We used to visit occasionally more out of convenience than anything else. Since the new team have taken over we go regularly- only for a drink so far- but will try food when we get the chance. The pub is clean, warm, comfortable and very friendly, nice unobtrusive music to give atmosphere, and sky in the bar area which doesn’t encroach on the wider pub. Much much better than it was, and recommended!!

The reviews say it all, I thought not to review or say anything but from reading these reviews about the bald guy, then 100% agree he is a bully, rude and aggressive and can only agree with the review about him and his wife (landlady I think) being drunk! As a local to this pub, I frequently visit with my family for food and drinks; however, since the new management have taken over, everytime I have visited the landlords have been very confrontational. They are always drunk and cause a lot of issues with the locals and then use their “power” to bar customers for issues they have caused themselves. Extremely unprofessional and should not be allowed to manage pubs at all, they clearly have issues with alcohol. I have never experienced such chauvinistic attitude in my life from the landlord. I will not be returning and I’m sure many of the locals will agree!

The Rope & Anchor Woolston Disgusting landlord 945384544 Treated absolutely disgustingly by a bald guy who works there, who we assume is the new landlord. We arrived bang on 7:30pm for our teams football game. The area on the left was packed with no seats to watch the football so we looked for other screens. There was a tele on the right showing the game with a free table in front of it. We sit down to watch the game and my brother goes the bar to get the first round in. Meanwhile this bald guy comes over and turns the tv off in quite an aggressive way. I walk up to him and say excuse me mate are you not showing the football on that tv? He says no this is the restaurant area we can’t have it on in here. I said well it was just on as we walked in and my brothers gone the bar to get drinks. My brother catches wind of the situation and says we’ll have to go to another pub then as we’re only here to watch the football. He points to the packed sports area and says go watch it in there. We said there’s nowhere to sit and he points at a young couples table and says sit on there with them! We obviously weren’t going to intrude on a couples night like that. My brother proposed he pays for his drink and takes it with him as it was still in the bottle and the landlord says you can shove it up your arse and pours it down the sink and says you’re both barred. This guy should be nowhere near the hospitality sector and is going to run this place into the ground. Quite comfortably the most rude arrogant obnoxious member of staff I’ve ever experienced in my 25 years of going out to eat or drink. We are both local lads who have been coming here all our lives with my younger brother playing for the rope & anchor football team for 10 years. The disrespect is on another level.

Visited the rope and anchor for almost a week whilst staying at the local premier inn. We were made to feel really welcomed and the staff ensured we got a table each night even though it was really busy due to the “eat out to help out” scheme. The food on each night was great. The portions are huge and each dish was hot and freshly made. Will be returning on my next work trip in September!

I booked this for my son, brother and their business colleague not knowing the area but had wanted something close to the local Premier Inn because they had driven for almost four hours, so I didn't want them to travel too far afterwards. I had searched for reviews beforehand and there wasn't one negative review for this pub and rightly so. Even though one of the guests arrived after they had stopped serving food, they were kind enough to put a meal together, something they didn't have to do. The quality of the food was excellent. My son is a vegetarian and whilst there were only a few options, it was beautiful - I was aware of the limited vegetarian options beforehand so it wasn't a surprise. The food and service was so good, a table was booked again for the second night they were there.

Visited on a Sunday. Arrived at 12pm opening time. Ordered drinks at the bar & asked them gentleman behind the bar if they were serving food. They were. He said he’d bring menus over to us. After waiting ten more minutes the menus didn’t arrive so we got up & found them ourselves. We ordered 1 chicken Sunday dinner & 1 steak & onion baguette with blue cheese topping & chips. Both meals arrived well presented. The Sunday lunch was ok. Not the best by far as it was only just wasn’t, but it did the job. More veg & more potatoes would have been nice. It arrived with just 1 massive roast potato on the plate. The baguette was lovely. No food check back to see if food was ok. Venue was clean & tidy.

Am afraid I always have the mexicana burger because it's so good, as are the chips that come with it, but must remember to ask for it to be plated otherwise it comes on one of those annoying boards. The burger is so juicy that it drips, so a plate would be far more suited as standard.

Came here after a recommendation from a friend. Generally food and service were good. We asked for one of the burgers to be fully cooked through as my wife is pregnant and unfortunately they cooked the other budget the same way. My friend asked for the fish with risotto but no risotto was on her plate when it arrived. They took it away and when the brought it back, we had finished our mains. Good and bad I suppose. The said that their kitchen staff hasn't realised that the menus changed and that the fish includes risotto. The best thing is probably the atmosphere. Other families here and people enjoying themselves on a dry summers day. The children enjoyed playing out on the grass and small outdoor play frame. Shame the car park is not a bit more segregated from the play area. Need to keep a very close eye on the children playing.

The Rope & Anchor is our local pub & caters for a wide variety of customers. We regularly have a post dog-walk drink in the beer garden. Today we opted to have a late lunch and we were both pleasantly surprised. The food at the Rope has always been okay for standard pub fare. But the new menu has lots of choice, with one of our fave starters (pigs in blankets) and a good array of grill & main courses. This is not your top end restaurant and doesn't pretend to be. It's a great pub, with tasty food and good service.... and all for decent value for money. We got two good sized starters, two mains from the grill and side salad with four glasses of wine ... £55. We settled on the cosy lunch menu & ordered the mini pigs in blankets, sausage & mash then had the waffle & ice-cream for dessert. The menu stated mini pigs in blankets so it was quite a surprise when 6 large chipolatas came out, the portion size was great as was the presentation and garnish. We visit this pub several times a year. The trouble we have is that you just don't know what you're going to get. The service can be excellent or non existent, there really is no half way house and theres no explanation as to why. Its certainly not due to how busy it is. The food is actually quite good although if you choose a pie you may be told that it will take forty five minutes to arrive, sometime it does others just twenty. Either way cant a pub predict that on a cold Sunday there may be customers who might want something off the menu. We've been some of the first diners so its not that they have run out, simply poorly managed!Moan over, when this place is on song its an excellent place to go and eat, particularly on a sunny day where you can sit outside and eat. If they could sort their front of house out to a consistent level it really would be first choice every time.

We've dined and drank at the Rope and Anchor in Woolston ever since we moved here in 1984 and we've seen restoration after redecoration after change of ownership. We didn't know yesterday, when we callef in for lunch, that the pub had changed hands again the day before. For years we have been trying to get the incumbants to increase the number of gluten free options on their menus, just to give my Coeliac wife a fighting chance at something other than gammon and pineapple. One of the friendly staff sympathetic to my wife's needs, as we walked in, descended on us enthusiastically with the new menu, following the take-over, for us to examine. It was rife with GF options. So, thank you Rope and Anchor's new owners for your consideration. Meals we ordered were delightful, albeit a little more expensive, well cooked and all from fresh food. My wife now jokingly complains of too much choice. Now, I have to see if the new owners can restore to the menu my favourite meal,, All day breakfast!

As a break from the extortionate and disappointing hotel food, I hit the road. This place was chosen based on a client's recommendation. Very easy to find. There were two members on the bar to help out and helpful they were too. I'd seen the menu online and my order was in my head ... please don't tell me you have run out !!! Luckily both items were available and were ordered. Lancashire Hot Pot and a bottle of wine. Both together fitted within my allowed expenses limit, happy days.I have a fond childhood memory of hot pot, my nana used to make it for me. She used to live several years ago on Liverpool Road in Eccles which is literally down the road from this pub. Out it came. I don't care if this started life in some mass manufacturing freezer plant because whoever made it, go it right. There were particles of meat bits thickening up the gravy and lovely chunks of lamb and carrot under the layer of potatoes. Every so often a pickled onion would be picked from the side dish to take a break. The idea of having bread to mop up the gravy was well intentioned but I did have to ask for a spoon to get to the last luscious drop.OK, the hot pot was nice :)

Heard a lot about the food and thought we would try for ourselves as Warrington were playing so was a good opportunity. The food was delicious and service was excellent. Well Done 'Rope and Anchor' Great Job!

Called in while on business in the area. The place is very popular and was packed at 6pm on Sunday evening.Service was very slow. A dance troop had come in just before us and were ordering and paying 1 at a time. Not the pubs fault. We had pate which came in a Kilner jar and 2 of the smallest pieces of warm bread ever. Asked for some more but was told the chef didn't like to give more. Said I was happy to pay and one more tiny peace came out.Pate was fine.Had mixed grill for main course, most of it was ok apart from the sausages .They could do with more than one food ordering point and an extra chef.We had to wait over 15 mins to order and an hour for food to arrive.

Biggest problem with this place is the sad lack of staff. Ask about drinks, give you a menu and go away. We had to go to the bar to see if anybody was ever going to take our main meal order. Food was ordinary for the money charged. After a long wait they took our plates away and we had desert menus. After 15 minutes nobody came anywhere near our table to take an order so we got up, went to the bar and paid. NEVER AGAIN at this place.

I went to this pub years ago as it is my local (before Lees bought it - BIG MISTAKE by Lees??).Everything about this pub then was BAD.I gave it a miss for 3-4 years, tried it again - no better.Lees bought it and I love JW'S beers so I was delighted and hoped for drastic changes..My euphoria lasted until I tried it again......NOTHING HAD CHANGED except GOOD BEER is now served badly.I have not been back since.I don't see this pub getting any CAMRA awards. My advice?Go to the Dog and Partridge, same road, three quarters of a mile towards Warrington centre.

We used to frequent the Rope and Anchor a lot, before it was modernised and it was a lovely place to go, family orientated and always welcoming and accommodating, However, since the place has had a makeover it has not been quite the same. It's not as warm and friendly, we had on visit where this was the case. The last time we went, it wasn't busy yet we were told it would be a long wait for food, despite there being many tables free. We asked could we not just eat at one of the taller tables, as we didn't want a banquet just a few snack type dishes, only to be told, "Oh we can't use those tables for eating off!" So they would rather lose custom than serve at a different table, We decided to have a drink before we went to look for another eating place and the barman had his back to us, doing little jobs behind the bar, (there was nobody else waiting to be served or actually being served) and yet he didn't even look round to see us. We waited a good few minutes and then left in disgust, telling the girls who worked there why. We won't be going back there in a rush. The way it's set out now is too sterile looking, too formal, it does not feel as friendly anymore these days. Much preferred it the old way. Sorry.

Went for a chill out lunch with my sister. Very good service. Very nice food and at a reasonable price. We have used this pub a few times for our halfway stop point when strolling with our group. Only downside is they are not dog freindly so if weather bad you have to sit outside under an umbrella.Yet they have an undercover outside area that is used for functions. Perhaps during the winter months this could be open to the walkers with dogs?

From walking in the door to leaving, the manageress and her team looked after our family gathering. The service was fantastic, the food was hot and most defiantly home made.Glad most of us left room for desserts, they finished what was a lovely meal. The restaurant was immaculate, and the pub stunning. We came before Christmas and couldn't fault that visit too.Thank you again, and we will most definitely see you again.

The girl that served us was lovely, the manager needs a personality transplant!! Definitely should not be front facing. Face like thunder with an awful attitude

Went here for Sunday dinner, service was a little slow but the food was excellent. Nice selection for the roast dinner and a small but varied menu as well. Nice selection of Holt's beer too.

I visited on the way home from work hoping to catch the football. Having visited in the day previously I had noticed a bar area with a pool table and fruit machines, I assumed there would also be a television. I noted that when I came in tonight, no TV, no music, no atmosphere... No point! No wonder the place was quiet except a few random couples. Not that is a bad place, the beer is good, service adequate and it's clean. Just needs some sort of atmosphere in an evening.

We visited mid-week and it was not too busy. We were able to order drinks quickly and we ordered food at the bar. We only ordered the liver and bacon and had the small portions. The liver was rather tough and the peas were a little hard but the whole meal was tasty. The mash was nice and smooth and the onion gravy was good. There is free Wi-Fi and that is a bonus. They do have sports TV and there is a bar with pool and darts.

I have to admit that I've dined here quite a lot over the last year or so and more than once, I have decided to pack in going due to bad service and poor meals. However, it is conveniently close to home, serves a 2 for £12 menu and has Lee's cask conditioned ales on the hand pump.I have no idea whether it is currently under new management or whether things have recently just improved, but this week, I watched in admiration as the staff handed out food to a crowded lounge as well as catering for an assortment of meals requested by a group of 12, all wishing to eat together. In the past,I've had an all day breakfast that took nearly all day to produce, gammon with an inch and a half edging of fat and fried eggs that looked as though they were cooked with a kitchen blow torch. The menu is still short on gluten-free items, but my Coeliac wife has a few favourites that she can choose from and the kitchen staff know what we are talking about. It's a shame that very few of the products bought in by the kitchen as sauces, etc., are suitable for a Coeliac. However, regardless of how many times I've had my doubts, I've currently returned to well prepared and tasty dishes, not to mention cask ale.

Very nice evening spent at Nandos in the town centre. The staff were all very attentive. The food was really good and presented well. The place looks great and really clean. We will definitely be back soon.

Last few fried eggs bathed in grease and chef/staff came out with bowl of fresh eggs and poured them on top of the older ones along with extra grease. Toby should have a serving container with a draining bottom like others use. It is very offputting. Husband thought the eggs were lovely to eat though. Also toast prep area too small - needs a 2nd machine at least as too slow on a busy Sunday morning. Staff friendly

Not to previous standard. 2 x order/service errors. Food was lukewarm ((left standing?). Spoke to waitress - no apology and a rather couldn’t care less response!

Fabulous Sunday lunch. Some had Beef and others had Turkey. Meets were fabulous. Lots of gravy and only slight negative was roast potatoes were hard to cut. Deserts fabulous too.
