We have tried this chip shop a few times now first time was lovely but this time was awful! Went to the shop to pick it up and waited absolutely ages for what we had. We waited about 25 minutes just for our order. We asked for two fish cakes, one saveloy, large portion of chips and a chicken wrap. We got given 2 saveloys even though we didn’t ask for it. The chicken wrap was just ridiculous, inside was 1 full chicken strip and half a chicken strip, there was more tortilla than chicken! Chips were rubbery and hard. Staff seemed like they couldn’t be bothered to take orders and was whispering rather than actually talking, only said one word answers. They were more occupied by the just eat orders that were coming in rather than the customers in the shop. Also charges more for food on just eat than in the shop!

this used to be the best chippy in essex, not just chelmsford. they had people queuing up the street for years. was back in essex recently and i have to say was not my cup of tea this time. been eating from here for over 20 years, but now the food tastes cheep and just not good quality at all. needs to get back to basics for sure cause the way it is, its not very nice now

I have been coming here for year but the last three visits, the service has been appalling. Whether its waiting is store for an order you were told would be ready half hour ago or a delivery turning up 50 minutes time despite calling the store who said delivery had left. On the last visit I was overcharged. I ordered cod and chips separate which is more expensive on the menu but the put it all in one box (told me it was the same when I called to query) but charged the extra amount! I was told the manager would call to sort a refund....but they never called or responded to my email. When you have been supporting a business for years its just very disapointing. Ive now asked for a chargeback on my credit card as that it being charged for something you havent actually received. The picture is of a medium cod and large chips ....

Absolute chaos front of house ! Been supporting this business for over 40 years Getting really fed up of on line orders taking priory over people who come in person Waited 35 mins outside and inside the shop to order and pick up simple fish and chip order on the way home from work! will get in the car and go elsewhere next time would get food quicker really disappointing

CHIPS WITH CURRY SAUCE Used this Chippy regularly over the years but not recently except for one time in recent years when I did a review on here and it was plain awful. So thought give it another try around lunch time when it would I thought be busier and hopefully OK. But not busy and not OK ie chips barely warm and not at all nice and curry sauce hot but virtually tasteless except for maybe the slightest hint of curry. Given the vast choice of takeaways locally and even up their street I really cannot understand how they can run a business and just cannot be bothered.

Ordered through website and although order was put down to come within 1 hour it came late. No communication to let us know it was going to be very late

I cannot believe the bad reviews - we had fish and chips as well as battered sausages - a large order for 10 people and it was delicious. The portions were generous, the fish so well cooked and lovely batter - we all really enjoyed the food and would recommend to others - definitely going again - thank you

Worst fish and chips ever . Actually thought they had given us 2 sausages instead of fish as resembled a long fish finger sausage type shape . Definitely not a piece of fish , must have been formed and made into this shape . Simple long piece of batter with small amount of fish in it . Batter wasn’t crisp just wet sludgy texture Vegan burger was equally awful and resembled an undercooked piece of meet in a bun with no extras except a small bag of salad on the side . No sauces , no nothing just a dry burger in bun Food was inedible so ended up paying £44 to eat chips ! Will never be going back again as it was the worst takeaway I think we’ve ever had , if I could give zero stars I would

Following an unusually 'not-as-good-as-normal' experience with a takeaway one week, I fed back to the outlet why I was not happy. It was taken seriously and I was emailed with an apology and a comment regarding a trainee server who was still learning her trade. On being invited to come back and give them another chance, I was delighted to see that standards were back to normal (in fact better than normal). Food was piping hot, batter was light and not greasy; chips were crisp and fluffy. Great meal - Thank You.

The shop looks extremely scruffy and the staff don’t seem to have a professional attitude particularly to hygiene in that in the 10 minutes I was there I saw all 4 of them touching their untidy ,uncovered hair and their faces without subsequently washing their hands. My online order had clearly been overlooked but no apology .One of the staff was sorting out tired looking salad and garnishes in very unimpressive looking plastic containers using her ungloved hands which she definitely hadn’t washed. This place must be trading on its name because it has nothing that makes me want to visit it again and appears to be unapologetically sloppy in every respect.

came here with my little nephew was really busy at the time as it was really packed with people coming in and out, however ordered x2 battered sausage and large chips and cod must have only been about 10 - 15 minutes in there waiting and tobe honest the mixed race girl (not to be rude ) was keeping my nephew well occupied and chatty whilst he was waiting bless him and i have to say some of the people in were hard work but the girls that were working handled it very well. would definitely order again

Went here as it was late and usual was shut, ordered Large Cod and small chips, cod was quite small and quite soggy and oily, staff and back of shop looked oily and grubby

At £4.90 you’d expect a large portion of chips to be large! Mine was boxed so when I got it home and opened it, it was tiny! The smallest ever! Serious rip off Robinsons. Not impressed. Try going to a few other chip shops and see their large servings and the price they charge!

Ordered 3 large cod and 1 large chips. Cost just under £33 Only went as we normally go to Mr Fish in Galleywood but closed on a Monday. Never again!! Wouldn’t call the cod large or the chips. Ordered food at 7:30 and didn't arrive till gone 9pm after two further calls chasing it up. Food arrived with the curry sauce exploded all over the food. Saveloys we ordered didn't arrive fish and chips were completely dried out!! So expensive and not good enough. Tried to call back but closed at 9!! Was our food sitting around and they had forgotten about it?? Don't recommend!!!!

Ordered online, payed for my food when an error code come up saying the payment was unsuccessful, called the store as the money was taken from my bank to be told that I couldn’t have my food and the money would take a couple of DAYS!! To go back into my bank! Rude customer service and completely unprofessional! Will not be returning

Thought l would do above because they used to be so good and my friends said how good the takeaway was.I booked home delivery a couple of hours before I wanted it using their website. 7pm delivery. 7.20 I phoned the shop. I was told who did you order with? Then they were very busy and that they were a delivery person short. It will be with you in a minute.Not impressed as I'd ordered early.7.25 order arrived. Fish very greasy, my chicken (see photos) nearly uneatable see how much l could eat. Chips good but expensive.So no l will not use Robinson again.I shall go back to my regular fish & chip shop (who don't do delivery) whose food is well worth the journey!

Placed an order online at 7pm, order arrived at 8.20pm. It was wrong. Missing pie, phoned them, was eventually told i need to take my missing item up with delver roo driver. Then opened the box to which should have had 2 medium cod in it, 1 looked like a battered sausage. Large and regular chips look the same size but very different price.Won't be using Robinson's EVER again. Only reason I'm giving 1 star is because I have to

Decided with the heat that we would get a takeaway. I have eaten here before but this was a few years ago now and thought we would try here again as been a long time, I don’t know if it was just a bad day but my food ended up in the bin, the scampi was burnt, literally had black bits all over it. Was so so hard to enjoy it. You could clearly see it was so over cooked, I couldn’t of sent that out personally myself but that’s just me. The chips weren’t much better and just tasted like old oil to me.As I haven’t been here for such a long time I’m hoping it was just an off day as previously food here has been really nice.

Used the website for the first time after getting good takeaway for years. They offer a fish of the day with chips. What arrived was close to inedible. Good chip shop but don’t go for the fish of the day, it was one of the cheap ones Lidl sell that is imported from the other side of the world! Not what you expect from what is normally a great local Chipie.

Decided to have our 1st lockdown takeaway from Robinsons and what a massive disappointment it was!!Always lived in Chelmsford and used to use Robinsons on a Friday night for fish and chips.I don't know if the ownership has changed, but the food was not good at all and hugely overpriced.Don't normally leave reviews, but just felt so ripped off that we had to write something to let people know what they might experience.

I have been to Robinsons many times before and after college and had always loved the company of the friendly staff. Ordered today off Deliveroo and delivery was fast with food delivered just right. The chips were amazing as usual and the saveloy and 2 sausages were enjoyed thoroughly. Thankyou for making our lockdown more bearable and of course we will be ordering again soon!

Great take away lunch for the family and delicious as always. Great tip - fry up the left over chips with onion and herbs and beaten egg for a tasty frittata the next day !

One of the best chip shops I've ever been to, lovely food, friendly staff, I go out of my way to visit as their chips are the best

my first visit. Shop was empty but it still took 20 mins to cook fish and chips. This is ok to a point. It's good to see the freshness of the fish being battered and then cooked, but the crispness of the batter then was lost waiting for the chips. If the food had been exceptional then all would have been fine, but it was just ordinary. There appears to be lots of choice on the menus and plenty of people were popping in while I waited, so seems like many people are happy customers. I paid 20 pound for 2 cod chips mushy peas, but not sure I would do so again.

We had family of 8 for dinner and thought we’d get fish and chips , our local one shuts on a Sunday so we phoned our order to Robinson - they told us to collect at 5.30pm but we still had to wait 15 minutes. The fish was soggy, the ribs were dry and the chips was greasy - I wouldn’t buy from there again , very disappointing

Plenty of staff but no organisation. Wanted 2 medium cod and 2 small chips but would only serve medium portions! Result, 1 portion of chips thrown away.

Had a quick takeaway as working late so it was in a convenient location.It was empty so served quick.Sausage in batter was awful. Brittle batter and so greasy. Horrible taste. When I took a bite the sausage didn't taste great.Chips were dry, almost grey with black bits. Didn't ask if I wanted wrapped or opened.Chip portion wasn't massive for the price.Worst chip shop I have been to for quality.

TERRIBLE Customer Service. They got our order wrong which was understandable these things happen, so rang them up to say there was items missing from the order and the response was ‘well we aren’t sending out a car just to drop of a portion of chips, so you’ll have to ring JustEat to get a refund’!!! No sorry about the mistake or offer to send out the item we have been charged for but never received!

First Impressions OK. 2 ladies serving Very polite and obliging [tall blonde and short dark]. Such a contrast to couple months ago when 2 ladies just couldn't be bothered. Dreadful Chips hard with lots of black bits and some greyish inside and must have been kept warm some considerable time as they were awful . Haddock was OK though bit small for a medium. Spare ribs just about OK. When old Mr Robinson and I think it was Wally used to cook the Que was frequently 2 shops down the Street. They have a good Trading Location which must be much the reason they survive. The Owner should be force fed with his own chips.

Went for a lunchtime takeaway , had sausage and chips. High price , poor quality food and an almost inedible sausage , will not be going back.

Often pop in lunchtime for one of their sandwich deals. Always greeted by friendly staff and food of a good quality. Their fish and chips are delicious and freshly cooked. Good on line ordering service as well so food is ready to collect.

On my travels to Chelmsford, I popped into this chip should for my meal. My wait time was minimal. I was greeted by two lovely girls who were a pleasure. Food was very good. It was a little more than I would pay in Norwich but that isn't a issue. Couldn't fault it

Waited 25 mins to be served in which only one lot of people ahead of me were served. Their order was wrong and took an age to fix. No acknowledgement, no apology to anyone who was waiting. Lost three lots of customers plus me in the time it took to serve two guys and they didn’t even seem to notice nor care. Give this one a miss.

Called in this evening for a takeaway savaloy & chips. One other customer in there and 2 girls behind the counter. One was serving the other customer and the other girl was doing all she could to ignore me. No hello or anything. When the other customer left the girl who was serving him engaged in conversation with the other girl and both ignored me. I’m standing there waiting to order whilst the staff were more interested in talking to one another. After a few minutes standing around being ignored I walked out. Customer service is absolute rubbish. Would I recommend this fish & chip shop ? No, I recommend you avoid it !!

Made to feel like it was an inconvenience being there. Was told abruptly that I had to wait for one of the items but I said that was fine. Said item was cooked and placed in the warmer but we were still no closer to getting out food. Everyone else was getting served before us, they were busy so I just waited until everyone was served. Then still nothing so I said “is that mine in there?” Again Miss Attitude slid open the door but couldn’t see it so turned to me shrugged her shoulders and said “where”? Again I pointed to it along with her colleague. Order was then prepared But was wrong and when I questioned it was again made to feel like I was in the wrong,got the order shoved under my nose and asked was this what you ordered? No not all of it one item was missing.

Website showed open till 7-00pm but when arrived at 6-40 door locked staff all around the door not open they said. Shame they do not keep to advertised opening times.

Staff are extremely rude, all young girls with attitude!! Waited 10 minuets in the shop before I was even acknowledged even though I was only picking up an order, there was three members of staff behind the counter and only one other person in the shop that had already ordered and was standing to one side waiting. After I finally got the food home the chips were still hard where they were not cooked as well as most of them being green!

after a long day out with the grandchildren popped in to buy tea for my partner daughter and son in law girl serving was lovely but the other one was rude snapped at the young girl didn't smile she needs lessons on public relations having said that food was good

Staff member provided the rudest service I have ever had anywhere. Not once did she smile, and hardly ever did she even make eye-contact. She dumped the food down in front of me in a closed box, with no request as to whether or not I required salt or vinegar. No eye contact was made at this point. I asked for a bag. She got one with a sigh and put my food into it, dumping it down in front of me once again with no eye contact.

On Wednesdays in Chelmsford, Robinsons are now doing gluten free fish and chips. This is a recently added service which looks like it will be extended to include Thursdays as well. The food tastes better and is very likely to attract more clients because the batter for the fish is now gluten free and the oil for cooking the chips in will be fresher and not used for cooking and non gluten free products

Always fantastic fish and chips.... would never go anywhere else. A true traditional chippy! Also do great sandwiches at lunch.

Chips had a meaty taste to them and were too thick, not soft and fluffy inside but very firm.

This is my go to restaurant for fresh chips, but wait, they have so much more. For being 100 years old and a small space, they have a large menu and I have never been disappointed. I usually get the fish or battered sausage. Others in my party like the Jacket potato and the breakfast sandwiches. The owner and his staff make you feel like family when you enter and will accommodate any special needs. I usually stand at the window counter and watch life outside while enjoying my meal and listening to the banter of the owners and customers. Love this place, great atmosphere and food is so good.

I've been coming here for nearly 20 years, and generally the staff are really friendly, but there is one middle aged woman with short spikey hair that is abrupt and frosty, despite that I have always been pleasant to her. a shame as the rest of the staff have been welcoming, especially the owner.

Really fancied fish and chips and didn’t want to wander too far to get it... had a worry about going to Robinson’s as last time bought fish and chips it was not good with dark pallor on the batter - tail end fish and oiley aftertaste .. well I should not have worried ... there has been a complete change! The fish was fleshy, and tasty and there was no bad aftertaste from the oils... the improvement was incredible! I am not saying this is the best fish and chips you will ever eat , but Robinson’s is back in my view in providing a very tasty naughty treat! Price wise it works out quite pricey about £8.50 ish but there is a lot of food and more than you would get if in a pub ! Keep it up Robinson’s!

I used to go to Robinsons 20yrs ago to get a takeaway with my mum and dad, we always had ribs. So driving through Chelmsford I reminisced about the ribs, so we decided to go and see if it was still there, and they were! And the ribs are as great now as they were 20yrs ago!! Great to see that Robinsons is still open and still cooking delicious food.

Easy to click and collect, Burgers were really good and piping hot fresh chips served in a cardboard box, very good portions. Cannot fault the two occasions we ordered via click and collect.

Casi me animaba a este lugar después de leer críticas negativas. Resultó ser la noche perfecta viernes lugar de cricket. La señorita detrás del mostrador era muy acogedor, agradable y simpático. Mi skate y patatas fritas era magnífico. Mis dos amigos tenían hamburguesas y patatas fritas que tanto disfrutamos, todo a un precio excelente. Comimos Esta abundante comida en el cementerio en la carretera, regados con un par de bebidas para llevar de Tesco Express de enfrente. Este era el estilo! Y mucho mejor que tener que sufrir la tarifa de oferta dentro del cricket. Sabemos qué hacer la próxima vez!

Está situado cerca del aparcamiento y cerca del críquet, un lugar ideal para comer algo. La bienvenida fue cálida y la comida estaba recién hecha. Fue así que tim aluminio sirve mantienen calientes mientras caminamos al parque para tener un sitio al aire libre. Un gran servicio de comida excelente, situado justo al lado de una tienda para adultos si te gusta eso

Used to be our favourite chippy and travelled miles to get there, but last Sundays chips went straight in the bin. Obviously been kept warm for ages and turned to dry concrete. Why cant staff check and dump them? Staff always miserable and constantly changing. That says it all!

Robinsons used to be the best chippy in Chelmsford but sadly this is no longer the case. Our last 3 meals have been appalling and I definitely won't be giving it another chance. Our fish today was dry, chewy and yellow and neither the fish or the chips were very warm. £16.40 for food that the majority of went in the bin.

The food at Robinsons is usually good but after we tried to resolve a mistake with the order and got rudely shouted at we won't be going back. They don't care how loyal a customer you are. The prices are high but they don't have the level of service to match.

If ever i'm in the area i always try and pop in if i fancy fresh fish and chips . With me i love the tail end of cod so they will always will say would you mind waiting of course not when you get the very best crispy cod for miles around and boy is it worth the little extra wait

Very good fish and chips but also have a very extensive menu. Always very busy and particularly so last Friday evening but the service was very good. Only problem was finding somewhere to park.

I have been to Robinsons so many times over the years but much less so recently. This review is a snapshot of my experiences based on a visit last week. Thank you for adding some chairs and reading material but it would be good if the staff actually smiled when you walked in! The food was average at best. The chips were squashed and soggy and the haddock was only reasonable although the batter was good. They seem stuck between having enough food ready to provide quick service - which then gets soggy - or providing a cook to order service which would entail delays. The place on Melbourne parade is now superior and you can tell by the number of people in each establishment. I have a real soft spot for Robinsons and I really hope they pick up. (I would go with cook to order, by the way, with a ticket system as Melbourne have.) Good luck!

Love a trip to Robbo's our local Chippie. The girls are always very friendly, the chips perfectly cooked with a Saveloy on the side and some onion vinegar A favourite of mine when I was pregnant and suffering with sickness! You can now order via Deliveroo too for delivery - hurrah!

Have bought fish and chips in here several times over many years. Sometimes it's been good not great, sometimes it has been poor to awful.Robinsons has been in Moulsham Street for so long and has a reputation for being good value and good food but in recent years I don't think it has been either.Only use it now if we can't get to another fish and chip shop.To be fair We haven't tried anything else that is in the menu, but maybe that is why the fish isn't as good as it was, there is almost too much else to choose from.Always busy though so I guess most customers like it.

I recently visited this well known fish and chip shop and I was happy to say the least with the outcome, food was delicious and was hot upon serving! Prices are excellent especially for what you get! My family loves the milkshakes and there's a wide variety to choose from! Staff were friendly, could hold a conversation and were able to tell me about what foods I couldn't have due to my allergy! I certainly will be visiting again.

Have to say was really impressed when ordering food from here from deliveroo, the food arrived on time, and was hot and delicious, we made a big order and it certainly wasn't disappointing. My only fault is the curry sauces are small for what you pay, but overall would definitely order again, and highly recommend, really good food.

This is definitely the best fish and chip shop, I visited on a Friday night which was very busy and I was very satisfied with how quickly I was served and sent on my way. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. I ordered a large rack of ribs,scampi, 2 medium cod and 3 large chips. The food was fresh and was cooked perfectly! I will certainly be visiting again!

I recently visited this renowned fish and chip shop after a few years and it is absolutely poor!!!I ordered large skate,medium cod,half rack ribs and a steak kidney pie with three portions of chips....Total price..about £30....waited 30 mins...shop had noisy staff..continually disappearing to take orders...the female fryer was loud,rude to staff and slovenly with the food to be cooked...Food was wrapped in acres of paper and very dry and overcooked upon serving...some regular customers it seemed just slouched on the counter playing with their phones without any correction from staff...I will not return...I get better service and quality from my local fish and chip shop in Cornwall at one third the price....

I have been going to Robinsons for 5 years since I moved to Chelmsford and the fish and chips used to be always brilliant. In the last year or so it has really gone down hill. Firstly I have lost count of the different staff that are on, everytime I go in it isa different face. I know this shouldn't be a problem but it really is. One night you can go in and get a decent portion, the next week another face and you get home and you have absolutely nothing in the way of food and this is really annoying when you spent good money and you have less chips then what you would get for mcdonalds. I have read a lot of reviews and I know I'm not the only one and this makes it even worse. I am sorry robinsons but this has happened 4 or 5 times now and I have had enough. I noticed many people have also moaned about the rudeness of some of the staff and yes it is true but I believe teaching the never ending staff you have what is a medium and large chips would go along way.

This used to be (some years ago) a quality chip shop, with the best chips in Chelmsford. Went tonight with my wife, from ordering (and repeating twice) it was a comedy show. The chips had been laying for a while and were soft and soggy, the bread roll was put in the microwave (to defrost) and was wedged in with the chips, it was soggy in the middle and hard around the edge. All the time the staff were shouting at each other and laughing. We had to remind them about the sauce and pickled egg we had ordered. We ate half as we were so hungry, and threw the rest. THE WORST EXPERIENCE, SAVE YOUR MOMEY AND GO ELSEWHERE!!!

Some of the staff are rude, and really do not know what customer service is. Food is ok but I wouldn't say it was amazing. It used to be a lot better but it has gone down hill. Management need to do some customer service training on some if the team as this is why I avoid the place now. Until I get treated better I probably will go else where.

My husband warned me about the massive portions, but I didn't listen. It's not often that I get to eat proper chip shop chips anyway, and so I wanted pretty much everything. I went for a large portion of chips, half a chicken and a tuna mayo salad (hubby asked if I couldn't just go with a 1/4 chicken like "normal people", but I'm not "normal people").I haven't had chips that perfect since I last had chips from a shop in my home town about 20 years ago. Thick-cut and just the right combination of soft, fluffy and crunchy, with no excess grease, I was in chip heaven. I didn't expect the half chicken to be so enormous, but what I've not managed tonight can be used in sandwiches tomorrow - and the skin was beautifully brown and crispy. We are definitely ordering again when we're in a chip shop mood.I might come back and review the tuna mayo salad in a few days; it's enormous, and will be my evening meal tomorrow. I have to say that it looks amazing.

This used to be the best place you could go for fish & chips in Chelmsford. Over the last few years, however, it's just gone downhill. The wait for food is getting longer and longer. The portions are now getting so small that a portion of chips can easily fit into the palm of your hand. It's getting worse every time we go, and because you can't see them dishing up the food, you don't discover it until you get home and can't take it up with the person serving you or the manager. The peas and curry sauce are always almost cold, and today we wondered if any attempt had been made to heat them whatsoever. The member of staff serving today was incredibly slow and did not seem to have much of an idea of what she was doing.Overall, it's very disappointing that after being satisfied customers for many years the food and the service seems to be on a rapid decline. We won;t be going here anymore, which is a big shame. However, it's not a one-off and we have stuck with them, hoping things would improve again. We'll find somewhere else from now on.

My favourite chippy in Chelmsford. Always a good meal and not too pricey either. Quick service but can be very busy at weekends.

I came back to Chelmsford after 50 years of being gone. Having fish and chips was high on my list. I live in the states and always remember how wonderful they were. My cousins took me to Robinsons to get them for takeway. I was not disappointed. The portions were huge and fried while I waited. Yes, they are a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. And I couldn't have been happier. You have one very satisfied customer. The young girl who waited on me was delightful. I will definitely come back on my next visit to England. The only thing that would have been better was if they still allowed them to be packaged in the old newspapers!!

This is my closest chippy and had always had a good reputation. I thought I'd give it a try as I was passing and I'm afraid whatever reputation it had in the past I was unimpressed. The fish was more batter than fish and tasted as though it had been standing for some time and the chips were nothing special. I can only assume that all of the good reviews on Trip Advisor are from people who haven't tried any of the other chippies.

This Fish chip establishment has had a good reputation over many years, but it is some time since used by myself, its all take away, with the range you would expect.

We got caught short on a Friday night in the Orange Tree pub.... and they were kind enough to let us order in a bulk order of fish and chips with mushy peas.The cod was lovely, chips good and the mushy peas needed to be hotter.But we had 7 portions in under 15 mins. Many thanks!

I really don't know what these bad comments are on about!Family business great people lovely food lunch time rolls and sandwiches are freshly made nice bread chips are great £3 for massive french stick with a choice of hot/cold fillings with chips or drink can't beat that.I love this place and is number 1 choice in chelmsford for lunch or evening fish and chips.

I have had fish and chips from Robinsons a number of times.Generally I have found the portions to be generous, and on one occasion I had a bit of cod so big the poor girl behind the counter had to break it in half to get it into the box!I would say that F+C is a little pricey here, at paying over 7 pounds for a large cod and medium chips, but it is well worth it and I no doubt will return if in Chelmsford and looking for somewhere to grab a quick bite in the evening!

First internet review ever, I am usually easy to please, but not this time. I ordered a large cod, small chips and mushy peas - a little surprised when it came to over £9! At that price you would expect it to be great, the shop certainly looks ok, hell I've eaten in sit down restaurants that charge less than that. As soon as I got my Friday night fayre into the car I thought it smelled odd, like dripping, or an old grill pan in a student flat. Upon sampling it when I got home my tastebuds confirmed what my nose has suspected. Now I'm no expert on these things (aside from having eaten a lot of fish and chips) so I don't know whether the oil was old, the fish was cooked in animal fat, they had cooked a copious amount of nuggets or something in there too, or a combination. What I do know it that the chips tasted like ok-ish chips and the fish tasted urm, awful. I mean it wasn't dry or 'off' or greasy, just tainted by an overwhelmingly rancid meaty strong flavour. In my time I've had mushy fish, dry fish, greasy fish, fishy fish, watery fish and even undercooked fish. All were at least edible, unlike this.Never again. I'm just glad I also stopped off at the Premier for Oreo ice cream, which may take the taste away. Do yourself a favour and take the extra few yards to Mrs Cod, I should have never strayed from them. Better prices, exponentially better quality.Being a fair individual I will say I approve of the packaging. Fish and chips in a cardboard box, not the usual turtle killing polystyrene trays lined with waxy paper and wrapped in half a rainforest. The peas were also in a recyclable / reusable mini plastic tub with snap top lid (imagine a lunch box, for a hobbit).

There is good reason this place is always busy and have extended their opening hours this year. They really are the best fish and chip shop in Chelmsford though the quality is dependant on footfall as they really do better when busy than when they are cooking just for you. The chips can be really special (crispy golden outside fluffy inside) though I can't recommend the butty (it does seem ridiculous to write that sentence) as they really are stingy on the butter and the mushy peas have too high a viscosity for my palette. Otherwise highly recommended and you won't find better without driving some way.

My usual fish and chips shop is closed for holidays so I googled fish and chip shops. Found the top ten list from 2014. This place was number one.Staff were very unwelcoming, one of them had hair that kept dropping in the food boxes (fortunately she wasn't serving my food). Ordered 3 medium cod with small chips and mushy peas. The cod were very small with thick, overcooked and greasy batter covering dry and tasteless fish. The chips were undercooked and greasy. For this I paid £21 and something.On a positive note (reason for the one star) the food boxes were good, and I was given a nice strong carrier bag.Wish I'd checked tripadvisor first as this seems to be normal now.

Traditional takeaway fish shop, as far as I'm Concerned it's the only fish shop in Chelmsford. Good quality fish and healthy portions. Shame it's not open Sundays

Having lived in Chelmsford all my life, I have sampled a fair few fish and chip takeaways. Robinsons has always been top! The batter is crunchy and full of good flavour, as is the fish. Cooked to order as well!

This is our regular fish and chip shop. Does what it says on the tin without any frills. Fish is always fresh. Service can be a bit and miss at times. It would help to have a proper queuing system on busy nights as you can lose your place quite easily

Quality food and fast service. There is usually a queue but they work quickly. But if you are looking for some very fresh fish well cooked this is for you.

Had some chips last week and they were inedible - soggy and greasy. Wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt because they are local and traditional, and they seem to have a high opinion of themselves, have claims to various awards etc. Went again today and the same story, yet again I threw away a soggy mass of potato masquerading as chips. Won't be going again, they need to have a serious word with themselves.

I'm a regular at robinsons and can never find a fault. The place is always clean and the staff are always welcoming and friendly. I had quite a big order, and although it was a busy Friday night, it was all correct AND still hot when I got home. My fav fish and chips

After reading all the bad reviews I'm really surprised by them. We found the food to be really nice and the staff really friendly. We ordered skate x2 and the price was very reasonable. Very happy with our visit. And would go again. This will be our new chippy.
