Absolutely amazing! One of the best meals I have had. Everything was just perfect. We were served a complimentary amuse bouche of artichoke and truffle cream with bread. It was delicious and a lovely surprise. I had the scallops to start and my partner had the duck breast. Both starters were plentiful and beautifully put together. For main we had the lamb and the mullet. I'd never had mullet before and I cannot wait to have it again! The potato terrine it was served with was perfect and the quantity was very generous. Service was extremely friendly and efficient and as a gluten free diner, my needs were catered for perfectly. All in all, our visit was perfect and we wouldn't hesitate to visit again when we are in the area.

Absolutely perfect portion sizes to allow a 3 course meal to be savoured without entering a food-induced coma afterwards. I will be banging on about that sticky toffee pudding for the rest of my life. Turns out it’s been on the menu for 30 years; I can see why! Lovely staff. Will return and recommend.

Stayed two nights in the Rock Inn for my 40th birthday and on the second day booked a roast for 10 in the restaurant with my family . Both my partner and I are vegan and my wider family eat meat. All the staff made sure they provided excellent vegan options and bought in dairy free milk and spread in the mornings for our breakfast. My family said the meat roasts were exceptionally good too. The pub is so cosy and well maintained. The staff are very kind, well informed and attentive of your needs. I loved the building and the feel of the place - so close to many amazing sights/days out on Dartmoor too. I couldn't recommend the Rock Inn highly enough, be it for a stay, a meal, a drink or all three. Bonus respect to them for being a freehouse - support local businesses! Thank you for making my birthday a really special occasion that I will always look back on fondly.

I had a brief break away in Dartmoor and rather than my usual wild camping I opted for the comforts of The Rock Inn. Its a very short walk from the Haytor visitor centre and has lovely rooms which are all named after winning race horses. My room had a four poster bed which was lovely and an en-suite and was equipped with a telly, tea and coffee facilities and home made biscuits (see Josh later) and a scotch/gin dispenser, which I didn't make use of. After a day of walking the glorious moors I definitely needed some food, thankfully I'd booked a table at the hotel restaurant. We were served a complimentary amuse bouche which was excellent, mini loaf was perfect and the ginger really came through without over powering. First course was the burrata, which was nice and fresh. My main course was the Bubble and Squeak and it is amazing how a relatively simple dish made of "left overs" can be so incredible. I finished off with the Sticky Toffee pudding... It's excellent, much better than the one at the gastropub a hundred yards of so up the hill (I tried theirs just to make sure). The clotted cream is perfect and so rich. Josh in the kitchen is amazing he is a genuine asset to The Rock Inn. In addition I had the fantastic Dartmoor alcohol free beer which is probably one of my top 3 booze free beers now. The service is absolutely excellent, Sharon is the most friendly and professional person ever, she was very helpful with local knowledge and things about the history of the hotel, she is easily one of the best reasons to visit the hotel and also had a connection to my home town (tiny world), she was also very helpful in the morning when I need some boiling water and held on to our luggage while we had a second wander around the moors before our return home. Prices were reasonable and location is basically on the moors, I fear I may give up my wild camping and just stay at The Rock Inn on future Dartmoor trips.

We stayed at The Rock as we were seeing friends in Bovey Tracey. Great place to stay. The hotel staff (Jackie in particular) were lovely and very attentive. Room was clean and tidy with two armchairs. Loads of hot water and good shower pressure. Breakfast choices and food quality were excellent. We also had dinner one evening which was good. Beware that the road down to The Rock is quite narrow although there is a car park and also parking outside. Certainly will stay again.

Visited for an evening meal with our 10 month old son and young dog. Staff were super friendly and accommodating and even had the high chair ready to go when we arrived. Delightful gourmet food showcasing local flavours, quite a world away from normal pub grub! This remains one of Devon’s best hidden gems. Always a pleasure to stay here, comfortable and excellent food with friendly and most helpful service. It retains its old fashioned character which creates a wonderful ambience of yesteryear. Please don’t change it. Quaint it maybe but that’s its great attribute. The lovely photos of Dartmoor on many of the walls by Rob Hutchinson are a joy to the eye. We will be back again.

A huge disappointment. We went once before, and we thought it was good. This time, we were very disappointed. The food was so unexciting! Such a shame! What went wrong? And then to add a £16 cover charge! The Cheese mouse mille-feuille was quite frankly ridiculous. A few blobs of cheese, three rectangles of short crust pasty, some minute pickled onions and pineapple chunks, it was very bland, very expensive. The trout starter was dull too. Cod and squid ink risotto with some pickled fennel wasnt in any way exciting. The pork filet in in mustard cream sauce was good, but nothing special, it is very first term catering college food! Deserts, again nothing special! Wont be going back!

Went for lunch, picked from the set menu. £20 for two courses of this quality represent excellent value. This given the setting, the sevice and the ambience. This given that in my case, the starter was venison in a suet pudding and the main course was Gilt-head Bream on a roasted cauliflower base. If honest, I'm a bit disappointed to have to pay extra for a portion of chips. Portioned shared between 2 was needed. It would not stop me from returning or recommending.

Did order a side of chips between my wife and I. Think that that was about right for us. The waitress knew all about the smokers. Apparently, the artichokes were hickory smoked, you don't get that level of cuisine or that level service from your average eateries and at such modest prices.

It was purely by luck that we came across this gem of a place... I simply didn't want to cook and my hubby found it in trip advisor . We managed getting a booking for 12.30pm today. From the moment we arrived we were welcomed with a smile. As soon as we looked at the menu we knew we were in safe hands. Chefs clearly understanding and respecting ingredients. We went for. 2 course meal. Hubby had the starter which was a delicious blue cheese mousse, then both had the chicken breast which was cooked as for the vegetable to perfection. Plenty of vegetables too. No need to add any condiments which for us means excellence in the kitchen! The chocolate marquise was to die for too.... we will definitively be back !

Four of us celebrating a birthday. The restaurant in this pub/hotel is a cut above the rest and we have had wonderful meals on special occasions before. The service is great and the menu is interesting. The other 3 people in the party clearly had wonderful food again this time and great wine, but I had the steak and it was rather disappointing. It was an 8oz ribeye - and 2oz of it was inedible due to hard fat and gristle. It was also incredibly salty - I think it had a salt and pepper crust. The chips were overdone and also salted - I was actually quite worried about the amount of salt I seemed to be consuming. The peppercorn sauce was thin and watery with little taste and it was accompanied by half a roast onion which was described as caramelised onion. I would have expected tasty slices. It's very unusual to have a disappointing meal here, and it won't put me off going again, but for me this visit was under par

We’ve visited the Rock in numerous times over the last decade. Visited again for valentines day as it’s got a great atmosphere, staff are friendly and the food is always perfect. It’s an old English Pub with plenty of charm, log fires and heaps of character. So if you’re looking for something authentic, opt to sit in the bar by the fire, if you prefer slightly more modern, lean towards the restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

I popped in for breakfast and found it a bit awkward. The signs were to the breakfast buffet which I assumed would be an all you can eat for a fixed fee. Instead you order at the bar then take your ticket to the buffet where the chef adds the items you have paid for. I’ve been spoiled by breakfast buffets and left disappointed. There were only a few of us in there around 9:15am

The place wasn’t as clean as one would hope to find it, and the food on both visits was utterly awful: tasteless, overpriced, very clearly microwaved, haphazard, thoughtless etc etc. A bacon bap or sausage roll from Spar is significantly more tasty, filling and worthwhile.
