I went to the Riverside Café-Bar with some friends for some coffee. There was both indoor and outdoor seating available with a nice view of the river. We were served very quickly and our drinks were brought out straight to our table which was really nice. The staff all seemed friendly and the price was reasonable for coffee in York, I would definitely come here again when it's a bit sunnier to enjoy the outdoor area even more.

Friendly service, lovely fresh tea, and clean toilets

Expensive for what it was and very slow in the kitchen. We waited an hour for a salad which was average at best.

The view and outdoor terrace are worth coming here even if not watching a movie

Coffee was unreasonably hot and low quality

I’ve loved this place for many years. Super lovely views through the all glass facade across the river :) comfy couches and a moderate selection of ok food. Good place to chill and work or read for hours on end. This has got to be the nicest cafe in York. I’ve spent many hours of my life there, reading, meeting friends, eating, having a drink before a movie… if you’re not into pitcher and piano or vodka revs vibes, this place is for you. It has a magic veil over it like Hogwarts.

Visited here for brunch on Sunday. Hadn't been here for quite some time, but would highly recommend. The views along the river from the Terrace are quite something. Friendly and helpful service, and the food was extremely good too. Chose the granola with Greek yoghurt that was extremely tasty, and it also included a few pumpkin seeds, blueberries, raspberries and mint leaves that heightened the taste.

Pre match breakfast spot on. Magic seat overlooking the river and the ground. Prompt service, perfectly cooked and friendly.

Appalling. Customer service non-existent. Food terrible - salade Nicoise with no tuna, egg, beans or anchovies - 90% potato. Not cheap and definitely not worth it.

Away fan visiting Hillsborough for match on Sat 26th Feb 2022. Found this place by accident. Clean, staff very friendly and efficient despite being very busy. Had the home made pie of the day (meat and potato) with homemade chips, peas, and gravy - absolutely excellent and great value. Nice friendly atmosphere and enjoyed a chat with some home fans. Service excellent at such a busy time just over 1hour before kickoff. Will definitely visit again.

The Riverside cafe. 17.08.21 Where - Hillsborough next to park and football ground and opposite a school. When - 1pm 17.08.21 Who - Isaac and Tom What - Chicken Caesar salad and fresh orange juice with beetroot and coleslaw £8.70 Staff gave a warm welcome and were very friendly and helpful Service was quick, large portions. Great environment to eat in - radio was playing ( B52's loveshack) good music. Terrace/ Decking out the back over looking the river and football stadium. Great accessible toilets with enough room to turn my chair around inside.

First breakfast here since the cafe reopened. Lovely as ever (vegetarian breakfast). Good to have the cafe back open again.

We popped in for a drink as we really liked the terrace, very friendly and helpful staff, a really good bottle of picpoul at a good price, lovely relaxing time.

Having a 10 mile walk in our glorious countryside we popped in this great cafe, excellent service, friendly, welcoming and excellent food and a great drink of coffee or tea.

Ok so I go a week later for the beautiful vegetarian breakfast that I had, today was a match day so granted it was busy, I was prepared to wait, I asked for no tomato to be added to my breakfast the lady behind the counter said no !! So I mentioned I’m not asking for anything different I just don’t want something adding, she explained No So I asked again, she was then abruptly said Chef says no I simply took my business elsewhere Very rude

Lovely upstairs bar area to hold a party.Helpful bar staff and good buffet.Unfortunately we were over charged,we mentioned this at the end of the evening when it came to paying but the lady I paid wasn`t the person who took the booking.I phoned the gentleman I booked with and left a message explaining I had been overcharged but that`s a month ago and I have`nt heard anything back?

Came here with friends as we’ve just moved to the area. Sat outside which is a nice area, inside was just constant shouting of meals and numbers. We ordered which took forever as they make drinks at the same time. A young blonde girl was doing her best and seemed very polite and then assuming the owner? Lady with brown hair came over to ‘assist’ who seemed very blunt and rude to staff and uninterested to customers. This ruined the experience for us and we felt very unwelcome. The coffee was overpriced for a warm cappuccino. The food arrived and was okay, nothing special and no better than a whetherspoons breakfast. Toast was smothered in butter- a bit much for me. Our friend had a tea cake who said it had so much butter that it was soggy. I would like to support local places but I don’t think I would bother returning here and sadly due mostly to the staff and atmosphere caused.

Their sign says ‘We don’t do fast food. We do good food as fast as we can.’ In reality, they do very average food very slowly. Very stingy with the sausages in my bap. And what kind of a cafe doesn’t have mustard!?

I've been to the cafe a couple of times before with it being so close to home. The first visit wasn't great, the second (hungover) visit was great (excellent sausage sandwich). However, I felt compelled to write a review after today's visit. We went in and ordered Eggs Florentine for myself, and jacket with cheese for my partner, with two cans of pop. We were given two glasses. We went to sit outside (which is a lovely seating area by the way, despite over-looking Hillsborough stadium). We then noticed that the glasses were no only dirty, but had some kind of scum all up the inside of both glasses. The waiter (who I think cooked the food) then brought out both meals and asked who had ordered the eggs florentine. When I said myself, he said 'here you go... bit a girly meal isn't it?'. I gave a polite laugh but couldn't quite register what he'd said! Very odd. The toast with my meal was warm bread, and the jacket potato wasn't fully cooked. Not a great experience and probably not somewhere we're going to go again.

We really liked the food at this place- I thought the brioche for my eggs benedict was an unusual touch, but worth trying. Price was very fair for the quality. The thing that let it down is that one of the staff members looked absolutely miserable. Maybe she was unwell (if she was, hope she's OK!) or didn't want to be there that day- she wasn't actively rude, just looked incredibly disinterested. A lovely place like this needs a welcoming atmosphere- we hope we'll find it if we return.

Called in for a beer pre and post match recently. Nice terrace bar with views of the River Don and the stadium in the distance. Good range of local beers and nice punters. The Leppings Lane Super Tram stop is 2 minutes away so great place to let the traffic get away post match.

Lovely surroundings....not cramped as per previous review... Reasonably priced, good coffee, gorgeous breakfast and proper doorstep toast and butter. 8 of us turned up and every breakfast was delicious. Highly recommend.

In trying to maximise its revenue, the place comes across as very cramped, with tables virtually touching each other, no room to move, no space to get out when finished. Staff come across as indifferent.

Visiting from Australia we always have at least one breakfast at the Riverside. Full English like nowhere else with tea & toast sets you up for whatever the British weather can throw at you.

My wife and I have visited this cafe on a few occasions and have never been disappointed! We always have the breakfast which is always good and always enjoyed it. Also has a good choice of cakes and buns!

Took my wife for our wedding anniversary meal and was very impressed. All three courses were superb. The place is beautifully decorated and has a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. As if all that was not enough, there is the added bonus of a range of real ales. In summary, the price is slightly above average but the quality of the food is way above average. I would have no hesitation in recommending this place to family and friends

This cafe was bright and cheery, tastefully decorated and had an extensive choice on the menu. I had eggs benedict and decaf cappuccino. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Prices were great and I will be making it my regular eating place

Cinco miembros de la familia fuimos para un té especial. Primero de todo cuando preguntamos por el pastel para el día cuando elija nuestro té , nos dijeron que era carne. Esto resultó ser pollo y hongos. Entonces nos preguntamos cuál era la sopa y me dijo que era pollo y hongos que resultó ser tomate. Me dijo "pero sólo había dos", a la que la camarera sostuvo, había 5 . Comí una chuleta, 2 patatas, zanahorias y 3 3 espárragos. El costo de este era £12 en muy viejas y destartaladas alrededor. Nos teníamos que poner nuestra propia mesa. Fue horrible. Cuando mi hijo en la ley trató de quejarse discutió la camarera dijo "bien tienes comimos 95%. Un cordero escalope de 3 = 33% cuando estaba en la escuela. Yo estaba avergonzado de discutir. Me parecía que no debería haber sido como mínimo una disculpa. Ninguna disculpa y una factura por £56,25 .

I have visited the Riverside many times for breakfast and been satisfied but recently this was not the case at all and I'm afraid I won't be going again.Suffering badly from a gluten intolerance I was checking what I could eat and asked if the hash browns were fried or baked. Both the lady who served and the lady who cooked seemed to have little idea about coeliac and in particular contamination issues. A separate pan was used for my meal but unfortunately the hash browns were pale, greasy and soggy, and the rest of my food slithered on an oily plate. Everything tasted of oil. The staff tried to help and were pleasant but I won't be going again. It maybe an idea for them to brush up on food allergies so that they can cater for people who are not fortunate enough to eat the variety that others do.

Tried cafe with a view to going to Bistro one evening but really put of by sullen staff and badly cooked food. I had quiche with salad. The salad didn't come with it so when we requested it, it was served up very willted and sparse I was literally unable to cut through half of the quiche and I suspect it had bee Microwaved within an inch of its life.My friend had a toastie that came the thickness and texture of cardboard. We're put off trying the Bistro now

My wife and I had heard that the Riverside Cafe had relaunched an evening Bistro in the first floor bar, so we decided to try it out hoping for some good local food....and we were not disappointed. The food we were served was excellent and portions very generously sized. The shared grilled goats cheese with rocket, pear & walnut salad starter was beautifully done. My wife's mushroom risotto main was excellent (although it probably didn't actually need the side serving of green veg and bread). I tried the steak from the specials board which was probably one of the best steaks I have ever had, it was done to a turn, served with rocket and Parmesan side salad and chunky chips ...fab. Although quite full we did share the chocolate tart with honey comed ice cream from the desert menu, again excellent and home made.All in all a good experience and will be going back. The only small constructive criticism I would make would be the lack of wine list to match the excellent food (which I believe is being worked on) and a little more polish to the serving of the wine at the table. I really hope this venture succeeds

We have used this small family run cafe many times, as the name implies its by the side of a small river (sadly this is overlooked of the Sheffield Wednesday grounds who take no care of their side if the river) but the owners of riverside have planted the embankment down to the river where ducks swim by hoping to be fed. There is a balcony with seating and tables overlooking the river with some really lovely floral baskets and arrangements clearly a lot of thought has gone into this. There are times of the day when the cafe is full to bursting and very busy but for early morning coffees and afternoon teas its a really pretty and calm place to sit, the staff are usually friendly and if service is to be slow we have always been warned of this when ordering. I use this place regularly at the times stated.

There is seating downstairs, a bar area upstairs which is available for hire and also a separate room with built in coal fire. There is a balcony and seating overlooking the river DonThe food is slightly expensive and the service can be really slow. A person who was with my party ordered Sunday lunch and it was cold when it finally arrived. The place is generally very busy and sometimes you struggle to get a table.There is a good choice at the bar and they also serve a selection of real ales.
