Rockwater Hove in Brighton and Hove

Patrick, who seated us, was so attentive. I've been to Rockwater a few times, and unfortunately, the service has been terrible—waiting 45 minutes for a coffee. But on this occasion, it was excellent. The service was prompt and quick. Patrick needs a shoutout, as he was superb. He even gave my friend a birthday card. Thank you. Our waitress was excellent too.

Good location- right by the beach with view of the ocean. Service was spectacular and the food was delicious and beautifully presented. Had a great time there.

I order a strawb which was supposed to be freshly pressed with lemon basil strawberry and apple. The lady took the bottle out the fridge and half of it in a small glass with just ice nothing else and that for £6!

Very friendly attentive service. Great location so atmosphere always good feeding off the view. Food was a big let down. My wife paid £23 for halloumi salad which was basically lettuce and grilled halloumi with a dressing. Ingredients basically cost about £2 at a stretch. I had a bacon chop (£24) with mash and hispi cabbage and mustard. It was hard work cutting through meat but tasty enough. Cabbage was limp and unimpressive. Mash was mash and nothing to say. All up, I would say £13/14 would have been reasonable but paid £24. Would not ever visit this place again even though I live locally.

Have been here a few times and it has certainly improved. Had such a nice evening with the kids in the bar/kitchen. Staff were so friendly and kind - food came in good time and was great. Really nice thing to do of an early evening 👍

Service is slow, sporadic and uncoordinated. Some of the staff seem stressed and inexperienced, but a few seem to be holding it together. Perhaps they are understaffed.

Very overpriced in all aspects but great views.

They sat me at a table and then when out of their way and checked the time the table I actually wanted was reserved for and let me move over to it so ce it wasn't for 3 hours It took an hour for someone to take my order and that was only after I looked forlornly at the food of 4 separate families who received their food before my order got taken but arrived after I did I ordered the pint of shrimp that while plated nicely came shell on with no finger bowl or small plates to dispose of shells. Once I had my fill of the rather bland tasting tiny morsels the waiter came and asked me if I wanted a finger bowl The beef was the tenderest I've had with a roast thus far and the Yorkshire pudding helped me to understand why people even order these things. It was light and fluffy and not oily in any way, I'm assuming this was done RIGHT. THE CARROTS and parsnips were both tough and over cooked. The kale was flavourless but done right. After having finally tasted what roastie potatoes are supposed to taste like, there were a major let down There was no gravy and or offering of accompanying sauce Yei hi s in I haven't gotten a top up of water At 1:42 I got a heads up that table I was sitting at would need to be used for the afformentioned reservation so I finally ordered my desert the last course of my 3 course menu and moved to a different table to accommodate the establishment The brownie had the consistency of a thick cake and was a real let down when expecting a brownie Absolutely everyone who arrived after me ate and departed before I finally finished my brownie. At 2:16 the table folks came and I went to the bar to pay because the paycheck never came and after all the table hoping I had no clue where I had actually eaten. Ten minutes standing by the door and someone finally came and sorted my bill. The only to go boxes other than pizza and the problems all felt like back of the house problems instead of wait staff issues If you want a cute atmosphere go, if you're into chasing Disney servers, go. If you're a non confrontational introvert who only has 3 hours to themselves on a weekend, I wouldn't spend that time here

Beautiful venue and location, feels very special and would certainly come back. I ordered a bucks fizz and both times the bartenders were confused about what it was. Maybe they could use a little refresher on some retro drinks! Apart from that the staff I interacted with were very friendly and accommodating. I returned on another occasion and queued for 10 minutes at the hut outside to be told they had ran out of all smoothies. A sign would have been appreciated.

The hot chocolate was really bitter and sour and quite disgusting? Didn't fancy bringing it up, but I could see a lot of kiddies had left theirs too.

Went for Sound Bath Experience. Very lovely place, will go again. It is a large place by the sea front. I was in the back on the ground floor, the lights were lovely and the atmosphere was wonderful.

Hit and miss guys, worth going though, lovely spot, menus just changed, a very good meal last night all round, 10 of us. Today, hmmm, food fell short, still the spot to be for the sea :-) x

We had a really great lunch here on 1/1/24 and enjoyed both the food and service. The Asian fusion menu should not be overlooked as the terrace served incredible food. Having a moderately priced lunch menu, this is a great option for lunch if you are a fan of Japanese or Korean inspired dishes.

One star down due to staff petting customer dogs while serving other customers. Dogs on seats when they should be on the floor.

I had a bit of a trek to get there, with a long walk in the cold and wind, so I was really looking forward to enjoying drinks at the rooftop bar. Unfortunately, it was closed for an event, which was a bit of a letdown. The seating situation wasn’t ideal either, as we had to share a table due to limited seating. The drinks were decent but overly sweet and nothing particularly special. Service was fine—nothing stood out, just standard. On a positive note, the toilets were lovely and well-maintained. Overall, I was a bit disappointed with the experience. Wouldn’t rush back.

We came in on Monday evening, and our waiter Dominik was fantastic. However, it was clear that the restaurant was a bit understaffed and could use a few more team members. We had the fish and chips and the butternut squash salad, both of which were really good. However, the extra chicken added to the salad wasn’t really worth the additional charge. For the lack of staff and the small chicken portions it’s 3 from me!

Ah, Rockwater. A place that promises sea views, good vibes, and a relaxing experience, until you dare try to actually order something. Want to grab a drink and sit outside? Oh, you sweet summer child, how naïve. First, navigate the bureaucratic labyrinth of their excessively over-engineered ordering system. A QR code to order from your seat? Don’t be ridiculous. Instead, take a scenic 20-meter detour to queue in front of an outdoor shack, expertly positioned to obstruct pedestrians just trying to enjoy a walk on the promenade. Feeling peckish? A little snack to go with your drink? Fries? Nuts? Surely that’s allowed? Nope. That level of freedom would be absolute chaos. Food must be consumed in a designated zone within the bar, because carrying a bowl of fries outside would, apparently, unravel the very fabric of civilization. Unless, of course, you’ve reserved a posh table in advance. Then, and only then, you may be deemed worthy of both food and seating. So, if you enjoy stunning views, bafflingly complex ordering systems, and rules that seem designed by a committee of control freaks, Rockwater is your place. For everyone else? Just bring a flask and a snack and sit on the beach like a normal human being.

The music is musac, monotonous and not suitable for a relaxing daytime beach club vibe. More about a nightclub wind up time. Please some more actual music which is relaxing not uptempo techno vibe A great pity as the venue, food, people, decor is fabulous xx

We had a Sunday roast here a few weeks ago, for my son's 10th Birthday and really enjoyed our experience. We were a largish table, but there were no problems with any of our food ordering, dietary requests, and everything was still on the menu during a busy Sunday service too. The RW team left a birthday card on the table for our son too, which was very sweet. The food was really good, our server Alex (I think she was off travelling the following week) was delightful, funny, professional and very good at her job. The atmosphere was great, also fab for people watching... I think the wine is a touch pricy per bottle, but I guess that's the world we live in now and people do pay it. Overall it really was a great experience and I would highly recommend.

Great food with lovely sea views. Can recommend the chicken wings! The Cesar Salad is overpriced for cos lettuce, some parmasan and croutons! Clean toilets, helpful staff! Recommend a visit.

I came here a couple times this week and both occasions were lovely, the bartenders serving (Hannah on Thursday and Phoebe today) were amazing, giving lots of recommendations! It is sad to say though that the experience would’ve been better if there were more staff. Lots of people waiting to be served and even saw someone walk out after waiting too long.

I visited Rockwater recently with my mum, and unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. We found a table piled with dirty dishes, making the table number unreadable. When I went to order, the server was abrupt and unhelpful, making it clear she didn’t want to be there. She also failed to send our order to the kitchen, and after waiting 40 minutes, we were told our food had "sold out now". Sadly, this isn’t my first poor service experience at Rockwater. The service often feels disorganised and unwelcoming. Looking at other reviews, I know I’m not alone in this. Better staff training could make a real difference. I emailed them and they didn't even respond. They literally don't care at any level. There are many other places in Brighton that are far more deserving of custom.

Stopped here on an impulse while walking along the seafront, great atmosphere, great views and the coffee was very good too. Didn't have food but the menu looked great. Will be returning to try breakfast another time. Great location, I could stare at the sea forever from their amazing balcony. Forgot to take photos, was living in the moment on this one, next time Googlers, next time... 😊 Updating to say we had breakfast! And it was amazing! We sat upstairs and had an amazing view of the sea, well worth a visit!

Best Fish and Chips I've ever had I think. Big claim, but honestly, it was good. Something about the batter, how it was cooked, the mint peas. It was serious. Stunning location and amazing service. Will come back again and again. Roasts were good as well. Potatoes were "fluffy but not aneamic". Carrots were "really good" and the Yorkshire's "weren't half bad either".

omg not to be dramatic but I had one of the best afternoons of my life there! After months of cloudy grayness the sun was spectacular (which is not Rockwater's doing to be fair haha) but my god did that set us up for what was to come. The beautiful Alex R, with her gorgeous purple hair, was an absolute pleasure to deal with and honestly, elevated my whole experience so much that it has cemented my recent thoughts about moving to Hove! The lychee martini(s) I had were delicious and my burger was perfect. My friend and I had the absolute perfect afternoon, highly recommended. Ok, the atmosphere is good and the food is ok BUT.... I feel like I've just been robbed! Hot chocolates for the kids at £4 per hot chocolate. Do you want cream and marshmallows? Yes please.... we wont tell you that we will add on another £1.50 for cream and £1.50 for marshmallows. That was £7 for a less than average hot chocolate!!! Oh and they will automatically add the service charge on. Just short of £40 for a quick few hot chocolates and chips... wow. Won't eat here again.

Food... Hmm well I've had better burgers at pubs in remote areas. Waitress was nice too us and food came in a decent time. I guess I'm more for hearty food than half trying to be fancy.

Was in last night. Took a while to even be brought menus once seated then 15 minutes for someone to take the drinks order. Sat next to a wall so felt squashed and dark. Starters took a long time to come out and managed to move tables after finished starters. No one checked up on us after food was served as would’ve liked more drinks but waiters weren’t interested. Great food but absolutely piss poor service, would’ve expected better for £50 a head. No one even said thank you or bye when we left. Only thing making the review 2 stars was the quality of the food.

Really lovely chilled afternoon having a juice, coffee and some food. I was really looked after by the team. The atmosphere and ambiance was perfect. I loved the Rouge Juice. The Dirty Chai was delicious. I had the Caesar Salad and it was fresh and tasty.

The lunch menu not many seafood options….its not a seafood restaurant now. Comfortable seats and good service except the over £10 wine that wine glass came with lip print. Second floor has indoor and outdoor seats with ocean view.

More recently service is much improved, no zombie staff anymore. I’m just disappointed that they can’t seem to cook pasta without over cooking it! It’s usually pre cooked and then finished off when needed. Problem with that is the pasta tends to lose its texture and can become too soft! I sent the same dish back twice as it was the same as the first. I walked out! Service was friendly though.

I hope this feedback will be taken constructively to improve future guest experiences. Upon our arrival, we were directed to our table promptly. However, after some time, I enquired about the welcome champagne, which we expected based on prior experiences at similar venues. Typically, a reception with welcome drinks precedes being shown to the table. It would be clearer to guests if your text specified: "Upon arrival at your table and when you are ready to order, we will bring you your welcome drink." Lack of Live Music I was disappointed to notice the absence of live music. Based on your description, I had expected a singer or a light band to create a relaxed atmosphere. Instead, I was informed that the entertainment was “piped-in music,” which, by definition, is not live music. Live music is created in real-time by performers. Even after raising this point, I was told the DJ was "live." A DJ pressing play is not live music either. Service Delays The service was unfortunately very slow. Our starters arrived after an hour and 15 minutes, which was a significant wait. However, I must commend the food itself, which was enjoyable, and the staff, who were pleasant throughout. The venue has potential, but this service pace needs attention to align with the high expectations set by your brand. Disappointing New Year’s Eve Celebration Your text promised: "A kitchen party, where we’ll gather everyone together just before midnight to raise a toast and ring in the New Year." This suggested some form of organised management or an announcement to bring the guests together. However, what occurred was disappointing and chaotic. My wife and I, along with other guests, were dressed elegantly for a special evening. Unfortunately, we encountered a very different atmosphere upon moving to the party area. Guests warned us of scruffy and unsavory individuals downstairs, which was confirmed upon arrival. It felt more like an informal and unregulated gathering than the classy event we had anticipated. More akin to a drug dealing night club by the looks of some of the cliente. Despite trying to embrace the party spirit, the DJ repeatedly used inappropriate language, shouting things like “Get on the f***ing dance floor.” This tone was highly unprofessional and not what we expected for the premium price of £240. We were disgusted at being spoken to like that. When midnight approached, the countdown was poorly organised, with a mumbled announcement, no “Auld Lang Syne,” and a general lack of effort to create a memorable moment. It felt like a basic disco, not the special evening we had been promised. Overall Experience Other guests I spoke to echoed my sentiments. Many chose to remain in the restaurant rather than join the chaotic and unrefined party downstairs. We felt misled by the event description and did not receive the premium experience we paid for. Ultimately, the evening fell far short of expectations.

Great atmosphere and view. Coffee was delicious. Not much Vegan food on the menu for breakfast, but the plant-based croissant they have is delicious.

Had another great meal at Rockwater Hove tonight - despite being New Years Day and extremely busy, the staff looking after us were really attentive. Food was excellent, perfectly mixed Margaritas and service with a smile - thanks Raffa, Jamie and Daniel. Will be back soon!

the cashier refused to let me order because of my looks. I asked for the menu and the cashier gave me a look from top to bottom and roughly handed me the menu, acting confused. I had a look and then she said that they don't take orders anymore. Left the resturaunt feeling devastated and rejected

Today's lunch at Rockwater Hove was wonderful. Our waitress, Mirabelle, was both efficient and professional. My daughter and I were blessed to have the last two 'catches of the day' (the monkfish). This was the best fish dish for 2024! We'll be back....

Love it here! Great food, great service, lovely decor, lovely atmosphere! My sister had the 'small dish' of a terrine with rabbit & pork with a chutney relish. Delicious she said. The mushroom burgers were very flavoursome & we had 2 puddings. The brownie was best I've ever tasted, rich & moist. My apple & rhubarb crumble with hazelnut cream was full of fruit, & just the right amount of crumble, yum & my sis had a bread & butter rum cocktail which was really smooth & tasty 😋 We WILL be back !!

I popped in here for a quick drink and the staff were just absolutely lovely and the menu was really nice. It has a beautiful view of the seafront and lovely ambiance. Highly recommend.

Rockwater is constantly trying new ideas. The latest is a big outdoor screen on the bare grass or back to screen Wimbledon and then more events during the summer. The meeting place on the seafront... Job the fun!!!

I recently visited Rockwater for a client meeting, and the team couldn’t have been more helpful. A special shout-out to Noella, who went above and beyond to ensure I had a quiet space. With the downstairs area closed and no backup plan, she accommodated us in a spot within the bustling restaurant during the Christmas rush. Nothing was a problem, making sure we were well taken care of attentive, proactive and highly service-focused. Five stars!

Mix up with booking plus food had to be sent back as not hot enough but redeemed by lovely waiter ! The food was excellent once reheated. This top floor area was mainly empty ....so atmosphere was limited to 3 tables eating & 3 or so of drinkers with kids & dogs....

For the second year in a row I’d booked to go on my anniversary in the terrace restaurant and again they cancelled my booking, I can only assume they got a Christmas booking like they did the year before. I’ve been before and the foods not great and it’s slightly pretentious

Excellent service nice atmosphere

Squashed onto a table the size of a postage stamp whilst bigger tables remained free the whole time we were there. I had the neighbouring tables pram right by me. Table wasnt actually big enough to take the plates of food for 2 people. Ridiculous! Made to feel like second class citizens although we were paying customers like everyone else . When will restaurants treat present, paying customers better than those that might turn up?!! The hostess didn't see our point of view or make any attempt to apologise for how we were treated. Guess what? Won't be going back.

Popped in for coffee & bacon brioche bun. Missed out on the food as kitchen closed for swap between breakfast & lunch. Bit disappointing but lovely just to sit and admire the sea view.

We visited today for the launch of their Sunday roasts. 2 adults one child and our dog, we sat upstairs on the roof terrace, the servers were very attentive, fresh water was given to our dog, we had complimentary wine offered to us for this occasion as it was the launch of their roast diner menu. The food was delicious, we each had a starter and a main for £34 each (excellent value for the quality and portion size) the atmosphere and aesthetic within the rock water is very appealing. We have only been once before and it was just as good now as it was as then! we look forward to visiting again.

Last night we had a fabulous evening tasting the new roof terrace menu the seafood platter/Sharing plate was amazing. You get six oysters huge king prawns, two crab pots, plus clams, mussels , samphire and bread. Nothing was too much trouble including one of our party having a severe allergy. The service was really good and the managers were super attentive checking we were enjoying the food. We then went to the lodge for jazz, which was cozy and fun a fantastic evening all round!

Where to start? Truly a 10/10 experience. Went to celebrate my anniversary & they handed us a hand-written anniversary card upon arrival. The staff were attentive and kind, our waiter Oliver was wonderful. The starters right through to the deserts were nothing short of exquisite. Sourdough bread & butter, Pulled Beef Croquettes, Chicken Supreme & Ox Cheek all highly recommended. Absolute perfection.

Came in earlier with my friend, was served by a lovely gentleman called Louis behind the bar. Very warming service and lovely coffees. Will defiantly go again soon!

Great place to visit for a drink or a meal or both. All the staff were really friendly and the service was excellent. Just lost a star coz I found the battered fish a bit tasteless. But will definitely be going back. Cocktails excellent too.

Great quality food and great location but over priced. If you have fish of the day on the menu it would make sense for the staff to say what it was when bringing the menu as we had to wait for them to return to take our order to ask as we couldn't get their attention, but then weren't ready to order! We had steak which came with a few tomatoes and salad garnish, but we had to pay £4 for a very small tin of fries and £2.50 for sauce each... who would have steak without the additions that every other restaurant I've ever been to includes in the price! Two of us had two courses and two drinks each and the bill came to over £140 which I think is steep for what it was.

A bit loud in there with some music running in the background, which i find unnecessary. Not busy and therefore lots of echoing. Friendly staff and polite.

Booked tickets for the Halloween party. If this was your first time, you probably thought this was great. I came last year and that was fantastic. This year was nothing compared to that. There were no welcome drinks included in the entry price, no live entertainment, only a dj (who wasn't particularly good), only 4 types of Halloween cocktails, and no ordinary cocktail menu. Way overpriced and half size portions. Last year, the cocktail selection, presentation, and size were amazing. The service was rushed and chaotic. One of my friends wasn't charged in one round, and the next round, they not only made me the wrong cocktail, but they wanted to take payments twice from me. It was no effot put in this year. Just disappointed 😞 I don't think we will be booking next year.

The service was particularly welcome – relaxed and friendly but courteous too. Carrot cake cocktail a little disappointing for the price, but a good choice of low or zero alcohol drinks. Good vegan cassoulet, and I'm told the fish 'n chips were well above average. Thanks for a lovely evening.

Really disappointing visit this weekend. We arrived Saturday morning to the Lodge downstairs and we were immediately met by a very unwelcoming man - it very much felt like he didn’t want us to come in. We went to sit down in the sofa area but he told us it was reserved and they’d be arriving in 30 minutes so there wasn’t anywhere for us to sit down, he made no effort to suggest anywhere else to sit (we were a group of 4 adults and 2 children). There was no reserved sign on the table which was odd, and we decided to sit there anyway until the people who’d booked arrived. We then moved to another table after 30 minutes but no one showed up for this supposedly reserved table. We noticed the man also didn’t greet anyone else walking in the door the whole time we were there either. Another group with children came and sat down as we were leaving and we heard him approach them at the table and say the same to them, that they’d need to leave soon as he needed the table back for people arriving in 30 minutes. I have also tried to book a table downstairs before and been told you can only book upstairs. Very odd experience that made us all feel really uncomfortable.

Arrived at 11.45 for a pre lunch drink and nibbles. No peanuts available nor any other snack as not twelve o'clock yet! Although we did get a few olives for the princely sum of £5. But there's more. We had a small glass of wine and a Guinness total bill £27.80!!! Fleeced! Ridiculous!

Utterly fantastic. Food excellent, service first class and atmosphere relaxed and fun. A wonderful night from start to finish.

Great location and very popular. We had a table booked, but still had to wait, although we were made very welcome. Once we were seated, it went downhill. Service was intermittent and slow. We had to send a pizza back because it was cold, and the sea bass and trout were overcooked. We had to chase our wine order 3 times, and the response was, "we're busy, do you want to cancel it!" Our hosts were apologetic, but the restaurant was not. We will not go back I'm afraid.
