Ring of Bells Restaurant in Teignbridge

Avoid like plague! They will kick an entire family out and not honour bookings even though restaurant is empty! Awful awful service from the moody lady serving at the bar. I know that service around Devon is hit and miss but her attitude is some of the worst I’ve ever seen her in my life and I’ve seen a lot of bad service. So here’s my experience at this place today Tuesday 1st of March: I called at 15:54 and proceeded to leave a voicemail with my booking as there was no answer. I said we will arrive around 17:30/17:40, we are a family of 6 (2 adults, 2 children, 2 babies). I figured it’s a Tuesday and booking a dinner at 17:30 not exactly busy. 2 days prior I walked in the pub and asked hours of operation and the nice young guy there told me Tuesday supper should be easy and can call during the day, I don’t need to call days in advance. I then proceed to drive for 1 hour and 15 minutes to this place. I get there 17:30 start walking towards the pub, I see a young couple in the garden eating. I then walk in, apart from 1 other person the place was totally EMPTY…just like you would expect on a Tuesday at 17:30! I look around for someone but there was nobody there so I proceed to walk to the bar. Behind the bar the lady I was mentioning, she was serving a couple at the bar having some drinks. I then ask her politely “excuse me, who do I need to talk to about a reservation at the restaurant?”. She answers back snarky “me once im done here”. I’m like oh wow she’s really in a good mood. I wait for a few minutes she then walks behind the bar to her computer. She asks me if I have a reservation, i then tell her I called an hour and a half ago and left a voicemail. She replies saying oh I haven’t got any voicemails and just looks at the phone on wall without checking or anything like that. Obviously she was totally bs’ing me. She then asks how many people and when. I say now and we are 2 adults, 2 young children and 2 babies. She says “we are too busy we have a local dinner / local event tonight and only 1 chef we don’t have space.” I reply back “but I booked the place by leaving a voicemail, the restaurant is now empty (surely this event is not at 5:30pm???) and I drove over an hour with 4 hungry children to come here”. I even showed her the phone number I dialled in my phone and she confirmed it’s the right one. She then looks me straight in the eye and says “sorry…I can book you for dinner tomorrow” and proceeds to walk back to the bar. Great service right? Now I go back to the car and as my wife got all the kids out i tell her to put everyone back in. Obviously everyone screaming and hungry so have to find new place for dinner. I then drove for 10 minutes to nearby Bovey Castle (thank god this place is nearby) who had no trouble offering us dinner without a booking. If the owner sees the message I would appreciate if you could leave some contact details. This type of behaviour from staff is totally unacceptable and owner needs to be aware of it!

We visited yesterday with a warm welcome from the staff. The man behind the bar who served us (unsure of his name sorry) was super helpful and very chatty, The food was lovely also. Thank you for making us and our dog Chester feel very welcome. We hope to visit again one day.

Beautiful location & I am sure a summers evening would be a lovely place.

Nice place. Good outdoor area. Food good. Staff friendly and helpful. Down side is it's very over priced. I had the salmon with potatoes done in a sauce. Small portion, but £20.

Great service, roasts generally let down by the meat which was a little tough.

As like a home roast as you are likely to get, but just fell short on length of time serving food on this occasion. I wouldn't let this put you off, hopefully it was a one-off.

Great meal. The pub has changed hands a few times recently, with varying results. However the recent meal was really great. Good menu, prompt service and when it came the food was excellent. The ambience is always great, such a lovely old pub ( even the renovations due to the fire are tasteful). We vary where we eat locally and the Ring of Bells will definitely remain in the list.

Food was very good as was service. We had 2 small children with us who were well catered for. Would definitely recommend the inn for a meal.

Freezing cold had to sit with coats hat and gloves, also had to ask for blankets, ate as quick as possible to get back in the car.

Booked for Sunday lunch and food was exceptional. Service equally good. Mark makes a great front of house and manager. Lovely ambience. Oh and did I mention it’s dog friendly too!

We dined in the conservatory area last night but unfortunately our evening was spoilt by the large party in there. We appreciate that you came to us and offered us an alternative table in the bar area but as we had friends joining us on the next table we couldn't. To be fair at that moment in time I though the noise level was ok, it was New Year's Eve and they were having fun. Unfortunately they got louder as the evening went on, to the point that it was difficult to hold a conversation with our friends. As well as the noise level, some of them, not all, started swearing alot and were shouting down the table. We decided not to stay for dessert, which was a shame because I love a nice dessert. The food was lovely as always and your staff lovely. If we book again I think we'd ask for a table in the bar area. Happy New Year to you all.

18th December early evening. Landlord(or apparent maitre d) inattentive and no customer care whatsoever. We were the only ones eating for a while. Raining and had to rely on another customer to direct us to coat hooks in the bar. Inexperienced waitress. Ordered pheasant pie and she returned from kitchen saying "mince"pies were taking 30 mins! So ordered Venison not cheap but was in fairness good. No ambience bearing in mind pre Christmas. Were put near the bar and seemed that is of more importamce to the food On leaving landlord and waitress saw us and made no effort to respond or say thank you. One starter 2 mains one dessert and one glass of wine -£91! Received standard email from them that evening and responded with a scathing review. No reply received apologising Such a pity we are local and will not go there again and will definitely tell others to avoid it. It's a lovely venue but I'm afraid the management is appalling more a pub than hotel/ restaurant Interesting review from another this month about grumpy landlord. Hospitality needs staff with the right attitude and basic customer care to survive in this difficult financial climate. They'll lose a lot of business if they continue like this My review title above cribbed from a customer last year sums it up!

Very grumpy welcome and then half way through serving our drinks the landlord decided to do drinks for another table, making us wait. We had intended to order food but at that point decided not to bother. What a shame.

Excellent place to visit, nice large airy rooms, food fantastic flavours and plentiful portions. The staff were always in attendance. Overall a very nice experience and we will be back for more of the same.

Whilst the main course was satisfactory, the starter was not as it did not taste very nice at all. Having eaten here quite a lot over recent years, I was disappointed to find the food standard is beginning to deteriorate sadly.

On the whole would recommend… only negative is they do not have a great choice of vegetarian meals

For our local pub the food ambience and service was excellent Very attentive staff good food and drink and well worth coming back to for more . There again tomorrow night after the village school carol service !

Went for lunch with friends, service was very good, food was excellent. It was good to see the place busy, with a pre Christmas rush. This did mean it was a bit noisy, which made conversation a little difficult, but not unacceptably so. We always enjoy going to the Ring O' Bells, because it is so good and reasonably priced.

Lovely atmosphere and attentive service. The food was lovely and plenty of turkey on the Christmas dinner option, spoilt a little by being served in a cold plate. Really no ned for that. Lovely desert and coffee after. Overall really nice meal.

Lovely food and great offers on great value for money

Our First time visiting, glad we did the road divert due to a down tree blocking the road as the food was excellent. Will come back when next in the area that is for sure.

Lovely atmosphere, efficient service and I really enjoyed the small pudding and hot drink option.

We really like the Ring O Bells. But on the 1 Dec we had to wait for around 3/4 of an hour for food. I had the roast pork but it wasn’t very hot. My partner however loved his turkey. My only real complaint is the roast potatoes are huge but definitely not the least bit crispy Non of this will stop me revisiting as usually it’s excellent

Great find. Superb Sunday lunch. Friendly atmosphere. Everyone was helpful. We were served quickly but were not rushed. Appropriate time between starter and main. Will definitely visit again.

We didn’t stay here, just visited for lunch and refuge while we waited for break down recovery. The food was delicious and the staff were so helpful and friendly- they really went above and beyond. So grateful!

Great food with fast service, lots of children running around though so not as relaxing as it could be.

The 2 for 1 pizza offer was very good value. The pizzas were freshly made and delicious. Good choice of beers. Staff were friendly and very efficient.

Booking a table online was so easy for the date & time which suited us for Sunday Lunch. Staff greeted us & shown to our reserved table. We both went for the trio of meat sunday roast with was exceptional followed by the Crumble which had chunky fruit which was very tasty. Service throughout our time was first class. *****

Bar staff and managers were super. The pub was incredibly noisy. It's was quite busy so the initial wait to be asked for a food order was long. The main course took quite some while to come out. The food seemed like it had been waiting quite some while cooked before it was brought to our table..When the table was cleared and we were asked it we would like to see the dessert menu we were then abandoned. The staff were chatting away to other patrons who I assume we're regulars. We tried repeatedly to get attention to no avail. We got up eventually and went to the bar to pay. We spoke to a really lovely super manager who was very attentive and apologetic. He did offer us a discount which we politely refused, that wasn't the reason for our complaint. Sadly we won't ever go there again.

Great food, great value and decent service, but some really obnoxious customers standing in the middle of the dining room right over our shoulders and getting in the way of the staff, but nobody asked them to move. Really ruined our meal and we left with our pizza half eaten and boxed up.

Put on a table for two then a large noisey party turned up ruined the experience not just for us but other guests to staff should have told them to be quieter or get out

This was a lunch for myself and two friends. The food was very good and the service was outstanding! I would return for further delights there and so would recommend this eatery without reservation.

A lovely time today to celebrate my Mum's birthday. Good and varied choice on the menu. The staff were very friendly and efficient and once our order was placed it arrived very quickly. Definitely recommended as we've been here on lots of occasions.

Beautiful Dartmoor pub with excellent food & great service.

Whilst staying in a cottage almost next door to the pub, we ate there three times - two dinners & Sunday lunch. Excellent food, ambience - especially Sunday lunch which was very good value & extremely good! The young man who was there on all our visits was delightful - sorry but didn’t ask his name! Well worth a visit.

Delicious food and great service. Comfy seating and a relaxed atmosphere. Some background music would be a welcome addition to add to the ambiance. Highly recommended 🙂

Fabulous Chicken Supreme pasta dish. Loads of choice on the menu too. Great service. Two mains, glass of wine & coke for £53, mayhe not the best value round (the drinks are expensive) but certainly a nice treat.

Beautiful Devon village pub in Dartmoor national park. Superb service team and really accommodating for our lunch request. Worth booking ahead for Sunday lunch. Great local food and drink options

The food was nice but we waited nearly 1hr 15minutes for our food. With 3 young children this wasn’t really acceptable. We were offered some nachos while we waited, which we thought were complimentary, however they weren’t and we had to pay for them.

This was a family meal for 5 people on a Sunday teatime. The service was friendly and helpful. The meals were well presented and tasty. The two children were well looked after. We would certainly like to come again.

Service was attentive and friendly. A longer wait for food than we would have liked, but was worth the wait.

Outside beautiful but inside modernisation not in keeping. Church across the Green is well worth a visit.

Best night - 2 for 1 pizza. Our table was in the long extension, which is noisy, needs acoustic dampeners in there, as you can't hear yourself think.

We love Ring o’ Bells. The food choices are excellent and although I’m veggie, sometimes vegan, I’m always spoiled for choice! Last night we had the fantastic pizza off of 2for1. I had the spinaco which was a great choice, tho for me, I would have liked a bit more spinach! The pizza was cooked to perfection. My partner had the Quatro formaggio (his favourite) and he said it was the best yet!! Service was excellent with food and drinks- lovely house red wine at the correct temperature. A family with children sat by us and though some may have thought they were a little lively at 8pm, we enjoyed their joyful interactions. Thank you once again to the Ring o’ Bells team

I am a Christleton girl who hasn't been back to the RingOs for 20 plus years. Food was gorgeous. Service was fabulous. What a transformation... Won't leave it so long till the next time

Genuinely one of the nicest roast dinners as a family we’ve had out! We have a mixture of vegan veggie and meat eaters and our roast dinners where catered to for everyone they were very very nice , The puddings where lovely too, It was. Lovely birthday treat and we will be back x

Rooms, ambience and location great. However, if check-out is at 10:30, you are urgently informed about this time and the breakfast buffet is cleared away at 9:45, it is like being thrown out in an unfriendly manner.

Very good food and excellent service. Good menu range, including drinks. Good ambience, a bit noisy at times in the large restaurant room but it did quieten down later on. Would recommend

Took a Hong Kong friend to here last week - wish I had tried it before! The delightful, small village sets the atmosphere, and the Ring of Bells did not disappoint in any way. Attentive and friendly service, and the food was superb. Nothing "exotic", but all the better for it if the standard is good. It was much better than that! Will certainly return with a feeling of confidence.

Gorgeous pub in a gorgeous village. We hadn't booked and up at 3 pm, in-between lunch and dinner, so not not ideal for them, but they were very accommodating and served up some delicious ciabattas. Very dog friendly, excellent service. Decent real ale.

Usually a reliable place to eat with well cooked homely food, but we were left I bit disappointed in the overall quality of the food. Usually a safe bet is the fish and chips, but the batter was too dense and soggy in areas, so I just eat the fish. My partners pizza was too thick so wasn’t enjoyable to eat, considering they own Urbano 32 which specialises in pizza and the kids pasta dish from the kids menu was awful, it was a tasteless tomato sauce mixed with cheese, a jar of sauce from any supermarket would have been much better (sorry to say), our kids did not enjoy, who are 5 & 7 and should be easy to please. Simple checks of food going out seemed to have been missed and the taste and quality of kids food shouldn’t go unnoticed. Will return as the service is great and always enjoy the Sunday dinner. Putting this one down to an off day!

Off the beaten track but well worth the effort. This time we had lovely calamari and a Brie quiche, delightful. They serve good beer and a nice wine selection. It’s a nice drive through narrow lanes from Mortanhampstead, certainly worth it

Really enjoyed meeting up with family. 2 of us had the most delicious sandwiches….fillings a little different and 2 of us had fish and chips. All were well cooked and well presented. Staff friendly and helpful. Would definitely go again if we were in the area.

Quality dishes & pizza in a cosy pub in a pretty village.

Great food, great environment. A bit disappointed that when booking the table it asked if it was an occasion and we ticked yes. We had dad and grandad cards on the table for my 84 year olf dad but no one congratulated him.

For the price of the Sunday dinner, my expectations were higher and I was excited to try the ring o bells. We all got the beef- it was a white colour and very chewy. You couldn’t cut one persons share of a beef. The roast potato’s were so hard and overcooked, couldn’t eat them or cut them. Cauli flower cheese was hard and I only had one floret. Only one carrot and parsnip. I was just really disappointed for the price, I treated my parents for dinner as we were waiting on doctor results and we were just underwhelmed. Also we had a baby with highchair and put on a really small table next to the busy bar, so got some dirty looks from the waitresses as he just wanted to be out of the highchair. So that was uncomfortable so we rushed and left. No goodbyes, very miserable staff.

We really liked the pleasant restaurant and the stay there was wonderful.

This was our first visit with family. We were impressed with the attentiveness and friendliness of the staff. We liked the decor and the environment. We thought the choice of starters was excellent and they were all very tasty. We had the Arancini balls, crispy chilli beef and the gyzons. However we thought the choice of main courses could be improved. We moved outside to enjoy the sun and stayed for pizza. They were delicious! We would return but would prefer a bit more imagination on the menu for main courses.

The food was excellent but the service slow and inattentive - it was towards the beginning of service and it was getting busier when we left - so no real excuse. I don't think it was all the servers from what we could see - we were probably just unlucky. I would go again, in the hope that our experience wasn't the norm because the food was very good

It was a very nice surprise, having not been there before. The food was excellent with a good variety on offer. Sadly, there was only one choice of non-alcoholic beers. But an enjoyable experience none the less.
