We live locally and are delighted to see the Riverside Cafe re-open for the summer. The negative review below saying it is known locally as "Cafe Debris" is absolute nonsense. We don't believe it represents the view of local people and have never heard anyone calling it that. The owners who took over a year ago have worked hard all winter doing the place up and have given it a lighter look with more atmosphere; we have always found them welcoming and never found them rude. We've visited all the cafes in Totnes and although this may not be the best or cheapest (everyone has their favourites), the main thing about the cafe is its great location overlooking the river. It's a cafe for visitors as well as locals so that's what people should expect. The prices are reasonable given its location and the fact that the owners have to make their living during the summer when there are lots of visitors and boats arriving. The coffee was good and the food looks fine. You can sit inside or outside. Of course, you can also eat your own food in other places overlooking the river but if you want to go to a cafe, this is a nice place to go, and we will happily return.

Last Sunday while visiting son, daughter in law and our grandson we took a walk along the river in Totnes. Came across this wonderful friendly café. First impression were great and this was enhanced when the kind lady on the counter (not literately) said we could bring our two small dogs in along with pram and 4 hungry adults. That made us feel really welcome. Food ordered, delivered very rapidly and all good portions, well made and hot. Made a little mess on the floor due to mud on the pram and asked for dustpan and brush. Staff were happy to sort this out themselves. We return to see the family in 2/52 time and guess where I will be eating again. Thank you so much for making us feel welcome

This cafe has recently changed hands and been redecorated. It has a covered outside area, and an inside area. Coffee was great, staff were very friendly and the breakfast/brunch menu looked really great. I also like the fact that inside is dog-free as there aren't many places in Totnes that you can go that don't accept dogs inside if you are allergic or just don't want them around you. The outside area is covered, so dog-owners can still get a coffee there. Good luck to the new owners, you are doing a great job and we will be back next time we are in Totnes.

Known locally as 'Cafe Debris' because of the piles of fishing rubbish on the roof that the new owners somehow think will attract customers and not rats. Owners have clearly not worked in hospitality before and are out to make money rather than give customers decent food, coffee and an enjoyable experience. location lovely but we take a packed lunch and flask and sit on the public benches. Exactly the same view but without the rudeness and with better food.

We've lived close by for a while and finally decided to head across and try them out. I ordered three sausage rolls & some juices for the kids - they ran out of sausage rolls but this was swiftly solved with a complimentary 'upgrade' to a pasty, Food arrived in good time and each with a small salad. Delicious food, excellent/friendly/helpful service, and one of the best views of any cafe in Totnes! We'll definitely be heading back again soon.

This place is really going downhill fast - such a shame. It's lost its identity, from the ramshackle mess of signage perched on top to the mixed messages about opening hours - some evenings it looks open but isn't, some evenings it looks closed but still has a 'pizza' sign outside. From a hopeful start with a nice new menu including smoked fish and avocado dishes, to these dishes being almost immediately removed from the menu but not from the printed menu, which causes endless disappointment and confusion. Now the menu has been reduced down further to, well, not very much. Order poached eggs on toast and you get two pitiful specimens on a soggy, margarine-saturated piece of 'sourdough.' Try the 'full English breakfast' and get a greasy plate of deep-fried cheap frozen produce that leaves you with stomach ache. Buy three small scoops of ice-cream at the takeaway and spend £10 on it. The coffee isn't bad, but the service is surly, numbers being yelled outside so loudly that it's impossible to have a conversation. The pizza nights are not working either, hardly surprising as there are so many other places in Totnes where you can get one and this cafe is opposite the ever-popular Steam Packet where food is fresh and delicious and also has the riverside setting. Such a shame. Locals are avoiding this place now and trade is reliant on the influx of riverboat passengers who alight alongside. However, when summer finishes I'm not quite sure what on earth will be providing the income for this place. It could have been so much more.

Sadly am most disappointed by the lunch offered today under new management. Whilst loathe to dam a new business in its early stages of development, I felt it necessary to comment on the extremely poor service, the poor quality of food ( My Order was Number 90 today, 2 May 23) and the high prices sought for usual cafe food. There were only three members of staff which was clearly inadequate for the expected customer service and the time delay in receiving the order was unacceptable. Suggest either get more staff to meet the demands of the cafe or else close down until able to do so. The quality of service provided by the previous owners was good and it was always a pleasure to go there by the river. Ultimately I would suggest that its service now needs to improve considerably if to survive. Felt it was a waste of money and, with hindsight, I know that there is better on offer locally.

We were excited to see that this cafe has been taken over, even though we were very fond of the previous owners. Seemed time for a new menu with lots of choice on it and it's great that they are going to maybe open in the evenings and get a licence for alcohol. HOWEVER - my God, the prices. I think that this is going to prove to be a sticking point particularly with locals. Over £8 a for one-scone cream tea (it was a very nice warm, homemade scone, however) and the real shocker was £10 for three smallish scoops of ice-cream. Hot chocolate was expensive and nothing special. Tea also was fairly weak and insipid. I'm hoping that this is just teething problems as the cafe is newly-opened. It promises a lot, but at these prices, it won't be a regular stop-off for us.

The coffee was good but the panini took 20 minutes to come - not great on a lunch break. When it finally arrived it was just warm, and the cheese not at all melted and looked more like a baguette. Sadly as it took so long to arrive I didn't check it till I was back at work and was unable to return as my lunch hour was over. As it was their 2nd day of opening I am hoping this was just a blip and they get into the swing of things as it used to be a great lunch stop in the summer!

The riverside cafe at Totnes far from encouraging tourism is in fact ripping the tourists off. Not only charging for having coffee and cake from inside and charged for seating but also when having ice cream at the same time but charged again for seating to eat it. Visited whilst on the Round Robin trip. Breakfasts were nicely cooked, although a little small and not as hot as I like. The drinks were fine and it's a pretty location but have to say they are a little excessive on the Covid precautions. Had to sit outside and use a rather narrow, awkward entry corridor with a step whilst juggling a slippery tray with six drinks on, as well as giving all our details where anyone could hear. My elderly mum was virtually shouted at because she forgot to raise her mask the instant she stepped inside, and the server took the cash notes off her with tongs and then counted her change out of the till with a teaspoon before pouring in into her hand out of a plastic tray - not the easiest thing for her to manage when she's almost 80 with severely arthritic hands! Overall, a reasonable meal but felt very unwelcoming because of the obsessive level of precautions.

A wonderful location when it's warm enough to sit outside, but my scrambled egg was overpriced and overcooked - dry and tasteless.

After a lovely walk round Totnes I decided to stop here for a drink and a bite to eat with my 9 year old nephew. Having looked at the menu we both decided to have a can of coke and a plate of chips each. The chips are priced at £2.50. My 9 year old nephew asked if he could have cheesy chips and as there was a lot of cheese in various other dishes on the menu I assured him that I was sure this would not be a problem and that we would both have that. As I had 3 dogs with me I asked my nephew if he would go in and order and I gave him £10. I assumed that adding cheese to the chips would slightly increase the price of the chips. After going in he returned to me to say that he didn't have enough money; I was confused by this as I thought there is no way it could be more than £10 but as I could not go in I gave him more money and decided I would speak to the waitress when she came out. I initially thought that maybe my nephew had got confused or had ordered something extra to go with his chips. I was so sure that it must be a mistake that I assured myself that I would be able to sort it out and get some money back once I could speak to a member of staff. The waitress came out with our cheesy chips and I questioned the waitress as to why 2 plates of cheesy chips and 2 cans of coke had come to £13.10. She herself expressed surprise and said that she thought that was "expensive" and would go in and check for me. She came back out rather nervously and explained that although a plate of chips is £2.50 adding cheese to them made it into "a meal" and that meant that each plate was £4.95!!! I told her that I felt this was absolutely ridiculous however I acknowledged it was not her fault and she said she would ask the manager to come out and speak to me. The manager then came out and repeated that adding cheese to the chips made it into a meal. I asked her how she could possibly justify almost doubling the price of a plate of chips by adding a small handful of grated cheese. She said that it would be silly to have to individually price items on a plate?! She also stated that chips are really an extra to go with other things on the menu. I pointed out that on the menu, chips are clearly listed as an individual item that you can order and no where on the menu does it say "really chips are an extra to go with other things on the menu". She then said that I should have cancelled the order if I wasn't happy; she is absolutely right however as previously stated I honestly thought that there had been a mistake and that it could easily be resolved. I told her that I thought it was absolutely outrageous to charge that much for a plate of chips and throwing a handful of grated cheese on something does not make it "a meal". She said that perhaps they should stop doing things that are not on the menu if it causes problems; maybe they should but that really is something she needs to discuss with her boss rather than me. She then said that she had worked at the cafe for 16 years and never had a complaint before. Then to add insult to injury she said she was going to go back in because my "chips would get cold"!It is beyond my comprehension as to why common sense could not be exercised in this situation. To me adding grated cheese to chips is not the same as adding a sausage roll or pie to my chips however they clearly have a button on their till which is either chips or meal, there is no in between and no room to show any discretion. The view at this cafe is lovely however I can confirm that there are a plethora of benches along the river so I would advise you to buy a sandwich or pasty from a shop in town and sit on a bench and admire the view for a fraction of the price. There are also numerous cafes in town that are probably a lot more deserving of your money than this place.

Went for tea again with the kids after our first visit last week. Did not disappoint. Booked a nice table under the terrace at the back adjacent to the building where there are wall mounted infra red heaters which were very welcome when it got a bit chilly later on.Great pint of Otter and the pizzas and burgers are excellent. Good kids menu too. Try the garlic bread...wow! The staff are warm and friendly and the whole experience, in our experience on 2 occasions now on this holiday, has been exemplary. Will definitely be returning next year on our holiday....if not sooner!

Delicious cream tea, 2 huge scones and plenty of cream and jam. My daughter had a knickerbocker glory which she really enjoyed and my husband just had two scoops of ice cream. The service was a bit slow on the ice cream and the prices were a bit high, but it was worth it for the lovely setting.

The only nice thing about this place is the view. Service is offhand and the tea like water. Prices are high presumably because of the location. The only reason we didn't move on was because we didn't want to miss the open top bus which left from a stop nearby.

We have been going to Riverside for a very long time because of its location by the river .We find the staff quite friendly & I always enjoy the toasted sandwiches which are made freshly when you order , maybe you can get the same in the town for less money but the view is worth paying slightly more for your coffee & food .

Chips at £2.50 but if wanted beans as well price became £4.50 as apparently that became a meal - needless to say we asked for our money back and settled to drink the coffee we had purchased - which tasted worse than dishwater at £2 a mug so we left and vowed never to return

Such an idealistic setting for a meal, sat under an umbrella in the summer sun, beside the constantly changing river Dart, looking towards the bridge and Vire Island. We always visit here for a meal or snack to watch the boat traffic, including the Dartmouth Ferry, especially the Kingswear Castle paddle steamer when the tide allows her to navigate this far. On a hot sunny day it is hard to imagine anywhere better to stop for refreshments.

We had jacket potatoes and cheese. The worst we have ever had no butter was provided and very limited amount of cheese. After a few mouthfulls we were left with just potato and wilted salad. Never again, there are so many other places in totnes that offer value for money and great location.

Fantastic location on a warm day, right on the river Dart. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, beware of the Herring Gulls, they will try to steal your food. Service poor, wooden/production line, no customer service, and no offer to bring food to table, despite waitresses around. Poor value cream ttea, thin scones, nominal amount of cream and jam, luke warm coffee, and at £5.75, one of the dearest around. Certainly won't hurry back.

We enjoyed a delicious Devon cream tea -- lashings of clotted cream and jam washed down with a lovely cuppa. Situated on the riverside, it is a lovely spot but be warned -- the gulls are also tempted by the scones! And they can be quite persistent. You may also be interested to take advantage of the community vegetable and herb raised gardens near the road in front of the restaurant -- plenty of edible flowers and veggies to be enjoyed!

My beautiful wife and I came to visit the Riverside a couple of nights after our wedding. The staff were so genuine and friendly we were so pleased with the service. The fillet steak was cooked perfectly and the Sea Bass was amazing. So very pleased with the food and service that we can't wait to go back again some day. They even serve tasty local Sharpham wine. Highly recommended.

This cafe is in a great location on the quayside in sunny Totnes. Visiting on a busy Saturday morning I fancied a bacon and tomato sandwich with a pot of tea. No bargain at over £6, but it's what I fancied! Thankfully I was there at 11.15 because they stop serving breakfasts at 11.30 !!! The bacon as can be seen in my photos was dreadful. It had been cooked some time earlier and then just re-heated possibly in the microwave to warm it up. Instead of being freshly cooked and thus bright pink it was dark red on the edges and as tough a leather. The butter on the bread was not in my opinion butter but some kind of yellow spread. The tea wasn't much better either. No matter how much I played with the tea bag I couldn't get my tea any stronger, really really cheap catering quality tea bag that probably comes in a sack of 1000. My friend opted for two rounds of toast and marmalade. The butter type spread can be seen plus the little plastic tub of marmalade that is meant to be good for two round of toast. He only ate half and gave up.Oddly this cafe has no signage outside! I walked out this basically large shed and couldn't see any mention on a name. But I did work it out! It's on a menu! Perhaps they don't want people to know their name lol lol Will I return? Most definitely not. Overpriced, poor quality food for the tourists - trading upon their great location.

The Riverside Café is a delightfully faintly old-fashioned café by the steamer quay on the River Dart in Totnes, South Devon. We only strolled along from the town for a cup of coffee and an Eccles cake, but both were absolutely fine - not speciality coffee, but then, not speciality coffee price, and the Eccles cake was crisp and filled with fruit. There is inside seating but what is so lovely about this café is that it is right by the water's edge, so you have views across the River Dart to the Steam Packet Inn and Vire Island (not really an island, but known as such) and upstream to the old bridge which crosses the river. It is lovely to be able to simply sit here and relax and enjoy the view while enjoying a meal or, as we did, a cup of coffee and a shared cake. Pleasant staff too, which counts for a lot in my book. I don't know about inside - I didn't enquire as it wasn't necessary - but dogs are permitted at the outside tables (with their owners, of course!)

Awesome. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I arrived late evening for work over a couple of days. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful from getting me a taxi late evening at the train station to helping me get to my work venue in the morning. I had arrived past restaurant hours but the staff were more than happy to prepare food if I had wanted. I was also given a local delicacy from a local. I’m normally a poor sleeper but slept so well. Whilst the rooms at first appearance look a little dated the bed is so so comfy. The room also spotlessly clean. The question is - what’s more important to you - a great nights sleep or a sterile environment with mod cons? Sadly the first morning I didn’t have chance to sample the breakfast- I didn’t have time to wait. They have a sign saying ‘We don’t serve fast food. We serve fresh food as fast as we can”. Suffice to say I ordered my breakfast for the following morning before I went to bed so it was ready for me when I needed it. Now for the highlight DINNER. I eat a lot and this is definitely one of the best meals I had in a long time. Not the usual processed pub food. The main(stuffed chicken with root veg and dauphinois potatoes was delicious. I never order dessert but felt I had to - the main was so good. The sticky toffee pudding did not disappoint. Overall a really great stay. Thanks so much

Strange but quaint place to get to. Be prepared for a staircase, a handrail on both sides, and you'll need it to, to climb upstairs. Once upstairs, we were approached by a smiling member of staff, who said, "Sit where you like." The floor slopes, but once seated, it seems you forget. We all had Devon cream & jam scone with a cup of coffee each. Wow, the scone freshly made earlier, was warm. It just melted in your mouth. Once you got the jam & cream on, or is it cream & jam. My aunt & I had a latte & my husband & uncle had a cappuccino. Stand carefully for the loo, you may fall. There is only one unisex toilet. We paid and left. Back down the staircase again....the restaurant is above a shop, which is situated by the museum. Not for disabled people..though I made it with my walking stick. No car parking.

I booked 2 nights for friends online, i had some simple questions about parking and accessibility but couldn't get hold of anyone to answer my questions so i cancelled. I cancelled nearly 1 month before the cut off for a full 100% refund ( clearly stated in their contract when booking) . I then spent nearly 2 months calling, emailing, leaving voicemails to get my money back - they ignored every one. In the end I had to claim the money back via my bank. If my bank hadnt stepped in and help, this establishment would have stolen over £400 from me. I am writing to hopefully sway others and stop them doing the same to others
