Six of us had sandwiches of varying fillings and we shared some chips (homemade-delicious). We polished everything off and everyone was happy. Would recommend definitely.

Large and empty cold. Staff have no people skills. They weren't happy we only wanted a drink. It's a long walk to get there and not worth the bother.

Long wait for 3 terrible meals which were grossly overpriced. Pay up front not a good idea. Other people were complaining about the wait and the entrance site was unsafe with workmen repairing the decking. There were no barriers. Would never go there again.

Collapsed here after Yat Rock climb Late lunch which sneaked in just before kitchen orders closed but still good! Difficult circumstances which meant that there was no water but staff had sorted.

I was here with my friends in April 2014. Ordered beaf stroganoff – nothing special, but way to expensive... The bill with one course dinner for 3 persons + drinks (1 pint + 2 glasses red wine) come to £80.

Came here for lunch with my husband and two children. Ordered drinks from the bar, barmaid not very friendly. Had to ask for ice for my drink. Ordered burgers for adults and two meals from childrens menu, one of which was penne pasta. We were given fettuccine instead. This may sound like an unreasonable complaint but we ordered penne because our one year old is keen on feeding himself at the moment and would have been able to do so. If it had been explained to us that the meal served was going to be different to the one we had ordered, we could have changed it. We were given the option of changing after it had been brought to the table but by then it was too late as it would have taken too long. The chicken goujons were pretty ropey too. However, the burgers were superb. Despite the big sign outside advertising a free child's meal with two paying adults, we were charged for all four. Service not great. Would we go back? Absolutely not. Probably ok for a sandwich if you don't mind poor service but don't go if you want a decent meal.

I came here with my wife and family for a Sunday roast, last weekend. The roast lamb I had was excellent, but the food took almost an hour to get to us and pudding almost half an hour. I was a little disappointed with it, as all of us enjoyed our roast and puddings but the service really let them down. There didn't seem to be more than 20 people in the restaurant and there were no apologies for the time it took. I really hope this was a one off and the service does not let the good food coming from the kitchen in the future.

Went here yesterday (29/8/11) based on reviews from Trip Advisor. The main attraction was it was very friendly towards dogs, as we wanted to take the dog with us as we did not want to leave him at home for a long time .We found the pub quite easily thanks to our Sat Nav. Access to the restaurant could be quite difficult as the only road to it was very narrow. The car park is small and quite difficult to negotiate, especially if you are driving a larger vehicle.Staff were very friendly and there was a nice atmosphere in the pub. We ordered the steak (sirloin) to be told that it was off so we went for the Rump which was a little more expensive but based on the reviews we thought it would be worth it. We ordered 3 steaks and a fish and chips as well as drinks. Although the steak was edible it was certainly not worth the £20.95 each in my opinion and I have eaten better steaks in a lot cheaper establishments, so overall very dissapointed.

What a transformation! I had not been to the Royal Lodge for several years and at that time I must say it was somewhat run down. The new owners have worked wonders. It is light and airy with light wood furniture and fittings and extremely welcoming. We had a drink at the smart new bar and then sat down and studied the menu. It was full of delights. We opted for the a la carte menu but two of us shared starters and puddings. (There was the option to have a table d'hote menu @ £25 for 2 courses or £28.50 for 3). Our starter was imaginative and delicious - little scallops with black pudding, a salsa and fresh coriander leaves. We both chose lamb for our main course which was tender and tasty. The waiter proudly told us that the chef had reared it, so no wonder it was good. We were quite full at that stage so opted for local icecreams for dessert - lots of choice of flavours and, as expected, very tasty. The meal was completed by a cafetiere of coffee, good and strong as we had actually asked for double espresso, which is a shame they don't have. The service was excellent, just the right amount of time between courses, helpful and pleasant. All in all, a good experience and I shall add it to my list of local restaurants that I both go to myself and recommend to others.

Service excellent , food hot and O.K. Car park very dangerous with large holes, Marstons need to repair urgently before someone falls and claims compensation.

We stayed here overnight and booked the restaurant for our evening meal. Lovely staff, in a lovely surrounding. It’s a shame it was dark so we couldn’t see the views. Nice selection of starters, mains and desserts and we managed to enjoy all three. In the morning, the breakfast menu was plentiful and the sausage and bacon from a local butcher were very tasty.

England's Gate is a traditional British Pub and should be proud that it lives up such expectations. The food and the service was excellent. My wife had a steak which was very good. I had the steak and ale pie which was exceptional (especially for those who wish to have some comfort food occasionally . Pity more is not made of the 'pie of the day' as it was obviously hand crafted and had a very generous filling of tender and tasty steak. I was a little unsure of what I would get when ordering as the description and lead me to believe it might be 'brought in'. Top marks when it arrived and looked and tasted great. This (and perhaps other great items on the menu) should be heralded as a special dish (as it clearly was) . Overall, we wouldn't hesitate to go back and sample the food and atmosphere again. Super place, well above average food.
