Had breakfast at Black Goo and despite arriving when they had just opened, they were only just able to give us a table as everyone else had booked. So prebook before you climb the 4 flights of stairs to reach this cafe. The bubble and squeak was interesting as it included carrots, cauliflower as well as cabbage. But it was an excellent breakfast and the servings are big. Saturday is definitely not a day to go there for a quiet cuppa as it is very popular with families.

We visited Berkhamsted to take a look around the Home & Colonial antique and interiors store. A store over 5 levels with "Black Goo" located on the very top floor. It is a great cafe / coffee house with superb decor and ambiance. We just had afternoon coffee (lattes) and cake, but the afternoon teas looked amazing!! Our coffee's were great and the White Chocolate Biscotti blondie that I had was very good. My latte was £3 and the cake was £3.50 Service was friendly and efficient and it all made for a very enjoyable experience. Would love to visit again one day.

Had a fantastic experience at black goo this week, met some friends and their small child for a catch up during these difficult times. Considering the current times the staff and layout made it feel really safe and they were excellent with my friend’s young son. We went for the smashed avocado on toast & pancakes. Both dishes were absolutely insane. The waitresses were really good & I always judge the coffee at these types of places but i must admit it was spot on. Will be back!

I recently moved to the area and visited for a bottomless afternoon tea after being recommended by a friend. How can I find the words to describe it? I don’t need to - look at the attached picture and see for yourself! Incredible. It included a range of fresh sandwiches, homemade scotch eggs and sausage rolls, scones, brownies & cupcakes (all homemade). On top of the wonderful food, we were never left with a empty glass of Prosecco, the team were always there to top it off. At the end we were given boxes to take the remaining food home and we enjoyed it on our walk the next day. Plus the cafe is such a vibe - music, decor & atmosphere. I honestly can’t shout about black goo and their bottomless afternoon tea enough. I’ve been to a number of bottomless’ and nothing comes close. Since my first visit I have been again and received the same incredible standard of service and I’ll be back again soon! Thank you and keep up the good work

I visited last Saturday with my sister, and was extremely disappointed. We’d booked beforehand and had to join a queue on arrival, I do understand they may be busy but staff looked at us without acknowledgement for around 10 mins (when we were at the front of the queue). The waitress did not apologise for the wait and was not friendly or welcoming at all. She then asked us for our drinks order, I asked for a menu, she said it was written on the board round the corner where the queue was - out of sight. She said they have most things, my sister asked for an iced tea, the waitress said she wouldn’t recommend. Really unhelpful to not be able to view the menu.We had to ask someone to order our food. I ordered the veggie breakfast plus a sausage, it was awful! Sausage was pink and inedible, one egg was undercooked (white slime), the other overcooked. The balsamic tomato was doused in balsamic vinegar and the bubble was burnt and crispy in places. The best part was the toast! As we walked to our table I saw others waving for attention and remember thinking that seemed rude. However, I can fully understand why - the service was shocking and appallingly slow. They were way understaffed, they shouldn’t book in so many tables if they can’t handle it. And they need some training in customer service.I will not be returning and would definitely not recommend!

Was unable to reserve a table as the restaurant quite simply ignored my booking request. Reservations are done via email and common etiquette would be to notify me if the restaurant was booked for the time I had asked for - instead of ignoring it all together. It is undeniably a lot more difficult to dine during this pandemic, and the staff in charge of bookings do not make it easier by neglecting potential customers emails.

I wish there were more stars to give!! This has quickly become our absolute favourite place for Saturday morning brunch. Sasha and her team are so smiley and friendly - I wish I knew the guys name that works there too. They cannot help enough! I have a nut allergy so eating out is always risky (especially when cakes are involved) but in black goo I feel so safe! The food is home made, prepared fresh and absolutely delicious. They know the exact ingredients in every product and because it’s made fresh, it’s very easy to check and verify! Service is incredible and the staff just cannot do enough to help. We stop for brunch and just cannot leave without some amazing cakes to bring home. Great food, great location and great service.

A tad on the expensive side but the food is high quality and service is friendly. Lots of space. A nice specials board. The title of the review can apply equally to the restaurant on the top floor of the old Home and Colonial in Berkhamsted high Street as it can to the delighful Aladdin Cave on the floors below it. First the restaurant - we arrived for a quick lunch ahead of the matinee performance at the Rex Cinema. We were short on time but were welcomed and accommodated in fine style. Great staff, efficient, helpful and smiley. Lovely brunch/lunch menu, if only we had the time to sample it properly. We selected the day's special - cheese and spinach omelette. Oh the flavour!! A truly outstanding omelette and at my request, they kindly toasted some bread to accompany it. The setting is casual and has sofas as well as tables and chairs. Tea and cake in the afternoon would be perfect too. Recommended; we will be back. As for the three floors of 'treasure' - beautiful settings to purchase something old or new, antiques, furniture, knick knacks, gifts, artwork et al - absolutely splendid and well worth a visit.

Visited for afternoon tea with bottomless Prosecco. Firstly the positives were the scones and cakes were lovely, especially the brownies. Secondly most of the staff were really nice. The Savoury sausage rolls etc were nice too. Sadly the sandwiches, there was a lot of them but they only had filling at the tip of the triangle? I’d have preferred less but better quality and we felt we were mostly eating bread and butter. One of the waiters was quite poor, I asked for pickle and he said they didn’t have any but I pointed out that other people had pickle then he went away and approx 15 mins after I was given my food did the pickle arrive. He was similar when I was asking for anything, a blank look followed by him asking another staff member then eventually we would get what we’re asking for. We just often were left too long wondering if what we asked for was going to turn up.

Have been to the black goo in tring before and always had nice food, a little pricey but worth the money, so thought I'd give the Berko branch a go. I ordered the eggs Florentine and a smoothie and my friend ordered sweetcorn fitters with avocado topped with chillies and other herbs. The food came first and the eggs Florentine that I've had at the tring branch before, on the menu it specifies steamed spinach and usually in tring it comes cooked with garlic and other yummy herbs, this was not the case it came uncooked and with about 5 leaves. The avocado that was supposed to be topped with chillies as per the menu came as just a lump of avocado scooped out the skin. The smoothie then took about half an hour to come and when it did it was full of whole lumps of fruit, you'd have thought that after half an hour of being made it would have at least been in the blender a sufficient amount of time. Also despite the wifi password being written all over the menus and on the boards there was no wifi. All of these things I could over look on normal circumstances but when it contradicts whats said on the menu and have also paid £14 for breakfast and a smoothie you tend to feel a little cheesed off.

Ordered food which when it came was tasty but the coffees and teas we’d ordered to go with breakfast ( which themselves took ages to arrive ) had been drunk before the food arrived. Now call me impatient and if they were growing the avocado or baking the bread I can sort of get it. But otherwise they need to re think how they manage their kitchen or re train their staff. I was disappointed with what I got, a hot chocolate served in a mug that tasted strongly of salt (I’m assuming from being in the dishwasher as the whole mug had a white coating) and pancakes that tasted floury served with about 6 berries. I went in when it had newly opened and craved an iced coffee... they were friendly, nonplussed about making it the way I like it to take away... and it tasted amazing and a cut above Costas or any other chain place. The atmosphere can be felt from outside, the individuality I applaud.. Costa, for me, is the most depressing sludgy poo brown decor with fake pictures.. nothing stylish about it...just a tired place to sit in and need to keep up.... It is great when a new place like Black Goo opens. Black Goo is brilliant name... you cannot please everyone can you? It has firmly stamped out its own unique brand, which is tasteful, trendy but with mixed ages, relaxed and hopefully this lovely place will stay. I am not sure about music being too loud, I didn't notice, but if that customer could not cope with it that loud, I am sure they would have turned it down a little... you just need to ask politely .. putting a business down before asking them is a little unfair!

Met for afternoon coffee and cake with a couple of friends. It was a bit quieter than our last visit which was when it had just opened but still a nice buzzy atmosphere.

Great atmoshere. Limited menu but great for eggs any way you like. We stopped around lunch time to see what it is like under the new ownership of the Coffee shop in Tring. We had a selection of meals and we were all pleased with what we got. Our waitress was particularly helpful. They don't do chips or jacket potatos and there is no menu outside. It would also be good for tea / coffee and cake but not suitable for groups of more than 6.

Went here for the first time today. My friend and myself were the only ones there so we decided to sit in the front by the windows. Unfortunately as we like to chat the speakers were placed on the wall above those tables. The music was so loud we couldn't hear ourselves talk. The other tables were for 4 or 6 people so we left.

This coffee shop has great atmosphere. The staff are really friendly, and shock horror seem to have their own personalities. Had a lovely chat with the manager whilst waiting for my coffee.

I have not been here since the name changed. I'm not entirely sure why anyone would want to name a cafe Black Goo.

Black goo has a great atmosphere and music, been there around 6 times now! The avocado and bacon on (gluten free) toast is to die for. Also the cakes are impressive, massive and delicious!! Would 10/10 recommend for anyone looking for amazing food and a great time!

Visited for a birthday coffee and shared an enormous slice of gf cake. The cake was great and the coffee was perfect. Lots of places in Berko have strong or bitter stuff which is horrendous, but this was smooth and great tasting.

Decided to go for breakfast at Black Goo. Walked in and thought I'd entered a nightclub! The music was ridiculously loud for early in the morning. Walked straight out. I em'd the management but got no reply. Not intending to go back

Have been here quite a few times now. The atmosphere is really chilled, the service is great and the good is excellent. All round a great place to relax (especially after walking up countless flights of stairs)

I adore Home and Colonial, used to shop here for many many years. Have just relocated back to the area and came to visit today. Fancied a coffee so climbed to the top floor to try Black Goo. On ordering a cappuccino I was asked if I would be able to finish it in 15 minutes! Not very friendly! Coffee was good. Not sure if the poor service will bring me back. One of the waiters kept throwing cutlery into a tin right next to where I was sat in the window! Hey ho!

Hadn't been here to eat since it re-opened but was surprised how light and airy the cafe seemed from previously. I didn't choose anything from the open table but the poached eggs on toast were lovely as was the coffee. I wanted to give it a good rating but this isn't possible. The reason for wanting to give a 'good' rating is that a lot of the food, and in particular the cakes, are uncovered. Is this hygienic? Probably not and the same is true in the Tring cafe too.

Right at the top of the Home and Colonial building replacing the Attic cafe is Black Goo. A rather odd name but great new cafe. Clean and stylish with some comfortable chairs. Lovely smooth coffee. Cakes looked good although avoided temptation. Recommended for a catch up with friends. They also serve wine

Popped in for a drink and a slice of cake and was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the cakes were not only to taste but to look at too! Really warm friendly feel to the place, would definitely recommend :)

We've tried Black Goo in Tring and we were impressed, so we thought we would try the new opening in Berkhamsted above Home and Colonial.

Very disappointed with the service here, no last orders bell, then told to get out the pub because they've decided to close and don't want to be there anymore because they're working again in the morning. Also there are no glasses after 11pm, just plastic cups.

Had breakfast here as early for meeting, clean and tidy, it was at 8am I did see comments saying they don't serve till 11am so obviously they do now. Food was good and a good price.

Nine of us dined (a late lunch) in the private dining room on the first floor. The team (gloriously international) were friendly, upbeat, patient and attentive. The food was attractive to look at, beautifully cooked and very tasty. We were not pressurised to leave and enjoyed nearly 4 hours of consummate hospitality.
