Lovely place to stop for a friendly greeting, a delicious sandwich and a great pint. Stopped there on our way to Colchester.

Friendly staff, fair price but watery veg. Nice roast beef on the Carvery but as a lot of the veg was in hot water ( brocoli, green beans etc) they were a bit tasteless. Shame as could have been a lot better. Surprisingly no peas ? May be a lot better in the summer.

Decent Roast, friendly staff. Good value for money. Quite a decent selection although had to wait for some of the meat to be replenished. Worth a visit and also support your local establishments!

We was really looking forward to this carvery after looking at website photos, however we were disappointed with the food, the beef was a cheap cut of meat which contained tubes, the pork was fatty and tough, the turkey was much more edible. Roast potatoes weren't at all cooked well they weren't at all crispy, the sausage and stuffing was cold and the cauliflower cheese was raw and watery tbh I've had better at a Toby carvery and thats saying something, we were asked 3 times by 3 different members of staff if our meal was OK I felt that was a bit extreme as we were trying to eat as quickly as possible due to the food temperature The staff were friendly and although I am honest with my review I do understand this is a fairly new venture and I hope my points of criticism will help to improve the business.

Really good value for money, for a midweek carvery there was plenty of good veg and meat. They also do gluten-free Yorkshire puds you don't always get, and there was a gluten-free dessert. We will be returning for a Sunday roast in the near future.

Me and my family had such a lovely roast dinner at the Roast House. We felt so welcomed by all the staff, and service was great. The roast itself is to die for.. especially the turkey and cauliflower cheese. Would highly recommend.

Arrived for our 6pm. Bought drinks and took a seat. Table was very dirty! Was told that there was no pork…just beef and turkey. Couldn’t see the turkey but the beef was small and dried out. All the food had been left uncovered, unattended, under heat lamps. Bowls of veg with just a scraping left at bottom. Very unappealing. And then we were told there were no roast potatoes either! Decided to leave it and go elsewhere. Very disappointing as was looking forward to a carvery. The breakfasts here were always excellent. Nice food and lovely service. But this carvery is a disaster. Badly managed. If you know you took a booking for 6pm surely you make sure you have roast potatoes?! Photos on Facebook look great but it’s nothing like this. Such a shame.

Today was my first visit to this carvery and my last, you get 1 yes 1 slice of meat, all the vegetables were over cooked, I'm not being picky but they were fine if you've got false teeth, so soggy, serving area is cramped and gravy next to people eating, not good, I'm afraid this carvery would not win any Awards, it was the worst Roast dinner I've had, and not very Hot,the only thing that's hot is tha the plate,Staff didn't even asked if everything was okay, even though we left most of it, so don't bother with this place

There has been much work done to create this hotel from what was a fairly run down pub about nine years ago I believe. Beautifully decorated both inside and outside and with new fixtures everywhere. Great to find sash windows that work freely, doesn’t happen often when they are not newish like those fitted in the Harvard Inn now. Quality furnishings and clean everywhere. Very comfortable. Good on site parking. Minor niggles: hate foam pillows and a little more selection on the continental breakfast bar would be nice. Sugar lumps don’t go well with cornflakes!. And some butter on the table with a selection of toast would be good. Also some more soft seating for hotel guests.

Food ok. Used here a couple of times just recently and must say that we agree with the other reviewers, it's not as good as it used to be and found the counter staff not very friendly or welcoming, however our waitress was very nice as she always has been each time we has been. Shame as way back it was always a friendly venue, must of changed hands.

I had a surprise 70th Birthday Afternoon Tea on the 9th March. It was delightful and the staff were very helpful ensuring we had everything we wanted. We were very well looked after. We had a room to ourselves and it was charming and magical! The sandwiches were fresh and tasty and lots of them. The cakes and scones were delicious. A big thank you to you all at The Secret Garden for making it such a lovely memorable experience.

Consistently pleasant which is why we come frequently, from food to service to atmosphere. Environment is nice for children, good atmosphere for football. We always enjoy our visits here.

A hidden gem in Chelmsford, the food was absolutely delicious from staters to dessert, and in a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere. Look forward to returning soon.
