We were glad to be seated here at 2pm on a busy Easter Friday. This was our first visit and we were pleased to find such a lovely little pub with a great atmosphere in idyllic surroundings. We ordered from the Lunchtime menu. I had fish and chips and asked for my peas to be swapped out for a salad. I wasn't charged any extra for this which was lovely as some places have charges me the price of a salad to do this. My wife had steak with chips, Which she thoroughly enjoyed. The drinks we ordered were lovely, A Madri and a Southern comfort. We ordered onion rings as a side, about 5 mins after we started to eat the kitchen remembered and apologised and took them off our bill then a few mins later a lovely big bowl of them arrived for free. The service was impeccable friendly and warm and the pub was very clean with beautiful decorations inside. I particularly loved the adjoining stone wall with the arch separating the dining rooms We are really looking forward to returning on a Wednesday and trying the evenings menu and the quiz night

Our visit to was an absolute shambles from start to finish. They’d run out of many items on the menu in spite of it being 7pm on a Saturday evening , the food took an hour and a forty minutes to arrive (despite us being the only table ordering), and when it finally did, the starters came out with the mains and nothing at all was said. Crazy. The only positive thing was the genuinely delightful and polite waitress. It was clear to see that she was embarrassed by what she was having to cover. The food was poor. The chips, halloumi and scampi were very greasy indeed and the lasagne had zero flavour. It was a complete letdown. It is rare that we would complain at all as a family but we did have to say something about the ridiculous wait time, and all they offered to take the starters off the bill, which wasn’t nearly enough. My 74-year-old father-in-law raised it with the manager, hoping for a proper conversation. Instead, the manager came over in a cap, clearly angry, and said, “I hear you have a problem.” When my father-in-law asked him to come over properly to speak to him, the manager refused and said, “No, you come over here,” in a way that was genuinely threatening. It honestly felt like he was about to start a fight - with a 74-year-old man. I would be interested to know if this guy really is the manager as the young waitress did say that they were on holiday. It was very clearly a hostile interaction with this guy. He is a first class chav! At that point, he told us to pay for our drinks and get out. We genuinely hadn’t been looking for a free meal, but when the food was that bad and the service was even worse, we weren’t exactly going to argue. We were expecting for there to be a gesture of good will made beyond that of the starters which we didn’t really eat or enjoy with them coming at the same time as the mains in particular. It was hands down the worst service I’ve ever experienced. I had my 10 year old, 14 year old, and 17-year old kids with me, along with my wife and her parents, and we were all completely shocked at how we were treated. Does this guy really think his behaviour was good in front of a family as we were. This was a birthday meal for three of us and I can’t get over how shocking it was. I wouldn’t go back if you paid me. Avoid this place; there are plenty of better pubs around that actually care about their customers. My recommendation would be to avoid!!!!!!

Absolutely shocking. Only person on the floor was elderly and seemed to be struggling as a loud mouth cook came out to try help her. We were sat under a specials board so the very few that were in were hovering above our table to look at this. Someone on the next table ordered fish finger sandwich and wasn’t happy that they were frozen fish fingers. We ordered pie and it was shocking. Obviously bought in which reminded me of fray bentos when I was younger. Gravy was like water. On leaving most of our food we were not asked how it was and also heard a table say that they had called in for lunch not dinner referring to there long wait. Avoid this place it’s not how it used to be.

This place is starting to becoming our favourite pub to go to for some quality food and welcoming atmosphere. Portions sizes are ridiculous and I don’t mean that negatively, you get your moneys worth and more, the rose and crown have really honed in on what people want from “pub grub” plenty of variety to suit all tastebuds and all brought out in a timely manner with perfection. The staff here are very attentive to your needs even when they had a party of 18/20 people in, amongst numerous other tables full, not a beat missed when they provided high quality service and food. Thank you staff of the rose and crown.

Friday 21st February 2025.... We pre-booked a table for 8 people at the Rose and Crown, Barlborough, to celebrate our elderly mum's birthday, but unfortunately, the experience was quite disappointing. Despite arriving on time, we had to wait over an hour and 20 minutes before our food arrived, and that was only after we asked twice for someone to take our order. There was another large group dining at the same time who seemed to take priority, which left us feeling somewhat neglected. When the food did finally arrive, it was just okay – nothing particularly special, especially after such a long wait. To top it off, when it came to ordering desserts, many of the options were unavailable, which further added to the letdown. Overall, it was a pretty underwhelming experience, and we were hoping for better service for a special occasion. Worst service I`ve experinced in a restaurant.

I've waited a while to write this review , as to be honest , when we visited I was absolutely aghast . But I will Start with my previous review from last summertime which was amazing, the food was just exceptional, I think it was John's wife ( from the Blue Bell Harthill ) that was cooking on that day . Fast forward to November, a really cold night , but we were greeted with a lovely warm reception and shown into the dining area, which was so nice and warm, and ordered our drinks .... That's when it all got a bit bizarre ..A lady came out of the kitchen and brought menus , and proceeded to tell us that they didn't have most things on the menu...but bizarrely she was plugging the pies , I ended up ordering lasagne, and my Partner had a pie . Both were very average and nothing like our previous visit ... but that wasn't really the issue , it was the Lady who served us that kept repeatedly telling us she has ADHD ,and her mannerism , albeit very friendly , was way too over the top and inappropriate. I need to point out that we are very friendly people , we arent stuck up or uppity in any way , but this behaviour was very strange and uncomfortable. Also , to be coming out of the kitchen shouting / singing Christmas songs isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. Please improve this pub 🙏, it's a gem , and was closed for way too long , it's got so much going for it , and I really hope that necessary improvements are made . It's not far for us to visit , I hope the feedback provided helps , the menu needs looking at , and Staff behaviour and possibly being able to " read the room " would be an advantage.

We recently booked a family gathering to celebrate my mum’s 85th birthday, and unfortunately, the service was absolutely appalling. Service was an absolute shambles. We had pre booked our table weeks in advance, only to be told service and food would take significantly longer, due to another large party, in which they called them ‘a priority’. We came here to celebrate my grandmas birthday and the service completely ruined the atmosphere. We waited 40 mins to actually order the food, with the food arriving an hour later. The food was alright, no complaints there, just a shame it took so long as clearly the other customers weren’t a priority for them. Not a pleasant experience at all.

We've eaten here before and the food was lovely, today however everything was dire, half of our meals came out, - no vegetables, the meat & roasties were cold due to the wait, when the greens did arrive they'd been boiled for so long they had no taste or texture, the fish was well... Like a fish finger! Child's meal was larger! When asked if everything was ok and we replied not really no we received no response and were then completely ignored. I must also add as there were 12 of us that we tried to pre-book the meals but they declined! Would I recommend or eat here again... Absolutely not!

A classic case of if I could give 0 stars I would. I will start by saying we were a table of 12 that booked in advance but were not asked for a pre order. I have eaten here before and had a lovely meal with great service but unfortunately this was not the case today. From sitting down at 2, we had still not been asked for a drinks order or diverted to order at the bar by 20 past. At which point we only got served as one of us went up to the bar to ask for service. Now, the food 🤦🏽‍♀️... First the 6 "Sunday roasts" were brought out which together probably just made 3 full adult meals with the wafer thin beef and crumbs of belly pork. No veg and no gravy. We were advised these came separate (not an issue, you would think) but this took over 20 minutes to materialise. In the meantime the other meals were intermittently brought out. Which leads me to the fish and chips or there lack of! The children's chicken nuggets and chips was bigger and hotter! When the veg eventually arrived I can only assume it had been sat in the boiling water the entire time we were waiting for drinks and eventually ordering our meals. When the staff came to take our plates away we were asked if everything was ok to which we clearly replied no it was not. We were met with a stoney silence and a disappearing act by the staff who removed only 2 plates. The entire experience from start to finish was a huge disappointment and put a damper on our celebration. We were ignored, forgotten and dismissed! Safe to say we will be avoiding for the foreseeable.

Extremely poor experience. Booked a table for 6 people. Arrived to be told did we mind sitting on two tables of 3. Ordered food to be told they didn’t have any pies or hamburgers in - why didn’t waitresses tell us that when menus were handed out? My wife ordered a prawn salad as her main which was basically a side dish which consisted of a small bowl of green leaves, radishes and prawns. Complained that this wasn’t a main (it was under the mains on the menu and not under light bites) so they took £3 off the price and offered some fries which were declined. Very disappointing. Won’t be eating at The Rose & Crown again.

With friends staying over and the Christmas season in full swing, we decided to embrace the festive spirit early and indulge in the Festive Fayre Menu at The Rose and Crown. Given we won’t see each other over Christmas itself, this was to be our celebratory dinner—and what a perfect choice it turned out to be. From the moment we arrived, the experience was exceptional: warm and attentive service, a beautifully set table, a cheerful atmosphere, and food that truly exceeded expectations. The starters alone were a triumph, showcasing both quality and generosity. The pork belly was tender and flavourful, while the chicken liver pâté was a delight—smooth, rich, and perfectly paired. The garlic mushrooms were equally impressive, delivering that creamy garlicky flavour you’d hope for. For the mains, a standout moment was the festive pie, brimming with hearty filling and served alongside perfectly cooked seasonal vegetables. A choice of sides—from mashed potatoes to roasties or chunky chips—was offered, and the chips proved a hit: golden, crisp, and satisfying. One of our friends declared the pie “gorgeous”. The majority of us opted for the traditional turkey with all the trimmings, and it did not disappoint. The turkey itself was expertly cooked—succulent, moist, and free of even a hint of dryness. Accompanied by perfectly roasted potatoes, creamy mash, crispy Yorkshire puddings, stuffing, pigs in blankets, parsnips, and impeccably prepared vegetables, this dish was a festive delight. By the end, we were all undeniably stuffed. And yet, after a brief respite, two of us managed to rally for dessert—a beautiful cheeseboard that was as visually striking as it was delicious. A thoughtful selection of cheeses, crackers, and accompaniments made for the perfect ending to an already exceptional meal. In every way, The Rose and Crown delivered a memorable Christmas dinner experience, made even more special by their attention to detail and commitment to quality. To the wonderful staff: thank you for helping us create an early festive celebration we won’t soon forget.

Dreadful experience in what can only be described at best as a village pub. The food was shocking and very very limited with several of the items on the menu ' unavailable '.... the special pie - deer & beer - was served to me stone cold so it was returned to the kitchen, microwaved, and given back to me. Microwaving pastry and chips (as EVERYONE knows) made them soggy and inedible. The best thing about the meal is the mushy peas, they were at least green ( cold until microwaved also).Several others said there food was awful and the service inadequate with just one girl running around. We were a party of 12 , some travelling from Scotland and some from the east coast first a long awaited family reunion and all I can say is that the Rose & Crown should not be classified as having a restaurant as they were more concerned about the pub quiz and their food foul !!!Despite what the response was, as stated, one staff member took our drinks order, then once all seated, she proceeded to go through the list of items that were unavailable . After being given food, some had almost finished when others were getting theres, the next time anyone checked on us was when I complained about mine. I asked to see the manager and she apologised quickly. Next contact was with the waitress who said my inedible slop had been refunded and then she tried to sort payment, some being charged twice and getting a refund 5 days later !! Inefficiency at it finest !

The portions on every dish were plentiful and tasted great and compliments to the chef for what theyre producing in the kitchen. Finally the price, a 3 course meal for around £20 is fantastic value and given the high level of service and food this really is a great pub we hope to one day return to.

At last this place finally has that lovely feeling of a proper village pub, all thanks to the new landlady Lynne and her team who have clearly worked hard to put this pub back on the right track. I go in with my son most Sunday afternoons and i have to say it’s a joy sitting in the lovely beer garden which has been vastly improved more so than previous owners in years gone by. I haven’t tried the food yet but from what I’ve seen it looks really good and i like the idea of introducing a tapas menu at very reasonable prices. The atmosphere inside the bar and in the beer garden is great and everyone seems to be enjoying the pub.Well done Lynne and team, wishing you all the success you clearly deserve , may it long continue.

Corporate Buffet Lunch Review. For our recent corporate board meeting, we opted for a buffet lunch, and the entire team was unanimously impressed by the presentation, quality, and taste. Every part was freshly homemade, showcasing an admirable attention to detail and culinary finesse. The Mediterranean pasta salad was a delightful blend of flavors and textures, setting a high standard right from the start. The sandwich fillings were equally impressive, with the coronation chicken wraps standing out as a particular highlight—rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The pork apple and sage sausage rolls were a hit, offering a savoury burst of taste. Even the tortillas and dips, often overlooked components, were prepared with care and precision, enhancing the overall experience. What truly sets this service apart is its ability to cater to all tastes and dietary needs, ensuring everyone finds something to enjoy. In summary, I would highly recommend this buffet for any corporate or private event. The Rose and Crown has truly excelled in providing a seamless and satisfying experience.

This is one of our local pubs and been here often for a drink with friends and the occasional meal. This was the first time we have been for a meal since the reopening and was really disappointed. I ordered the steak pie but had to send it back because the crust was rock hard I couldn't break it never mind cut it.My meal was took away and then brought back and told another pie would be about 10 minutes. By this time my chips were just warm and the very small amount of veg was cold. When the other pie did come the crust was better but still hard and stuck to the rim of the pot. When we brought it to the managers attention we were offered a free dessert or drink which we declined. Even if everything had been OK at nearly £15 it wasn't value for money compared to other pubs in the area.We will still go there for a drink but not eat.

Really wanted this to be good, but alas. Three of us went for a treat meal. We had already seen the menu, so choices were made. Fillet steak and two fish pies. We arrived and got the table we wanted, good start. Then we were told, no steak, no fish, no fish pie. So, after some studying, we decided on, starters two tomato soup and one chicken strips. Sorry no chicken strips. So no starters for me then. Which left me as the odd one out. Mains we had two beef lasagne and one gammon steak. The gammon steak should have come with chunky chips, tomato, mushroom, onion rings and house salad. But no onion rings or house salad. Instead, there were baked beans. Nothing against baked beans, but I do not want them for a Saturday night meal out thank you. The staff tried their best but clearly not enough of them. You could tell that by the numerous ‘sorry for the wait’ comments. Nice place for a drink and handy for us. But they have to decide if they want to serve food or just play at it. It is no good having a menu if half of it is not available. We shall not be eating there again. If you have not made plans on what you want to eat and feel like taking a chance on what is available give them a go.

Awful service from moment we walked in, couldn’t get in the door for a couple smoking, staff running around but no one took notice of us. Eventually welcomed (well sort of by a young lad). Menuda offered - then 1/2 menu unavailable. Restaurant not busy, only one couple ordered before us and then took 50min with no apology. We’re local and highly disappointed, won’t be back for food. And not again for drinks if smokers hanging around at the door.

This place has a great selection of beers and a lpvy village pub atmosphere. I'm glad it's finally reopened. The food, a burger, was OK. It wasn't bad but just felt a bit cheap. The bread bun especially was possibly on the turn and couldve done with being toasted on the inside. Service is always lovely, polite and helpful. Wait time for food on this occasion was fine as we were the only ones eating. Would always go back for a pint, but this isn't the pub I go to for food.

Finally decided to revisit after a previous bad experience under the old manager (directly related to staff incompetency issues) We arrived on a Friday evening, waited at the bar and a lady finally showed us to a table in the restaurant, gave us menus and said she would "back in a sec" to take our drinks order... 20-25 minutes later no one had appeared, said lady had appeared to have gone and her place had been taken by a young lad who appeared blissfully unaware of our (and another couples) existence. No other staff apparent. As we had not even had a drinks order taken yet (a third couple had decided to order their own from ther bar) the frustration was extremely high, and we chose to leave (followed by another couple who had been waiting even longer for their drinks) I complained to the young lad on the way out, he apologised and that was that. We headed off to the Half Moon, served straightaway and food in about 20 minutes. Rose and Crown, we gave you another chance after your abysmal performance under the previous manager and you failed again. We won't be back.

We enjoyed a delightful Mother’s Day dinner, promptly seated at our table with a complimentary glass of Prosecco—a thoughtful touch. The meal was served swiftly, and the food was absolutely fantastic. As a lover of beef, I was so so pleased that it was served to order, perfectly pink as I prefer. The option of medium cooked also catered to everyone's tastes on our table. For dessert, we indulged in delicious lemon meringue and Oreo cheesecake. Beautiful! The staff, both at the bar and in the restaurant, were incredibly accommodating and friendly. Their attentiveness added to the overall experience. And of course a massive thank you to the behind the scenes staff, head chef Aron and his team did a brilliant job. Thank you for making Mother’s Day that much more special.

Arrived for our 7.30 booking on time. We were seated opposite the kitchen door where we could hear derogatory comments being made by the staff about diners throughout our visit. We ordered drinks the waitress hadn't a clue what beers/ciders were available and had to go check a couple of times while taking our orders. We waited 20 minutes, no drinks came. Another waitress asked us if we wanted more drinks, I told her we were still waiting on the ones we'd ordered 20 mins earlier. When ordering our food 2 of the starters we wanted were unavailable and there were no steaks of any kind either. After an hour and 10 minutes I asked the waitress to check on our mains, we over heard her asking someone in the kitchen and he replied, and I quote, "Why, are they complaining?" The waitress came out to us and said they were being plated up, we were then waiting another 10 minutes before they were served. Four of us had steak and ale pie. My plate consisted of exactly 8 skinny, under cooked chips, a tablespoon of mushy peas and the pie, which was served in a dish, mainly consisted of watery gravy and, although the filling was edible, there was only enough meat to cover the bottom of the dish. One of our party had fish and chips, the portion would have left a small child hungry. If I had had my way I would have complained there and then but other members of the party just wanted to get out of there and never return again. Needless to say we will not be returning
