Rockfish in Plymouth

What a little gem of a fish restaurant. The service was excellent, and the staff were attentive. Highly recommend the sea bream with greek salad. It was gorgeous. Washed down with a lively red wine. Will definitely recommend it, and we will definitely be returning. 😋👌😁

Rockfish is a gem by the water — relaxed, lively atmosphere and seriously fresh seafood. We went for the fish of the day, which was John Dory, and it was cooked to perfection: delicate, flavorful, and beautifully presented. One of the best parts? Unlimited French fries, crisp and golden, which perfectly complemented the fish. The setting near the port adds to the charm, making it a great spot for a casual yet quality meal.

Great fresh fish catch selection but preparation and presentation lacking considering the cost of a meal. Average of 40 ISH pound per person we expected fresh salads, quality sides (chips etc) and we also expected better service. We had to ask about catches of the day and left with no idea how bottomless chips work etc because no explanation offered. In short, great fish but a premium price and average service/accompaniments.

We had such a fun evening. The food was super fresh. Prompt service. Great value. We spent less than we thought!

What a place for food. Menu is extensive, and helpful waitress ran through the specials in detail. All the food was fresh tasting and very tasty. Wine was reasonable on price but good on taste. Friendly family atmosphere, and there was no pressure to leave, welcomed as I had to be rolled out from over eating

I visited the restaurant twice during the easter weekend of 2025. I have had certainly the most delicious fish in the UK and probably best food I ever ate in the UK.

Visited here after spending the morning at the National Aquarium. We were going to get something at the Aquarium's café but spotted Rockfish through the window and decided to give it a try. We had a nice welcome, and almost immediately asked about food allergies, which was reassuring (although none of us had any). The restaurant has large windows all around offering interesting views out to the marina area surrounding it. The staff were attentive without being intrusive, and explained about the day's catch just before taking our order. They have a good selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, including low and zero-alcohol beers. Everything on the menu is sustainably sourced - their own fishing boat catches pretty much all the fish they serve (some comes from further afield). For example, their scallops are hand-dived. Pricing is a little on the high side, but is to be expected given the quality and responsible sourcing ethos. There is a chicken option on the menu, but I didn't spot a vegetarian or vegan one. Worth checking the menu online to be sure if this is a necessity. Dessert options are decent. I had a Creme Bruleé which got a solid 9/10 (I'm very particular about this dessert, so it was a relief to find a good one!). The summer deck seating area looks like it'll be really nice once the weather warms up. I'd Highly recommend Rockfish if you like your seafood.

We had an overnight stay in Plymouth and as we had previously been to Rockfish on Poole Quay we decided to book for Rockfish Plymouth. And what an excellent evening we had. It has a great location next to The Aquarium by the Marina, with table seats giving a lovely view out over the Waterfront area. It has a lovely relaxed ambience about it, the waiting staff were friendly and attentive and the food is excellent, with plenty of choice, particularly the daily 'specials'. If we find ourselves in Plymouth again, we would certainly re-visit Rockfish.

Rockfish is hands down one of the best seafood spots around. The freshness of the food, the coastal vibe, and the consistently brilliant service make every visit feel like a treat. The staff are warm, attentive, and genuinely care that you’re having a great time—something that’s becoming rare these days. The menu is packed with sustainably sourced seafood cooked to perfection, and there’s a real sense of pride in everything they serve. Whether it’s the classic fish and chips or something a bit more adventurous, it never disappoints. That said… one small gripe: why isn’t the Rockfish lager on tap in the restaurant? It’s brewed specifically for Rockfish, and it’s absolutely spot on—crisp, refreshing, and the perfect pairing for fish. But strangely, it’s only available on tap next door at their premises, not in the actual restaurant. It just doesn’t quite make sense! Still, that’s a small bump in what’s otherwise a truly top-tier experience. Rockfish gets so much right—it’s just crying out for that perfect pint to go with the perfect plate

Lovely experience after an aquarium visit, it's right next door. Short walk to the famous mayflower steps and with a lovely outdoors area. Good beer options and lovely food cooked to perfection. I had the prawn tempura and the plaice . Both great.

Really nice sitting outside and eating really nice fish and chips. On selected Fridays there is a fish and chips special for only £3, excellent quality and value. The Friday deal is now £5 for haddock and chips, half price meal and excellent quality and value. Now the traditional Friday is on a Tuesday, absolutely excellent as always. Hake tonight, what a delicious treat.

Decided we’d come to Barbican for cheap fish and chips which we take into the Dolphin to have with several pints of Bass, But the evening turned out very differently. Friday 11 April everywhere was rammed. Like a bank holiday even though Good Friday is not for a week. Very long queues outside the chip shops, no space to park or even pause to pick up a takeaway. We eventually found an eat in slot online at Rockfish and were finally able to find a parking space on that side. Plenty of customers but not heaving, a few spare tables, polite quick service. Hake was their fish and chip component and it was good. We had half a litre of white because one of us was driving. So no beers. A good deal more expensive than we’d intended for our casual supper plan but we had a god time.

We had a lovely lunch here, it’s a beautiful spot and the weather was lovely. The staff are good and helpful and there is a varied selection of fresh fish. Also the chips and salad were good. Two of us had the chargrilled sea bream, it was absolutely stunning. If you like fish this is the place to go.

I’m only giving this 4 stars because there is no alcohol on tap in the restaurant. Apart from that food is fantastic, service is excellent. Little pricey but worth it.

Had a wonderful dinner at Rockfish in Plymouth. Took servers recommendations for dinner and the food was amazing. Wonderfully cooked, and the flavours were strong enough to enhance the fish but subtle enough to let the fish shine through. Our server Nicola was amazing. So attentive and happy to help with all our requests and questions. Because of Nicola's exceptional service and the wonderful food, we decided to go back the next day for a late lunch. Highly recommended. Thank you chefs for the amazing food. Thank you Nicola for the amazing service. Don't miss out. Go there.

We are frequent visitors to Rockfish but this was our first time here at Plymouth. It was my Birthday treat and we went for the Madras mussels (this is the height of the 6 week prime mussel season) and the tinned Mackeral. Both were sublimely delicious, the mussels we plump, juicy and sweet, don’t think tinned fish here is like tinned supermarket fish, it is hand fileted and hand packed and is devine. We will be trying the sardines and tuna too at some point. I usually go for battered fish as they do it gluten and dairy free which is rare. This time tho I fancied the day fish whole grilled John Dory which was in the sea yesterday, you won’t find fish fresher unless you catch it yourself. My wife had the battered Hake which is always great. Try something different too, you won’t regret it.

First time at this rockfish after visiting a few others. Great location and views. The staff were spot on the whole meal so no faults there. I would recommend trying the specials at a rockfish which the waiters go through with you before ordering. I had the John Dorey which looks scary but was fantastic. I mean just look up a picture of it! I 100% wouldn't have had it if not for the fabulous waiter. The unlimited chips are a steal as well. Shame about the mandatory vegan mayo though awful stuff hence the dropped star (yes it was that bad).

Really good service and has a beautiful view! The food was great but very very pricey for what it is. We got the mussels as a starter (marinière) which were in season. Portion size slightly on the small side, bread was ok. We also got the grilled sardines as a starter again was great but quite pricey for portion. We then got the grilled cuttlefish which was very very tasty and the breaded monkfish which was equally tasty but again very pricey. Fries were very nice. We are grateful we came with a £50 gift voucher otherwise we would probably choose a different fish restaurant in Plymouth ☺️

Took a business contact here for dinner on 4th March, amazing food, perfect service. The John Dory was sublime.

The hake and haddock were delicious, all the staff were very friendly and accommdating to our 1-year-old baby and even bought her some extra garden peas as she loved them so much. Nicola in particular was very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you for a delicious meal, we would definitely recommend.

Staff were very accommodating and it was a lovely atmosphere. I like the addition of the menu written on the table. Food was good but nothing phenomenal, just decent fish and chips. Nicola was particularly friendly and very welcoming! Thank you!

Visited on 6 Feb. Wife and stepson had oysters. Both were ill with food poisoning. This does not appear to be the first instance of this. Perhaps food hygiene inspection is warranted again!?

We ordered a seafood platter for two with two sides, and the portion size was small and too salty. The atmosphere was lovely and there were different types of fish and seafood to choose from.

‏The staff were very nice and polite, and the food had a beautiful presentation. However, after eating there, my husband and I got sick for two days. This makes me question the quality of the ingredients they used.

We came in because of the "kids eat free" offer after a day at the aquarium and I'm glad we did. Food was superb and service excellent -- waitstaff and management took care of us brilliantly. Comfortable and warm restaurant, loved it. Will visit again.

We went for dinner over the Christmas holidays. Excellent food and price in line with the quality. We had already been on two other occasions. Always perfect. The mixed fried fish and vegetables are recommended.

Great service, atmosphere and more importantly food! Oysters were large and plump! Gurnard was nicely charred and the bottomless chips is a cool idea! Creme brulee for desert which was also excellent, oh andbybe olsylist included Nick Drake, Cat Stevens and Richard Hawley so extra points for that!

This was probably our 6th or 7th visit to Rockfish, and it was by far the best, from the warm welcome to the excellent service. The Chablis was very good, and the grilled sardines and mussels were absolutely delicious. The classic haddock and chips were cooked to perfection, as was the fritto misto. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. We also recommend Rockfish to all our guests staying at Hoe Park House, and we’ve received great feedback from them too. Looking forward to our next visit!

Visited here as over for the weekend visiting our son @ uni. Wanted to find somewhere colieac safe and Rockfish is colieac uk accredited so felt extremely safe in booking. The server was lovely , explained everything that was available and was very attentive without being over the top. The food was beautiful, the haddock was flakey and so fresh! I personally prefer my batter more crispy and I think a side should come with it - peas or curry that is extra! Great vibe , relaxing and would definitely pay other visit 🤗

This place is amazing!! From the food to the incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff to the super nice decor and handsoap and lotion in the loos, everything was just lovely. My husband said it was the best fish and chips he's ever had and he's had a lot of fish and chips! Everything was delicious. Can't wait to come back again and try more of the menu.

The food is very expensive for what you get ,the service is very poor,the floor needs a bloody good clean.I would not recommend this to anyone,and I won't be going back myself.

Great seafood restaurant near the National Marine Aquarium. Seafood platter was fresh and varied. Grilled Dover Sole was melt-in-the-mouth.

The best seafood restaurant I’ve been to in a long time - even ever. Menu based on catch of the day - the trawlers unloading right outside the window where you are sat eating that mornings catch - a great variety of fish that you don’t see in many restaurants and amazing wine :) not enough stars to rate how much this place is worth ….

Best battered fish I've ever had. Chips were ok and unlimited which was great.

Very good as always. One of our group is coeliac and it caters well for her. Our starter was disappointing we should have said at the time I know, we were asked, we didn't want to spoil the atmosphere (rather chewy tiny prawns tempura only 6! ) but everything else was great. Service really good and attentive

Lovely food, everyone enjoyed their meals (especially the refillable chips). One of our party was in a wheelchair and moved around the restaurant with ease.

Pleasant service. Struggled to get their credit card machine to work. Very quickly just gave us the coffee on the house while they went to fix it. Good service 👏

Sadly very disappointing. Both my wife who is vegetarian and myself who isnt, joked that we might have Covid due to the food being so tasteless. Not only was the food poor, it was over priced for what it was, an over priced want to be posh chip shop. The two star rating was only given due to the attentive and pleasant staff. The only restaurant we have been in Plymouth that we would not go to again.

Absolutely shocking. Shows as being open for takeaway on Google. Turn up, sign says order takeaway from restaurant. Restaurant staff have to get further advice from the chef who says takeaway is closed and you have to pay restaurant prices if you want food. Girl hands you a menu. What a joke!!! 3 times this has happened now. Shocking.

Always my favourite seafood spot in Plymouth, we had a lovely meal here with my parents and husband. Food was delicious, staff was great (shoutout to Becky!) despite a mishap having forgotten one of our meals. This was quickly resolved.

A family favourite, great local fish and a lovely atmosphere. Kid friendly venue, my daughter loves the prawns, anchovies and fish options - turns out she likes Ray wing too and anything else I've ordered for myself! They do a good value mid-week catch of the day menu which is worth exploring, as well as options to order bottomless chips with your meal. Overall highly recommended.

Very attractive and scenic restaurant, sadly largely empty for a Saturday night. Easy to miss for tourists, I guess. Perfectly cooked fish dishes and friendly, attentive service.

The food was absolutely delicious and the staff were so friendly and helpful. They could use a few more drinks options as two of our party found it very difficult to find something they wanted (maybe a few more spirits and mixers)

Food is 5 stars: first of all fish and chips are free for kids and second of all the food really is amazing and super fresh (and chip refills are free too! ) Service is 5 stars: waitresses are so kind here and the food came very quickly despite the fact there were a couple other people there. We also asked for a window seat and she gave us a really beautiful seat right next to the window in the corner ! Atmosphere is 5 stars: The views are so cool and we were watching the boats It’s very spacious and clean and well kept. The toilets are cool too and there is nappy changing station there. Only thing I’d improve is providing sanitary products like tampons or pads for females.

Fantastic food, freshly cooked to order

Highly recommend! The food was incredible and the service excellent! They took my son’s order first and it arrived super fast, which is brilliant as two year olds aren’t great at waiting! And due to a miscommunication on our part, we even left with free chips. Couldn’t have been better.

We had a lovely meal today. Nothing was too much trouble for our server (and forgive me I didn’t get her name) but she was friendly, chatty, knowledgeable about the menu & an absolute treasure! The whole meal is elevated when you get great customer service and she delivered in spades. We will definitely be back. Thank you.

Food much better than your restaurant in Exeter. First girl who seated us and gave us full information on daily specials was great. Next server was rubbish. Never asked if everything was OK, never asked if we wanted more drinks or dessert. We called her over to order more chips. She forgot all about them. When I mentioned this when I asked her for the bill she said 'Oh Yeah'. No apology, don't care attitude. Tried two different restaurants not, will not be visiting again and would not recommend.

Very nice food at Rockfish. Delicious Brill with homemade Tartar sauce! The pack they make for kids (£1) is very good and kept our little ones happy. Service could have been more attentive given how quiet it was.

A great restaurant, high priced but good quality food. Compared to other eateries in Devon/Cornwall the fish dishes are above averagely priced. However, fish and chips (hake) is a decent portion and service here is great. It is a scenic spot with views over the harbour/marina.

We really enjoyed our meal here! I am not a big seafood lover but my partner was desperate to go here so we went one evening and I’m so glad we did. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, the food was delicious and came out quickly and the restaurant is just lovely, really nice interior and the location isn’t half bad either.

This was recommended by the hotel we stayed at for an evening. The food was OK somewhat expensive for what you got The service was OK; the staff were not very interested in the customers considering they were not exactly that busy.

Had a lovely family time at Rockfish. It's light airy with fabulous views, we had a table with a view of the boats sailing by. We all chose differently and everyone's food looked and tasted delicious. Several families there, all having good time. Fab place.

Let's see the Frito misto for £23 very poor, 2 piece of each, I was starving after 1 hours, yes you have unlimited chips... But I don't come to a place like this to eat unlimited chips... Very poor, my friend asked Norwegian fish and chips.. £19 with the outside in very poor breadcrumbs... Much better fish and chips of Wetherspoon to be honest. The girls very nice, that is true. And beer... Local small can beer from Cornwall... £4.50 , not very cold and 330ml. Well. But the price with the quality and quantity of the food... It was not worthy.

We stopped in after visiting the aquarium and the staff were very accommodating finding a table for 8. We had the rock fillets and haddock and it was delicious. Our kids ate free and the unlimited chips were a great touch. Everything came out hot and fresh and the service was quick and the staff were super friendly. If you’re in Plymouth it’s absolutely worth a visit. Thank you for a great experience.

Came in today and luckily they had a table available for me and my son. We both had fish and chips which was delicious and the best I’ve had in a long time. I also ordered the mushy peas with curry sauce and wow this was amazing! The waiting staff were all lovely. Couldn’t fault anything. We’ll be back again soon to try something else on the menu!

Visited this evening with my husband and had a lovely experience! Wonderful service from Jen, who looked after us - very helpful and nothing too much trouble. The food was lovely, and they were very accommodating for gluten free. I highly recommend the plaice grilled in garlic butter if it’s available. The bottomless chips were a nice touch too, especially seeing as my husband has a never ending appetite!

Fantastic place to visit great food great view

Rockfish has become a family tradition- we come here least twice a year on our biannual visits to Devon. This time we had some car problems and Klaudia our server was totally fantastic at providing plenty for us to eat and drink and keep our son entertained whilst we waited for our car to be fixed. The food as always was fabulous- it is firm favourite and we will continue to come back- We just wanted to say a HUGE thanks to Klaudia you were brilliant and helped us out and made it possible for us to stay longer than the allocated time in a time of crisis. Would give 6 stars if we could

First visit here. Very impressed. Could not fault staff. Food was excellent. Sea Bream had perfect crispy skin, Greek salad just devine. Fritto Misto also highly recommended. Toilets clean. Will be back.
