert we the chocolate brownies and the lemon merangue pie. The portions on every dish were plentiful and tasted great and compliments to the chef for what theyre producing in the kitchen. Finally the price, a 3 course meal for around £20 is fantastic value and given the high level of service and food this really is a great pub we hope to one day return to.

At last this place finally has that lovely feeling of a proper village pub, all thanks to the new landlady Lynne and her team who have clearly worked hard to put this pub back on the right track. I go in with my son most Sunday afternoons and i have to say it’s a joy sitting in the lovely beer garden which has been vastly improved more so than previous owners in years gone by. I haven’t tried the food yet but from what I’ve seen it looks really good and i like the idea of introducing a tapas menu at very reasonable prices. The atmosphere inside the bar and in the beer garden is great and everyone seems to be enjoying the pub.Well done Lynne and team, wishing you all the success you clearly deserve , may it long continue.

Corporate Buffet Lunch Review. For our recent corporate board meeting, we opted for a buffet lunch, and the entire team was unanimously impressed by the presentation, quality, and taste. Every part was freshly homemade, showcasing an admirable attention to detail and culinary finesse. The Mediterranean pasta salad was a delightful blend of flavors and textures, setting a high standard right from the start. The sandwich fillings were equally impressive, with the coronation chicken wraps standing out as a particular highlight—rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The pork apple and sage sausage rolls were a hit, offering a savoury burst of taste. Even the tortillas and dips, often overlooked components, were prepared with care and precision, enhancing the overall experience. What truly sets this service apart is its ability to cater to all tastes and dietary needs, ensuring everyone finds something to enjoy. In summary, I would highly recommend this buffet for any corporate or private event. The Rose and Crown has truly excelled in providing a seamless and satisfying experience.

This is one of our local pubs and been here often for a drink with friends and the occasional meal. This was the first time we have been for a meal since the reopening and was really disappointed. I ordered the steak pie but had to send it back because the crust was rock hard I couldn't break it never mind cut it.My meal was took away and then brought back and told another pie would be about 10 minutes. By this time my chips were just warm and the very small amount of veg was cold. When the other pie did come the crust was better but still hard and stuck to the rim of the pot. When we brought it to the managers attention we were offered a free dessert or drink which we declined. Even if everything had been OK at nearly £15 it wasn't value for money compared to other pubs in the area.We will still go there for a drink but not eat.

Really wanted this to be good, but alas. Three of us went for a treat meal. We had already seen the menu, so choices were made. Fillet steak and two fish pies. We arrived and got the table we wanted, good start. Then we were told, no steak, no fish, no fish pie. So, after some studying, we decided on, starters two tomato soup and one chicken strips. Sorry no chicken strips. So no starters for me then. Which left me as the odd one out. Mains we had two beef lasagne and one gammon steak. The gammon steak should have come with chunky chips, tomato, mushroom, onion rings and house salad. But no onion rings or house salad. Instead, there were baked beans. Nothing against baked beans, but I do not want them for a Saturday night meal out thank you. The staff tried their best but clearly not enough of them. You could tell that by the numerous ‘sorry for the wait’ comments. Nice place for a drink and handy for us. But they have to decide if they want to serve food or just play at it. It is no good having a menu if half of it is not available. We shall not be eating there again. If you have not made plans on what you want to eat and feel like taking a chance on what is available give them a go.

Finally decided to revisit after a previous bad experience under the old manager (directly related to staff incompetency issues) We arrived on a Friday evening, waited at the bar and a lady finally showed us to a table in the restaurant, gave us menus and said she would "back in a sec" to take our drinks order... 20-25 minutes later no one had appeared, said lady had appeared to have gone and her place had been taken by a young lad who appeared blissfully unaware of our (and another couples) existence. No other staff apparent. As we had not even had a drinks order taken yet (a third couple had decided to order their own from ther bar) the frustration was extremely high, and we chose to leave (followed by another couple who had been waiting even longer for their drinks) I complained to the young lad on the way out, he apologised and that was that. We headed off to the Half Moon, served straightaway and food in about 20 minutes. Rose and Crown, we gave you another chance after your abysmal performance under the previous manager and you failed again. We won't be back.

Arrived for our 7.30 booking on time. We were seated opposite the kitchen door where we could hear derogatory comments being made by the staff about diners throughout our visit. We ordered drinks the waitress hadn't a clue what beers/ciders were available and had to go check a couple of times while taking our orders. We waited 20 minutes, no drinks came. Another waitress asked us if we wanted more drinks, I told her we were still waiting on the ones we'd ordered 20 mins earlier. When ordering our food 2 of the starters we wanted were unavailable and there were no steaks of any kind either. After an hour and 10 minutes I asked the waitress to check on our mains, we over heard her asking someone in the kitchen and he replied, and I quote, "Why, are they complaining?" The waitress came out to us and said they were being plated up, we were then waiting another 10 minutes before they were served. Four of us had steak and ale pie. My plate consisted of exactly 8 skinny, under cooked chips, a tablespoon of mushy peas and the pie, which was served in a dish, mainly consisted of watery gravy and, although the filling was edible, there was only enough meat to cover the bottom of the dish. One of our party had fish and chips, the portion would have left a small child hungry. If I had had my way I would have complained there and then but other members of the party just wanted to get out of there and never return again. Needless to say we will not be returning

This has been the hub point of socialising for many many years it is absolutely agonising to see what Fine & Country Inns (FCIG) are doing to the heart of our community. After the abrupt change in management all the locals and regulars were ecstatic to see Fallon appointed as the general manger. This has been long overdue and something she has the enthusiasm and fire to do, a young fresh set of eyes and ideas. After what looked like a positive and exciting start i.e. new dishes on the specials bored, theme/entertainment nights and an outdoor area make over things soon started to seem amiss. I feel the need to write this review as seeing all the bad reviews against the staff that are there day in and day out is heart breaking not to mention seeing them actually cry on numerous occasions when disgruntled customers are shouting at them and refusing to pay, not realising their hands are tied by owning body FCIG. There has been no chef in the kitchen for a number of months, FCIG have happily let 16-18 year olds run the kitchen, hence the long wait times and standards lower than what customers rightly expect. These poor kids have been thrown under the bus with no training and are doing there absolute best under the most stressful circumstances and for no thanks or extra pay..... but they did get an appreciation certificate :/ The kitchen has even been shut for a number of weeks due to this matter sending profit to other pubs in the village, again upsetting the staff having to turn away not only new customers but also loyal customers. The menu hasn't changed in nearly a year, it's now old and boring. Previous managers and chef's have tried to spice up the menu after listening to the customers complaints and suggestions but FCIG just push back and refuse. This is shocking when you compare it to the other pubs FCIG own, such as the Parish Oven and the Shepard's Rest, their menus are worlds apart from what the Rose and Crown is given and not to mention they have trained chefs and sous chefs. FCIG please listen to your staff and your customers, if things are to carry on as they are you are going to run your staff and your pub into the ground. This would be a sad and great loss to our community, as the Rose and Crown atmosphere is so welcoming and everyone becomes friends with everyone.

Awful experience. The locals seem to think they own the place and can make visitors feel unwelcome. After a stressful week I wanted nothing more than a nice relaxing drink to de stress. We were treated appallingly by the people there who told us we couldn't sit outside as it was for them only and that we should leave. Absolutely no signage of a private function and the girl behind the bar had no clue what to say when I went inside and asked her to clarify. We endured lots of rude kids (and their parents) making remarks, sneers, threatening violence to my young kids. I've never had to endure such a situation in my entire life and the manager didn't bat an eyelid when I brought this to her attention and has ignored complaints.

Very disappointed! We ordered 1 x starter and 2 x Sunday lunches and 1hr 15mins later still had no food! There were several other diners who had been there before us and had only just been served their meals at this point. I asked how much longer the wait would be and was told that the starter would be a few minutes more and so we paid for the drinks and said that we wouldn't be staying due to how long we'd be waiting. There had been no explanation as to the reason for the delay and whilst we don't expect 'fast food' service, an hour and a quarter and no sign of food really isn't acceptable. Incidentally, the drinks bill for 2 x pints lager and 2 x lime & lemon soft drinks was £18 which we felt was a bit excessive. The staff who attended us were both very young and pleasant, but there didn't seem to be any other staff around and if there were any, they clearly couldn't have been in the kitchen judging by our wait time. It's a shame because we're fairly new to the area and like to support local businesses and potentially we could have become regular customers, but based on today's experience we won't be back I'm afraid.

Terrible experience altogether. I am not one to complain and I am extremely patient when it comes to customer service as sometimes I appreciate things don’t always go to plan. However, tonight (08/07/23) was quite possibly the worst experience my family and I have experienced. We arrived at our booking, on time which was at 7:30, we received our drinks and was chatting for a good 10 minutes or so whilst waiting for the menu. We ended up having to go and ask for a menu from one of the staff. Another 20 minutes go by as we are waiting to order our food and we get told that some of the menu is unavailable, mainly the steaks, but not to worry this happens every so often, so we placed our order with secondary choices. Skip 40 minutes or so, still no food had arrived, we asked the waitress if we could chase the food to be told it will be another 25 minutes or more. We don’t mind waiting for food but just a little over an hour for food is ridiculous and the pub was reasonably quiet for a Saturday evening. So we waited and waited until one of the managers said we are really sorry for the wait, it is now being plated up, which took another 10-15 minutes. Only for the food to come out in a terrible manner. Food was stale, overcooked and even a hair on the plate, which isn’t what you’d expect from any restaurant/pub. We also asked for condiments only to be given one small pot of ketchup between 6 of us and no way of distributing it out amongst ourselves. We simply asked for a spoon to sort this out. Whilst we was eating the rather unpleasant food, the manager came over to ourselves and asked how the food was, we answered honestly and said that it wasn’t a great experience and the food wasn’t to our expectations (not that it’s Michelin star, we know what food should taste like). She then turned around and called us incredibly rude customers who had upset the waitress. We hadn’t even spoken in any bad way to the waitress as we all understand that people can have a bad day and that she can only do what she can within her power. We retorted back that the experience had been poor and that we shouldn’t be ridiculed for telling them that they are doing a shocking job. The manager was so rude and wouldn’t even accept a Green King NHS Discount either, we gave honest feedback and we all left a birthday meal extremely deflated and disappointed. Please seriously reconsider going to this place as we wish we had gone elsewhere. Ruined a family meal out, celebrating a birthday, only to be told that we are being rude even when we hadn’t said anything is disgusting and it’s extremely atrocious to say this to paying customers. This place was a disaster and we won’t be returning.

We booked a table today for sunday lunch for 4 people including a baby. We arrived at 13.30pm orded our drinks then at same time our order was taken for food. Anyway got to 14:10pm and was still no food, baby was crying as he was hungry and wouldnt settle. I asked how long the food would take I got an answer of i will go and check. Anyway he came back told us that it was been played up and would be with us in 10-15minutes. Ok so we waited and still no food by this point the time was 14:50pm. We waited a little longer, (wouldn't have minded but the pub wasnt even busy)!! We paid for our drinks which was only 3 glasses of pop and it came up to £12 for the glasses of pop😳 and booked a table somewhere else. Wasnt just us who walked out and cancelled our booking a few coupls did the same who we also bumped into at the same pub we booked at round the corner. Never again

Ate here for an 80th birthday celebration, not to busy, 6 of us to eat. Little while to take orders. 2 starters out of 6 and mains orders taken at the same time, prompt in arrival and eating for starters. 1hour later still no main courses on the table. Only 6 People in the resturant. When the food finally arrived 1hr 45mins after ordering it was delicious and hot. Cannot fault the food at all and the value was great!! Sadly just slow service.... Would eat here again but seemed better service in small groups. Chef did come and apologise about the wait though, so that was appreciated.

Called in for a bite to eat as part of our walk in the area with friends last Saturday, no light bites on the menu and we were about to leave when the waitress said she would see what they could do. The chef provided us with a sandwich, chips and side salad, full marks to him, the waitress and the place in general.

Lovely, welcoming feel to this pub and friendly staff. Wide choice on the menu and reasonable prices. We opted for the steak ciabatta which was plentiful and very tasty, served with salad, a creamy coleslaw and chunky chips.

Not been for about 1 year. Today went for Sunday lunch. Had a drink in the bar before going to our table. Had the roast beef (pink). It was cooked to perfection and very tasty. Couldn’t fault all the accompaniments. Ordered cauliflower cheese as an extra and it was so flavoursome. Me and my husband always rate places with “if it’s better than we cook at home then it’s worth going back” and we will disunity be going back. It was a lovely dinner, I didn’t have room for a pud. All staff lovely and very friendly.
