Roebuck in Richmond upon Thames

The pub is fantastic, but the staffing situation leaves much to be desired. It’s consistently understaffed, which can be frustrating. If you’re looking for to sit at The View, I recommend heading to Friars Stile Road to stock up at Salisbury’s local instead.

Hate leaving bad reviews but this experience was awful. Booked a Sunday Roast in the window snug two weeks in advance for 4 people at 7:30pm, pub was quiet when we walked in but stood at the bar acknowledged by anyone for 10 minutes despite four workers being behind the bar, one hiding behind the bar on her phone. Once prompted that we had a reservation someone had to go upstairs to “fetch a tablet” which took another 5 minutes. Despite booking the window snug we were given a different table because apparently they’re sometimes “randomly assigned”. Went to order and the worker saw us walking up and walked away. After waiting further the least enthusiastic worker I’ve ever seen said they had no roast pork and one roast beef left, they had also run out of pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese. You’d have thought they would mention this when sitting us down but no one actually took us to our table or came to take the order we went to the bar after waiting at the table. They went to double check this with the kitchen but were left waiting so long we walked out. Having worked in customer service for 10 years I’ve never experienced such awful and rude customer service it was the strangest experience. Wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone nor would I return.

Had a roast here. Unfortunately the vegetables were still raw and not cooked through, we sent the cauliflower cheese back but it still can back undercooked. Some bits of the roast were good but the issues with the vegetables coupled with the slow and minimal service brought our experience down. It’s got great atmosphere so would stop for a drink rather than food.

Always be one of the favourites pubs in London !

The service was good we had a nice attentive waitress but the food was very bad. The roast was overcooked and had a furry texture. Would not recommend.

Very disappointing roast - not sure if they’ve got a new chef or something, but their Sunday roast delivered a few tiny overcooked scraps of beef, and their cauliflower cheese had basically no cheese, cauliflower that was still raw in the middle, all day sadly in way too much mustard. A side order of bread comes with 3 thin cut small triangles of mediocre bread. Have been regularly before and really enjoyed it, but they need to sort out their kitchen - it seems like someone is determined to cut costs any way they can at the moment. Wouldn’t go back if it carries on like this.

I love this pub. It feels like how a pub should feel, inviting and homey. The manager is a proper publican. She directs her customers with cheer and confidence. She doesn't drop the ball. It's fun to watch her do her thing. They do an excellent veggie Sunday roast. Update!*** What happened? Completely different menu. Pub grub, gone. It's upmarket and much pricier, portions smaller. Not nearly as delicious. Takes absolutely ages to get your drinks. Ages for the food. Feels like they overbook for profit and can't actually match that sort of output with quality food and service. Our neighbors waited a long time and actually left. At one point we were actually so thirsty for water. Took about 30 minutes to get water on the table. May those wonderful nachos rest in peace. Bummed. This place felt so homey and now it feels like a detached gastro pub. There aren't enough proper pubs anymore. This is a drastic change from Marie's running of the pub. A veggie Wellington was 12 pounds at one point. Understand that prices go up. But 20? Nearly the same as the meat. And then a tiny side of veg.

Very nice service and cosy pub with outstanding view, however the food was a let down. For example, the cheese toastie is literally a béchamel sandwich and the confit duck leg not confit at all and felt industrial.

What a brilliant pub, it has everything you want. Cozy bits with an open fire, great dining room upstairs overlooking the river and a brilliant food and drink offering. Combine that with the lovely friendly staff and it’s a winner. Dec and Justina were the team in today and they could not have been more hospitable!

Came here on a Saturday at 5pm. Asked the bar staff where I would speak to someone for a booking; the barman v rudely pointed and said ‘my colleague’. We then went upstairs and sat down to a very Smokey room. Ordered 3 soft drinks which took 25 minutes to arrive. Our food took an hour. We then ordered another Diet Coke, which took 2 reminders and 30 minutes to come. At no point did anyone acknowledge the horrendous service or apologise. Let down as the interior is really nice and food was ok! Only saving grace is that they didn’t add service to the bill, and it wasn’t an option on the card machine.

Really love this place. A classic pub with good food. Plenty of vegan and veggie options. Service is solid. Plus, the view is wonderful.

An amazingly located pub with views over London, but sadly not the food to match. We honestly had the worst roast I’ve ever had here unfortunately. As many other reviews have said, the roast is just not good - the beef was a tiny portion and the chicken my wife had was the most overcooked piece of meat I’ve ever seen. The vegetables on the other hand were barely cooked, and everything was lukewarm. I’m surprised they haven’t done anything about it since all the reviews seem to say the same thing. Wish I’d checked them earlier. The service was fantastic and the waitress couldn’t do enough for us. I was so embarrassed to tell her that actually the food wasn’t very nice when she asked, but I had to be honest. I like to support venues and feel bad writing a negative review but equally if you’re going to charge someone £25 for a roast they could have made better at home, I’d like to warn people off. The least you can do is serve a decent portion and make it warm. Keep your hard earned money and spend it somewhere else.

I wouldn’t go anywhere else in Richmond! You have the most picturesque view right at the doorstep, lovely staff and great English pub food! Tony is a legend and someone you want serving your table! Affordable and middle of the price range. Can’t go wrong!!! Cocktails, old and new, extensive offerings on tap and a lovely selection of wine.

Well worth going for a drink as most people do. They run a take away service which is great to have with the view. Service is really slow inside for food and there were at least three complaints during my lunch there from other customers. I would eat elsewhere.

Booked the private dining area for a lunch, celebrating Dad’s 85th. Wonderful service, great food - the best roast beef I have had in a pub for quite some time, and reasonably priced! Great atmosphere too. We’ll definitely be back. Thank you for making it so special!

Our walking group has been coming to "The Roebuck" for upwards of 10 years. In fairness I was concerned at "the change of management" but had found both Bianca and Justyna so very helpful, welcoming to our group, and helpful in all ways. Will be back for our "Annual Post Xmas Walk & Social" next year - attempting to get them to do a Summer on - THANKS AGAIN Bill

That was my first and last visit to this place. Looks like staff don’t know what hospitality is. They acting like they don’t want to see you at all. Chap who is working upstairs on the first floor so non-confident. He has ignored us several times. Table is limited to 1.5 hours and has to be returned back. Feels like he doesn’t like East Europeans for some reason. However we live for 20 years in the UK and we are British Citizens. Shall we expect the respect from waiters team in the restaurant? If you wish to have better service and atmosphere, avoid this place. Feel free to contact me for further details.

Ive had so much better from the Roebuck Richmond previously. Very disappointing Sunday roast. Vegetables were tiny, dehydrated and bendy and therefore inedible. Roast potatoes tasted and looked processed like they were Aunt Betsy's. The pigs in blanket (2) were so hard they were not chewable and so therefore also inedible. The meat portions were very small. I had the chicken which was overcooked and bone dry. I put the gravy boat on the dish to fill up the extra space as there was so little food. The Yorkshire pudding also took up space on the dish which I had to ask and pay extra for. I have photos which show, if you remove the Yorkshire pudding and gravy boat, how little food and in adequate the food was for £22 and over an hours wait. I did mention it to the manager and she "assured" me it was "normal' and the same as everyone elses but "to make me feel better" she provided more roast potatoes and extra veg - again all inedible. Really disappointing and poor and I will not be going back. I sent a message to the Roebuck and I've had no response. I put a post on Facebook including the Roebuck in it and again no response. Stopped by the Roebuck for lunch with my mother and was greeted by our wonderful server Tony. He was on his own but smashed it out the park. Great food. Great service.

Just popped in on the way back to the hotel, really warm and cosy, staff were friendly, didn't stay long so as was a little late.

Superb service, excellent food, wonderful ambience. The view from the upstairs restaurant is matchless.

We did have a wait at the bar and felt invisible as not even an aknowledgement when walking past. Once they came to serve us the staff were very nice. Squid was a lovely starter as was the feta and soda bread. Mains were Haddock, vege burger and fish and chips, all very nice. The pub was lovely and cosy and I would reccommend it. We forgot to take any photos!

I am such a picky person in regards to my food, cocktails and atmosphere (which is always based on the staff period) I’m picky about everything. 5 STAR DOES NOT EVEN START TO TELL YOU HOW GOOD THIS PUD/FINE DINNING ESTABLISHMENT IS. I am staying at the Richmond hill hotel for 6 weeks, will be drank, eating and enjoyed this wonderful British classic at least 4 night a week each week and every week! Don’t waste your time with other places. This is the only one you will need. Look out for Charlotte (Killer old fashioned)! Ailise! Mark! Izzy! ❤️❤️❤️

What a great pub with amazing views. The pub has so much character and charm. The food and the staff were excellent. The only thing I'd say is please don't overstretch them. They did an amazing job but today was so busy. They really could have done with a couple of extra pairs of hands to cope with the Sunday lunch rush. Business was lost due to the level of demand whilst the staff did their absolute best.

Nice pub in a good location. I went there over the weekend and even tho I expected it to be busy I felt like the staff weren't prepared for the business. They were definitely short staffed and everything took so long, table cleaning, drinks, food. We ordered burgers alongside some other bits and the beef patty was super well done to a point of chewy and you could taste the burned meat on every bite. I get it that the weekends are more difficult for the kitchen and bar staff in general which is why I wasn't bothered about the wait times but if I’m paying £17 for a burger I would expect it to at least not be burned which unfortunately is what all of our burgers were.

1 hr and 15 minutes waiting for a lunch main course, at lunchtime?? We hadn't ordered starters. Very disappointed. And when we asked the waiting times for dessert we were told 45 mins to 1 hour, so we left. This pub is in a lovely setting, very nice staff, lovely atmosphere - but really, sort the kitchen out. I will be returning, of course, as I want it to be good and successful.

Lovely view and lovely cosy interior, but we paid a whopping £23 for 2 standard pints and a small portion of nuts, making it the most expensive pint I’ve had. They also were understaffed which seemed stressful for the bartenders (and meant we were queuing a while). We left after one drink for a more reasonably-priced pub.

Been a customer for many years, loved taking my drinks across the road to enjoy the fabulous view of the river. Just don't understand how any self respecting pub can decide not to serve any crisps.

I have been to the Roebuck many times in the past and it has always been a lovely pub and great food in the restaurant. However I went last Sunday 29 December and was very disappointed. We had the Sunday roasts and were given a tiny bowl of vegetables between us, most of which were inedible as they weren’t cooked enough. The parsnips were practically raw and the roast potatoes were either too hard or more like boiled potatoes. We complained to the waitress who apologised but didn’t offer us anything in recompense. It’s a shame as this was always one of our favourite places to go.

Good spot, unfortunately it was a foggy day so we couldn’t appreciate the views. Food was quite good though portion sizes were on the small size and the selection was limited, especially for vegetarians. Service though was so slow. The staff were polite, but we were pretty much ignored and left after 2.5 hours without dessert despite asking for the menu three times.

This is a lovely pub with fantastic views. The food is also good and relatively reasonably priced. What let's it down is the service - very slow and inattentive. We waited over an hour for starters, which only came out once we had followed up and ended up going to the bar downstairs to get drinks as no one had served our table for over 45 mins. Would recommend for the food but need more waiting staff in the dining room upstairs as the staff are too overwhelmed.

I have been here numerous times before refurbishment and the Sunday roasts were amazing. This was our first visit in a long while and couldn’t believe the difference. I had the nut wellington and my friend the pork. She did not have a Yorkshire pudding with hers which is standard for a Sunday roast. I did but it was hard. The biggest disappointment was the vegetables however. We got a tiny bowl between us which wouldn’t have been great for 1 let alone 2. It had a couple of tablespoons of cabbage , 4 bits of oats it and 3 carrots. What was worse is that the parsnips and carrots were practically raw and do the parsnips were inedible. The potatoes looked more like boiled than roast. We mentioned it to the waitress who was quite rise interested. It was one of the more expensive pub roasts at £20 per head. There was no cauliflower or broccoli again big standard. At best mediocre. At worse a rip off. So disappointed. It’s a lovely pub with great location and previously was great

I’ve been a loyal customer of this pub for some time now, as it’s a place I usually enjoy visiting. However, my recent experience left me deeply disappointed. I ordered fish and chips, a dish I’ve had here before and always loved. This time, though, the fish was served cold, and the quality was far below what I’ve come to expect. It wasn’t just lukewarm—it was cold enough to suggest it hadn’t been freshly prepared or reheated properly. It was really disheartening because this dish has always been a highlight of my visits. What made the experience worse was how the situation was handled. I mentioned the issue to the staff, expecting some kind of resolution, whether that be a replacement dish, an apology, or even just an acknowledgment of the problem. Instead, I was met with indifference. There was no effort to make things right or even check on the situation further. In the past, the pub manager always went above and beyond to ensure a great experience for customers. I learned during this visit that the manager I trusted and appreciated is no longer working there, and it’s clear the level of care has drastically declined since their departure. It felt like the staff didn’t have the same standards or training to handle customer concerns. Feeling frustrated and undervalued, I decided to just pay the bill and leave. As someone who has always supported this pub, walking out disappointed like that was a tough decision. I genuinely hope the management takes this feedback seriously and addresses the drop in quality and service. This used to be one of my favorite places to eat, but after this experience, I’m uncertain if I’ll return anytime soon

Been here many times, as locals, during peak season, but walked on Christmas Day, with no signs on door indicating otherwise, to find that they’re no longer willing to serve a couple of drinks.

We came here for a bite to eat around lunch time after a long walk. Saw the home made sausage roll and opted for that with proper chips, sticky toffee pudding and cups of tea. The sausage roll was the best. It had nduja spice in it, which gave it a kick and the taste was on another level. The sticky toffee pudding had a salted caramel glaze on it which gave it another dimension. Service was great but would be better with a bit more attention to detail - cutlery with food would nice and sugar with the tea. Definitely would recommend and visit again to try other things on their menu.

Went out of our way to make a trip here as it looked great, but we were left really dissapointed by the service. There were only 2 members of staff, and despite no one else being at the bar, they both didnt serve us. We asked the first man for some drinks, who im assuming was the manager, and halfway through the order he walked off. When he came back he asked his colleague to serve us but she said she was too busy, at which point they started quietly bickering. He begrudgingly served us and wasn't friendly at all. It made us feel pretty uncomfortable, which was a shame as the pub itself is very nice and the view is incredible. We left feeling pretty dissapointed by what could have been a great trip.

Had a really lovely birthday dinner, we came in hoping for a walk in booking, and Beyonce made sure we had a table for 7 of us on a friday night, and looked after us all evening! Thank you Beyonce for taking such great care of our group!

Great pub & location. Very cozy, real fire, lovely interior. Proper old school pub that actually doesn't feel like a Greene King at all. Our waitress Beyonce was very lovely and efficient- and particularly attentive to me being on crutches at the time. Will definitely be back!

Delicious dinner! The steak & raclette pie was amazing! We received 10/10 service from Beyoncé who was super attentive, really great with my friends child too! Can’t wait to come back!
