Rockfish - Takeaway in South Hams

Can be a little hit and miss with quality and food temperature.

The main restaurant (dine in) was full, with a waiting time of 45minutes+, so as it was a warm sunny day (hence Dartmouth being full of visitors and the car parks full too) we decided to go for the takeaway instead. Served right away. 5 minute wait for the best haddock and chips for a very long time. The food came in the standard box placed inside a large thick carrier bag. Good sized portion, with a slice of lemon. Walked along to Bayards Cove and enjoyed our meal in the sunshine.

Ye brilliant stuff. Even do everything in Gluten Free. Banging that. Portions were a little small for our Midlands appetite but never mind.

Tomorrows fish is still in the freezer !! enough said, overpriced rubbish. Not fresh and certainly Not good quality. Not our first visit but certainly the last.

An excellent fish and chip shop based in Dartmouth. Unfortunately I didn’t take any pictures of the food as I had it as takeaway and a photo wouldn’t do it justice. It’s one of the best fish and chip takeaways I’ve been to in a very long time. Throughly recommended if you happen to be in Dartmouth.

Best fish and chips ever! My partner preferred his takeaway tonight than the one we ate yesterday In Rockfish restaurant in Dartmouth, and that was still excellent. I had the freshly caught plaice from Brixham, and my partner had cod. We ate it on the quay at Bayards Cove - and the seagulls stayed away from us.

I expected a good fish restaurant chain to be capable of making half decent fish and chips. Apparently not. 60% soggy batter, 40% overcooked small fish filet. Chips were ok. The fish was probably fresh but couldn’t taste it over all the batter and oil. £33 for 1 cod, 1 haddock, 1 chips and a large portion of disappointment. Had the same meal at Catch in Looe 2 days ago which was fantastic. Hardly seemed like the same meal. The staff were all friendly.

Excellent takeaway fish and chips, gluten free available and decent size portions. Perfectly cooked chips crisp and golden. Even better on a wet rainy day.

Tricky one considering how busy these guys were and FOH smashed it, consider how busy it was when we popped in. Wait wasn't too long. The food fell short. IMO, tad over priced and the portion sizes weren't great and a tad tasteless

Very good fish and chips with friendly service

Very very good fish and chips! Fresh and tasty, crispy, just pretty much perfect! The whole family really enjoyed it! There are plenty of benches along the embankment about 2 minutes walk where you can sit and eat while watching the boats on the river. Highly recommended.

Wow - Brilliant Cod & Chips, mushy peas & homemade tartare sauce. The cod was so fresh! Tasty Batter! Young friendly efficient staff had everything under control with a long queue out into the street - be prepared to queue. The wait is certainly worth it.!! Perhaps the Best Fish & Chips in South Devon. Sit on the quay outside the Fish & Chip takeaway is a bonus on a sunny day!

Rockfish is an excellent fish and chip shop, but it is very expensive for what it is.

Very strange they refuse to take telephone orders. Everyone else seems to manage to be able to.

This is a takeaway that is more expensive than some local restaurants for fish and chips. Cod and chips @£16.95, Haddock was £11.95 a summer special. Not a big portion of haddock but it was nice the chips small average. Cod was very nice. No salt and vinegar as requested. I'd expect more for the price. Would not go again.

My daughter had food poisoning after having fish and chips from here. Upset disappointed and put off by it as it’s dented our 5 day stay in Devon.

A nice fish and chip take away close to benches in Bayard’s Cove. My Haddock and Chips was fantastic and good value at £11.95 for a big portion. My wife had the child’s portion which was perfect.

Ordered scampi and got small pieces of breaded fish

We have recently visited Rockfish takeaway in Dartmouth again. Chips were very good and food in the past was always good. But I am giving three stars because we ordered scampi and what we got was just pieces of fish deep fried. This was quite disappointing as this is misselling. If we wanted fish we would get fish and chips. Shame

Such a shame to have such soggy chips, even if the portion size is good. More like mash potato. They weren't busy either so no excuse. Mich Tonks. If you had a portion of your chips, I don't think you would be proud of them Haddock was good. Friendly staff.

We're holidaying in Devon and visited Dartmouth today. Our daughter wanted "Street food" for lunch and opted for takeaway fish and chips. We chose Rockfish takeaway and enjoyed the hake and chips. It was extremely nice and good value for money, especially as we sat on a bench by the Quay in the sunshine 🌞 Well recommended!

Really good quality fish and chips from Rockfish. Well worth paying the extra price from other other outlets in the town. The portions were HUGE and cooked to perfection. Will be back next time we're in Dartmouth

A good selection of food cooked to a high standard and friendly staff. A little bit pricey , fish and chips x 3 cans of coke x 3 and 3 curry sauces come to £56

The staff was very friendly. Service was quick, and quality was well worth the money.

On a sunny Sunday, we were very hungry and ready for some fish and chips. We were late for lunch at about 2.30. The shop was fairly quiet, my order was taken quickly and the man serving was friendly. I was surprised to see plaice on the menu as this has become a rarity in fish and chip shops... I quickly ordered the plaice it being my favourite. Our order also had sausage and chips (battered-was offered the choice), coffee and chips, mushy peas, curried mushy peas and an ailio. We weren't disappointed. The food was piping hot even after a short drive back, and was delicious. The fish was perfectly cooked and the batter was not in any way greasy. The chips were also well cooked and tasty. The sausages were good quality which was evident in the speed that my son devoured them! Slightly more than we normally pay for fish and chips back home but portion size was good.

Tastless fish, if you donot ask you will not get any veggies with your f&c menu. Service is at best grumpy.

The girl was very helpful, however £29:50 for cold food is not acceptable, We were the only ones in there and are staying less than 2 mins away, good job we had a microwave, sorry we won't be back.

So this a no frills Cafe style operation. With takeaway one side cafe the other. Cod and chips EXCELLENT THICK FISH THIN BATTER. COOKED TO ORDER. My only negative food is good but rely on the sachet tartar sauce which is not bad but the fish is so good its the weakest part of meal. Portion size is good. Would I return resounding YES BAY beer gold very good compliments meal. 20.50gbp

Food good when it was finally ready. Enormous queue though (30 minutes+ waiting to be served) so fast food it isn't.

Really disappointing today. Normally great but chips been left under the heat lamps too long making them dry and hard.

The BEST chip shop food I have ever had. Visited Dartmouth for the day, ending with a visit to Rockfish Takeaway. I now need to visit again before going home. The halloumi is the best halloumi I have ever had.

We were tight on time and they served us within 10 minutes delicious Haddock.and chips, one portion between us as we didnt want a big portion each. Superb food and staff.

Fancied some fish and chips to wander along the harbour with and came across Rockfish restaurant, we wanted a take away so the guy pointed us around the corner to their take away shop. Bought Haddock and Chips and got to say was the best I've had in a very long time!! Definitely worth a visit, thank you 👍

Come to Dartmouth every year and always grab a takeaway from here. Front of house staff (girl with glasses) was so polite and cheerful. Food was absolutely bang on! Freshest fish 👌🏻 Good job guys!

Best fish and chips in the country

Been trying some of the chippies in Brixham and I keep coming back here! The fish is way better than anywhere else, portion size is a bit smaller but I believe in quality not quantity. Lovely staff, a cracking local IPA and cool playlist….oh, and a burning fire 🔥

Your box said best enjoyed with a view of the sea! It would have been more enjoyed if my order was complete! Also over priced, over greasy and not enjoyed at all.

Absolutely the best in years ,a little dearer than some but well worth the price Light crispy batter and fresh flakes of white fish . Chips were lovely and not a sign of any grease All cooked to order and well worth the wait My friend had battered sausage and there were two tast sausages . Would definitely go back and happy to recommend.

We always come to Dartmouth and always eat here Fish and Chips were as always excellent and even had Haddock our fish of choice Curry and Peas also fab Only issue is coming from Yorkshire where Fish and Chips are excellent - the price is double !!!! Need to keep an eye on costs and be price sensitive

Rockfish takeaway ( but nothing to takeaway) bearing in mind this is actually on the huge fish market that lands tons of fish every day and right next to the takeaway is Rockfish’s own shop to buy all kinds of fish, called into the takeaway a couple of hours before it was due to close as we fancied some prawns, whitebait and halloumi from the small takeaway menu , and again bear in mind this is on possibly the biggest fish market in Great Britain, Sorry we don’t have any prawns oh or whitebait oh and no halloumi, luckily when we then went to the kebab house where they didn’t say sorry we don’t have any kebabs

Amazing atmosphere, with very friendly and helpful staff, the only downside is that they don't do fishcakes. Expect delectable, crisp and golden brown chips!

This was part of my mothers bucket list a day out in Dartmouth with the best fish and chips ! Well so disappointed the table was right near toilet and kitchen , when the food came it was so small we was both hungry after and didn’t want to fill up on bottomless chips . The staff was nice ,however on trying to leave ,the disabled wheeler we had was put behind the door with pushchairs we had to try and get it out and lift it across the table in front of us with people dining at it ,and the door was not easy to open having to hold up and deal with a disabled person it would of been nice a member of staff to help just felt disappointed that rockfish had taken our money and we was left to struggle . Not what I expected

Best fish and chips! Came from Sidmouth to enjoy Dartmouth, but also because of Rockfish. The fish and chips have always been so nice here. Staff also friendly and efficient. Liked how the guy came outside for people awaiting their orders to call their name. Cannot wait for their presence in Sidmouth,where we holiday frequently- wont be a day too soon.

Having spent the journey over to the regatta fireworks reading previous reviews, we decided not to go. A lady on the bus convinced us otherwise. Have to say we were thrilled we went. Not the best fish & chips we’ve ever had but damn close. Enormous portions. Not too greasy. Tasty, and fresh. I disagree with all the negative reviews and this was a busy night. The size of the queue speaks for itself!

Fantastic fresh catch of the day and the tempura prawns were huge! Tasty and good value for a quick bite there at 12 when it opened- queue quickly formed behind us, but service was quick.

Slightly bougie - aoli and pellegrino are served - but don't be put off by that. The chips are some of the best chipshop style chips I've had - and I'm from a seaside town.

Fantastic to find a totally Gluten Free fish and chip shop with the owner fully aware of Coeliac requirements and Coeliac UK accredited. We had Cod and Chips which was delicious and it made our day. Highly recommended.

Came here twice on our holiday and both times our takeaway meals were excellent. Lovely crispy batter on the cod. Chunky white flakes of fish. The chips were not soggy and the sausage is a good quality. Very friendly staff too

Honestly.. one of the best portions of fish and chips ever. We had Hake and chips and shared some prawns. All was so tasty. Their sauses were so good. The staff member who served me was really friendly and helpful. Quick and effective. Plus my wife got a Gand T. So all good.

We always look forward to staying in Dartmouth and visiting the Rockfish takeaway is one of our routine eateries. We both had cod and chips with curry sauce. It has always been more expensive but we usually don’t mind as the food has been good quality and tasty. Sadly on our most recent visit, the fish was very average and the batter heavy and tasteless. We paid a lot of money for an average meal something we will not be doing again.

Ordered 2 halloumi and chips and two curry sauces. Came to £25, which I wouldn’t have minded paying if it was nice! But the halloumi wasn’t cooked (it was apparently battered, but there wasn’t any batter?) and you only got 4 very small sticks of it. The chips were nice, but the portion sizing was skimpy. The curry sauce was overwhelmingly salty and not your traditional curry sauce, it wasn’t very nice at all. All in all extremely overpriced, not that tasty and certainly won’t be going to any rockfish again as this is the second time we have chanced it and haven’t been impressed either time.

Quite possibly the smallest portion of chips available in Europe (I would say about 1/4 of a normal portion of chips) and they are charging £3.50 for it. They should wear masks. Robbing bunch of &£@#;::;

The most appalling food we have ever eaten! It was disgusting. I ordered 2 kids meals and they were in edible..they were sausage and chips, the sausages were battered and so hard my grandchildren couldn't eat them The chips were rotten and the oil tasted horrible. My husband and I shared fish and chips and again it was so greasy and tasted vile. My husband were both poorly after our meal.

Popular place, but I'm not sure why. We ordered just 2 simple fish and chips, and we were a bit disappointed, as the chips were not very crispy and the fish was really oily. Prices are astronomical for what you get! For the price you could go to a nice restaurant...

I ordered four portions of chips and three curry sauces mid afternoon. I asked for salt and vinegar when I placed the order and the staff also asked if I wanted salt and vinegar, to which I said yes....unyet I had none? The chips were very hot served in paper bags but they were in one soft clump. Shaking of the bags failed to separate them and when we tried to pull any chips out they broke and were stuck together. Absolutely shocking. Off day or not I strongly advise people to seek other chip shops.

Readily accessible close to a ferry landing this is a popular fish and chip take away. Also does more than fish and chips but that is the most popular and served in a slick process. Good food and taking them to eat on a bench by the Dart is rather nice.

Whilst I appreciate the world we live I at the moment, this take away was quite expensive. We had great food but it wasn’t cheap. I had 4 small pieces of halloumi with a dip that was mega money for the portion size. The fish and chips were good. The family of 5 infringe of me had 5 portions of fish and chips with drink and spent £80! Good but not cheap

Nice fish and chips and would have deserved a higher score but for them being offensively pricey. It's £14.50 for cod and chips (takeaway, not eat in just to clarify) and they are no better than the ones from our local chippy in Newbury that cost £7.50. I get that it's in a nice location and you expect to pay more for that but when they charge 40p for a sachet of ketchup, then you know they're taking the Mickey!

The worst bag of chips I've ever had. Pale and mushy like mash patatoes. Fry once, then again for that crisp golden chip. And I think the packaging contributes to the condensation within, steaming the so called chip. Serve in a cone.

A fairly basic but excellent fish'n'chip shop. They get fresh fish every day, the food is tasty (but not cordon bleu). Staff quick and friendly, sea charts on the walls. One of 3 chippies in town, and worth the 5 minute walk. (Only a few high chairs - to sit down for a meal, try the Rockfish restaurant on the front.)

If you're by the sea you have to have Fish & Chips, it's the law. I only like Cod, or so I thought. I was disappointed when told they didn't have any because they only sell sustainable fish and when we visited, Cod wasn't sustainable....
