First gay pub I've been to that feels genuinely welcoming and trans- friendly. I had a non- alcoholic whiskey + coke and it was fantastic. Great range of drinks. Just outside the lock (which I went through on a busy Saturday - boaters don't go through if you don't want people to look at you haha), with loads of moorings nearby. Very friendly staff and amazing vibes. However, is not wheelchair accessible which is very disappointing as a disabled queer person.

Great cider list and selection of beers on tap. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, so the place was packed inside and out. Regardless, service was friendly and quick. We managed to snag a table and relaxed in the sun tossing a small wood shard around for a border collie at the next table over. Given the proximity to water (on canal), there were also swans. There was a particularly audacious swan that waltzed slowly on up the pavement. Some small children gave it a wide berth, however a small young doggo got a little too close and got wing fwapped a few times. The owner of the doggo watched and did nothing at first, likely unaware that the swan, if provoked just a little too much, may have pecked the poor thing's face off. Something tells me he wouldn't have enjoyed raising a blind and mutilated dog. Not everyone should own pets, eh? People really should educate themselves on the dangers of modern water foul. Read a book, people. Jeez. Maybe a celebrity could do a PSA or tribute song to swan safety or something. Is Adam Sandler still relevant?

27/10/23: Hemel Hempstead Weekend: visiting friends John & Hazel for the weekend, myself Lynette & Bryan. We'd travelled to Berkhamsted for the afternoon. The weather was cold and crisp outside but the pub was warm and welcoming. Good selection of craft ale, but I chose the Orchard Pig Reveller cider. It wasn't good and tasted off/past it's best. Other drinks were ok. Very busy inside with workers dressed in scruffy clothes, painters overalls, workwear.

All the pubs allong the towpath were busy when we visited and all looked to be providing food and drink to suit a wide range of clientele - kids, families, dogs, you name it. The canal and the narrow boats are the main attraction and we had a lovely walk around the area and a nice drink outside, watching the world go by. I recommend it!

Lovely and welcoming vintage pub, literally set on the Grand Junction Canal through Berkhamsted and a genuine manually operated lock. As soon as the weather allows it, people come out to enjoy their drinks and the scenery. More tables seem to come out from the ground and soon, the path on the canal and the little area surrounding the lock become a lively informal terrace where everyone, including pets, simply enjoy being here, watching the narrow boats and the time go by. There is a large covered terrace as well for colder days and fresh evenings while the bar area, very cosy and warm, makes you want to seat there forever. The best is to come and check by yourself!

We were looking for somewhere for lunch on Saturday and walked by the canal to try one of the pubs. Decided to go to the Rising Sun to try. It was packed with people . We ordered drinks and then realised they were not serving food as it was a cheese night. But that’s fine as I didn’t want to eat there anymore as the place looked filthy. The seats were all so old and dirty. And there were so many dogs everywhere inside the pub. One dog was so loud it was hurting my ears. Although it seems to be a popular regular pub for some, it is definitely not the place for us. We would never go back again.

Traditional pub set on the canal. Busy in summer, covered and heated outside area for the winter. Cosy corners inside with plenty of beers and spirits to choose from. There’s always several guys on duty, on Friday go for a random selection of hot snacks that are gifted to customers for free after work. The owners don’t stand for nonsense - i have seen a typical drunken incident and people are barred on the spot. Lovely spot on a sunny Sunday to nestle away in the corner. Huge regular attendance, you will get to know the same faces in no time.

Walked past a number of great pubs to get to the Rising sun, it had good reviews and was right by the canal. It was a nice looking pub and it was right by the canal. However the ham and cheese ploughmans we ordered was seriously lacking. We were warned that an apple would be missing (more cheese would be supplied). Small amount of cheese (blue cheese crumbled & dried out), 2 slices of cheap ham, four marble sized pickle onions and a small supermarket self bake baguette - it was dire for the £9+ we paid. Looked nothing like the photo shown in the gallery. If you are after food do yourself a favour and walk 20 metres up the canal to 2 other pubs that look like they serve a decent meal.

Canal side boozer with a whole lot of spirit. The pub is quaint and cosy, the outside space allows for slow summer supping. It has well stocked spirit shelves with all the guns, plus some interesting rums and whisky's. The staff were nice and the public spaces were all clean and tidy. It's very easy to describe this pub. Selling over priced poncy lagers (that no lager drinker would touch with a bargepole), doesn't stop it being a Chav Hole. Also, please keep your knuckle dragging customers away from the lock, it's there for a reason, not to entertain the intellectually challenged.

Really loved this pub. I chose to go there as it made no mystery on social media of its political allegiance and left-leaning views which in my opinion definitely are a plus in a community-minded pub - and I do like places making a stand and having some personality in these days of anodyne, cardboard cutout establishments which seem to think that homogeneous standardisation is something to aim for! The place is wonderful, sitting along the picturesque canalside where you can see boats immersed in their transient stationary lull - and the pub fits nicely with that atmosphere, almost feeling like an extension of the boatmen's bohemian lifestyle and nonchalant attitude. The staff are really nice and the moment you walk in you instantly know that this is a great spot to mingle and while time chatting and musing with them or other punters - rather the opposite of a gastro-sit-down model where interactions tend to be on the formal side and limited to your orders. There's also music played on Sundays at lunchtime. All in all, this is a magnificent social pub, which has not forgotten the meaning and purpose of the definition of "public house", so come if you're open-minded and still curious about life and others!

I visited this place on the afternoon of 23/11/24. There were three staff members on duty, all young ladies. However, only one of them, the one wearing glasses, seemed to be working hard preparing drinks, heating food, and even taking orders occasionally. Another staff member, who had facial piercings, didn’t seem to be doing much and was not cleaning the dirty tables, which were cluttered with cups and litter.
