Great resto right on the Barbican. Fab decor mermaid murals. Delicious food. Good value & friendly staff. A group of 5 ladies each choosing a different meal👌😉

What a treat! Not the cheapest but the food is lovely, the decor is great and service is good!

We ate there for Sunday lunch, and the service was exceptional. All the staff were very friendly and attentive . Starters were really nice, cajan prawns, and clam chowder the portion size is great. My only small complaint about the chowder was that it was lacking clams! Was more like a leek and potato soup ! Mains again were fantastic, tacos full of flavour, but breaded scallops!! My fish misto was great, all the fish cooked to perfection, but again, I would have preferred some crushed new potatoes and a watercress salad with the fish instead of chips and mushy peas The chips are not even handmade ! Which when you are serving such magnificent fish, detracts from the enjoyment. I would have given you 5 * but for these small things, it seems to me that on one hand, this restaurant is trying to be a very good fish restaurant, and on the other hand it's a very very nice fish and chip restaurant. I would definitely return again, and would strongly recommend a visit.

Really excellent fish and chips today. Have been there many, many times and I think today was the pinnacle. Freshly cooked - brilliant stuff. The view of the harbour is very pleasant even on a wet day like today, washed down with a pint of IPA in the Harbour’s Finest lunch special. There’s a reason I only eat fish and chips in view of the sea.

Update 04/09/2024: Downgraded from 5 to 4 stars. My wife and I visited the restaurant mid week having previously used the takeaway overlooking the quay. It was mid afternoon and the restaurant was very quiet, almost empty. We both chose the Harbour Finest large cod with chips, peas with tartar sauce at £19. The meal includes a small glass of house wine and a half pint of beer or cider. The service was excellent. The cod was delicious, clearly fresh and perfectly cooked but neither portion could be considered large. The fish was filleted quite thin so as to appear much larger than it was. I would class this as a standard portion of fish with a small portion of chips. The peas were a choice of mushy or garden and the tartar sauce was excellent. Incidentally, we called in Wetherspoons immediately afterwards and happened to sit next to someone who had ordered their large fish and chips which was priced at £12.95 and included a pint of beer/lager/cider. It was huge although I cannot comment on the quality. Previous Review of the Takeaway. 19/07/24. We do love our fish and chips and the haddock and chips served at this restaurant are close to the best we have had. I slipped up and ordered take away as we passed by without realising that this is a good sized restaurant with lots of inside seating and a much wider selection of food. But, if their haddock and chips are anything to go by, then I cannot rate them highly enough. Excellent and now our goto fish and chips place in Plymouth. Excellent service too. Thank you.

Food was delicious. The battered fish and chips were really well cooked . We came has a family of five celebrating a birthday ,however be warned the price on the menu is not correct for the restaurant add vat to the bill. It is misleading The restaurant by law has to display the correct price outside and I am hoping they do so for I did not look to see. Service was excellent and atmosphere was good. I would return . When next on the Barbican I will go to see if they display the correct price outside.

We had cod & chips and avocado salad, both were delicious and the size was huge. The location is great at the Barbican with good views of the marina, try to get a table next to the waterfront if you can. Loon out for the mermaid paintings on the ceilings which are pretty impressive. Staff were great and service was very fast. A shame the overall atmosphere of the place is industrial canteen style rather than sophisticated.

Great food and good value in a good location for exploring

Worse chips ive ever had the sausage was cooked way to long shrivelled up tasted of fish to waste of money.

First time visiting and not disappointed. The location is amazing with great views over the harbour. Brought back childhood memories as this used to be Plymouth fish market. We visited for lunch and it was vibrant but not too busy and there was no wait to be seated. Staff were excellent and very friendly. We had 3 in total during are meal and all were top notch 👍 Service was fast, the food excellent and really tasty and portions were good. The kitchen is visible from the table which was nice. Nice selection of drinks and cocktails too, the local cider was excellent. This was a great treat on our holiday and highly recommend 😁

Food was great, the service was OK but my wife watched a waiter spill some ice while filling a glass and he looked around to check if anyone had seen him, as though he was about to put the dropped ice back in the glass but thought better of it when he saw her looking. As for the atmosphere, it was pretty quiet when we attended on a Wednesday mid afternoon, too quiet in fact as there was no background music or radio and all we could hear were the staff conversations coming from behind the bar. Oh, and the decor is nice with great ceiling art (See Photos).

Asked for battered got non-battered. Waitress did NOT CARE. And chips were meh (soggy). I would recommend Rockfish instead.

Two adults, a teen and two children. The two kids had the child menu. We had fish and ships and a more expensive combo plate with fish shrimps, clam and calamari. The food was tasty and fresh. The shrimps in the extra plate were ridiculously small. I was not expecting the fish in the combo plate to be breaded. The place is lovely painted and a nice feeling.

Went tonight for my boyfriend’s birthday, starters arrived after about 10 minutes, good start! Then when finished Some girl just leant through my boyfriend and his dad and took away starter dish didn’t say anything was very abrupt and rude! At around 50 minutes after starters a guy finally came over and asked if we were ready for mains! It was not busy at all the staff were stood around on their phones so clearly we had been forgotten about! Food came after an hour and there wasn’t “do you need anything else” or “enjoy your food” which I think is the bare minimum in hospitality! I had to go up to the bar and ask for sauce, one girl I was following the whole way up when I got to the bar she just looked at me didn’t say anything! Our table was then half cleared by one waiter and that was it didn’t come back over no one asked if we wanted to see dessert menu! We had to wave someone over for our bill after waiting a while and realized no one was gonna come! Overall bad experience will not return customer service is awful!

Lovely place with and good selection of gluten-free food the chips and fish are amazing love the little detail of the Mushy peas that come on a cute scallop shell they know how to keep someone safe when they have Allergies to certain foods i highly recommend this place for safe gluten-free restaurant or take away food

Disappointing! The reviews on Trip Advisor led us to expect an exceptional fish-n-chip experience, but it was no more than average (our local chippie in Surrey is much better). Chips were not crispy! Also, I had to ask for a cold white wine – as first served it was warmer than room temperature. Loos were nice and clean, though.

Great food, great service and friendly staff. The interior looks like a fast food joint, especially chairs and tables. What I liked in particular is that you can get local, fresh fish, not every fish is available at a time, for example, you can get halibut, but only if some was caught that day. Tidy up your place, get some interior that doesn't look cheap, and your establishment deserves a Michelin star, laddies!

Never again. Average service, little salt and no vinegar despite asking for lots(takeaway) £12.50 for 9 pieces of calamari and chips. Clearly frozen and not good at all. The haddock was o.k but greasy. Thank heavens for Harbourside acoss the road. Won't bother with this place again.

It looks like a very modern and fancy looking when you go in, Looks can definitely be deceiving. The place was empty at lunch time which should have been a sign. The food was definitely nothing special and there were probably some better places on that road alone. Had the scallop burger which came with a stone cold bun and was more or less tasteless. Others had the fish and chips which was fine but definitely not better than other local spots. Not terrible but definitely not worth the price.

Really friendly, modern, no frills fish restaurant serving the local catch. There are favourites like battered fish and chips plus grilled fish, lobster, prawns, scallops. Fun desserts, such as Smeaton’s mess. It’s not fine dining but very nice nonetheless. There are huge floor to ceiling windows giving super views over the harbour. Good beers and wines. Nice choice for families.

I think it was better than average but certainly not ‘very good’ hence score. Selection good. Service good but food for me not stand out. Overall had pleasant meal but some small issues. Coke was like soda water so sent it back. Mint choc chip desert was made from vanilla not mint choc chip. Hot chocolate was not very chocolaty. Toilets could be checked more often. Paper all over floor and sink. Check sheet for the week completely blank. Shame. Prime spot so look after the details and customer satisfaction will be high. Fish was tasty and speed of service appropriate. Probably would not go back.

On entering you are taken to your table. Quick service and nice table overlooking the marina. Haddock and chips piping hot, good size portion and tasty.

We decided to drop in for a snack at lunchtime & saw the Fish & Chips at the takeaway entrance. Result, we ordered some, the quality was excellent, cooked to order so there was a bit of a wait. The chips were plentiful, crisp & the inside was perfectly cooked. The fish was a large tail cut, covered in a very tasty & crisp batter. The fish itself was perfectly cooked, big flakes that were succulent & a delight to eat. The atmosphere was outside, a bit draughty, overlooking the marina, a nice place to eat a nice meal.A couple of clips might be good for holding napkins down.

Staffs are very friendly and quick service. Chefs were using bare hands while touching food and beard not covered(quite dissatisfied). Toilets were blocked and dirty. Also Very less portion for the price, definitely need to consider the quantity. Overall good 👍. Very quick services by staffs.

Just had cod in batter, I just had to say, that it was the best fish, I've ever had.

No staff on take away side. Quick to take money but extremely slow on delivery to counter. Pointed out that my order was going cold to the surly young man who came through to take more orders, whereupon he threw my order together and ignored request for salt and vinegar. Food was cold and greasy. All in all a poor experience with at best Mediocre take away food at restaurant food at restaurant prices.

Had the battered cod with chips and peas while my daughter had chicken coupons, chips and peas from the kids menu. She finished it off with a mint choc sundae, which she enjoyed. The cod was so nice, tasted really fresj and melted in the mouth. Nice clean restaurant with lovely interesting decor.

Absolutely awful ..the ladies serving at the entrance were very pleasant BUT unfortunately afterwards it went from bad to worse mainly due to the fact that the lady doing the cooking either didn't know what gluten free was or was choosing not to cook it!! She was asked on three occasions if she had put the gf fish n chips on and she kept saying yes yes then not doing it. Now the fact that it was overpriced to begin with was something I accepted but then after over an hour waiting only for it not to turn up was really quite unacceptable. Wont be going back and it's a shame because a few years ago I went and it was great good service and nice food.

Lovely food, friendly helpful staff

Our lunch was outstanding. We had john dory and halibut local specials for lunch. They were extremely fresh, expertly cooked and delicious to eat. The John dory was melt in the mouth buttery and delicate with a crisp skin. The halibut was some of the nicest we have ever eaten. Even though the price was a little on the high side we still felt that we got good value for money and would go back again.

Got a pasta just as I saw someones review on here that they had a delicious pasta. My one was terrible, 15 pounds for store bought pasta and tomato sauce. The pasta was so overcooked and disgusting, I couldn't eat it which was very disappointing. Staff just felt very off and and we didn't feel very welcome. Overpriced for what we got, wont be coming back again. Very disappointed.

Takeaway: been using for 3 years. Always good until tonight. Chips good but cod and haddock both over cooked so batter too brown and fish dry. Shame as usually 5 stars.

Lovely place with a lovely view of the harbour. Really friendly staff who were quick to see to us. They were also chatty to us about why we were in the area and even gave some recommendations of where to go. The food was very fresh, great quality and very tasty.

I visited this resturant when I was last in Plymouth in 2021, it was so good I returned 3 years later. It still has a great seafood menu and serves nicely cooked fish. All this and amazing views of the boats on Sutton Harbour.

Really disappointed came here with my son and food was really greasy and over £85 for the two of us. I always wanted to try it but will not be coming back.

I recently came here with my Fiancé for our anniversary and had a lovely meal! The atmosphere is gorgeous and it was lovely and warm, and we had come in from the rain so really appreciated it. The view of the port was amazing as well. The staff were very quick and attentive to our needs. We had some starters (halloumi fries and white bait) and they were incredible. Delicious and generous portion sizes.b For mains, we had the fish tacos and Holy moly, they were incredible. Not too spicy, flavoursome and a perfect portion. The only issue we had was that we were sat by a door so when people did come in it was a rush of cold air. Luckily it only happened once or twice, but wasn't enough to knock a star off.

We have been wanting to visit this place for a while Arriving at the start of service we were placed in a window seat Decided on 1 starter and 2 mains - seafood cocktail and 2 seafood platters Drinks arrived - my coffee was tepid The starter arrived and it looked a promising start, it went downhill from then onwards Hubby was still eating the starter as the waitress tried to clear it it away - oh well we thought Seafood platter next - but what arrived was an battered oily disaster Everything on the platter was battered and dripping in oil including the plate, the accompanying sauces, one has so much garlic in it that was all you could taste during the meal The waiting staff asked if it was ok and we just went yeah ( we had only just had the food served) The meal was so bad that neither of us could finish it, the calamari was like chewing on string, the crab fish cakes ( if you can call them that were overcooked) the prawns due to the amount of battered was just like eating oil, the whole meal was just swimming in oil as the plate was covered The waitress did ask if we wanted the left over food in a takeaway container but to be honest we couldn’t face it Added to the fact by this time the restaurant was like an oven , it was so hot we couldn’t breathe and there was no air circulation This meal cost £73 which is steep for two, especially as we have just come back from abroad and we were eating far better food for 4 adults for less money The disappointment in this meal means we will NOT return or recommend

Visited on a wet and wild Sunday night, so it was fairly quiet in the restaurant, we had intended for a takeaway and a walk, but weather had other ideas. Really clean, good choice on the menu, both went for haddock and chips, portion sizes just right washed down with a beer and wine. Staff really friendly and polite. Looking forward to our next trip to Plymouth so we can visit again

Absolutely amazing lunch cod and chips best we’ve had! Very attentive service waitress was really lovely and helpful, we will definitely be back when we visit Plymouth again. Just amazing.

Lovely place to stop for a coffee

We have avoided for a year after tremendously poor service however after trying again it’s much worse. Food is good, front of house staff could not be more disinterested if they tried. Texting on their phones and having a laugh together instead of waiting tables. It’s so sad that the service here has nosedived even further. Absolutely wouldn’t recommend. Avoid.

Booked in this evening for my brothers 30th was extremely quiet, service was mediocre considering how quiet it was, starters were good , and in all fairness the rest of the party enjoyed there mains but the crab and clam chowder was somewhat a glorified veg soup with about 3 clams and the odd sprinkle of brown crab meat. Bearly ate it and told the waitress about it only to be told it was the most popular dish on the menu well wim sure it is for someone that loves a veggie soup. There was no apology no removal of it off the bill. What a joke. Wouldn’t recommend and I certainly wouldn’t recommend the “seafood chowder”

Really impressive service, delicious food and reasonably priced considering the prime location. Reserve a table by the window fit a lovely view over the harbour.

We accidentally came in through the back door, which faces the harbour, but nobody seemed to mind. The menu was a mix of traditional British fish and chips, and more modern alternatives like tacos and monkfish curry. All the mains come with unlimited chips (you can request more at any point) but the amount that we were served was just right. The batter was crispy on the fish, the tartar sauce was tangy, and our daughter said the kids portion was the best fish and chips she'd had. There were vegetarian and vegan options available if you are eating with people who don't eat animal products, but this is definitely a restaurant that specialises in fish. It isn't the cheapest place to eat in Plymouth, but you have got a seat right on the harbour, and service was friendly and quick.

The fish is fresh and delicious. However I asked the waiter three times for another order of fries and they were not given to me until I left.

Amazing light batter and tasty fish

Although this is an expensive restaurant the food is good. When we arrived there was only one couple at a table & the waitress asked if we had booked (I thought that was funny!) I said I'm sure you can fit us in but we have booked. Not 20 minutes later we were the only people in the restaurant. I had the Hake fillet grilled & it was perfectly cooked & so meaty. My husband had the mussels in a nice rich sauce. Our son had the seafood tortilla which he enjoyed. I would go back as the food was very good but I'd probably wait for a birthday or anniversary at their prices.

Lovely experience! Was served by a lovely waitress called Cara who made our experience 10/10. Very friendly service and food was very promptly brought out. After Cara’s service and the lovely food I could not recommend enough!

Went on a Thursday lunchtime for a birthday meal with family. As I have a small appetite, I just went for a starter & side from the extensive menu (calamari & chips). Both turned out to be generous portions & were equally as big as a main course. My mother had a very large bowl of very spicy monkfish curry, and my cousins had the local hake, which was tasty but on the small side. All very nice, but curry aside, everything was a bit on the cold side for some reason. Except for the enormous onion rings we shared, which were piping hot. Whereas I'm sure something would have been done had we asked (the staff were super friendly & helpful), we didn't actually discuss it until a week later & all thought it was just our own portion. I think that may be because the fish was served on cold slate, rather than proper crockery, which can be pre-heated, & holds heat. Such is the way with too many restaurants. Never mind. Anyway, lovely view if you get a window seat, good clean facilities (including a large disabled toilet). Cost-wise, I would say this was pretty good value considering how expensive fish is. It's just a shame that the choice of serving plates meant that the food wasn't as good as it could have been.

Amazing food. Seafood really fresh and delicious. Kids menu large enough and the food was fresh/lovely. Service was slow. Staff were friendly but at times it felt they were more worried about catching up on their phones or as a group by their bar than to take orders etc.

Really disappointed in portion size asked for small but I should just have the extra because it was mini size. The staff were excellent the food was edible not worth the effort plent other place in the area. Won’t be back !!!!

Staff were really lovely and the artwork on the walls are really impressive definitely worth a visit the only comment is the seafood platter everything on it is battered and fairly greasy.

The Misto, while perhaps a bit pricey, did provide a great trio of fresh fish and perfectly cooked. Add to this a great location.

the crispy calamari are one of the best in town..not always but this week definitely were. my little one loves the place..not only for the painted ceilings but for the calamari and the tartar sauce:) not the cheapest but is definitely worth it as a treat. tried the grilled code last week, amaazing!

All the chips shops on the barbican were shut, it was a Tuesday at 5pm and it was so quiet. So we went for our chips here at their takeaway and the chips were tasteless, no flavour, very very boring. After eating 10 chips we were so bored we threw them away. Even macdonalds does better chips and that says it all!

Brilliant food. You really get the quality and size that you pay for. They offer vegan fish and chips which is fabulous too. Lovely place along the habourside/water front with fantastic art on the walls.

I went here for a quick lunch. It's very expensive here for the standard of cooking. The fish was very greasy, a bit like it had not had time to just let it stand to allow any oils to drain off it. My granddaughter had a kind of chicken shape, but it had been cooked for too long as it was very dark and hard. Staff were very helpful and polite and the restaurant was lovely but to pay their sort of prices food needs to be cooked better.

Walked past and couldn't resist the smell. Got unbattered sausage and chips from the friendliest chef and server I've met in a long time. Thanks for sorting out lunch before a long drive guys ❤️
