Loved this place. Great for either take away or eating in. I could honestly have tried everything on the menu..it all looked so fresh and healthy. Such a refreshing change from the chain restaurants!

Popped in for a quick coffee going by reviews and glad I chose to. Very homely and comfortable with a nice pleasant ambience . Very helpful chap serving at the till. Settled in the end with a banana cake from a wide variety of choices - which was delicious. The coffee that accompanied it really was 10/10

A regular for us. The staff are friendly, fun and helpful. The best bowl of porridge in town with lots of options. The fruit and veg boxes are as fresh as you can get, much better than the supermarket and the takeaway options are always tasty and varied. Their tagines for dinner are amazing, with so much flavour I have stopped making them myself. Highly recommended!

Tuve un curry de garbanzos muy sabroso y una ensalada de champiñones y frijoles (para llevar). No soy vegetariano y tal vez me hubiera saltado estos si mi esposa no hubiera recomendado este lugar. La comida estaba tan llena de sabor y realmente agradable y fresca. Definitivamente lo recomiendo.

Was on a training course in Edinburgh and wanted to get a quick healthy lunch. Arrived at Roots around half 12 in the afternoon and it was fairly busy between people sat down and people at the takeaway but my order was taken within a few minutes. Very good choice with a create your own salad bar, daily specials, hot soup, sandwiches/filled rolls and cakes/pastries. A lot of vegan and dairy free options. I had a filled roll and the daily special which cost around £2 and £4.50 respectively. Very good price for the amount of food I got and it kept me full until dinner time. The food itself tasted fresh and full of flavour. Staff were very friendly and asked if i would like the vegan or dairy free option of the daily special I got. Have already recommended Roots to my friends and family and will definitely be back anytime i’m in Edinburgh.

The chef, the owner, the staff all put so much love into this place. Such a glorious selection of fresh and healthy food and yes, it is exiting to see and taste from the daily salad bar...! To be honest, this place has all you could want - also exciting drinks and sweets - vegan alert!!

I actually go out of my way to visit this Deli, it’s that good. It’s more than the quality of the food, it’s the attention to detail - from the top quality service to the clear environmental conscience, and the provenance of food on offer. A clear favourite of many. I can definitely see why.

We visit Roots regularly because it’s exactly the kind of cafe that every neighbourhood should be lucky enough to have. The food is fresh and delicious, with lots of options for people with allergies or restricted diets. The salads and cakes are incredible, and the vegan mac and cheese has to be tried to be believed. Very friendly, welcoming staff and no single-use plastic. Perfect!

I love the coffee and cakes at roots and am a particular fan of their coconut latte. Recently I can’t get passed the loaded baked sweet potato which is great comfort food! The staff are super friendly and helpful too. A gem in the West End!

A wonderfully cheerful wee place, very chilled and relaxed, with fantastic coffee and the mac and cheese was so good I forgot to get a picture! Would highly recommend trying this place if you find yourself in the area for lunch

Couldn't recommend Roots highly enough!! They catered for a family brunch party at my parents home last week and it was fabulous. Gorgeous salads, amazing puddings & all the little details thought of. Would highly recommend.

Staff super- very helpful and friendly. Service very slow due to it being busy and unfortunately I was underwhelmed by the granola bowl. It was a small portion and expensive - would have expected more to it. Smoothie was good.

My friend and I had most fabulous lunch here a few days ago and I am still thinking about it! The staff were absolute dreams - so openly treating everyone with such warmth and friendliness in a lovely homey, relaxed atmosphere. And the FOOD. The food was incredible. I had the large salad bowl and it was amazing. So fresh and delicious! Felt like I was nourishing my soul as well as my body! My friend had one of the bagels and loved it too. Will 1000% be back here soon.

I feel like I exude health and wellness after lunching at Roots! A wonderful selection of good healthy vegetables prepared in a manner that means I actually enjoy curried cauliflower, couscous and all the veg that I might not usually go for. Cat & team work very hard to look after customers and keep up to date by introducing a variety of good wholesome vegan and gluten free options. If you are health conscious, then this is the place to go. Thankfully for me is it 2 minutes from my work. I particularly enjoy the mushroom codyceps coffee if I’m passing in the morning. Roots are ahead of the curve when it comes to healthy eating, kid and dog friendly too. What more could you want.

Basically the best coffee in Edinburgh! They also do these dinky wee filled rolls that go well with one of their unique yummy soups. Vegan friendly +++ and perfect for someone like me who is allergic to loads of stuff cuz everything has been made by them from scratch!

This little cafe hidden on William St. in Edinburgh, is beautiful, its staff are always so welcoming and warm, the food is always fantastic. My friends and I all rate this cafe and the staff highly.

There is nothing not to like about Roots. First of all the staff are lovely, they are passionate about what they do and the service is excellent. I love the food, especially the soups and salads. I usually visit on my own but have also been in with my kids and was made to feel so welcome. There are highchairs, kids cutlery and plates and baby changing facilities. If you are looking for a relaxed, cosy, welcoming cafe for a delicious lunch or breakfast in the west end - this it it.

I love the sense of community in this dog, child and vegan friendly cafe. The owners and staff care so much about their food and customers happiness it's really heart warming. The little touches like flavoured water, and the fact they have *THREE* soups on each and every day I think is remarkable. A gem of the west end and well worth a visit if you're passing, it's right behind shandwick place. I recommend heading in before or after lunch hour rush to secure your spot on the comfy sofa!

Serving the best coconut lattes, yummiest of soups and the best selection of delicious salads in Edinburgh, Roots is my absolute fave! I think I must come about 4 times per week so it really is my home from home! Cat, Mark and her team are the best bunch, so friendly and attentive and Roots has become a little community hub where everyone knows each other which is really lovely. Cat and Mark are always mixing up the menu to keep it interesting and I adore the bit sized little cakes so you never feel guilty having some sweetness with your coffee! Well done Team Roots you’ve got something so special! We love you!

This was a nice little coffee stop for my friend and I one early May lunchtime. The interior is quite small but the space is utilised effectively and efficiently, although having to share a table is likely during the usual times such as lunchtime.

Cosy relaxed cafe with vegan and vegetarian snacks and soup, all very tasty and healthy. Cakes and coffees and a variety of teas to choose from. Friendly staff.

Firstly the service is above and beyond, proper hospitality. The food is excellent and reflected in the price. I highly recommend. I return again and again.

We had breakfast here on the final morning of our stay in a local holiday rental. The welcome was very friendly and the food very tasty. We were perhaps a little underwhelmed with the size of the portions for the price we paid, but all the food and drink was of good quality. We would definitely consider a re-visit in the future for another meal.

Love love love roots and the super friendly staff... They are THE most important St dog friendly place I know infact the dogs are remembered by name.....they do the most amazing Vegan mac n cheese and there salads are so fresh.... Second to none the best all round cafe.....❤️

This is a great place. The food is healthy and lots of choice for the salad box. Really tasty food. I didn't try a smoothie -maybe next time. I really like that you can buy a tub to use again - I did and I will be back! Great to eat a healthy lunch, while helping the environment and a local small business. Win-win-win!

This hidden gem is a perfect place to find food which is healthy. They have a variety of salads, soups and rolls! Also delicious vegan cakes. I love coming back. Why not supporting local businesses instead of Starbucks and Costa? Oh and try their coffee...they use delicious coffee beans!

I'd like to leave a note for anyone who has been enjoying the Edinburgh Festival to excess. If you have a hangover, go to roots. What you want to order is a something sweet, something caffeinated, a chia pot and then tackle the salad bar. I have never recovered so quickly without the use of painkillers.

Varied, interesting salad bar which keeps this big laddie going till dinner. The hummus, sriracha pinto beans and anything incorporating cider vinegar are particular favourites (although still believe quinoa is an elaborate practical joke....but won't hold that against them).

Delicious coffee and lovely fresh food. Friendly staff, great atmosphere and I love their focus on ethics and community. Highly recommended!

We popped in to Roots yesterday morning just to get a coffee to go. The service was great! Sometimes if you're just popping into a place for coffee, you don't really get service but you can't say that about Roots!

Roots is the best cafe for fresh and healthy food for either on the go or to sit in and enjoy! The staff are so friendly and helpful when choosing what delicious food to have! There is a wide array of different veggie, vegan and GF options and as their slogans states, it won’t cost the earth! Even if you’re not after some food, the coffee is some of the best I’ve had in edinburgh ! 100% would recommend! This place will go far!

One of the nicest deli and salad bars in Edinburgh. Freshly prepared healthy food with some of the most original offerings on a menu you will find. The staff are incredibly friendly and passionate about the food they serve. All local sourced ingredients are used. And the mushroom bullet coffee is an early morning must. Great place to sit and relax with friends or to just nip in pick up a scrumptious salad box and smoothy.

Stopped in to grab a coffee that isn’t from one of the big chains and ended up stopping in every day for 2 weeks! Not only is their coffee delicious but they always have a selection of gluten free/ dairy free treats that are really good. They also do sandwiches but the star of the place is the salads and stews. Made fresh every day, and the variety is awesome. They are also environmentally conscious and all their take away containers are plant based and reusable. Also they do a neat idea for suppers, they will sell you all the ingredients and give you directions on how to make the meal that are very easy to follow. I tried it out for a meal with friends and we loved it. I will be going back to Roots the next time I am in Edinburgh.

Roots is hands-down the nicest deli in Edinburgh! Its food is healthy, hearty and delicious! The food is always fresh and Roots provides many vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options at affordable prices. My favourite dishes from the seasonal menu include the delicious soups and the variety of options in the salad bar. The sweet treats are fantastic too - the carrot cake and vegan meringues (yes vegan!!!) are a must-try alongside a tasty cup of coffee. The atmosphere is always warm and friendly, and this is down to the passionate, dedicated owners and friendly staff. I also love how this place is conscious about its impact on the environment. The cafe only uses biodegradable packaging and offers discounts to customers who bring in their own coffee cups or salad boxes. To top it all off, Roots is dog-friendly too! Need I say more? Get yourself down to Roots and support this deserving independent business. You won't regret it.

Always super friendly staff and delicious food. Whether i am popping in for a lunch time salad box or the gluten free banana bread as a mid morning pick me up, all produce is fresh and really tasty. Love that they use biodegradable packaging and are #plasticfree too!

Roots is my absolute favourite place for lunch in Edinburgh. Cat and the team are so friendly and welcoming and they love dogs so it’s perfect to bring your furry pals! The menu is varied every day and as a vegetarian there is always so much choice and their vegan sweet treats are delicious! Love this place! Definitely go visit! Xx

I was looking for somewhere to grab some lunch before catching the tram. I was about to go into a well know lunch stop when I saw Roots. I like to support independent business' so thought I'd give it a try.

We visited for lunch and received a warm welcome from the moment we arrived. The food was well prepared, tasty and good value for money. The home made soup was especially good as was the coffee.

Stumbled across Roots having come off a very windy flight. Such a warm and friendly welcome, and perfect granola breakfast to settle my tummy! Menu options all very tempting.

Stylová kavárna. Skvělá snídaně z kvalitních surovin. Krásné misky a hrníčky, milovníci barev si přijdou na své. Na výběr je hodně možností. Slané i sladké varianty. Kaše mi chutnala moc, takhle akorát hustou ji doma nikdy nemůžu udělat. :-)

I've just moved office to the West End and was looking for a place that could cater for my gluten and dairy free diet. Somebody recommended Roots so I popped in today. I found the staff incredibly helpful. Enjoyed a lovely smoked salmon salad and delicious banana loaf. Gluten free free bread is available for sandwiches. Highly recommend it.

A great wee spot for lunch, snacks and general food on the go. An amazing selection, changing daily but with returning specials and favourites. The salad bar and soups are all great. Such a good addition to the Edinburgh eatery scene - well done Roots!

I’ve lived in Edinburgh 3 years and I decided to come back to the city just to visit some friends of mine so I decided to bring them to this deli/salad bar cause I knew was something special! Cat, the owner, is just a great as the place! You can find whatever you want from yogurt to smoothie to stew or soup! Everything healthy and yummy! And if you are vegan or dairy free or celiac, that is defenetly your place! I def recomend this place for a coffee or a lunch break! Don’t miss it!

Every time I come in here I never want to stop putting food in my mouth. I eat till I burst. I visit Roots twice a week, sometimes more and I have NEVER been disappointed. Staff are a joy to be with, the vibe is comfortable for everyone and their food is absolutely to die for. Sometimes I wish they'd not make EVERYTHING so delicious so I could stop myself eating enough for a family of seven. All in all, favourite place ever.

I've visited this place at all times of the day. Lovely, friendly atmosphere and since I have tried breakfast, lunch and then coffee in the afternoon, I can highly recommend.

Althought I´m no vegetarian, I went there once by mistake... and right now I think that is the best mistake I have made in my life. The whole place looks amazing, the staff was so friendly and the food... I had soup and a bite. Perfect. Absolutely perfect. Yummy! I´ll do the same mistake again and again every time I´ll be close.
