Roka Aldwych in City of London, Westminster

Portion sizes are a joke. £16 for 2 beef skewers. With one of the managers saying it’s that expensive because it’s beef. Had to argue to allow them to amend my original order. Don’t charge big money if the basic meat can be finished in one bite (Yes, beef is basic)!

Enjoyed bottomless brunch menu for £59. We had one round for starters between 3 people and it was already so filling! The starters were very tasty, favourite was the fried chicken and chilli mayo and sushi rolls. Potato crockets were perfectly crispy on the outside and lovely and creamy on the inside. Flavour did not disappoint. This was followed by a lovely main course, salmon fillet with teriyaki sauce. Dessert were like a work of art! Perfect balance of fruit, sorbet and chocolate. Did not disappoint! Great value for money!

Retro soda fountain, fizzy sodas and ice cream floats.

Place was really good and well located, the portions ARE very small to my liking, we ordered semi fatty tuna sashimi and we got 3 miserable pieces of semi fatty tuna to give an estimate the pieces were about 1 cm tall and 2 wide, remind you this was shared between 3 people. Apart from that the rest of the food was super duper nice, baby chicken dish was espectacular, the teriyaki salmon was also super good and its okay to share too same with the chicken. The dessert was excellent, i had the sticky toffee pudding with my son and my grandma had the mochi ice cream, she said they were pretty nice. Overall really nice place good service good food but some dishes were small. Would comeback Ps: I spent 250£ in total around 80£ per person

The food really speaks for itself. We had the tasting menu and it was superb. Almost too much food for 2 people. Every single course was sublime. This is coming from someone who loves Japanese food and has been to many Japanese restaurants in a number of different countries! Will be planning my next trip back as soon as possible!

I’m genuinely surprised at the reviews. It was average at best. We went there to celebrate a birthday and I’d planned to have the taster menu but on getting there the menu was lacklustre as was the atmosphere and decor/lighting etc. we had a small dish each and left disappointed. How they think they can put 14.5% standard service charge on a very average restaurant is surprising. I’d not go again or recommend it for anything other than a chain restaurant meal.

The staff, quality of food/drinks and atmosphere are all outstanding. Only negative was a double charge for an expensive bottle on our bill - always check before paying!

Excellent Japanese, the dishes are delicious and served with great care. Our waiter was attentive, kind and personable. The cocktails are also worth trying. I recommend booking.

High end Japanese restaurant with lunch deal

Used to be my favourite Sushi restaurant pre-covid but has gone massively downhill since. Such a shame. Not worth it anymore.

Probably my 5th time doing the Roka brunch. I absolutely love it.in fact it seems to just get better. Food always excellent and plentiful. Staff generally great. Sure we will be back again!

Excellent Japanese. Even the smaller seasonal tasting menu buries you with high quality food. Presentation is excellent. Attentive service slowed down a lot towards the end of the evening. Pricey, but not stupidly unreasonable.

Very disappointing experience for a restaurant with almost two hundred per person. Service was poor, waiters were lazy and indifferent to us. I was made to wait for almost half an hour for cold dishes? Doesn’t make sense at all! .The sushi at the local supermarket is even better than this, sushi had no taste seemed like it came from the fridge！And almost every dish was salty, but the steak forgot the salt. ☹️Any cheap Japanese restaurant could have served faster and tasted better. Lots of good restaurants in the neighborhood. Never come to this one.

This brunch used to be so amazing. We were really disappointed on our last visit. The staff rushed us, served us from the menu we didn’t request, didn’t ask if we would like a last round, and also didn’t apologise. When I complained the managers reply was we had over 400 covers at lunch. As a customer this is not what you expect to hear from a 5 star restaurant as the reason for bad service ( if this is the problem Roka might consider employing more staff or reducing table bookings)

I love Roka and have enjoyed the consistency of outstanding food and flavours since it began. Generally my visits have been at Charlotte St or Mayfair. This is the second time at Aldwych. The ambience is like the other two and the service was generally good. My only disappointment was the quantity of food. All of the portions were a lot smaller than what we were used too. All of the group commented and said the same. Is this the aftermath of lockdown and the cost of product? It was the only blip in a great night.

Been here multiple times and don't get me wrong, the food is great and some dishes truly special, it's a great experience. It wouldn't deter me going back and i've been before on multiple occasions where it's been faultless but the service was just really poor yesterday. We were left waiting close to 30 mins for a round of drinks, had to re-order drinks on two separate occasions and when you're paying circa £150 per head for a special occasion, you just want slightly better. Still loved it, think it's amazing, won't stop me going back just thought that was a let down.

The food was amazing! A strong 5/5 - the service was also great too, the staff were patient with us and quick the food. HOWEVER, one guy was just complete bad vibes. Quite small and was giving manager or supervisor vibes. It ruined the end of the night for us. The vibes was good too, everyone was just enjoying their evening and eating away!

Beautiful tasting sushi in a lovely cool and relaxed atmoshphere! Its worth a trip everytime!

The food and service was generally good, however... I had a voucher for the bottomless brunch given to me as a birthday gift. The voucher does not have a value assigned to it, the recipient only sees that it's the bottomless brunch. I was asked what the value of the voucher was when I first showed them (before we ordered) and I said I didn't know because it's a gift voucher and that's not how it worked. I was asked to email the voucher to the restaurants reception email which was fine. The server then came back to our table having reviewed the voucher I emailed, then told me how much the voucher was worth and that the brunch had since increased in price since the voucher was purchased and we would need to pay the difference. This felt a bit off to me - the voucher was purchased for a brunch, not as a specific value, so to be told we had to pay more rather soured what was supposed to be a gifted and carefree experience. I have never experienced this elsewhere and I would urge Roka to reconsider their position on this in future and honour the voucher for what it is and the original value that was paid for it, instead of charging unsuspecting customers the difference. It really doesn't take much and is honestly poor customer service. We were also given the bill before the dessert had been cleared from the table, we didn't ask for it, which gave us the message of "please leave now". It felt like an unwelcoming approach to something that was gifted as a fun and luxurious experience.

I had the £71.50 bottomless brunch which included unlimited small plate one main, sharing desert platter and free flowing fizz, rose or wine. Overall the food was well presented and tasty. I’d suggest you start with a selection of all the small pales than pick what you want more of after a.

Came for the pre-theatre and was blown away by how great it all was. Food was fabulous and there is so much. You get 5/6 sharing dishes for the table depending on how many people and a main and dessert- all for £36. The food was delicious- sushi and sashimi was my favourite as a pescatarian but the meat-eaters said the ribs were moist and tasty. We had a happy hour cocktail as well and even with wine it was less than £60 per head for a truly great wine and dine experience. I would go again and again. Highly recommended for pre-theatre (and not rushed as some pre-theatre is). Thank you Roka :)

Not great - inconsistent cocktails (we asked and found the bar decided to add more alcohol to some than others… really strange), waiting for service/water, no explanation of dishes as they were placed down without much care, flies buzzing around the counter. List goes on. It did not feel high end at all.

We had a group brunch here and it was delicious. The set menu with wine was great. We will return!

Luckily and randomly saw this place on a work trip and could not recommend d highly enough. Great ambiance, excellent service, and the food + cocktails were top notch. Had sushi, yakitori, and a little bit of other stuff, all 👌👌.

Excellent menu with plenty of options, the meats in particular were very good. Service at times was a little slow and the desserts whilst presented well were a little underwhelming. Overall a great evening, I’d happily try it again.

The starters were very nice, I had the ribs as a main which needed more sauce or seasoning as they were very bland. The Prosecco is either watered down or very low alcohol volume as it didn’t taste like Prosecco at all and didn’t give us the expected buzz! Service was a bit shaky, I had to ask for hot water twice before actually getting it, my friend waited about an hour for some lemons. There was an error with our bill so so one of the waiters said we could get more drinks at the bar but when we went over there, he said he never said that and there was also nowhere to sit! It was obvious that they just wanted the table back so lied and told us we could finish our 2 hours at the bar so we felt cheated! The way the dessert platter is served doesn’t really make sense, for a table of 6 there was different desserts and some fruits but no spoons to serve it and also not enough to actually share evenly between us

Always a vibe, great place to celebrate bdays and catch up with friends

It wasn't the right choice of venue for the nature of the event which was a 30th Birthday. The atmosphere was very stiff and the portions are expensive and not very filling. The quality was great but we were still hungry by the end. The bill was £119 per person for 6 of us. I was sat by myself for 10 minutes on the table in the middle of the dining room and many team members walked past without welcoming me and asking if I'd like a drink.

The service was great and food nice however none of the dishes blew us away and could have been better value in places. Glad to have tried it out and seen the venue but will probably not go again.

Wow this place is great. I’d love to revisit with friends and family, for them to be ‘wowed’ too. We had a 10 person round table (perfect for a special occasion). The seasonal set menu couldn’t have tasted better. Incredible flavours in both the fish and vegetarian dishes. There was more food than anyone could finish, which we felt guilty it going to waste.

Delicious food with a great variety on the menu. Good selection of Sake and wines, perfect for pairing with Japanese cuisine. I emphasize the desserts, which are fantastic and showcase innovation. The service could have been better (we had to ask three times to take our order). It is important to make a reservation.

I was a regular Patreon pre-Covid and this somehow fell off my radar. I am so glad I revisited as it reminded me about how a restaurant remains so consistent offering its customers exceptional quality food is rare. Only negative is that it’s quite business oriented with its clientele during the week. However as a business customer myself I am part of the problem myself. I will be returning in 2024z.

This was a disappointing experience for several reasons. First, the service was incredibly slow - we waited over 15 minutes for our first drinks order to arrive. Second, one of the main dishes ordered did not arrive at all! So one of the guests had no food. The server taking the order apparently thought that two guests ordering the same two dishes would be willing to share one dish! Very odd. And awkward given that it was a business dinnner. 3. The menu choice for vegetarians is now worse than before. There is still no vegetarian set menu - even though there are two non vegetarian ones. There were only two main dishes that were vegetarian. The miso soup (once vegetarian) is no longer vegetarian! The tempura is only sweet potato rather than mixed vegetables and sweet potato features again on the menu as the only vegetarian option in that section. The nasu dengkaku no longer states that it is vegetarian. So I was left with nibbling on edamame and iceberg lettuce and sharing my grilled tofu and grilled portobello mushrooms with my guest whose main course failed to arrive. One member of staff apologised and provided some complimentary drinks but there was no wider recognition of the poor service by the more senior staff. Very poor experience. And a distinct feeling that Roka Aldwych does not welcome or value vegetarian clients.

Had the brunch and honestly really impressed. Such good value - we ate and drank so much! Roka is a firm favourite any way but the brunch deal gives you so much variety of food and bottomless wine. Favourites were the crispy chicken and prawn dumpling. Service at this branch was really lovely and the whole meal was just enjoyable. Can’t fault this one - well done Roka we will be back

After a delay in our table being ready the staff were considerate and helpful. We were offered some free drinks and an apology. The food was good and we will happily revisit.

Went for bottomless brunch for a friends birthday. The food was good but service was quite slow, I probably had about 3 glasses of Prosecco in the 2 hours. It was very busy so staff definitely looked rushed off their feet. Would return again!

Just to start on a couple of mild mild positives: the food is OK and the environment, whilst noisy, is pleasant. However at the prices charged you would expect the food to be better than OK and the experience to be very good. Unfortunately, beyond the food the experience was woeful. This seems to be a recurring theme over the more recent reviews and I wished that I had read them before booking. I don't know iof they were understaffed, poorly trained or if the waiter we had was just in the wrong job, but the experience was so poor that for the first time ever (in 45 years of dining in London) I removed the service charge. Just a few examples: - We tried to order scallops but the waiter said he didn't think there were any left. We asked him to check and he said there were definately none left. Imagine our surprise when the table that ordered 20 minutes after us has scallops delivered. - Where we were seated seemed to be in an alternative unverse as we and the table next to us barely had a visit from the waiters. No water refils (Roka Charlotte Street and Mayfair were very assiduous in this); no checking that the food was OK; plates left on the table for ages. - At one point, having been ignored for 15 minutes I had to go the Front Desk to get any service I could go on but the overall impression was of a total lack of hospitality: continuosly slow, lazy and surly service (with the exception of the lady on the front desk who came to help). For the same money we could have eaten at Murano or La Carectere and had exceptional food from owner operators who actually care about the hospitality they offer to their diners. Until something drastic is done with this restaurant I would avoid Roka Aldwych.

Consistently great food, cocktails and sake across the Roka restaurants in London. Think you can spend a lot more at other Japanese restaurants for marginal differences in quality of food.

Disappointing is the word for this place. Very mixed experience with the food, Sea Bream was awful/inedible and ribs were dry but dessert was very nice. Service staff very forgetful and pretty slow despite it only being moderately busy. Given the amount charged, should definately be providing a better experience.

Right from the start, the service here impressed us - the hostess was super welcoming, the bar staff were friendly, and our table service was top-notch. The food? It's not just tasty and well-presented, which you'd expect from a place like this, but it's also got a really original twist. Definitely try the Bocoli and the Lamb Chops - they're amazing. This place nails it with great service and food that's a cut above the usual.

Excellent service. I had so much to eat and it was all good food even as a vegetarian. I would go again. I had the salad, edamame, kimchi, potato croquettes, mushroom hot pot and dessert platter.

Usually our favourite restaurant by a mile, unfortunately this was not the best experience, very disappointed as it was for a special occasion. Portion sizes have become so small, we needed to order 2 of some items like the sashimi, literally now bite size pieces! Miso aubergine used to look so impressive on the large round plate, now it was just a small mound. Also had to keep calling waiter, for everything, even re-filling of water glasses, more than once, cappuccino was forgotten to be served with dessert when we asked specifically for that, no apology, just shrug of shoulder!! Service & quantity & taste of food could be understood at other restaurants BUT NOT when you’re at a high end restaurant like ROKA & it was not even full, just a bit busy. It will be a long time before we are back. Sad as this was my family’s favourite place to eat on special occasions.

Great food but service was slow. Not offered drinks for the 10 minute wait sat at the bar for table to be ready. Difficult to take order once at table and to clear the table/pay the bill.

We were a group and 7 people and decided it was easiest to go for the premium tasting menu. Sharing plates of sashimi, gyoza, tempura, miso black cod, lamb cutlets, wagyu beef - generous portions. The lamb cutlets were deliciously seasoned and tender, they are to die for! To finish we were presented with the signature Roma dessert platter - ending on a high. It was a finely thought-out menu and I recommend it to anyone who loves raw fish and grilled meats in Asian style.

The vibe was good, and the food for the brunch was tasty. Unfortunately the service was average and one of the men was incredibly rude to us. It was unnecessary and ruined our meal. I’d say eat elsewhere!

The atmosphere was far too loud, the manager was incredibly dismissive and the service was extremely slow throughout considering we came for a bottomless brunch. We did not get as many rounds of drinks or starters as we anticipated, especially as we know the quality of service at Canary Wharf. However, Evelina was superb, and did her best to make up for the shortcomings of the evening. She did a fantastic job, and deserves more as an employee.

Excellent food. Much better service and quality of food than the Mayfair branch. Took off a star for the ambience. The space is cavernous and noisy. Perhaps they need a bit more soft furnishing to absorb the noise. I could barely hear myself think. But would still return.

I booked this for my husbands birthday in November. We had the bottomless brunch which was truly bottomless in every aspect! You get unlimited starters, 1 main each and 1 dessert tray to share. We were SO full and satisfied with the starters that we could barely touch our mains! The food came out fresh and quick but SO delicious! The service was AMAZING! Staff are so friendly and professional. We were over an hour late due to London protests and they kindly moved out timing without any problem! I will definitely be going back here

Fab flavours - we had the tasting menu and will definitely be back! Was a surprise birthday lunch - if you have the tasting menu be sure to have enough time to enjoy every course. They decorated the fruit platter which was out of this world with a candle and sparkler which was a nice touch. Can't wait to visit again.

Terrible service and extremely poor value for money!!! All of the food came out at once within 10 minutes of ordering, the waiter was very inattentive, not only forgetting about the wine order but also not once checking in to see whether we enjoyed the food. They never refilled our water (had to explicitly ask for it), food was extremely mediocre for the price, and on the way out, we were not acknowledged by any staff. Will not return!

went for the brunch. Food: Starters were ok. 7/10 Mains were horrendous. Ridiculously poor quality. Steak was chewy and smelled of rot. 1/10 Service: our waitress was attentive and very busy. There were massive gaps between “refills” for starters. Probably to put you off from reordering several times. Atmosphere: Was full of people in their early 20s, mainly insta “influencers”. Toilets were utterly filthy. Vibes were poor. I wouldn’t recommend this experience.

Despite being an upscale Japanese restaurant, Roka's food was rather underwhelming. Overall the quality is alright, but definitely disproportionate to the amount we were paying. It was also a bit odd to stare at a mountain of raw onions throughout the meal.

We went for brunch, the food was decent but the service was poor. The portions were so small: sushi was served two-by-two. There were two of us so I assume one guest was entitled to have only one sushi per round. The service was not forthcoming to allow us to reorder the starters. Orders for starters were frequently forgotten and required constant reminders. Our mains were served without asking us if we were ready to move on and they arrived more than ten minutes apart. (Once the mains are served, you are not allowed to reorder any of the starters.) More attention seemed to be given to refilling alcohol at other tables which ordered it. We were finished before our two-hour booking was up which meant there was no need to rush us to our mains when we still wanted more starters. Additionally, someone please help me understand why diners have to eat with disposable chopsticks. It is the same as its branch in Canary Wharf. Silly to pay premium prices and not get to eat with proper cutlery.

Absolutely brilliant brunch. All staff were welcoming, professional and friendly (and quick to refresh the glass's on the table, if you are doing the bottomless wine or prosecco). Great, buzzy but not noisey, atmosphere. Every dish was flawless. Whole-heartedly can recommend. The ribs available on the main course order, especially deserve a mention, although our group did order all the mains and each and everyone was incredible. One of my new favourite places to eat, even though I'm not big on sushi or sashimi, if you're the same don't let that put you off, there are other options that you'll love. Hold on to your hats and save room in your bellies for the dessert platter! It's not one you'd want to miss!

The worst service I have ever had !!! I reserved this table for the pre theatre menu as I have had it before in the Charlotte street branch and was fantastic! I was originally booked for 6pm but had to move my table to 6.30 which was advised by the reservation team that this time was still ok for the pre theatre menu as it is until 7pm. Twice we were told by a waiter and the assistant manager that we could not have this menu of which I explained the reservation team said we could. The assistant manager came back and said reluctantly they we could. The food usually comes out staggered as there are 5 courses the last being the only one that is not a shared plate. Everything came out together in 10 minutes except for the final course. I ordered the chicken which arrived without the rice or my husbands salmon and after 10 minutes called over the wsiter(assistant manager ) at no point did any member of staff check how our meal was! We called them over and they then took my chicken away as it was now cold and left the rice. They then brought my husbands salmon over which was over cooked (tough) and was sent back to the kitchen. And the final insult was the return of the SAME PIECE OF CHICKEN!!! I had eaten one piece of it ! They had re heated the chicken instead of sending out a new piece!! Along with the rice they had sent out earlier now cold!! Throughout the whole meal we were made to feel like we could not afford to eat there because we were eating the pre theatre menu , absolutely disgusting behaviour throughout from the assistant manager. We will never return to Roka and return to Nobu which is far superior on all levels.

Great food, good quantity. Nice first introduction to Japanese food in London. Experience was marred by the fact that one of the staff asked us to leave although we were still within our booking window of the brunch. We had already paid and I was just waiting for my friend to return from the restroom to leave and I informed him of that. He insisted that I leave now. I showed him my reservation and pointed out that I still had the table for 2 minutes, he had a confused look on his face and without so much of an apology said he will let his front desk know ! Let the front desk know what? Some courtesy and apology would have been better. Not the treatment you expect when you have paid 206 pounds for a meal for two!

This was an easy 5-star rating! Wow, the food and overall experience here is amazing, and we would return in an instant. We strted with the spicy edamame and twmpura prawns, both very tasty. Then since there were 4 of us, so we ordered 2 of the premium and 2 of the 'regular' set menus and were able to taste a lot of their delicious food. Highlights included the sashimi, black cod, pork ribs and teh baby chicken. But everything we had was amazing. Go! (sorry only 1 photo).

Amazing food. Bit pricey, but worth it.

We went as a group of 4 for the han setto brunch to celebrate my niece’s birthday. The food was well presented and sufficient in quantity. The first course were served, sharing style and comprised a varied selection of cooked food, greens (salad and edamame) and sushi and sashimi. The maki rolls were tiny and the sashimi is quite basic (salmon, tuna and prawn) but the gyoza was delicious. We were able to select our own main - we had the sea bream, ribs and chicken; decent portion size. The dessert selection was lovely and well presented. The only minus was the service levels. While it did get busier as the afternoon progressed, we had to keep asking for our drinks to be topped up. There was a soy sauce spill and the staff didn’t bother cleaning that up until I had to draw their attention to do so. The 14 percent service charge was a bit excessive considering the service was lacking. Staff weren’t very friendly or welcoming and barely smiled or acknowledged our presence once the food had been served. Usually fresh plates are offered as a minimum, between courses but this was not done despite it being fairly obvious. The bathrooms were also not particular maintained. Tissue paper on the floor by the sink gave off the impression that no one had checked the bathroom for a while. I’d go back again because I like Roka and the brunch is a nice experience but the service will hopefully improve.

We’re regulars at Roka but we usually go to the Charlotte Street one, came to Roka Aldwych for the weekend brunch and from start to finish it was exceptional. The food was delicious, the quantity was more than enough for 2 people. The service was great, very attentive, friendly staff and the restaurant itself was very spacious unlike the other Roka branches. We will definitely be coming here again.

Pre-theatre set menu dinner, excellent food

TL:DR - Go to Sticks N Sushi instead for the same quality taste with better service and much fairer portion size at the same price point. This was our second time at Roka, the first was a Brunch a few years ago which we loved. This time we had dinner and it was for my partners birthday. Despite me advising that it was my partners birthday the Roka team did nothing to make the evening special in any way at all outside of their normal service. The team were clearly understaffed as service was painfully slow. We arrived 30 mins early and were told they would seat us when a table was available and to wait at the bar. We waited the full 30 mins, which we had no complaint about as we were early but to our surprise when we were taken through to the restaurant there were lots of empty tables available. It was clear they were they understaffed as taking our orders and bringing food to us was slow, we rarely saw table service wandering around which is unusual for a high end restaurant. The service was not the main detractor from the evening, it was the portion size. The food was tasty and as sushi fans we are used to small dishes but Roka has hit all their dishes with at least a 50% downsize since our last visit a few years ago. This would be ok if the price had been adjusted to match, but it hasn't. The sashimi and rolls were children's portions at adult sushi prices. We got 8 small rolls for two sets of sushi rolls at circa £15-£16 each. We regularly eat at Sitcks N Sushi, a direct competitor of Roka and for the same price you get 8-10 rolls and the rolls themselves are more substantial. In short we paid for a high end sushi experience and left feeling hungry and short changed. You have cut the portions and the staff too much Roka and as a result have lost our future custom.

This restaurant was ok but for the money I want more than ok. The aubergine was delicious. The sashimi was superb. However, the beef fillet was chewy and also 'bled' all over the plate, so was clearly not rested. That was disappointing. The cocktails sounded amazing but lacked any distinctive flavour to make them stand out. Sake was excellent, though. Overall a bit hit and miss.

We visited this Roka location for the first time a couple of weeks (have been to the one in Canary Wharf several times). Food was great. However, it is really loud and noisy so it is difficult to catch up with friends without shouting. Also, unlike the Roka at Canary Wharf, the unlimited starters are not displayed as a buffet so you have to keep getting a waiter's attention to ask for more. We were also handed the bill (after 1.5 hours, without asking!), which we found rather rude as we felt as if we were being thrown out. Recommend booking in advance, and take note of any time restrictions on the table. Good service and very tasty food. Decent portion sizes. Vibrant atmosphere without being too noisy. All for food being delivered as and when it is ready, but disappointed by the rice being delivered long after the main dish it was supposed to accompany. Also took an age to get the bill once it was obvious we were done ordering anything else.
