Mixed feelings about this place. We finally found the lift from the Foodcourt. We were disappointed with the views of Sports direct, WH Smith etc however the vibe, music and staff were class. As discussed in a previous review of ‘Above’, if this place had the view it would get 5 stars. If ‘Above’ had the ambience and organisation of Roof 39 it might get 4 stars. I suppose you’ve got to do both. Go to Sora, Malmaison in York if you want the full package.

Wife & I were in Fenwicks so decided to try their new Roof Thirty Nine. Not a single sign for it anywhere or directions so eventually had to ask a member of staff. Found the entrance left & greeted by a lady asking if I’d booked a table. Upon me saying no she rang upstairs to check if they had availability & told me someone would greet me upstairs. I went to push the button for the lift but almost got told off! Bearing in mind there’s only one entrance - the lift - and she was there at the entrance I was a bit startled to find only 2 other people in the place. Surely she didn’t need to ring to check availability, she’d have seen… Anyway, we were greeted, taken to a table & given a drinks menu as well as a small food menu. The place is nicely done out, comfy chairs, nice canopies but the views sadly are mainly of air con units on other stores roof tops. We had been interested in some lunch but all they had on the menu was a charcuterie board, a cheese board and one other thing which escapes me. Plus our server then told us they’d run out of bread! Disappointed, we thought ok we’ll just have a drink. My wife drinks brandy but couldn’t see it on the menu so I asked if they had it. Eventually came back & said no - but suggested I could try their other restaurants in the store. We left. And went to a proper restaurant.

No one is managing this place which is a shame. It’s doesn’t have sweeping views of the city but its nice to have a place where you can sit outside year round. The staff were on the whole pretty friendly and courteous with the exception of the lady who mans the entrance to the lift in the food-hall. We are paying customers who booked months ago so pressing the lift button ourselves ought not to be a crime. On a Saturday lunchtime we waited over 45 minutes to get bread with our sharing boards. It comes from the food hall apparently, i offered to pop down and bring it up myself. Stick to the cocktail bar on the ground floor at Fenwicks. This was an exceptional experience.

Can’t recommend. Yes, it’s got views of the city but the views are of Aircon units. Overpriced menu with no options for lunch. Service was poor and so slow. Don’t deserve the discretionary charge if you do the bare minimum.

Visited on a lovely warm September afternoon, we were lucky to get a table as it was packed. Enjoyed cocktails & olives. They’ve invested a lot into the roof area. There’s comfy seating and blankets available plus a retractable roof. Service was good and the food we saw coming out looked excellent.

I visited this hidden gem yesterday with my friend. Who incidentally is a wheelchair user. Entry is via lift, in flower sellers corridor. We got put in the lift and met at the top. Nice outdoor area with various sized tables. Views were not great over roofs. The chairs all had cushions and a blanket on them. Staff attentive. We had a lemon cocktail each, which was in the smallest martini glass I’ve ever seen. It was nice, but certainly not worth £13. We did look at the menu, which we found a bit limited and pricy. So we ate elsewhere. The food delivered to others looked very nice. The mexican? music was far too loud.

Popped in for just a coffee and catch-up with our adult son. It was a cold, rainy day in Newcastle, but we were super snug under the gas heaters, plus every seat has a throw blanket on it so I had one wrapped around my shoulders. We ended up staying longer than we’d expected, so ordered a flatbread pizza thing which was mouth-wateringly delicious! The service was absolutely fantastic. Andy the manager and all the team were so friendly and helpful. Thank you all!

We visited for lunch on a Monday and it was not busy. We had a roof edge seat which was great , so we could watch the world below and the roof tops. The menu is small but we had plenty of things yo chose from. Staff were very friendly and efficient. Service was fantastic. The food was nicely presented and tasty. Very filling. We had bresd and olives to share ( it was me and my daughter) to start followed by a main course each. And a lush chocolate tart. We had a bottle of Prosecco. The food was reasonably priced but I think the wine is expensive. We, ( me and my daughter) enjoyed our lunch and will probably come back.

Sitting atop of Newcastle's celebrated Fenwicks store this restaurant/bar offers great food and a fantastic drinks choice. The awning was out on a warm sunny day and we would have preferred it to be open so as to enjoy the sunshine, views are restricted by the safety perspex screen. The service was attentive and the menu which is on the expensive side comes with a discretionary gratuity.

Nice space, friendly staff and a great vibe- attended for an event. The 4 course meal started well. First 2 courses were tasty, portion size good, light (salad) very fresh and seasonal. Unfortunately it went downhill from there. Main was chicken skewer which to be fair was cooked well-nice and tender but the dish itself was boring and not in keeping with the first 2 dishes. Then came the oddest course I’ve ever eaten anywhere - bagel, scrambled egg and smoked salmon- why it was even on the menu I’ve no idea but If you wanted to serve a fish dish, serving a breakfast staple was not the way to do it. It had no place and most people appeared to agree by how much of it was left. Dessert didn’t come for almost an hour later! By which point everyone was enjoying the music and there was a lot of melted ice cream by the time guests even realised it was there! This lunch has so much potential but fell short of expectations. Service was ok, friendly but at times seemed flustered. Lacked experience I think and avoided guests by congregating around the open pass of the kitchen. Others agreed the food wasn't the high point of the event but one couple said that they ate there often and the normal menu was much better. Another table had allergens and they’d had an even more disappointing meal. The event itself was great but the food needs to be better before I’d consider returning.

I chose the burger which was fabulous and it came with a small bowl of roast potatoes. Plent of cheese, lettuce and surprisingly cranberry sauce. My husband chose the fish and it came in a nice sauce with a few vegetables and no potatoes. I shared mine with him. Burger £16 and fish £19.50. I had a glass of Malbec and my husband had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc at £10.50 each. I had no difficulty with the discretionary service charge of £5.65 which was highlighted on the bill

Awful, so overpriced. Asked for the set menu and had to ask 10 mins again. Only 8 other people in on Saturday lunchtime. Crab on toast for starter, complained it was not much crab and she took it back to the chef ,my husband commented he’s just moved it around , the toast was cold, hard to cut, and at £12 disgraceful. My husband choose the main dish of chicken, more bone than chicken, sauce ok, veg was a wilted spring onion that looks as if it had seen better days. My main of cauliflower was disappointing also. We had to move as the rain started coming through the side of the top canopy , an umbrella was offered , difficult to eat whilst holding an umbrella. Of the three toilets one had broken lock/ handle ,the other no toilet paper. Would not recommend and wish we had gone to The Botanist instead.

Called in for drinks before going elsewhere for lunch and ended up staying 2 hours! Absolutely gorgeous place to relax and chill. Beautifully warm and no need to use the blankets on each chair. It reminded me of the gorgeous bars in Krakow. We enjoyed craft ale and beautiful cocktails lemon drop being divine. Fantastic friendly staff made for a fab visit. Can't wait to return

Don’t ask for a pint of lager, they only serve 3/4 pints as apparently that’s the Mediterranean way but still charge you full price…… Add on a service charge by the establishment for the privilege of watching pigeons on the roof makes it a truly enjoyable experience. No toilets ready at the minute so don’t consume too much either. Won’t be back…..

Visited for lunch Friday lunchtime with a girlfriend. We only had a main from the grill - sea bream and chicken - with a couple of sides to share and the food was great. Staff were very attentive and couldn't do enough for us. The canopy was covering when we arrived and we were pleased it was as there was a freak hail storm during our meal. Staff were very quick to offer umbrellas at the tables placed at the junctions of the canopy, as they may be at risk of getting wet. Our cocktails were lovely and the area has a very relaxing ambience. We had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and we will definitely visit again.

Visited here on a Friday lunchtime and whilst I expected open air the awning had been deployed and this proved necessary with a heavy shower at end of our meal seeing brollies deployed having been supplied by waiting staff promptly, thankfully not at our table. Food was excellent we ordered a cauliflower steak and halloumi for our main courses accompanied by a side fish of roast rosemary potatoes For dessert we had lemon posset and chocolate and tonka bean tart with banana ice cream. Servicews okay but variable with long wait for our main course and despite being offered a dessert menu then had to ask for one only to be offered them twice.

Lofty location on the roof terrace of Fenwicks. We enjoyed a tasty brunch of honey roasted bacon and poached eggs with tea and orange juice. The staff were attentive and we loved the relaxing atmosphere with rooftop views.

Not good at all. Awful smell wafting around. Lipstick on glass. Didn't stay long. Will stick to dining within the food hall in future.

The place itself is nice but the views aren't and the pigeons are really off putting. The food was OK, overpriced for what it you get, there are far better alternatives in Newcastle with better views and no pigeons!

went for a meal before going to the theatre. the drinks were fine but lingering smell of drains/sewage was quite off putting. 4 of us ordered food and all meals were below expectations. my own meal of spring chicken was put aside after 2 mouthfuls....

The cafe prices are ludicrous. £3.45 for a toasted tea cake with barely any fruit in it is ridiculous as is a fiver for two cups of tea and £9 for a cooked breakfast!! The staff are not the most pleasant either. Sadly the shop and garden centre prices are way off the scale too compared to most other garden centres. Definitely would not recommend or revisit.

Called in at lunchtime for a couple of drinks. This is the second time but no more. A man, the same on both occasions standing at bar had the foulest loud mouth He was actually talking to the barman and two others Every other word began with "f' He had a dog with him This time he pulled seat out at one of the tables for his dog to sit at Absolutely disgusting. My husband mentioned to barman who grinned and apologised Not good enough

Nice little hotel bar right on the Main Street of Alnwick I had drink several times during our stay in Alnwick. Margaret had the chilli which she said was nice. I wasn’t hungry so had the potato skins which came with a barbecue sauce and garlic mayo, which were ok but out of a bottle.

Popped in for lunch on a day over to Lindisfarne. Despite advertising that they cater for gluten free, a disappointing menu. When I asked at the bar if they do anything gluten free, the barman said that anything gluten free will have GF after it on menu, but they can do any sandwich with gluten free bread. There were no meals suitable on menu, so I went back to bar and asked if their spread was dairy free. Barmaid gives a big sigh and goes to check. Comes back to say yes it is, what do you want- like it was a big inconvenience for her. It’s not my husbands fault that he has allergies. Such attitude makes me wonder how anyone goes back here. Sarnie was ok but they didnt seem to do it separate to normal food as hubby found a bit of grated cheese attached to his bread. If he hadn’t spotted it, he would have been I’ll. overpriced too as the bread was just normal sliced bread. WONT BE GOING BACK!
