I have been to this restaruant several times and really enjoyed the food but we visited for lunch on Sunday 15th September and had a very disappointing experience. The menu was the same as previous but the amount of food which arrived was significantly smaller and frankly a rip off. We paid £9 for the whitebait and there was no more than 10 pieces of whitebait. I fully appreciate the cost involved with seafood and happy to pay for good quality fish but this not the case. The special starter of the red mullet was overcooked and the other starter of mackerell pate was 3 tiny pieces of toast with a spoonful of pate on each.. also for £9! Such a shame as previously the food was much better and when we made our complaint to staff the response was that "the menu had changed" so sadly we won't be visiting this restaurant again.

I love me some seafood and have been meaning to try The Hook and Line for a while now. Boyfriend and I decided to eat here after watching a film at Everyman cinema. It was busy-ish, but we were seated quickly. Staff were friendly and attentive. The menu has a good selection; I chose the fried fish tacos and he had the chowder. Both dishes arrived promptly. I’ll admit I was a little apprehensive about mine as I did ask if I could have it without any coriander (I really HATE the stuff) but chef said the mix was pre-made so I took a gamble…I’m so glad I did! The tacos were lovely and quite a generous portion. The only thing I will say is that the salad/cabbage that was served with it was a little brown around the edges and perhaps past its best. Boyfriend really enjoyed his chowder and it came with a nice chunk of sourdough bread. We were both stuffed on leaving. Atmosphere is nice and relaxed with a very rustic decor. I will definitely return 😊

A terrible experience for me today! September 10th, 2024! I will never visit this restaurant again! The waitress didn't know what an aperitif was, and that in this upscale restaurant! I sat on a chair that was smeared with chewing gum and completely messed up my pants! No apology, no concessions on the bill! I can now try to get my pants clean again! No recommendation, avoid this restaurant! CHEEKINESS!

This is a great and very dog friendly place to eat. We both had the Seafood Linguine special - it was huge! With a couple of glasses of an unusual but delicious wine. And i couldnt enjoy it and you expect it to be perfect for the amount of money you pay, i mean standards seem to drop alot lately, and their shouldnt be no excuse for it..and may i add it wasent just my meal that was disapointing that was 3 others Also it was very hot inside! Arrived at 1240 on a weekend, only 2 other people in the entire restaurant. Starters were nice; whitebait and pate although pricey at £9 each. Now onto the fish and chips at £19.50. The chips were bland and were clearly frozen like kebab shop takeaway chips. £3.50 extra for a portion of watery tinned mushy peas; so watery in fact that I asked for a spoon and eat them like soup. The fish although nice was quite small. For £25 at a chippy you’d get an absolute whale and tasty chips which would feed two easy. Two glasses of wine for £18!? Absolutely crazy. Nice enough location, rent must be sky high causing lack of custom. Finger in the photo for reference. Cheek at the end to add a service charge without asking first.

Ok service on arrival . Restaurant and Menu looked great online but the platter ,at £55 , and the white bait starter were very small. Tasted great but 6 whitebait followed by platter of 2 sardines, 2 scallops, 2 oysters, reasonable amount of muscles in lovely white wine sauce. All fine but not value for money at all. This should be a platter for 2 priced £55 but was barely enough for one. Aioli and bread took up most of platter. We left hungry. Manager arrived and spoke only to those he clearly knew but ignored other tables. Lovely place, except poor toilets and cleaning issues beside kitchen but it hasn’t got value for money and service right. It could be so much better and needs to be. Disappointed and won’t return or advise others to go

The food was nice, its pricey so you expect top notch. The fish and chips was too crispy (crunchy) and way too much batter for the amount of fish. The chowder was nice but had to be sent back to warm up, nice curry too but at £24 I thought it would have more fish in it...the service was ok.

I visited and ordered two takeaway fish and chips this week 21/05/24 as a birthday treat. The front of house staff were friendly but that’s all the positive bits. The price for the two meals was around £24 so was expecting the food to be enjoyable, however after a quick walk to the main grass area to sit we both open our boxes with disappointment as first not even a wooden fork or napkin, but fingers were fine as we were hungry and not that fussy. Unfortunately the chips were hard and dry, no seasoning had been used and so was kinda glad the portion was small. The fish and was very shocking, the batter was crumbly and failed To cover the whole fish, the size was terrible, thin and small, looked like small whitting fillets rather then cod or haddock which we were expecting, Again no seasoning anywhere, such a shame as something so simple was done so poorly. it’s located in a nice area and near the sea, but there’s other food options which will Probably give you better value for money and not leave you feeling mugged off.

We were a table of three, arrived early for lunch on Monday, their quietest day of the week. Service was attentive and friendly. We chose a table outside as it was sunny and, for a change the Yard was not windy. A great location. There were quite a few cigarette butts and other small debris on the terrace floor. Shame this hadn't been cleaned to start the new working week. The grilled sardines were good. The slaw was fresh and tasty. However the scallops were cooked with too much bread crumbs, which after cooking arrived in one dried mass. Unforgivable as there hardly any diners. The sourdough bread was slightly sweet and soft, quite unlike the sourdough I buy from local bakeries. Very unsatisfying.

My friend and I were holidaying in Plymouth and wanted to have some fresh seafood for lunch. I found Hook and Line on Tripadvisor and we set off to find it. Everything in the Royal William Yard is very discreet but with determination we found it and my word the hunt was worth it! We were welcomed by a charming young man who showed us to the most comfortable corner of the restaurant. Now to the food - I had the mackerel pate and my friend had the halibut for starters both were absolutely delicious, as were the wines which we chose for our meal, then we moved on to our main which was the catch of the day, freshly caught lemon sole to share, we had herb roasted potatoes and buttered greens to accompany. We ended with a cheese board and a glass of port each. It was an absolutely perfect meal and I would recommend the Hook and Line unreservedly. Well done for perfect service and cooking.

A disappointing experience. Food was good, but not exceptional. Waited about 15-20 mins for starters which was bearable. Then had a to wait an hour til the mains arrived. This was after (at about 35 mins) one of the staff said they had had to ‘clean down due to a coeliac’. After a further 15 mins, we approached the team and were told it was ‘on its way’. We were given a round of drinks by way of apology. As I said, the food was ok but (given we were seated at 1800, had only two courses and didn’t leave til 2015), we were very disappointed about the efficiency of service. In terms of the food; scallops and mussels were not the best. Starters are small but mains a better size.

Everything about this restaurant is good starting from the staff who are simply amazing and were so patient and understanding with our two nervous rescue dogs, they were also very attentive and genuinely nice. We wanted to have a meal for two without a reservation. A dirty chef greeted us at the entrance of the restaurant. Then the waiter came and said we could sit wherever we wanted, the restaurant was empty anyway. First we ordered our drinks, we wanted them to be non-alcoholic, and one of our drinks came with alcohol. We chose moktail but unfortunately it was a failure. We ate mussels and fish and chips. The plate I ate was horribly bad, the seafood was weak and stale, none of the products had any taste. It was freshly thawed and served. The fish and chips plate looked better. When the order was placed, it was prepared from scratch and served 25 minutes late. It is very sad that there is such a disappointing restaurant with such a beautiful concept. My wife went to the cash register to pay the bill, and we were shocked that the bill was extremely high, as if it wasn't enough that a lot of products arrived in bad shape. A 10% service fee was also requested. I didn't feel like paying this fee when no service was provided properly. I will never come again and never recommend it to anyone. And I'm sure this restaurant is run by people who don't know how to cook.

As a seafood enthusiast, I love this place. Their selection of fresh seafood is simply amazing. The atmosphere in the restaurant is just as delightful as the food. It has a laid-back, inviting vibe that makes you feel at ease the moment you walk in. The staff, especially the owner, Steve, contribute significantly to this welcoming atmosphere. Their friendliness and efficiency in service make the dining experience even more enjoyable. One of the highlights of my visit was the quality of the seafood. It's evident that they prioritize fresh, local produce, which is apparent in every bite. Whether it's the fish tacos, chowder, or the fish & chips, each dish is wonderful. While some may find the prices a bit high, I believe the quality of the food and the overall experience justify the cost. It's a great place for a special occasion or just a casual evening out if you're a fan of seafood.

Great "laid back" feeling about the place. The staff were very friendly & efficient. The food was excellent, but like many restaurants, was overpriced. Would I go back again? probably not.

Popped in for takeaway, ordered tacos and had a rum while we waited. Lovely atmosphere, great rum selection and the tacos were absolutely delicious when we finally ate them at home. We'll definitely be back 🙂

We visited today for our anniversary and the food was amazing. But what made our visit even better was the customer service. Chris our server was amazing and he made us feel at home. He also had a lot of knowledge about the building and the Yard as a whole. I love restaurants where the staff are allowed to have conversations

We happened across the Hook & Line whilst on our way to catch the ferry to the Barbican, and after a quick look at the menu decided to book a table for our return. It’s owner Steve is a lovely chap and it turns out he owns and runs the ferry and a small fleet fishing boats, so his fish is always fresh. The old building is an impressive space and staff were attentive and friendly. The service was excellent. We had a prawns to start which were delicious, and then West Country Mussels and chips. Very generous portions and the plump mussels were fresh and perfectly cooked in a coriander, lime and chilli sauce which was amazing. Deserts were also well worth having, as were the Rum cocktails which the bar staff guided us through. Overall there is great welcoming atmosphere created by Steve and his staff. Our food was very tasty and we couldn’t help notice some great looking dishes being delivered to neighbouring tables, so we will definitely be back next time we visit Plymouth.

I would have expected more from £45 platter even with ordering from extras, my husband and I were not fulfilled. I ordered a desert at 14.10 and to be told at 14.30 it would be a couple minutes, with having school run, at 14.35 we had to refuse desert to be told then it would be 2 mins … they offered coffees on the house but nearly 30 mins for a pudding … we entered the restaurant at 1pm and left at 14.45pm for one course. Not really value for money I would say.

A fantastic place for a drink by the water. The barman offered to let me try a sample of the rosé before I ordered as I wasn't sure which to choose. Excellent service and a world class view to watch the sunset!

This place is just fabulous. I googled for gluten free fish and chips but it was so much more than that. The monkfish bites were divine, crispiest tastiest batter and meaty fresh fish. Husband had the whitebail and son had the fish cakes. Absolutely loved...

Fantastic food and lovely welcome by Dan & Chris. My 10yo wanted to try cockles and they let him try first before he ordered. Whitebait was awesome and calamari was superb. Must visit, highly recommended if you are in Plymouth.

Packed. Good atmosphere, food ok, but could be better. I had the mussels and so did my partner. quantities were not the same. Several of my mussel shells were empty, not just one or two. Sauce ok, but insufficient and not garlicky enough. Eton mess...

Went up for fish and chips with curry sauce as a Sunday evening treat. The size of the portion was massive and it had nice chunky chips and the best curry in plympton. Staff were friendly and polite

Sadly very disappointing. Both my wife who is vegetarian and myself who isnt, joked that we might have Covid due to the food being so tasteless. Not only was the food poor, it was over priced for what it was, an over priced want to be posh chip shop. The two star rating was only given due to the attentive and pleasant staff. The only restaurant we have been in Plymouth that we would not go to again.

We were recommended this little restaurant and made our way there on a quiet Monday lunch without pre-booking. The restaurant was quiet and the waitress was very welcoming. The service was impeccable and with a smile. We had the scallops, mussels, Dover sole, lobster, prawns risotto and calamari: all fresh & perfectly cooked. The meal was washed down with a bottle of Bollinger which complemented the delicious seafood.
