Absolutely perfect, we attended for our one year anniversary which is paper and they provided a lovely selection of oragami figures as well as an oragami game leading to a couple of free drinks which was both unexpected and delightful. Seafood platter was fantastic and the rum was spectacular along with the customer service and the complimentary dessert. My Niece chose this restaurant for her Birthday and this was our third visit so knew the good food and service previously recieved. Very disappointed on this ocassion there was no mention when booking or on their website that the fish menu had been greatly reduced because they are serving Sunday Roast this was the first disappointment to us we wished we had known as we chose the place for its seafood. We were a party of eight and ordered our food. Starters came in a reasonable time and everyone was happy. Wish I had timed it the but main courses took a very long time to arrive bearing in mind that at the time there was only six other diners in the restaurant. My wife commented that there was a lot of food being served but in boxes so it would appear they were concentrating on deliveries. I went for the Monk fish scampi and I wish I had taken a photo the chips werent great and the scampi was scattered all over the chips presentation was terrible my local fish and chip shop serves better chips and it would have looked just as good out of paper. Two of our party did choose the Sunday roast and again disappointing. The chicken appeared to be a piece of cooked chicken breast and not from a roasted chicken both commented the chicken was rubbery !. They had the smallest pot of cauliflower cheese to share only managing to get one small piece of cauliflower each and the carrot was served on the plate the biggest carrot I had ever seen just cut down the middle. They both felt they could have visited one of the many local carveries and had a far better meal for less money. Such a shame as previuos visit had been great but wont be going again.

We very much enjoyed lunch here on a quiet Tuesday (hence only 4 stars for atmosphere but only because it was so quiet). The quality of the food & the presentation were superb. We had scallops & the seafood salad to start with - 5 perfectly cooked scallops & a really fresh seafood salad. For mains we had the grilled prawn & grilled fish tacos & shared. Again, beautifully cooked & just as seafood tacos should be. But the best bit of all was the welcome & the service. When we arrived we received a superb greeting & then our front of house, Kate, was simply first class. Friendly, professional, caring. Gave menu advice, gave us time to think when my wife was undecided as all the menu was so tempting. And all this despite the fact that the restaurant was having a technical challenge with the till but they made sure it didn’t impact us at all. All round a superb lunchtime - wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Hook & Line

I have been to this restaruant several times and really enjoyed the food but we visited for lunch on Sunday 15th September and had a very disappointing experience. The menu was the same as previous but the amount of food which arrived was significantly smaller and frankly a rip off. We paid £9 for the whitebait and there was no more than 10 pieces of whitebait. I fully appreciate the cost involved with seafood and happy to pay for good quality fish but this not the case. The special starter of the red mullet was overcooked and the other starter of mackerell pate was 3 tiny pieces of toast with a spoonful of pate on each.. also for £9! Such a shame as previously the food was much better and when we made our complaint to staff the response was that "the menu had changed" so sadly we won't be visiting this restaurant again.

I love me some seafood and have been meaning to try The Hook and Line for a while now. Boyfriend and I decided to eat here after watching a film at Everyman cinema. It was busy-ish, but we were seated quickly. Staff were friendly and attentive. The menu has a good selection; I chose the fried fish tacos and he had the chowder. Both dishes arrived promptly. I’ll admit I was a little apprehensive about mine as I did ask if I could have it without any coriander (I really HATE the stuff) but chef said the mix was pre-made so I took a gamble…I’m so glad I did! The tacos were lovely and quite a generous portion. The only thing I will say is that the salad/cabbage that was served with it was a little brown around the edges and perhaps past its best. Boyfriend really enjoyed his chowder and it came with a nice chunk of sourdough bread. We were both stuffed on leaving. Atmosphere is nice and relaxed with a very rustic decor. I will definitely return 😊

Arrived at 1240 on a weekend, only 2 other people in the entire restaurant. Starters were nice; whitebait and pate although pricey at £9 each. Now onto the fish and chips at £19.50. The chips were bland and were clearly frozen like kebab shop takeaway chips. £3.50 extra for a portion of watery tinned mushy peas; so watery in fact that I asked for a spoon and eat them like soup. The fish although nice was quite small. For £25 at a chippy you’d get an absolute whale and tasty chips which would feed two easy. Two glasses of wine for £18!? Absolutely crazy. Nice enough location, rent must be sky high causing lack of custom. Finger in the photo for reference. Cheek at the end to add a service charge without asking first.

Ok service on arrival . Restaurant and Menu looked great online but the platter ,at £55 , and the white bait starter were very small. Tasted great but 6 whitebait followed by platter of 2 sardines, 2 scallops, 2 oysters, reasonable amount of muscles in lovely white wine sauce. All fine but not value for money at all. This should be a platter for 2 priced £55 but was barely enough for one. Aioli and bread took up most of platter. We left hungry. Manager arrived and spoke only to those he clearly knew but ignored other tables. Lovely place, except poor toilets and cleaning issues beside kitchen but it hasn’t got value for money and service right. It could be so much better and needs to be. I visited and ordered two takeaway fish and chips this week 21/05/24 as a birthday treat. The front of house staff were friendly but that’s all the positive bits. The price for the two meals was around £24 so was expecting the food to be enjoyable, however after a quick walk to the main grass area to sit we both open our boxes with disappointment as first not even a wooden fork or napkin, but fingers were fine as we were hungry and not that fussy. Unfortunately the chips were hard and dry, no seasoning had been used and so was kinda glad the portion was small. The fish and was very shocking, the batter was crumbly and failed To cover the whole fish, the size was terrible, thin and small, looked like small whitting fillets rather then cod or haddock which we were expecting, Again no seasoning anywhere, such a shame as something so simple was done so poorly. it’s located in a nice area and near the sea, but there’s other food options which will Probably give you better value for money and not leave you feeling mugged off.

We chose a table outside as it was sunny and, for a change the Yard was not windy. A great location. There were quite a few cigarette butts and other small debris on the terrace floor. Shame this hadn't been cleaned to start the new working week. The grilled sardines were good. The slaw was fresh and tasty. However the scallops were cooked with too much bread crumbs, which after cooking arrived in one dried mass. Unforgivable as there hardly any diners. The sourdough bread was slightly sweet and soft, quite unlike the sourdough I buy from local bakeries. Very unsatisfying.

Everything in the Royal William Yard is very discreet but with determination we found it and my word the hunt was worth it! We were welcomed by a charming young man who showed us to the most comfortable corner of the restaurant. Now to the food - I had the mackerel pate and my friend had the halibut for starters both were absolutely delicious, as were the wines which we chose for our meal, then we moved on to our main which was the catch of the day, freshly caught lemon sole to share, we had herb roasted potatoes and buttered greens to accompany. We ended with a cheese board and a glass of port each. It was an absolutely perfect meal and I would recommend the Hook and Line unreservedly. Well done for perfect service and cooking.

This was after (at about 35 mins) one of the staff said they had had to ‘clean down due to a coeliac’. After a further 15 mins, we approached the team and were told it was ‘on its way’. We were given a round of drinks by way of apology. As I said, the food was ok but (given we were seated at 1800, had only two courses and didn’t leave til 2015), we were very disappointed about the efficiency of service. We wanted to have a meal for two without a reservation. A dirty chef greeted us at the entrance of the restaurant. Then the waiter came and said we could sit wherever we wanted, the restaurant was empty anyway. First we ordered our drinks, we wanted them to be non-alcoholic, and one of our drinks came with alcohol. We chose moktail but unfortunately it was a failure. We ate mussels and fish and chips. The plate I ate was horribly bad, the seafood was weak and stale, none of the products had any taste. It was freshly thawed and served. The fish and chips plate looked better. When the order was placed, it was prepared from scratch and served 25 minutes late. It is very sad that there is such a disappointing restaurant with such a beautiful concept. My wife went to the cash register to pay the bill, and we were shocked that the bill was extremely high, as if it wasn't enough that a lot of products arrived in bad shape. A 10% service fee was also requested. I didn't feel like paying this fee when no service was provided properly. I will never come again and never recommend it to anyone. And I'm sure this restaurant is run by people who don't know how to cook.

My friend and I visited for dinner recently, never been here before but the menu looked good, we didn’t realise it was more chippy vibes than restaurant however that’s ok. Service was amazing from the start, the guy expected us and seated us where we wanted, there was no one else in there while we were there which usually would make you feel awkward but it actually didn’t because it was quite a nice chilled vibe. We didn’t really know what to order so got some recommended from the server who was brilliant, really enthusiastic and helpful. The food was lovely, we would definitely eat here again. Overall would recommend, great food, lovely vibe and amazing customer service. Reasonably priced too.

We had dinner at The Hook and Line on a Friday evening following a long drive down to Plymouth, to visit my son and celebrate my son birthday. The staff (the manager particularly) could not have been more friendly, nothing was too much. Importantly, the food matched the service... the Thai inspired muscles I ordered were without a doubt the best I've ever tasted anywhere... and trust me, I've sampled a few. As this was an impromptu visit we had not organised anything Birthday wise, but the kitchen team put together a lovely little 'happy birthday' plate. So pleased we happened upon this restaurant, we will .ost definitely be going back at some time in the future. 😀

Visiting my son in Plymouth this weekend for his birthday we paid an impromptu visit to the Hook and Line. The staff (the manager particularly) could not have been friendlier, and nothing was too much. The food was delicious, the Thai inspired muscles especially so... I've sampled a fair few in my time, bit these were by far the best ever!! As it was an impromptu trip we hadn't organised anything on the Birthday front, but the kitchen very kindly (without our asking) put together a little happy birthday plate. We Will definitely be returning on future trios to Plymouth.

Very quiet, but we went on a Friday lunchtime, it's a nice building, nice and warm for how high the ceilings were. Staff were very pleasant and attentive. I loved my fish and chips but my partner didn't like her mussels at all, I think that was personal choice however. I would definitely go again.

As a seafood enthusiast, I love this place. Their selection of fresh seafood is simply amazing. The atmosphere in the restaurant is just as delightful as the food. It has a laid-back, inviting vibe that makes you feel at ease the moment you walk in. The staff, especially the owner, Steve, contribute significantly to this welcoming atmosphere. Their friendliness and efficiency in service make the dining experience even more enjoyable. One of the highlights of my visit was the quality of the seafood. It's evident that they prioritize fresh, local produce, which is apparent in every bite. Whether it's the fish tacos, chowder, or the fish & chips, each dish is wonderful. While some may find the prices a bit high, I believe the quality of the food and the overall experience justify the cost. It's a great place for a special occasion or just a casual evening out if you're a fan of seafood.

Love this place, always made to feel welcome. Food is great, very accommodating if you’re trying to be healthy. The scollops are fabulous I had them to start then grilled fish without the batter and chips, totally yummy. Oh and a shout out to the rum cocktails I’m not a rum drinker but loved the rum and ginger 💕

Delicious food and excellent service! We came for a birthday celebration on the 10th of December after originally booking at The Boathouse. The Boathouse closed early so we were accommodated at the sister business, The Hook & Line. We were actually really glad that we ended up here instead as we didn’t realise it was even here! We loved the atmosphere and our 9 month old baby was even loving the food! We will certainly be back again in the new year! :)

We visited today for our anniversary and the food was amazing. But what made our visit even better was the customer service. Chris our server was amazing and he made us feel at home. He also had a lot of knowledge about the building and the Yard as a whole. I love restaurants where the staff are allowed to have conversations

We happened across the Hook & Line whilst on our way to catch the ferry to the Barbican, and after a quick look at the menu decided to book a table for our return. It’s owner Steve is a lovely chap and it turns out he owns and runs the ferry and a small fleet fishing boats, so his fish is always fresh. The old building is an impressive space and staff were attentive and friendly. The service was excellent. We had a prawns to start which were delicious, and then West Country Mussels and chips. Very generous portions and the plump mussels were fresh and perfectly cooked in a coriander, lime and chilli sauce which was amazing. Deserts were also well worth having, as were the Rum cocktails which the bar staff guided us through. Overall there is great welcoming atmosphere created by Steve and his staff. Our food was very tasty and we couldn’t help notice some great looking dishes being delivered to neighbouring tables, so we will definitely be back next time we visit Plymouth.

I came here to get takeaway fish and chips. Three minutes down the road they fell through the paper bag they gave me. I went back and soon as I mentioned what happened, I started getting a load of attidude from the guy who served me. Apparently it was my fault for asking for salt and vinegar, for asking for a bag, basically it was everyone elses fault but his. He said its illegal use plastic bags. But I now get my dinner elsewhere, where funnily enough, they use plastic bags. All I wanted was fish and chips after a days work, and instead had some guy giving me an earful like it was his dinner strewn all over the floor. I left without the fish and chips as his attitude stunk.

We didnt book a table for a Saturday evening but only waited a short time to be seated. Food was great, along with the relaxed atmosphere. Genuine Thai food. I also have to mention that after dinner we decided to have a couple of cocktails and the expresso martinis had to best up with the best I've had. I think it was the owner/manager who made them. He was brilliant. Will be returning and highly recommend.
