Having visited Ben's shop a few weeks ago, I went again with my son; this time in the hope of having lunch there. We went to the café at around 12:30 and I asked if I could have a vegetarian pasty and that we would like to eat in. I was told by the lady behind the counter that this wasn't possible because the chef wasn't due to arrive for about 20 minutes. Bearing in mind that the pasties were cooked and there was a small glass oven in sight, I was somewhat confused as to why the pasty couldn't be heated up. More so, as it was lunch time, why there wasn't a chef available. Decided not to have coffee and left. Fou d a lovely café in a village a few miles away in Newton Ferrers. Won't be attempting to have lunch at Ben's Farm Shop again. Very disappointed....

really disappointed, the gluten-free roll was dry, absolutely awful. The garlic bread was not cooked properly. Very disappointed as the other week it was a lot better and it was gluten-free bread not a dried out roll.

We had a lovely visit after picking our own fruit at pips just behind Bens - as expected, farm shops are always more expensive but the produce is very good and lasts longer- we had drinks and warm pies and as there was no carrot cake the chap was very helpful in advising what was available- the service was excellent and everything was hot and tasty 😋

My husband and I stopped off for lunch and grocery shop when I realised most of the produce was local and organic. (It would be very helpful if the sign outside mentioned this so as to capitalise on the fact that it is farm to table and I think a lot more people who care about what they are eating would pay attention to this) The food was delicious and fresh - I had a chickpea / courgette salad with a broccoli quiche and my husband had a stilton / beef pasty and chips. Coffee was also excellent. I love the variety of produce on offer, from a great selection of mushrooms to organic / bio dynamic wines. I will certainly be back.

Dropped in for a coffee and snack after dog walking at kitley. Looked in the chilled cabinet and decided on a sausage roll with my coffee. After standing at thwle counter being ignored by the two people at the front, a man came from the back to ask if i wanted something. Apparently not, i could either have sausage roll with chip or with chips and salad or no sausage roll. I opted for the latter, how ridiculous, they totally would not sell me a sausage roll on its own. This farm shop is totally over priced as it is and it seems that applies to the cafe too, if you wont pay for additional options that you dont want, then they are not interested in your custom. Go somewhere else where the customer is served with coutesy and consideration

I called the cafe prior to our visit to ask if breakfast was still being served and was told it was indeed. We queued and at 11.25 were told that breakfast finishes at 11.30 and no more orders were being taken as the chef needs a break. Why advertise breakfast until 11.30 ? And why wasn't I told when I called ? As I'd specifically asked for breakfast ? Rude staff. Yes we were offered pastries and pasties. As we live on the Hoe, we could have gone to any number of cafes to eat but chose Ben's, for a change.

Arrived at 1530 for tea with a friend to be told that they were clearing up in anticipation of closing at 1700… Many tables already out of commission with chairs upended on top. Not nice! No food available, not even a scotch egg which we could clearly see in the cabinet but which we were told (somewhat shirtily) constituted ‘food’ and was thus ‘not available’. The last time we visited, there was also a ‘no food’ situation due to staff shortages. Our order of peppermint tea and earl grey tea arrived, wrongly, as 2 x pots of normal tea.. One cup dirty and had to be sent back. I’m sorry to post this, but if you’re to be an attractive destination during your opening hours, you’ll need to pay attention to details which are important to customers. The cafe just isn’t representative of the high standards you offer in the shop.

Felt hungry while we were in the shop. Came over to the cafe and were quickly served with a simple one course lunch each. One apple and pork pie with veg, chips etc and a lentil and roast veg soup. Both tasty and reasonable value. Only mini gripe, they put by two wraps of butter onto my hot bread so the melted contents ran straight though onto the plate!

Do not waste your money here for refreshment. Had a coffee and cheese scone with my friend who ordered tea and Bakewell tart. The table we sat at was not only very wobbly but dirty with spilt drink and dried food. Had to ask for it to be cleaned and no spray used just a damp cloth. The sugar container on the table was empty and had to ask twice for it to be refilled. The coffee was brought to me in a chipped cup and when pointed out I was just given an apology and no offer of change of cup. Food and drinks were very average. As Bens farm shop sells generally top priced quality products, one would expect a similar quality cafe.

We went to Ben’s Friday night pizza event. Our pizza’s and garlic bread were sublime, made from their own farm shop ingredients. Absolutely delicious. Their chef definitely knows how to cook a proper Italian style fresh pizza. Great staff, very friendly service and they really looked after us. We spoke to the manager who told us he wanted to start doing regular Friday night pizza evenings. Which we would definitely go to. And I think would prove to be very popular with the local community. A big thank you from us…and we will defo come back. I hope other people enjoy it as much as we did.

I saw that the cafe area was renovated and there was a new menu so I arranged to go try with a friend. We were there at 11.30, which is apparently the wrong time to be. No breakfast and no lunch was available. They could put pies and pasties in a microwave for you or you could eat some of the dead stale looking salad... Or coffee/tea/cake... So we went for coffee and cake. It took over half an hour to get the said coffee and the really not so fresh cake, which possibly came from a pre-packaged lot from the store. We sat among several tables still piled up with dirty dishes of half eaten breakfasts, which apparently stopped being served an hour ago. Service staff, possibly because of being overwhelmed due to being understaffed, weren't nice at all... In fact, quite short tempered... Understandably but still, not a great experience. Then there's the slightly awkward thing of the place being 80%populated by what seems to be groups from nursing homes. Everyone has walkers, wheel chairs and hearing issues. This clientele coupled with the tight arrangement of tables means that one has to get up quite often to allow people to get through, and a very noisy environment as everyone is loud and the space echoes all sounds, amplifying the effect. Lastly, bring a warm coat if you are going to this café... It's freezing inside... And today isn't even a cold day... It's 19 degrees out... Possibly colder inside, in a weird way. So we left hungry, cold, and with a headache. I won't be back, for sure.

Cafe offers simple high quality organic foods as we expected. We ordered the vegetarian and regular breakfasts and thoroughly enjoyed them. The meats are organic and carefully selected for quality, animal welfare, etc. The smoked beans are made in Ben’s kitchen (homemade). Possibly not more expensive than other breakfast kitchens with lesser quality food. And the staff are always friendly and helpful. What’s not to like about that?

On the 28th September we arrived as a small family, we all used antibac on our hands and wore masks. This is despite there being no safety signs or limits on persons per household. Not wanting to use any bags we carried the many items we bought. We were told sternly by the check in lady to all “Stand back” followed by another member of staff saying “Stand outside you are blocking the door“. The only reason we had to stand where we were was because of a strange and poorly thought out check out system which involved the member of staff coming out from behind her safety screen to handle all our purchases. After what we thought was going to be such a pleasant experience we were throughly disappointed and felt unwelcome - the customer service was appalling!! Visited Ben’s Farm to meet family for coffee and a small snack. As it was warm we decided to sit in the outside seating area. Part of the area was full of wasps, this was due to some of the seats being located next to stacked empty crates that had held vegetables and fruit. As a result we had to move seats. The table we sat at on the gravelled area was adjacent to discarded drain pipes and wood. It felt like we were sitting in a scrap yard. The gravelled area had not been tended to and was full of weeds. At no time during our hour long stay were the tables cleared of used crockery or wiped down. It would appear that making money is more of a priority here than maintaining a clean, well-kept and welcoming environment.

Limited choice. We ordered the “Vegetable broth” for £6 which was NOT a broth but a root vegetable stew, consisting mainly of carrot and potato. It came with a decent size roll, which was lovely, but the “broth” itself came in bowls which were (I kid you not) the same size as the bowls our tapas had been served in the day before in a Tapas restaurant. We had to ask her to do it agin but the table remained sticky and she did not take away empty bottles. There were no forks to eat our cakes and when we asked the waitress she refilled the box at the cafe entrance but did not bring any to our table. Overall rather disappointing. They won my business from Otter Nurseries just down the road, a few years back but I am afraid I am returning back to Otter. The staff in the summer were much friendlier than the current ones, but my main gripe is the cost. The scones are £1.60 to takeaway and £2.25 when eating in. The lovely Deli in Kingsbridge sell theirs for 0.75p to take away, why such a difference? The big breakfast is £9.95 and to be honest we had the same size at Louis cafe at Kit Hill last week for £6.50 and it was better. The cost has gone up considerably since the major renovations a couple of years back.

I've been using this farm shop and cafe for many years. The food in the cafe isn't cheap tbh...... Had a breakfast there recently and it was a let down.... Nothing much on the plate and barely warm and just looked poor value.... The staff seem to be devoid of personality and joyless.... they rarely seem to smile or enjoy working there and they don't seem to want to service you when you go to the counter.... they seem to be busy doing other things...

Went there with my daughter to pick up something for lunch. All salads looking pretty tired, and what we eventually bought was stodgy and not very nice. A shame, used to love going there, but will avoid as the last couple of times have not been great.

This place used to be lovely, but it has unfortunately gone downhill. Frittata was tiny and tasteless, sausage sandwich served on dry bread - which is really a shame considering they used to do amazing bread. Staff were pleasant, but service was not great and the dining area was a bit grubby. Such as shame as this used to be a really lovely place to eat.

The best thing about our lunch was the very good coffee, otherwise the meal was disappointing. i had two thin-cut slices of medium rare beef on some tired lettuce with a heap of cold, unappetising lentils beside it.

Always enjoy shopping. Good quality organic products. Bread superb. However cafe was extremely poor experience. Poor quality and overpriced. However, will continue to shop there for organic products, and perhaps just indulge in coffee next time.

I’ve come to Devon on holiday and I’ve been to this shop twice in three days. Lovely pasties, tarts and pies. All show good wholesome ingredients and lots without onion. As I can’t eat onion I really appreciate this. Lots of others flavours without onion.

We always do our organic shopping here and occasionally eat in the cafe. Staff always helpful. Prices reasonable. The cafe does a big range of delicious homemade food. We especially recommend their cream teas. Yummy! Big debate is always do you put the jam or the cream on first?

Came here today with my daughter to meet friends, disappointing to see that the menu is so limited from when it used to be Riverford, I ordered the soup of the day, which was acceptable unlike the other items, I ordered my daughter her meal and although the portion size was quite good, it was so overpriced, I was also given a cup of coffee when I ordered a latte, yes they changed it, and I didn’t need to be explained to what a latte is...

Dropped in for some veg in the shop and decided to have coffee and something to eat. Had the breakfast as they were more than happy to change the fried egg for something else, which is something a lot of places refuse to do these days, so full marks for that. The food was good, the mushrooms and bacon exceptionally tasty. Quick and friendly service, so all good for us.

I love this place, since taken over from Riverford Farm, it hasn't changed much thankfully and still offers some great treats.I couldn't afford to shop here all the time but visit to get special treats like cider, pate, cheese and snacks and soft drinks including my new found fave, Luscombe Carrot and Orange (and lemon)...its brilliant and tastes way better than it sounds.

3 of us came to lunch soon after 12 today but most outside places were taken and we happily and slightly cooler took a bench inside. We all opted for pastry, a leek and potato pie, a Stilton tart, two pasties one vegetable and one spicy lentil with yellow casing. Sundry salad accessories. Very tasty and good value. Friendly staff and quick. Interested afterwards to pop into the help you along vegetable nursery at the back and bought some robust basil plants which we were assured were ready to plant out.

Visited with a work colleague for a quick and absolutely delicious coffee, made just how you like it. The food looked so tempting that we ended up with plates full of gastro marvels. For me, mustard tart and a choice of salads, everything was just so fresh and inviting. The laid back atmosphere and staff just make this a real chill out place and you can sit inside or out. We could have indulged in fabulous cakes too but were so full, we had to take one home with us.

It is a shop and a cafe'. The seating is very basic and one would not wish to sit too long on the hard chairs. Scones and tea were very good and the choice of cake etc was also great. The tea was served in a pot with nice cups. Staff nice people and were helpful when trying to choose what we wanted. Other snacks and food available but we did not need them.

Very nice place for lunch. They have proper pastys here which left me very satisfied and I was hungry. The kids really enjoyed their meals too. Nice coffee I must say too and the staff were super friendly. We will be back!

I enjoy my visits here to shop. Great salad bags at very good prices, always on my list. Parsnips have been very flavoursome. An immaculate butchery section with some delicious tasting sausages. The delicatessen offers an array of salads, savoury tarts, homemade scotch eggs which when warm and just cooked are heaven ! We often buy the vegetable pasties or steak & stilton for picnics. Reasonably priced and such good quality. Staff are always happy and friendly.

I come here regularly with my dad for lunch and I often have the hallumi burger with the three salads with my dad having the special burger with three salads. If all salads were made like this then parents would not have any problem in getting their children to enjoy their greens! They are absolutely great. The coleslaw is how coleslaw should be made, not dripping of mayo and all vinegary like so many other types you come across. Same with the potato salad, and the moroccon carrot is delicious, as is the chickpea salad. The burgers are first class too. Very friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere, with a very quick service. The mushroom soup is also one of our favourites but to be honest all the food there is first class.

We visited the Flavel for the screening of King Lear direct from London. This was superb but the cafe wasn't open when we turned up and we couldn't even get a cup of coffee during the twenty minute break as only alcoholic drinks or two soft drinks were available at the bar. It didn't spoil our evening but we needed the caffiene at the time and couldn't get it

Awesome. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I arrived late evening for work over a couple of days. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful from getting me a taxi late evening at the train station to helping me get to my work venue in the morning. I had arrived past restaurant hours but the staff were more than happy to prepare food if I had wanted. I was also given a local delicacy from a local. I’m normally a poor sleeper but slept so well. Whilst the rooms at first appearance look a little dated the bed is so so comfy. The room also spotlessly clean. The question is - what’s more important to you - a great nights sleep or a sterile environment with mod cons? Sadly the first morning I didn’t have chance to sample the breakfast- I didn’t have time to wait. They have a sign saying ‘We don’t serve fast food. We serve fresh food as fast as we can”. Suffice to say I ordered my breakfast for the following morning before I went to bed so it was ready for me when I needed it. Now for the highlight DINNER. I eat a lot and this is definitely one of the best meals I had in a long time. Not the usual processed pub food. The main(stuffed chicken with root veg and dauphinois potatoes was delicious. I never order dessert but felt I had to - the main was so good. The sticky toffee pudding did not disappoint. Overall a really great stay. Thanks so much

Staff was rude when they got our order wrong and then correct it after a bit of telling them but the was going to refuse and service that day was not good. Was over charged with a coffee and cake we didnt have as an extra 7 pounds , Other times been good. Food nice.
