Rivington Pub and Grill in Bolton

Meet up for lunch with friends. We all chose something different from the menu. jacket potato ,fish pie, sausages and sea food risotto. Every one enjoyed their meals . Service was good and everyone was pleasant. We will be going back.

Delicious food and I 100% recommend. I’m sorry I didn’t get any photos as I was too hungry! We got a leek and potato soup to start and then my husband got the mixed swinging grill which looked and smelt amazing I tried the chicken and it was delicious! Really good portions too and I had the lamb which was so tasty it just melted on my tongue! We only had to wait about 20-25 minutes as we both ordered meat but it came out pretty quick. I got so full but I tried my hardest to finish what I could. We will definitely be returning here! Thank you for your lovely and friendly service and delicious food!

Ordered the hanging kebab fillet stake with peri peri sauce with garlic, chips and salad. It came on a skewer not grilled came on skewer with two bits of vegetables with little sauce and six frozen chips. The other four members had Fries they got skin on Fries which as we buy from aldi and they were the same. After the meal my son stated the chicken burger was overcooked. Really poor will not return to an aldi frozen menu.

First time at this restaurant since it moved. Very impressed with food and service. Menu has good choices. All food arrived hot and was of good quality. The portion sizes were also good value for money. Based on our experience would certainly recomend.

Portion sizes don’t matter , you will leave full Food is great and resultant inside is great too Prices are also very reasonable for what you get

Visited the Rivington Arms with 3 colleagues very recently following a recommendation. Great atmosphere and absolutely fantastic food which was simply delicious. In fact it was so good we returned the following night and we’re just as impressed again.Most definitely worth a visit and cannot recommend highly enough.

We alwaya come here. Food is always amazing and service exceptional. Had lamb chips and Tirimisu. Fantastic tasty chips and a dreamy tirimisu. Staff are so pleasant. Full 5 ticks as always

3 of us went here for lunch, it was quite busy inside and out for a Tuesday but lots of areas to choose from. The decor is very nice.The service was good, our waitress ( I think was called Wendy) was very friendly. We all had different meals, all of which were good, and reasonably priced.

This pub is wonderful and the staff are brilliant. Love sitting out on the bowling green with my dog enjoying an amazing view of Rivington. Food is always delicious.

Brilliant meal out with friends, service from all the staff was exceptional, the food was outstanding especially the fillet steak I had which came rare, so hard to find a chef that can actually cook a steak. Highly recommended

Went this weekend. The food and service was very good. The restaurant is in a good location and nice garden and large temporary covered area for the current restrictions.

Went today for lunch, food was gorgeous and served piping hot ive never eaten out and got food so fresh and hot with hardly any wait at all. The service well was outstanding, I work in a resturant myself and usually always hate eating out because the service is usually horrendous , but I can not fault them at all. Straight away asked for drinks very warm welcoming and friendly. You should be really proud of all your staff. Especially young girl brown hair in a bun didnt get her name. Thank you for such a lovely lunch in these tough times it was the 1st time we'd been out since having our little lad and we will definitely be coming again. The dessert aswell lemon cheesecake was the best ive had id no sooner ordered it and it was in front of me. 5 star from me.

Had a really great meal here with my husband for his birthday. He had lobster ravioli and the mixed skewer. I had prawns and GammonWe both had tiramisuFood was fantastic. Homemade Tiramasu was to die for. All staff were very helpful and efficient. it was a joy to eat here. Will Definately be back

We ordered bruschetta and mushrooms for starters... frozen mushrooms in a bland sauce( no garlic) main course my husband orders steak and chips. He got some frozen cross between a wedge and roastie... ( only are the steak) I ordered chicken stroganoff with mash and veg... first time it was stone cold, second time it was mouldy!

Went to The Rivington Bar And Grill for a meal tonight to make the most of the eat out to help out offer before it ends. Been here so many times before and honestly never had one problem. Today was a different story completely though. Got there at 8:20 and ordered food at around 8:35. We were seated in an area of the restaurant where two other tables of families were sat without food, so we knew there’d be a bit of a wait. The family next to us had been there since 7:45 and still didn’t have their food by the time we ordered. Theirs eventually came out at around 9:15 after one of them went over to the bar to ask how long their meals would be. The woman at the bar clearly got annoyed with him, telling him to stop rushing her, and that their food wouldn’t be long. Her tone was disgraceful and I’m not surprised he was annoyed by it. Our food eventually came at around 9:25 and by that time, they had given up trying to eat their food as it was of an awful standard for the amount of time they’d been waiting. The woman went over to the bar to speak to the manager, who proceeded to get into an argument with her about the service, shouting in her face and asking another man (also seemingly the manager) for backup. He then started to scream in her face, swear at her, and tell her that he was going to phone the police (all because she complained about the food and the waiting time). He then began shouting at her so loudly and telling her to get out, that the family got up to go and their little boy was absolutely distraught. The manager was then shouting in his face as well with absolutely no regard for his wellbeing. After they left, the male manager was shouting aggressively behind the bar, swearing, flapping his hands around, throwing things on the floor. Horrendous evening on the whole so cheers for that. I feel sorry for the poor family but also feel sorry for the poor kids waiting on who are obviously subject to his temper on a regular basis. If you’ve not been here but were thinking about doing, DO.NOT.GO!

We have dined here on multiple occasions, what has happened during lockdown ? Swinging kebab is a favourite; however not tonight, with fatty fillet steak, and overcooked hard fries.Halibut Steak ? Should be firm and meaty , but was soft and squishy, and served with veg apparently aldente . But veg was too hard too eat, and we were informed too late for us to know We could have asked for softer veg, maybe when taking the order would have been a good time to let us know that ??On a positive note the waitress was attentive, Tiramisu was great, as was the Birra Moretti on drought and Cappuccinos.Will Be a while before we revisit. Please remember to fill the soap dispenser in the toilets, manageress was asked twice

I've just been here for lunch with my wife and son, the food wasn't all that great to be honest, but we thought that at least we were getting a good deal with the eat out to help out, we were wrong.On the menu it says 3 courses for £14.00 so for the 3 of us £42.00 plus soft drinks at £3.00 each so a total of £51.00........until we go to pay and are told that this offer is not on because it would put to much food on the menu??? This being the same menu that shows the offer!!! So lets break it down it should of cost a total of £51.00 with the offer on and would of cost me £25.50It actually cost me £47.00 with the maximum discount of £30.00 so it was in total £77.00So if the offer was on they would be claiming £25.50 back from the government but now they are claiming £30.00.....but it gets worse..... with the offer on I would of paid like I said £25.50 but because I paid £47.00 that is £21.50 extra there have made from me and another £30.00 from the government so a total of £51.00.I can only see this one way and that is as pure profiteering.I will of course not go back, for this reason and the fact that the food wasn't that great anyway. Just to say no were did it say on the menu or in the premises that the offer of 3 courses for £14.00 had been taken away.Shame on you

Good food pre and post lockdown ... Excellent service ... Friendly staff. .. homely atmosphere ... Recommended.

What a lovely place, even my youngest thought it was a hotel and we were going to stay over they have an even better outdoor eating area for good weather. Kids wanted to play out but we had indoor seating which had air conditioning. Food, the pictures speak for themselves. Definitely worth a visit ☺ we booked at 12pm so had choice of parking and less people but by the time we were leaving it was getting busy and I can easily see why.

I’ve always had this Restruant as a safe bet, but based on the latest visit. I can Safely say I won’t be going back!One of the highlights of a visit here has always been the quality of the Fish dishes. However, I ordered the Halibut Steak and it was an absolute disaster ie watery and tasteless, accompanied by a variety of ‘EMPTY’ shells!!Two of my Guests ordered Chicken “Strips” , which consisted of large pieces of ‘dried up’ Chicken coated in a tasteless Coating!! Honest advice —- Give it a miss. Oh and the Male member of Staff had his Mask around his Neck ie not covering his face, whilst consistently leaning VERY close to Female Customers a on the next table!!

Would give 0 if I could.We booked a table for tonight for 18:30, was seated, had our first round of drinks and our food order taken for around 19:00. After around 40 minutes of waiting, we asked about our food. We didn't mind the wait, as it was busy and completely understand with the new deal that it may have been a struggle. We got told it would be with us in a few minutes, so we ordered another drink and waited. 10 minutes later, still no food and the drinks finally arrived, the coke needed changing as it just tasted like soda. I went up to the bar, to let them know, to find that the syrup had gone, but instead of changing it, they had been pouring soda into the bottom of the glass, and topping it up with a bottle of coke! The woman behind the bar had no idea how this could taste like soda, we eventually got 3 new cokes, just bottles this time. Just to add here, as we was waiting to sort this, we saw people in the waiting room eating and we still had no word on our food! In the end, after waiting an hour and a half, seeing people be seated after us finish their meals and leave, we decided that enough was enough. Ended up leaving with empty stomachs, without even one apology or explanation. Alot of things can be forgiven with good customer service, but unfortunately due to the lack of this, we probably will not return.

I have been to the pub in the past several times and thought i would give it another visit. I looked at the menu for a Vegan option and I couldn't find one. I rang and asked if they could accommodate me in the party. I was told NO!!! I'm appalled that in this day and age with the growing number of people being vegan this restaurant are not trying to help. This is the first place that I've rang and who have said they can't make anything for me. Because of this they lost a booking for a party of 4. Unless they change and accommodate all tastes they will lose a lot of business in the future.

Visited here on a Sunday with my boyfriend and another couple. Waited at least an hour after ordering food until it was brought out - we were okay with this as it’s clearly a busy time for them and we were chatting amongst ourselves anyway. There was a small delay between the first two and the last two dishes being brought out. When asked if we would like anything else one of the other guests asked for mayonnaise, this was never brought to the table. My partner ordered Fillet Rossini (£20 dish) and asked for it to come rare. The middle of the meat was cold, not just room temperature cold but refrigerator cold. He politely asked the waiter if the chef could warm it up. The waiter then asked “so you want it medium?” to which my partner replied “I wanted it rare, but it’s cold, so if it’s medium-rare after re-heating that’s fine”. My partner has worked as a chef himself in Italian restaurants and certainly knows how meat should be cooked but he remained polite throughout. 10 minutes later the waiter returned with the dish and it had been cooked to well-done and was too tough to eat. At this my partner then went to explain what had happened to the manager as we weren’t prepared to pay for a £20 dish that wasn’t cooked right. The manager was rude and dismissive, said there wasn’t an issue and the chef insists there was nothing wrong with the dish. One of the other members of staff initially said she would take it off the bill, but then returned to the table to say “the chef said you have to pay for it because it’s been eaten.” (He had eaten about a third of the dish, enough to get towards the middle where it was cold and raw). At this my partner showed her the dish and said “I’m sorry but does the chef believe that this is medium-rare?” She then asked my partner to come to the bar to resolve things so the conversation wouldn’t be in earshot of other customers. At this point another member of staff asked if we were finished with the dish at which point I asked if she would leave it there (just in case there was further dispute about how it was cooked, then the dish was there in plain sight). She then tried to take it again and tried to take it out of my partners hands despite me asking her to leave it on the table. Eventually the meal was taken off the bill, but the only single apology we heard through all of this was from a pleasant blonde lady behind the bar who hadn’t actually been involved, none of the other members of staff involved or the chef gave an apology or quite frankly even cared that uncooked food had been served. I personally quite enjoyed my food but given the shocking customer service and how it was all handled I wouldn’t be returning again.

A friend and I ate here on Saturday afternoon and found the service to be terrible as well as some of the food cold. On arrival we waited to be shown to a table and a group of 4 came in after us and waited behind us. A waiter arrived and immediately asked the group behind us if they wanted a table, but kindly of them they did point out to him that my friend and I were ahead of them. The restaurant wasn’t busy so everyone was seated very quickly. We had been walking and were looking forwards to hot drinks to warm up so asked for cups of tea and my friend, who is dairy intolerant, enquired as to whether there were any non-dairy milk’s available. We were very rudely told by Dorian (our waiter) that ‘we only serve proper British milk here and that’s the one with the blue cap!’. Was totally unnecessary to make a comment like that so rudely and we were left a little taken aback. Understand that they may not have had alternatives available but there's a way to say it politely. We didn’t have to wait too long to order food, however it took an age for the food to arrive, considering the restaurant was fairly quiet with only a few other tables occupied as we had come in after the lunchtime rush. When the food finally did arrive, we both found our chips to be stone cold. The rest of the meal was warm but the chips had clearly been sitting on the side for ages. We found all of the staff to be rude and talked in a slightly aggressive manner, no one asked how our meal was once we had it, in fact all the staff seemed to disappear once our food had been plonked down on the table, so much that we witnessed a lady from another table walking round the whole restaurant looking for a waiter as she was wanting to place her order. Although the food was tasty, half of it was cold and the service here was awful which really ruined the meal for both of us. Would not return.

Decent food and service if not on a busy day. Over the weekend , it is very busy and this reflects in the quality of food and service. During the week, when quieter it is 5 star, hence the overall 4 star.

We have been coming here for several years & always enjoyed the food, the atmosphere & the service. The staff have always been so lovely & attentive. We came here today & experienced the worst customer service. I asked for a pint of iced tap water. I was brought a bottle of still water with a small glass with ice and lemon. I then said that I asked for tap water in pint glass with ice & lemon. With NO apology at all except an "okay" he took it away and brought me a pint of water. No ice. I felt very picky but I made another point of saying "excuse me I asked you for a pint of iced tap water - theres no ice" without again NO apology he just picked up the glass & walked away bringing it back with ONE ice cube in the water which I then felt was insulting me. I've worked in the restaurant business for a long time and to serve water like that was disgraceful. And the attitude was not acceptable. So basically if you are willing to pay the £2.60 for the small bottle of water you get it served in a glass with ice & lemon. However you ask for tap water & suddenly ice & lemon arent included! Very bad customer service!! The food was quite good & the portions were generous. However not once - between all three staff - did one of them ask how things were for us. When the bill arrived surprise surprise the bottle of water was on it. We pointed this out to be told "I'll take it off......" THAT WAS IT! No I'm sorry about that I shall get it removed off the bill etc.... no just utterly rude!! As I said we've come here for years but clearly the staff are in dire need to be re-trained - and FAST before they loose ALL their customers. Because unfortunately they have lost us. We will definately not be returning. Try The Cherry Tree or Hawthornes - but I wouldnt recommend here. It's gone severely downhill & have NO idea how to treat customers. Avoid!

Booked a table for four people,arrived and seated on time, menu very extensive and reasonable prices, I ask the waiter for chicken skewer which comes with chips if this meal could be made gluten free yes was the reply. All our meals arrived excellently presented and tasty just as good, however two hours later being coeliac I had been glutened lasting well into the early hours and leaving me very uncomfortable for the rest of the day, which will last for a couple of days yet. I rang the restaurant spoke to the chief who assured me his restaurant was very gluten free friendly and I could not have been glutened at this restaurant however my body unfortunately knows better all the other three people we pleased with what they ate

The Place was busy, good atmosphere. Ordered our food. starters were lovely: goats cheese, prawn cocktail, garlic mushroomsThen main meals came Veronese chicken lovely meal but was drowned in the sauce, I had the sausages and mash, very tasty meal but I really do not like my food drowned in gravy. would be so much nicer if gravy was in a gravy boat and then you can decide on how much you pour on!! Also the portions are way too big !!! And another bugbear of mine is I like hot plates, the plates were cold.Ordered sweet, forest fruits cheesecake, again same problem, it was covered in this horrible sticky red sauce, I asked for icecream and got aload of cream and icecreamIt would have been so much nicer with just the cheesecake with fruits on top and just icecream on the side. This is constructive criticism, I enjoyed the meal but it could have been so much nicer with a little bit of attention to detail

We just wanted something cheap and cheerful mid week. We just called in and were very happy with what we found. We had the midweek special, 2 course £12.99 we were so full. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. The calamari was slightly overcooked but that was our only winge.

Over the years we have been very regular visitors to The Rivington but sadly this time it was poor overall. We booked a party of 6 for 5pm but weren’t shown to our table until 5.30pm, although a party of 6 who arrived at 5.15 were shown to a table straight away. We gave our order at 5.45 & our starters arrived at 6.05, which was fine. All the starters tasted very good. Our mains didn’t arrive until 7.20 which was far too long & we had to ask a waiter to check how long they would be. He said 2 minutes but it was 15 before they came. My hanging mixed kebab was very good, with one having an excellent steak & others having Sunday roasts, which were also very good. One had the lamb shank but it was poor, & seemed as though it had been plated for some time & kept warm. The mash was tasteless & lumpy. The dish was taken off our final bill as it wasn’t eaten.No staff asked at any time if we were needed drinks or if the food was ok & they seemed directionless. People vacated tables but they weren’t cleaned down for some time while customers were waiting. The staff, including the head waiter, seemed as though they were walking round in a daze until they were asked to do something, instead of being efficient.On leaving, we were told that the manager had left before Christmas & the chef had come out of the kitchen to do front of house. Obviously it is taking time for him to settle into the roll & get his staff up to speed

Went for my birthday meal and was very disappointed. First of all two of us ordered garlic mushrooms - the sauce had split and it was just mushrooms in a bath of oil. Chips on main smelt old and were full of black and green mould.The waiting staff were very ignorant, constantly had to get up to grab their attention. Food was just put down with no offer of do you need any condiments etc.The place looks lovely inside and with the right management this place could be amazing. When you go out for a meal you pay for the whole experience and was left feeling let down.

2 family visit. Restaurant wasn't busy at the time of the visit however we haf to wait near an hour for food. At no point were was asked if we would like another drink whilst waiting. When the food arrived it was dumped on the table and all staff left, no offers of continents or enjoy your meal. The food was average at best, the steak burger was well over cooked and burnt in places. Disappointing really as we waited so long for meals that was just not up to scratch. I would not return here nor recommend.

Customer service ZERO stars We went here for Christmas Day and I was charged £55 for an extra person that wasn’t even there and for 3 drinks we didn’t even have. As expected it was extremely busy so I spoke to a supervisor over the telephone later. I have since been in; (was dealt with by an exceptionally rude woman) I’ve sent two emails and a letter and I have STILL not got my money back

Thought we would treat ourselfs as last time we came here it was lovely . Its gone down hill . I had fish and chips the fish came like been in sun te sun all day it was all curled up.There wasn't much fish to it mostly batter. The Mrs has the calamari it was dry and rubbery. The rissotto was tasless. Service was Here is you food and dumped on the table . Its a shame as we had been here before and loved it .

We booked here as a large group as heard good things from others.Some of us opted for the 3 for £13.99 deal and others opted for normal priced food.When it came to the bill it was very complicated how they had worked it out & we ended up being £16 out which we covered and didn't want to accuse anyone of our group as under paying. There was confusion with how they set out the 3 for one price meals and desserts which should have been included in that area were priced separate, when this was raised they said we should be grateful as someone in our group who only had a two course not 3 course was getting their dessert cheaper?? Very confusing and interestingly similar outcome on another review below.Food was average, some of our group enjoyed others didn't. Most notable was people's food arriving and then the rest of the groups meals being some time after.The chips that people were looking forward to were more potato rostis.On the whole the staff seemed pleasant enough but the confusion with the bill even when challenged ruined the experience.

Previously we have had good experiences of this place, but today it took 2 attempts to get the drinks correct, 2 attempts to get the first courses correct. Fish pie was sadly lacking in fish, and came with veg which included black cauli. 1 person in our group received her main course as the rest of us were finishing, and then only after chasing down the chef who was 'too busy talking to suppliers on the phone'. To cap it all the bill was wrong. We will not be back in a hurry!

Started well, ended badly We had an issue with desserts and waited 1/2 hour for the bill.Generally these matters could have been sorted but the rude manager walked off to serve some drinks to a table whilst i was explaining to her at the bar what had happened. How to make a dissapointed customer feel even more devalued!! She wanted to make us wait even longer when part of my issue was lengthy waiting!!!She also felt I should be happy with one dessert being knocked off the bill when we paid for and for two!!!!

Booked the Rivi for the 3rd year running, however it was a disaster. We were on the 3pm sitting, but the 12pm sitting who should have vacated at 2.30pm were still on the tables. I had requested a table overlooking the bowling green, as last year we were in the "front room" and were surrounded by rowdy children. We were lead to a table in the "front room", when I complained the lady with the seatting plan basically said it's this or nothing! When I explained why we wanted the conservatory she stated there were no children near our table, baffling, as there was a pram parked right beside us I complained to the manager who said she would send the lady back to us to resolve, we were there until 6.30pm, never saw her again. The table was not set up for us, no cutlery, no glassware, no serviettes. When we enquired about our starters the staff were very abrupt, obviously under pressure. Starters arrived at 4.30pm. When we finished and went to pay at 6.30pm the people who were on the 6pm sitting were getting very irate, bearing in mind we should have vacated our table at 5.30pm and were running an hour late, so I dread to think what time they got their Christmas dinner. I have to say it spoiled our day and we will not be returning to the Rivington again, as they take your money, but ignore any special requests and it is obviously run to their convenience. Regarding the food, it was good when it arrived, however if you don't eat roast potatoes, on Christmas day, they are the only spud on the menu. SHODDY.

Had walked up rivington pike with hubby and 2 teenage lads and fancied a bite to eat. Found this place on google and headed over. Promptly seated. Short wait to order drinks and food but absolutely fine. Boys ordered pizzas, hubby had a vegetarian baguette and I had 2 starters - soup and chicken livers. But if a wait for the food, but was in no rush so it didn’t matter. All food was lovely. Couldn’t fault it. Asked for more bread (toast) to have with the livers - no problem. Will definitely call again.

6 of gathered here from a long distance to have a family New Year's Day get together. To start with we had to wait nearly an hour to get our starters but things really went 'down hill' when we got our mains. I ordered fish and chips but the fish smelled and tasted 'off'; this was replaced but came back with recooked chips and peas which were hard and all inedible. In the meantime my daughter couldn't eat the lasagne which was mushy and tasted unpleasant. My partner's flash steak was tough and my brother in law's vegetables were hard. By this time none of us were enjoying the food. Then a male member of staff appeared at our table who we assume had come to talk to us and to treat us like respected customers; however he became defensive, very loud and aggressive and argumentative and would not listen; he spoke to us like we were in the wrong and didn't appear to be bothered about the rest of the customers nearby! He obviously was't trying to resolve matters and continued to raise his voice and argue; it became so bad that in the end me and my daughter had to leave the table; we ended up in the ladies toilet shocked and upset. When we went to negotiate the bill we were offered a £20 discount! I wasn't prepared to pay anything for such an appalling experience but another member of our party, who probably didn't want further confrontation paid the bill. We asked for the manager but were told that there wasn't one. We have never experienced such unprofessional and disrespectful treatment by a member of staff in a restaurant before. Our family get together was ruined and we left disgusted and in shock really.

We've eaten here a couple of times and always enjoy it. Loads of choice and lovely specials, in particular the Seabass which is gorgeous. The kids love the meals, and the southern fried chicken was really tasty. I dropped a point because the veg is an afterthought but I enjoy my veg most of all. This was overcooked pre-packaged stuff with no colour of flavour. Also we have to shout for waiting staff attention if we want more drinks, sauces etc. But the staff are very friendly and polite none the less. The highlight was the hot chocolate fudge cake with cream which the eldest child devoured and and the ice cream is beautiful and creamy. We'll definitely be back it's a nice place. Thank you.

We have only been here once before. But today we visited as a family of 5. The food was perfect. Staff are brilliant. Especially Wendy who was knowledgable and helpful with my having to have a gluten free menu. Can't wait to visit here again. Our new favourite place. Keep up the good work. Loving the swinging kebabs.

I called today with my family, we had various dishes of the extensive menu, everyone loved it. I can recommend the seafood risotto,best risotto Ive ever had. We were waited on by Wendy who went out of her way to be the most helpful, knowledgeable and friendly waitress, will definitely go again soon.

I get that they are very busy but they didn’t have the decency to tell us that it was going to be so lbad bf even though they knocked off the puddings it still should be better

We were booked in for our Xmas meal at 3pm. We arrived but the 12-2:30 sitting were still being served. When we booked, we asked to be seated in a specific area of the pub. We couldn't have been say further away. It took ages for v the order to be taken. For an option, at 4pm I was googling takeaways open on Xmas day. At 16:23 the waiter approached with the appetisers. SOUP, PATÉ, MUSHROOMS was barked at us. I found the waiting staff to be abrupt. Appetisers had, I ordered a bottle of wine from the bar and when that wad brought to the table, that was wrong and had to sent back. 16:55 and our main course came. I ordered steak and I had to ask for a steak knife. Everything about dining here on Xmas day just seemed like hard work. By 17:25 we were on to desserts. 4 out of 5 came together. The 5th one came whilst the others were half way through theirs. Desserts done and no chance of a coffee and/or a mince pie as they don't offer these. As we were expecting guests to arrive at 6:30 at the house we were spending the evening at, everything now felt rushed. We'd paid a hefty deposit for the pleasure of dining here on Christmas day. I would've quite happily walked out at this point without paying the outstanding balance but the more conscientious in the party wouldn't. The food was good but it was definitely let down by the lack of staff for the amount of customers booked in plus the abrupt waiters. After having to wait for the pleasure of having to pay the bill, I felt sorry for the diners who'd booked for the evening sitting.

Vistied the pub for a work Christmas meal. I was already excited to go before we'd even arrived, Purley because of the amazing menu choice and the reviews from friends. There is so much to choose from on the menu, I will have to pay a few more visits. The food is spot on, so full of flavour and generous portions at a reasonable price. 100 recommended vistting, I'll be coming back, staff are lovely and plenty parking.

Came to eat here tonight mums first night out feeling ok after chemo. Starters came she ordered olives fresh bread came with toast no fresh bread spoke to waiter he ROLLED his eyes asked speak someone else lady came off argued with us saying it should come with toast I said well it should state that. Main course came mum ordered lamb Henry. Potatoes/mash cold gravy fat and full of fat on lamb.Spoken to the same lady as no manager in. She was very rude and didnt let us as customers speak. All of our fries was white uncooked my dads chicken should of been breaded NOT spicey he couldn't eat it.Same waitress argued at my mother and father we asked for bill.Not one customer service skills in your staff what so ever. We rated this place so much it was only April we had our grandmothers wake here tonight was disappointing and absolutely disgraceful how.we was treated.

We had a beautiful lunch. The service was exceptional. Waiter so very pleasant and accommodating. Nothing too much trouble. The food was delicious. Simply perfect!

Went for lunch, picked the marker special 3 course 12.99. Amazing had chicken liver pate starter, perfect . My partner had the bury black pudding which he loved. We both had Angus min steak for main. Perfect. Desserts lovely. Recommend a visit . Was during the week so quiet, even the house red was a delight. We definitely be visiting again.

Lovely restaurant nestled at the foot of the hill.. lovely food enormous chips . Good service . We had a table overlooking the bowling green .

Been here many times over the years and never had a bad meal. Food always warm and good quality. Children eat free with adult meal before 6pm and great mid week market menu so excellent value. Wide range in the menu so something for everyone. Clean and nice decor. Good little local and a family favourite of ours!

Driven past the pub for years. I was told it had changed and was well worth a visit. And it absolutely was. An amazing choice. I had the beef stroganoff and it was delicious came with rice and the rice was so tasty too. Service was excellent and the place was really nicely decorated. I am really looking forward to going back and trying something else off the menu.

Just come back from a family party at the rivington. From ordering to paying the evening went well. The food was good ,for everyone and there was nothing wasted. The place was quite empty so we have no experience of busy. We'd try it again especially as the children went free.

We had a terrible experience here recently and our family celerbrations were ruined by very poor food and rude staff. One starter was sent back and two main courses were un-eaten due to such poor quality and a lot of food was left on the plates by those that attempted to eat theirs!!One member of our family sent back a fish dish which she did not order. The staff argued that she had ordered it off the specials menu, impossible as we were not even shown a specials menu and did not know of its existance!! The fish my family member ordered and didn`t get was off the " normal " menu. We were apalled by one young waitress whose lack of manners was disgusting , shouting and argueing with us in the most obnoxious way.It was very pricey for the type and standard of food we receivedWe will not be visiting again and certainly would not recommend it to anyone

Market menu two courses for £12:99 excellent value. Black pudding and goats cheese to start both served with a fresh salad both were superb. Fish pie with fresh vegetables and minute steak with Diane sauce chips and vegetables. Couldn’t fault anything. Good service and value.

Brilliant that kids eat free with any paying adult, makes it good value. Food was delicious and my son said it was “amazing”. Great service and lovely clean surroundings. Staff were really nice. We will be back!

Went for a family Sunday Lunch at 4 pm. Although it was packed the staff were attentive and efficient. The food was good and excellent value for money We will be back.

Been coming to your pub for years but yesterday was awful. We normally sit on the terrace but as it was full sat around the back on the former bowling green. It was like a crèche!!! I understand that people need child friendly places and kids need to play but it was manic. It was made worse by the families who arrived with a full boys' football team in tow and who proceeded to take over the green for a game, pushing out all the smaller children. Ended up going inside, on what was probably one of the last few nice days of summer, to get away from the din. Sorry but there needs to be more control, youbwouldnt want lose dogs running round like that and pubs are supposedly for adults!

Wonderful family visit for a birthday celebrating. Great choices from the menu something to suit everyone. Beautiful food

Four of us had an enjoyable lunch. Nephew had the Mixed Grill which was quite a plate full. Also had the red snapper, very good. The deserts were seriously good - chocolate fudge cake an the sticky toffee (good, good).We had been here a few years ago and also enjoyed this visit. It was now busy at this lunch time.

We can't fault this place. Excellent food, great service and lovely atmosphere - one of our favourites. The portions are generous and good value for money. The fillet swinger kebab is a must. The outside seating area is lovely in the summer and the interior is cosy in the colder months. We plan on returning soon for a family birthday meal and are very much looking forward to it. Try it - you won't be disappointed.

Me and my friend went for Sunday lunch today for my birthday meal . I was very disappointed as meal was just ok the supposed beef /lamb /pork was all sliced like when you get boiled ham from a supermarket and we could not even decide what meat was what so we will certainly not be going there again !

First visit here went for fish and chips from ordering the meal it was literally on the table within 5 mins, the fish was greasy and rubbery and the chunky chips where quarter potatoes fried and sadly tasteless, i made the staff aware and they replaced the full meal. Sadly the replacement was only slightly more crisp the 'chips' where the same. The food is clearly pre cooked which is a real shame as the venue itself is could be of restaurant standard. Sorry wont be returning.

A "Gastro Pub" seems to do a lot of what is done elsewhere, but that title appears to be free licence to keep prices high! Especially for soft drinks that come from a fountain! I would have to say that food slightly above average, with exception of the "Kebabs" Cooked very nicely! Only complaint there is which idiot thought to have kebab skewer hanging vertically over a small dog bowl sized dish of fries! No other plate supplied! So you can imagine the effort and mess made when your fillet steak and chicken fly all over the table! 2 smaller skewers on a skillet would be far better! I'm glad I caught my steak before it jettisoned onto the floor!

4 of us visited on a Sunday evening and it was fairly busy. It has an extensive menu and specials.All of us enjoyed our starters of Parma Ham and Melon, Calamari, Soup and Pate, good presentation and good portions.Mains of Sea Bass, Pork Chops, Rump Steak and Scampi were just as good and again good sized portions.No room for sweets or coffee but i am sure they would be good.Service was excellentBased on this experience i would certainly recommend this Pub and Grill. Also good value for money.

Took the dog before we went up Rivi for a walk. I had the chicken kebab 😱 was gorgeous. Husband had meatballs and said they were tasty. Lady behind the bar was lovely too. 👍

I have never visited the Rivington bar and grill before, i have often drove past but never been in. So for a change of scenery, we decided to go for a sunday roast, me and my family.From the outside it looks like a local pub, its right next door to blackrod train station. But when you step inside the restaurant area, it is a bit more up market than your local pub. The restaurant area is very well presented, with various seating arrangements. We were kindly shown a table as soon as we entered and was given a few minutes to choose from the menu and drinks. I went in hoping to have a roast dinner, and the roast was on the menu for £7.99 - with a choice of chicken beef and lamb i think it was, the menu said 'from £7.99' but i was told any choice on the roast option was £7.99 - i then noticed KIDS EAT FREE. So with every adult meal, you get one free children's meal, all day every day apparently - and considering the kids meals are £4.99 this was a decent saving. I had the beef roast, my partner had the lamb roast, my daughter chose the kids spaghetti bolognese and my son chose the kids chicken chips and beans - he didnt want beans and preferred veg and gravy, and the 'waiter' happily offered this my son. For the price, i wasn't expecting a big plate of food, especially with the kids being free - but i was pleasantly surprised when the food arrived. Three large pieces of beef, with a handful of roast potatoes covered in nice thick gravy, with a big side of veg - the quality and quantity where both great. My daughters pasta dish was also a decent size, considering it was a kids dish (and free) - my son also enjoyed his chicken chips and veg (and some of my beef i had that much). Overall for the food we received, for the price, i think it was great. The 'waiter' had a little chat with my kids to make them feel welcome, asking them which one was paying haha (if only). We asked for some additional roast potatoes and gravy, and they happily brought them out for us, with no extra charge. For two adult roast dinners, and two children's meals, a large coke, lemonade, cordial and a fruit shoot came to no more than £24 - very reasonable i personally think. We didn't stay for dessert, so can't comment on this (too full up).The place had people / other families in, but wasn't overly busy, but i suspect it can get busy, especially on a friday/saturday and late sunday afternoon - as do most places like this.All in all, i will definitely return again to try something else on the menu.

We visited on fri 16th aug as a birthday treat for my daughter.All 3 meals were superb, starters and mains excellent. Patrick served us and made us feel very welcome,certainly visiting again and recommend it.....

We eat here regularly as the food is good but always the manager is surly and the staff have no manners no please or thank you our recent visit was worse than usual and so we will be going to cherry tree to get a better service shame as we like the food

Not the first time we’ve been here never had a bad meal great food, great prices, great service choose from mid-week or evening menu or Sunday roast had them all everyone delicious from the first bite to last.

We booked here for our 2nd wedding anniversary, we wanted to try somewhere new, what a mistake this was!We rang up and booked a table for 6:30pm, we walked into the place behind a couple who hadn't booked a table but the waiter (who I think might have been the owner/manager) took them straight to a table and we had to wait half an hour for a table. Eventually we were took to our table, we ordered our meal within 15 minutes (which was a long time to wait after already waiting for half an hour for a table). 45 minutes passed and our starter still hadn't arrived, meanwhile other tables around us that were seated after us got served their food and had finished while there was still no sign of ours. We questioned the manager about the whereabouts of our food, no reply came but he got on his phone (I'm guessing he was ringing the kitchen) he then proceeded to clean and set the table next to us without explaining where our food was.By this point we had had enough of waiting and went to the bar to tell them to cancel our order as we were leaving, all the manager could do was shake his head.After leaving there we decided to go up the road to The Cherry Tree which was absolutely perfect, we walked in and were seated, our ordered had been taken and our food arrived within half an hour , the food was amazing.My recommendation would be to avoid The Rivington and visit The Cherry Tree instead.

We went for lunch with some friends and had a lovely meal which we all enjoyed tremendously . The food was excellent as usual , I had a battered fish burger for the first time and it was delicious . The service is great and the staff are all very friendly so we keep returning and will continue to do so.

Second time I have attended this shocker .. the first time one meal came .. after complaining 10 mins later the next one came .. and after a second complaint the 15 mins later the final two meals came .. we gave them the benefit of the doubt due to it being busy and saw a lot of food being sent back ... came again today with my friend and his partner only to be left with no food again for 15 mins while they eat .. after 15 mins pulled someone aside to say cancel my food as they had finished and didn’t fancy eating alone .. the manager came back with a shocking re written order .. stating that they thought their two chicken burgers where starters .. and my burger and the garlic bread to share where the mains .. won’t be attending this shocker again.. no apology no nothing .. average food and rude staff wouldn’t recommended ..

Went here 29 June. Was very disappointed with service and food. When food came it was like rubber it had been seriously overcooked. We ordered wine and they brought the wrong (cheaper) one and still tried to charge at the higher cost.This is shame as we've been here a view times before and enjoyed what we've had.

Been here quite a few times. Every time we have always had a warm welcome, the food is always first class - the best by far of any other restaurant around and excellent service. The restaurant has always got a lot of diners in so it is always best to book. You will not be disappointed when going here. We have never been disappointed. Keep up the good service and the good food.

Some friends and I visited The Rivington a couple of weeks ago and had a very satisfactory meal. The place probably purports to be a slightly finer establishment than it really is, but it makes for a pleasant ambiance and is complemented by the friendly service. I've eaten enough ready meals in my time to know that when food comes at such a lava-like temperature, it's had more than a brief rendezvous with a microwave. The vast range of options on the menu would also seem to suggest that not a lot of from-scratch cooking goes on in The Rivington kitchen. If I'm honest though, I couldn't give a toss. I got 3 courses for £13.99 and everything I ate was perfectly tasty. I would echo the quibble raised in a couple of other comments on this page, however. That being a slight discontent at the way the waiters and waitresses sometimes pass hot plates into customers' hands, rather than placing them on the table themselves. I don't mean that as a complaint against the waiting staff though; they were polite and attentive from the get-go, and made sure that our dining experience was a happy one.

The food is absolutely disgraceful and so is the lady on the bar who refused to give me her name and would lying on the phone about the chef not been in at 12.30 in the afternoon at lunch time I had chicken in a wite wine sauce with looked like it had been spat out and covered with a sauce the potatoes were rolling around the plate it looked like a 5 year olds dinner I tried to eat it but then could not eat the rest I finished with a terimisue and ordered a glass of wite wine the glass was filthy and had to get again ask for a clean one I’ve had an upset stomach since Tuesday and it’s now Friday and all the lady on the desk cause say was am I sure it wasn’t somthing I ate at home I’ve never been there I’m new to the area and will not be back I’m now of work because I’m sick due to there poor food hygiene level I seriously would not recommend this place awful

Our first visit here but it won't be the last. Service was swift. The food arrived piping hot and the portions were generous.The minute steak served with a sauce was delicious. The chicken pie served with a puff pastry top was really good too. We only had starters and mains but we were full. The restaurant was busy on Tuesday lunch time so I'm sure you will need to book at weekends.

Went for Drink and a meal with friends before going to Rod Stewart concert, Really enjoyed the place. Good choice of beer and food was good, although one of our meals, a mixed grill came and the steak was slightly less cooked than asked for and a bit fatty. But all in all it was good, with very good service and price was reasonable as well. Very nice experience and although not nearby for us would definitely go again Thank you.

I don't normally write reviews but on this occasion i will. We were met on arrival by smiling faces and shown to our table that had been set up with balloons we had provided the day before for my sons 18th Birthday. The service was excellent and felt personal nothing was too much trouble and in fact very easy and relaxing. The food was great and we had a very enjoyable evening. Thank you to all the staff for we will definitely return and recommend.

Myself and two friends went for lunch on Wednesday 29th May to celebrate a birthday.The service was good and quick. Food was excellent and good choice for a lunch menu. I had black pudding and friends had garlic mushrooms which there was plenty. For mains I had chicken and leek pie with vegetables and potato wedges. Friends had the fish pie, unfortunately we couldn't manage a dessert (maybe next time).

Visited with family. Waited over an hour for food. Nobody asked if everything was ok. Wasn’t asked for drinks or dessert order and then took half hour for plates to be cleared. Ended up going to bar to pay and explained we hadn’t had desserts as slow service and said we were disappointed. No apology. Regular customers here but won’t be returning in a rush!

Extremely poor service, waited an hour for our main course, not one person came to apologise for the delay, once the table was cleared we were not asked if we would like to see the desserts menu or order any other drinks. We complained to the manger that we were unhappy with the service we received, but he didn’t seem too interested and was far too busy to address the problem. Over priced average food, would never go again.

we went on a whim and didnt book, got seated quickly which was the only thing that was quick about the visit. we waited an age for our drinks order to be taken eventually my husband went to the bar we waited and waited for our food order to be taken then waited for our meals, we finished our meals got sick of waiting to pay so i went to the bar to pay only to be ignored several times by members of staff finally paid, the whole visit was a painfully slow experience only to be topped of with mild sickness later that day , think i will give it a miss for a while

Stopped for lunch a number of people were there , the decor was in need of fresh paint & wallpaper, we started with main course mine chicken & ham pie chips 3 veg plenty of it very hot very good also ham pine apple fried egg & salad which was also very hot & plenty of it the only thing was it had like a oily finish to it which was a shame abit off putting . Finished off with sticky toffee pudding which again generous portion & to die for best I’ve had for some time ,the portions are to big for lunchtime & to pricey,next time we’ll go in the evening & try there steak

We popped in on a Sunday dinner time. About 6:30pm! Didn’t expect a table. But we did. Very surprised by the food it was lovely. Staff need abit of training on how to smile and be friendly. It’s seems that the Italian boss is constantly breathing down their necks!!! Let them be themselves and chat to customers. I’m GF but food was promised it would be & it was. Will visit again x

Lovely weather outside, decided to sit outside with partner and little one, partner got 2 drinks put them down on the table and one of the drinks was blown away straight away, was made to pay for a drink again! Staff very rude about it all, not family friendly, asked for the manager, told her which she was not bothered about at all, just smiled ? and this isn’t the first time we thought staff where rude. Haven’t mentioned anything before because I thought it was because they where busy and stressed but this time it wasn’t! Didn’t bothering ordering food, disgusting won’t be coming back!

I bookwd a table for my family to have a meal we were put in a room with a large party of ladies. They were noisy so we had to shout to each other to be heard. We had our starters and had to wait over an hour for our main meal. Which we had to ask two waiter's for as we were ready to up and leave if it had not arrived. One waiter dropped a small pan of sauce whilst passing it over the table. He caught my one year old grand daughter then said ###t . Not sorry. Once we had all eaten which didn't take long as we were so hungry. We paid the bill and left. It was a relief to get away from the noise. No refund was offered for the inconvenience. We will not be giving you our custom again.

Came with my family a while ago and will be returning. I had the seabass and sticky toffee pudding - both were delicious!!! Great food all round.

I came after an overtime shift at work for a pint because it was sunny but I was hungry so I got the mid week deal 2 courses for £12 separately would be around £20. I do come ere often for a drink after work eaten now 4 times so I think it's fair to leave a review. each time it has been lovely, any meal or starter that some with salad lovely and crisp. My food today was great piping hot when it came which is fantastic. Really tasty. In the past I've had pizza I 100% reccomend. And I've had lamb chops which were nice and duck with orange sauce that was the best thing I've had. Today I had filo wrapped prawns bloody gorgeous then southern fried chicken with fries again really really good. I'll be back time and time again

Great Menu variety, was disappointed with the seafood pizza, very poor pizza base, nothing really special, 2nd night had their set menu great prawn cocktail and chicken caesar salad, the tiramisu was average, advise you to add less sugar, use cocoa powder and a slightly stronger coffee and don't serve it with cream.
