We’ve always eaten in the town where there are superb restaurants as our initial experience of the River Restaurant when we first started to stay in Dartmouth was dismal. However what a pleasant surprise to find a massive change. The menu is great and the food beautifully cooked and presented. The service is friendly and efficient and the view is spectacular as always.

We were staying here for a couple of nights with friends who were over from the States. I’ve got to say we were not disappointed. We had drinks in the bar before going through into the restaurant both evenings. We were very well looked after but not over the top which I prefer. We had a 3 course meal and all food was superb. We ended up sitting chatting for a long time and even though we were asked if we wanted anything else, we were not told to leave which was great. We did say if the food wasn’t great then we would go somewhere else the second night, but of course we didn’t need too.

We booked a table here for my mother-in-law's 87th birthday. The food was lovely; the service dreadful. No one offered to take our coats, they were draped over a chair until we asked for them to be taken away, we had to ask for things like the wine list and mustard twice and, worst of all, all although they knew it was a birthday, not one person wished the birthday lady a happy birthday.... Not even when they (after being reminded) practically dumped a bit of ice cream with 'happy birthday' on the plate in chocolate, in front of her (after the other dessert had been delivered and half-eaten) ! We were astounded and a little embarrassed. After settling the bill we didn't see a single member of staff. We had to tretrieve our own coats and left - there was no one in evidence to say "goodbye" or "thank you and goodnight". We have never experienced such poor service and we eat out frequently in good restaurants.

We have dined here several times over the last few years and previously it had always been very good. This year the meal was not up to their usual standard. Although I have had no problem previously this time it seemed as if they were unable to cope with my food allergy. It may have been a lack of communication or a change of Chef but it seemed as if they were unable to produce a rather plain meal.

Have stayed at #DartMarinaHotel on a number of occasions and always eat in the River Restaurant for dinner. I can say that the food is outstanding. This is 5star with clearly talented chefs. The food is perfectly balanced and there is always a good choice between meat and fish. The sauces to accompany are rich, but these just add to the depth of flavour. The breads are all home made and vary from white with cranberry or garlic (the latter was especially delicious), to several brown options. The service is impeccable, especially Costas, the Maitre D' along with his team. Great selection of reasonably priced wines to compliment the food. A great selection of deserts to round of the meal and a tasty cheese-board went well with a glass of port. Fabulous views of the river & marina. Relaxing atmosphere but with touch if class (white table cloths). Good value at around £50 for 3 courses with drinks. Additional note: we've eaten at Brasserie Blanc recently and just doesn't compare to quality of River Restaurant.

The restaurant is very modern with a fantastic view of the estuary. The staff were welcoming and the choice of food was good The prices are high but the food justifies it. I had carpaccio of venison which was excellent as was my husband's belly pork and his main of shredded lamb and mine of stone sea bass were well presented and a blend of beautiful tastes. We would definitely recommend this restaurant - all the prices at restaurants in Dartmouth are very high but this is one at which the prices is justified. We will be returning.

I was part of the party in a previous review by Anthony D and if anything I would say he was being far too polite and didn't even mention the service we had before dinner. We had a lovely trip down the river on the "Picnic Boat" and were in no rush to have our dinner. Having had gone to the bar area for some pre dinner drinks, we were just ordering a second round and two of the eight drinks had been put on the table when we were told, by said very rude female Maitre d' that we had to come to our table. As soon as we then arrived at our table she wanted to take our order! It took some very firm discussion with her to ask her to calm down and let us enjoy our evening to put her off her forceful tone.Good food though, but let down by one very rude person

I recently ate here with 7 family members for my father in laws 65th birthday. The food was very nice as was the view. Our glasses were always full (we had to pour our own) and food served hot and fresh. Putting this to the side it is just as crucial for me to have a great service experience as it is food experience. This is where the River Resteraunt fell short.... Or off a cliff to be honest. There was a male and female maitre d'. The gentlemen was kind and very helpful. The female was rude, insulting, and very unprofessional. At one point she told us all off by explaining, with a sharp tone to her voice, that the chef cooks to order and more tables were booked in so we needed to order. We were a big ticket table and being rushed rudely was a terrible mistake on her part. If thr resteraunt overbooked that is not our problem. If she would have been polite and professional we could have avoided the next 2 hrs of her awkwardly avoiding our table. She asked the male maitre d' to serve us after that. While I enjoyed the food I will NOT return for fear of feeling a nuisance once more rather than a paying customer.

We were staying in the hotel and dined in as there was little else open on a Monday night. Very pleased we did. The two large rooms are newly refurbished in a clean and spacious style with lovely views and bags of room. The majority of diners were the age and type who put a tie on for dinner but there were a scattering of young couples too and all seemed to be enjoying themselves.Prices were reasonable for the environment and service level (which was very good) . As to the food itself, my wife didn't think much of it (hence 4 rather than 5 marks) but I thought it was pretty good for a hotel restaurant; and the rump of lamb with meat infused boulangere potatoes was delicious.

We live locally and have not eaten here since the hotel and restaurant refurbishment.Right from the start we were impressed with the welcoming and professional staff. The bar and restaurant are very comfortable with views out over the river. The clientèle were mostly hotel guests and it was nice to see many jackets and ties - definitely no ripped jeans! Not five stars for service - language barriers created small confusions over orders - worth asking them to confirm an order back to you. We were asked three different times for our room number. In their defence I have to say their English is excellent and far better than my .... well any language other than English! The tomato soup was especially tasty. I followed it with duck breast & leg - cooked just right. I rounded it off with chocolate & pestacio delice which really satisfied my sweet tooth! All the others on the table had different dishes and were equally impressed. This is not a cheap experience but we all agreed that it was well worth spending that bit extra to have a special experience. We can definitely recommend the restaurant and we will return quite soon!

Even though we have visited Dartmouth for 9 years we had never dined at The Dart Marina. This year we decided to give it a try. We had a table with a lovely view of the river and the ferry to Kingswear. We were a little disappointed that although on the menu the Pork was not available, but nevertheless, the meal was very good. I accidentally ordered the wrong main course and even though the starters were being served they were able to rectify it. The rack of lamb was excellent and cooked just as requested. We were surprised as there were 5 lamb cutlets (most unusual for Dartmouth as from experience of other restaurants there are usually only 2). No skimping on portions of accompanying vegetables either plus half a carafe of wine at a very reasonable price. All staff were attentive and knowledgeable. We would definitely dine here again just wish we had tried it sooner.

As locals we used to go to Wildfire and have not been back since this has been closed and the main restaurant revamped. The general ambiance is much improved and its a comfortable place to dine with plenty of space between the tables, bar service was swift and good and our order was taken in good time. The food was excellent with nice presentation, though a couple of the starters were slightly small, the crab for example had very little crab on the plate and should have been bigger. Main courses and deserts all good. Service from a mostly European staff was good if not a little hesitant, I am guessing a number were learning. Nothing to complain about, perhaps a little too long between courses, but just as I was about to ask, food would appear. All in all a good evening, but not quite good enough for excellent. would return.

I wondered why the River Restaurant at the Dart Marina Hotel did not feature in the better restaurants rated on Trip Advisor as the last time my wife and I ate here we had a great evening - good food and friendly and efficient service. Having now endured one of our worst evenings in a Restaurant, I know why! Firstly, and I realise that this is subjective, the menu was compiled by a chef who does not appear to know his job. Bland offerings, a lack of popular dishes and inflated prices. As a starter we had the chicken breast and noodles which was a soggy mess of noodles topped by three bite sized pieces of chicken - ugh! We both chose filleted fish for the main course and were treated to tiny portions and bones presented in a saucy mess. The cod at our local chippie is four times the size and a quarter of the price. The service started out bad and then continued downhill. When ordering our meal (and having been disappointed with the menu) I enquired as to whether there were any "specials" available only to be curtly told that everything was special. They then proceeded to get our order wrong with the result that there was a wait of over half an hour between our starter and main course and they even served the wine in the wrong glasses. When I complained about how we were treated the dreadful woman, who was presumably in charge though goodness knows why, instead of trying to defuse the situation immediately adopted a confrontational attitude which wouldn't have been out of place in a greasy spoon cafe.If you want a good meal in Dartmouth fellow Diners do not eat here. As mentioned in other reviews there are far better places to eat in Dartmouth.

Four of us ate here on a Saturday night. While we all enjoyed our food in terms of taste, presentation and ingredients, we were less than impressed with the service. On arriving at the hotel you’re left to drift through the building with no clear indication of where the restaurant is, and on finding the right place a few staff passed us by before anyone thought to welcome us and show us to our table. Whilst waiting we saw a waitress walking along absentmindedly shaking two bottles of wine. I sincerely hope she didn’t do this with the wine she later brought to our table. We were disappointed that the waiting staff were wearing t-shirts. Yes it was regatta week, but this is not suitable attire for this style of restaurant. The various staff who served us all seemed willing but generally inexperienced. We were rather rushed into giving our orders, had our water glasses topped up far too many times but were left to top up our own wine, the waitress had to rummage around her basket of bread as she couldn't find most of what she offered, wine arrived before wine glasses so was unceremoniously dumped on the table. It was all rather amateurish. The experience was not helped by having to visit a ladies toilet that was urgently in need of a clean and tidy.We ordered coffees and asked to have them in the restaurant rather than the reception area, as this was both full and draughty. The waiter went to ask permission from a senior as to whether we could do this, which should not have been questioned. On being served the coffees we were very disappointed to receive only one petit four per person – these are never normally served in the singular. Overall we were disappointed by the experience. The food was good but the service we received really lets it down. When charging the prices that this restaurant does and billing itself as 'fine dining', the whole thing should be impressive. It wasn't.

We ate in the restaurant on the first night of a 3 night stay. We both had the crab and asparagus starter which was totally bland. The menu was very limied so we followed with a fillet steak each, thinking it was a safe choice, even if it was an £8 supplement each. I asked for rare but it was overcooked and not even hot. Tacoompanying whole tomato and flat mushroom were virtually tasteless. My wife asked for medium but hers was undercooked. We decided not to chance a dessert! T wine was good, but at £46 a bottle it shoul be!Very disappointing. There are obviously some regulars here, can't think why, as some diners seemed to get far better attention than we did. There was little atmosphere as the restaurant is huge and there were only about 16 diners. We had originally booked into the Hotel for 3 nights dinner bed and breakfast. We have stayed and dined at the Dart Marina for many years in all its incarnations! We are now lucky enough to live close by and chose to have Sunday Lunch their with friends in the re-vamped restaurant. Whilst the restaurant manager was warm and welcoming, other staff were mostly cheerless. The location of the restaurant and view is lovely although the new decor is rather bland and colourless, fresh flowers on the table would have been nice. The music did nothing to add to the atmosphere as it was pop music and played through one tinny speaker in the corner. As this is a large restaurant on several levels this was wholly inadequate. However, the main complaint we had is about the food which was not good. My companions had smoked haddock fishcakes to start but sadly there was no taste of fish although they looked fab and were nicely presented. We all chose the Blackawton Lamb for our main course and for us this was overcooked and had the texture of re-heated meat, it was sliced in slabs like a gammon steak. The roast potatoes seems to be deep-fried and were very hard to eat. The veg of French beans and carrots were well cooked and colourful. Desserts were very nice except there was a huge discrepancy in the sizes served at different tables - my husband was very upset to see that the lady at the next table had a mango rice pudding twice the size of his although she clearly didn't like hers and sent it back to the kitchen! My Blackberry Mousse was served in a glass but there was no plate on which to rest the rather large spoon between mouthfuls. Cheeseboard was good with all local cheeses. All in all though disappointing and with the wines starting at £26 per bottle not a good experience.

The service here is never good, it's painstakingly SLOW. It's like pulling teeth getting a drink. They have just done re-furb on restaurant, but true to form, or lack of, they are not opening it for lunches, ever, as they can't seem to figure out how to turn over a large restaurant after breakfast. This is prime location, riverside and should be buzzing, but they can't be bothered. There is no vision from this lot, it's top down as staff all nice, but owner has no clue, all money, no vision or willingness to maximise venu or deliver to customers. Big let down for all us locals & visitors. Too expensive as you don't get any added value, service to outside tables, lunch in nice restaurant, consistency or enough well-trained staff. Shame.

We had dinner with a group of family and friends. Pre dinner welcome was very good and the meal itself was ample and tasty. The restaurant makes an effort to provide vegetarians with a variety of options - a welcome change from goat's cheese or risotto or nothing that one experiences in many restaurants. Service was excellent; prompt and attentive without being intrusive. Refreshingly, the wine waiter offered tap water as the first option for non drinkers. It's a pleasure not to have a hard sell for overpriced bottled water. The dining room is a very pleasant environment and although it was full the staff were able to maintain high quality service. The view of the river from our window table was an added bonus. The cost of the meal was very reasonable. After leaving Dartmouth I checked the bill more closely and discovered that I had been undercharged; a number of drinks had not been added to the bill. When I called to pay for the drinks I was told that the manager was grateful for my willingness to pay the shortfall but was waiving the cost of the drinks, a response that one is not likely to encounter in many restaurants.

I loved this pub. We walked from Salcombe and it was well worth it (don't worry, you can drive there too). It had the feel of a genuine pub with some good beers that happened to do great food also. I had possibly the best burger I have had in a long time and my wife had a fantastic steak sandwich. Both were freshly prepared scratch. They have vegan options too. I notice some negative reviews, mostly due to poor service. We arrived at 12 noon on a weekday in October. Even so, the place was full by the time we left, so it is clearly a popular place. The service we experienced was without fault. I hope our experience is the norm.

Great late lunch with family, biggest haddock I have ever seen. Had that locally caught ling, calamri and my wife just cheesy chips. All with crispy fresh batter, chips golden but soft inside. Even cheesy chips were top, 1/2 chips, then cheese, more chips and topping of more cheese. All top quality, even the ice cream and with nice pints of Otter, bitter & ale on tap. Great way to end off long walk on the beach. You won’t be disappointed..
