Riverview Bakery Blackhall Mill in Gateshead

Lots of choices of cake, pastries , pasties , sausage rolls, breakfast options , tea, coffee , hot and cold food. I remember the day this place opened. The only down side is that the place is not really disability friendly, it is very loud, crowded which can be overwhelming. May I suggest doing some quiet time for those who struggle with this. I'm sure you will still get frequent business!

Sunday morning, 3 generations of family, elderly mother, myself and my son, myself and son are in the hospitality business, breakfast menu broad choice and inexpensive, inside the dining room looked individual and chic, being March the yard terrace was not in use but I could imagine is nice on a sunny day, the carpark was easy to navigate and needed as my mother can’t walk far unaided. No beans was asked for on the breakfast but an additional egg was offered, waitress was very friendly and well trained, the service was excellent the food was good, the coffee was good but not perfect. Fully recommend this place but I would imagine it does get very busy, there was probably too many staff working but clearly there was a lot of friendliness between them.

Call here on the recommendation of a friend who lives nearby and I have to say, the food was pretty good. The visit was, however, completely destroyed but the attitude of a member of staff, who we have now found out as being the owner! I have never seen such a diabolical display of unprofessional conduct, a stinking attitude and an unwelcoming expression in all my days. Good god woman, try getting out of the other side of the bed!

We had the biggest best breakfast ever. Super fantastic place which serves amazing food and the best cakes we've ever tasted. Their pies are legendary and the bread is delicious. There's usually a queue and they don't allow booking although there is always a place to sit while you wait. And it's worth the wait

Not disability friendly at all. I used to visit this establishment often with my friends but i have now stopped. I called up to ask if they could possibly reserve a table, even though they usually do walk in only. I did this as I explained to them for my mam as she was fighting uterine cancer and couldn’t stand to wait for a table. The women who picked up the phone was lovely but when she went to ask the owner if it was possible the owner was so incredibly rude. It was no problem that they couldn’t reserve a table we could go elsewhere but the way it was dealt with was awful. The way she talked to me on the phone and the way she treat her staff when she didn’t think I could hear her. Wouldn’t recommend due to this reason. Really upsetting as the food, drinks and staff usually are quite nice.

Called in for our breakfast today. Great selection on the menu, all very reasonably priced too. We had breakfast baps - six sausages in one bap and 2 fried eggs in the other bap for £5 is outstanding. Love the idea of having my latte in a mug too is a great idea. The atmosphere in this place is outstanding, all of the staff are cheerful and friendly. The cakes, pastries and breads selection is also phenomenal. To be honest, in my opinion, this is the best eatery in the area. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Fantastic and definitely worth the wait for a visit. Food is really good but it's the whole package that sets this place apart. Do Not be put off if you have to wait, believe me its worth it. Overall Fantastic experience

Bought two cakes to takeaway New York Cheesecake and a chocolate eclair. They both were definitely not fresh. The cheese cake base was about an inch thick and really dry and the eclair was days old and inedible. At £7.50 I certainly won’t be returning. Both ended up in the bin.

….but it was worth it. A brilliant little shop and worth the wait. My daughter in law had heard of this bakery so fitted a visit to Costco with the bakery. Breads, cakes, pastries and pies. Staff were polite and pleasant and understanding as we found it hard to decide as the display was brilliant. We bought cookies, pies, peach Melba, Russian cake, coffee and Walnut and brownies between us. Gorgeous and worth a long drive for us from South of the Tyne.

Two friends and I arrived at 1230hrs. We stood near the main door and waited until a table was available. Two minutes and we were taken inside to a table. It took several minutes before we discovered the ordering procedure. On a large board we saw special menus which included four choices of Sunday lunch on any day. We decided what we wanted for a drink and a meal. One person volunteered to go to the main desk near the large cake stall. Drinks and lunch meals were ordered and paid for. The volunteer carried the drinks to our table. After a reasonable wait the warm lunch dishes were brought to our table. I ordered a gammon Sunday lunch with raost and boiled potatoes and vegetables. A large bowl of extra vegetables also arrived. The small slices of gammon formed a heap 10cm diameter and 2.5 cm high. I rarely leave any food on my plate but I had difficulty eating the heap of food. It was delicious. When I saw the huge ice creams delivered to children I realsed I could not deal with a dessert. You cannot book a table so be prepared to stand outside the main door. Waiters frequently check if a table is available and if so invite you inside. I noticed empty tables were soon sprayed and cleaned. The two toilet are unisex. You can also use an outdoor table if you wish.

Absolutely love this bakery. The choice of cakes, bread, and pastries is second to none in the local area. Staff always polite, friendly and hygienic with their food handling.

Absolutely fantastic food from here, can honestly say never had anything I've disliked from here, whether its been a sit in meal with family or buying pies, pasties for my packed lunch. Large choice of meals to either sit in or takeaway, artisan breads,pies,cream cakes,ice cream, jams etc

A friend that lives near recommended this cafe /bakery and we were definitely not disappointed the weather was great so we could sit outside the menu was great the home-baked pastry looked sooooo good and prices are brilliant

Came for the 1st time today there was four of us we were told we had to wait maybe 15-20 mins which was ok. I had steak onion baguette with salad & chips it was delightful now I am very critical of eating out but that was very enjoyable experience, the service was brilliant the staff left you alone even the pot of tea was enough for 5 cups. The staff were so friendly I have had take out before but never been deff worthwhile going I shall be going back as soon as I can. On the plus side now I don't need to cook tonight as I am so full 🙂

This is our favourite place for our treat of the month, food is always hot, tasty and the ultimate breakfast lasts us for the whole day. We've been going for years and have never had a reason to complain. This bakery supports young people by giving them jobs so they gain valuable experience and they also help the local community. Ignore some of the petty reviews as some people can never be pleased

Busy lunchtime but still managed to grab a table in the courtyard. Ordered our lunch at the counter and didn’t have to wait too long for our food. Friendly staff member brought out our food and drinks, hospitality checks done and left us to enjoy our lunch. Never felt we were rushed to finish our meals, even though the place was so busy. Will definitely come back for more.

Heard about this little place so decided to give it a go! Was that good we can’t stay away! The food was delicious and as for the cakes etc….WOW, so much choice, the items are absolutely huge, and they are reasonably priced too! I really hope this place stays this way as its perfect just the way it is!👍

Popped in for breakfast this morning, staff were warm and welcoming. Lots of choice on the menu. My husband had the ultimate breakfast with fried bread and said it was the best he’s ever had! Great choice for non meat eaters, which is a definite plus for me. Very friendly place with lots of choice for eating in or take away. Would definitely recommend. We will be back soon!

I ordered a cake for my wife,s 60th birthday at the weekend, when I picked it up I couldn't believe the size of it, it was 13 inches across and 7 inches deep. It was big in size and even bigger in taste absolutely mouth watering. Many thanks to all the staff. I can also vouch for their scones and steak pie's and mince pie's . Highly recommended. After a not so great first visit, we tried it again hoping it would be better, but unfortunately it wasn't. The new layout/ordering situation doesn't work very well. We couldn't see the counter to choose what we wanted but felt like we were holding the whole queue up by not deciding, and we couldn't get close to the counter to see what we wanted because so many people were standing waiting for their orders. Didnt seem like the staff were overly happy about this. The worst thing for us is that the cakes were literally so stale, my boyfriends was described to me as ''rock solid'' as if it has been sat there all day. so disappointing :( However the sausage rolls are the best weve had, but too much of a drive just for a nice sausage roll.

Visited today whilst on a family walk , we are a family with exceptional circumstances and therefore by law can be a larger group ( the reasons are sensitive and do not need to be explained for this review) there were 8 of us , we ordered 8 hot chocolates only to receive a telling off in front of other customers about how can we be allowed out in a group of 8 , the woman was extremely rude and we felt the situation would’ve deteriorated had we tried to explain our sensitive situation .I have rarely witnessed such rudeness and total disregard for customer care there was no social distancing in cafe and the woman was not wearing a mask although working shoulder to shoulder with another employee , both didn’t gel or wash hands whilst handling food , if it hadn’t been for our vulnerable family members waiting outside we would have left without our order and will certainly not return .

I often call in for cake but on several occasions they have been stale, particularly early in the week. I found some of the large sliced cakes to be bland and simply split between layers of icing without any flavours. We popped in today for our 1st visit. Helpful friendly staff and plenty of choice. We bought a variety of sweet and savory, all which were delicious. We were enjoying our coffees and pie in car when our car battery died. The very helpful staff member had finished his shift and before heading home he went out of his way to help us get the car started again. Which we really appreciated since we had a half hour drive to get home. Will definitely be back and recommend rhe bakery to friends and family

I’ve visited Riverview since it opened. Rachael & her staff are the friendliest and most helpful anyone could ask for. Nothing is too much trouble for them The work they’ve put in, particularly over this awful COVID year is nothing short of miraculous. The Government Rules are strictly adhered to and the owner has gone out of her way to help the local community. They make their own bread but during lockdown when flour was short Riverview made sure everyone could purchase flour. Fruit and veg were also available to purchase. People travelled from outlying areas to buy their flour. During this recent lockdown I’m amazed at how generous Rachael has been towards her customers by offering free fruit and veg, purchased by her, straight from the market, as a thank you to her customers for continuing to shop during COVID. The Bakery produce is wonderful. I’ve just been this morning and purchased several items. I’m so lucky to have Riverview not far from my home.I’d like to say a personal thank you to Rachael and her staff for all their hard work, it really is appreciated. I look forward to visiting for lunch or coffee/cake again once the Rules allow. Keep up the good work all of you and stay safe and well

Found this place almost by accident while holidaying at a local caravan site in Hamsterley and I'm so glad we did.Really good food, very good value and very friendly people.If you want Cordon Bleu dining (and associated prices!) then find somewhere else but if you want good tasty food at good prices with staff that'll have a laugh and a joke and talk to you then come here.We'll certainly be back.

Came for breakfast on Sunday, was busy and a really windy day but we were able to sit outside. Service excellent and the staff were lovely, as well as the breakfast which was delicious and really reasonably priced. Definitely recommend.

Very nice ploughman’s platter. Generous size portion that I had to take half of it home. Very busy place with limited seating Inside due to social distancing although more tables outside. Very quick to clean and sanitise tables when customers left but I was put off by the member of staff picking food and eating it in full view of the open kitchen where customers can see. Didn’t see him washing his hands either AND he was preparing food for customers.

We stayed at the Vindomora lodges at Ebchester and was recommended this place by the owner of the lodges. We were so glad he told us about it, as we visited several times. My husband and I are not sweet toothed people but I have to say the cakes looked amazing. We did treat ourselves to a slice of the cheesecake and certainly wasn't disappointed. We had breakfast at this place a couple of times. You can have take-away but they do have seating outside, some across the road on a slightly raised grassy bank by the river. Portions are very generous so you won't leave hungry. During our stay we purchased items such as sausage rolls and pork pies as snacks for days out, and also some of the lasagne which we heated up in our self-catering lodge. It was so delicious, we returned to the bakery on the morning of our departure to purchase some more slices to take home with us and heat up for our dinner that evening. We just wished this place was a bit closer to home, although I'm not sure it would be too good for the waistline, but a definite treat if you're passing this way.

First time back since the beginning of corona and everything is as good as ever. Menu both available to sit in (socially distance tables) sit out and takeaway is home cooked and fresh. The cakes are amazing and freshly baked breads there’s plenty choices. One disappointment was that the toilet facilities have been removed. I’m at a loss as why? Unfortunately I didn’t ask why there was a sign saying they were not offering use of the toilet. I just didn’t have another coffee as I had a 1/2 hour drive home!! I was u set the impression that if you serve food and drinks you must provide toilet facilities.

I booked a table for afternoon tea for myself and my mother. We arrived, were seated and our food arrived quickly. We couldnt believe how much there was and how good it all looked. We absolutely loved everything and had quite a bit left which we were given boxes for to take home. The staff were so friendly and welcoming and really made it a lovely experience. Telephoned to ask if they did afternoon tea to take away? YES they did so I told her how many I wanted it for, following discussion I ordered 6. I asked if they deliver? gave her the address where I wanted them to be delivered to and she said she passes that way on a Tuesday to go to local Cash & Carry and she agreed to deliver them for me. As this was the day of my sister's funeral I was so grateful for her kindness shown and providing my sister's friends with a fantastic AFTERNOON TEA to celebrate my sister life.THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH .. I want this to be as clear as possible the staff are so nice and I asked the lady who served me today what her name was and it was Laura. She could not have been more friendly and helpful. However, the manager could seriously learn from her staff (not there when I visited today) so the experience was better. She would to be honest really benefit from a course in customer care. The place is popular and there has clearly been a lot of hard work carried out to get it to where it is. Blackhall Mill has clearly benefited from it opening. A message directly to the Boss smile, show staff and little respect and value your customers and you are on a goldmine. Continue as you are and you will loose peoples good will. If I do go back it will be because the staff behind the counter are trying their very best. If my rating was based on the food and staff behind the counter then they would get a well earned. 5/5

The way the owner speaks to the staff is awful, I've witnessed this on more than one occasion, I used to be a regular customer. The staff are lovely. Also doesn't honour vouchers. The staff member asked her if it was OK to use the my £20 voucher, that was purchased before lockdown. She just shook her head and said 'no'. No explanation, no apology. The member of staff apologised and advised, she said I can't use it during lockdown. Lockdown had ended - bars/restaurants and cafe's are now allowed to open and have customers seated in again. Will not be returning

To the woman upset about lack of compliance with cov 19 rules. Just a little constructive criticism... food exposed on counter surface, line in front of counter not sufficiently distancing customers and staff. No washing of hands before handling cakes and not wearing head coverings. Food with meat in boxes not chilled.There are other organisms that can cause illness!!!

Having visited this bakery many times I have seen it at its best and worst. Of course nothing is perfect, but a simple polite greeting would firstly go a long way from the staff. Yesterday I visited the bakery and greeted what looked like the manageress with a "hello" , only to get a disgruntled and rather cold more or less inaudible what sounded like a "hi". It made me feel unwelcome and as if I was interrupting, when I clearly could see I was not. I am aware that everyone can have a bad day, however what ever happened to custoner service and common courtesy? . Also, I would like mention that when at the counter choosing what I would like I cant help but feel like I am being rushed to pick what I want before I've had a chance to look. Its as if the staff are expecting you to know what you want before entering the shop.... of course this isn't always the case. I understand it does get busy, but at the same time certain staff need to learn some customer service skills and patience, especially towards elderly individuals. With regards to the produce, I do love the selection of pastries available, however the cakes and confectionary are nothing special. Most of the cakes I have tried tend to taste the same, Rainbow cake, strawberry and vanilla cake , angel cake, toffee cake and old school pudding. Occasionally I have found that some of the new additions to sweet are decent, however I have found a human hair in one of my cakes I purchased recently (strawberry Gateaux ). I am not one to complain, however I was a bit put off.
