Rising Sun Hotel restaurant in Tewkesbury

Went for evening meal as we were staying across the road. Being a Greene King pub was concerned about what we would find but new menu and food was good. Jake looked after us and did a great job.

Tom made our night very lovely with his enthusiastic personality. Thank you Tom! Lovely food, lovely pub and lovely company :)

The worst experience in a restaurant in my whole life tonight. The waiter served us a starter which we did not order (a White camembert, chicken strips and fish plate - like??) and did not apologize even though it was significantly more expensive then the simple garlic bread we had asked for (once again, ??). Despite this mistake, he then charged us extra for some freezing bread probably stored in the fridge one minute ago and was totally disrespectful when I asked him to have it warmed up. He totally vanished before the end of the dinner so we had to wait for some time until someone eventually showed up at the counter to pay. The food was mid, only the wine was good. Overall a very bad experience with little to no people (now we understand why) and not up to the standards of the other pubs we found in the region - which were lovely. It’s a shame because the bar seemed nice but it’s hard to get past such a service. PS : a bunch of dishes were not available but it was not announced until after we ordered.

Delicious food, lovely vibes and fantastic service! It was a beautiful evening, and the views were perfect. Our server Jake was brilliant! We had the loveliest evening.

We had booked Sunday lunch in the conservatory and were very pleased to have been offered a table in the conservatory, for a change. However, for the whole duration of our lunch, a young waitress was walking up and down, up and down, setting up a table, making a right racket the whole time, which spoiled our lunch totally. This girl did serve us and we did find her inexperienced. The lunch itself was ok, the little veg that was served with the roast were awful, as if they had been cooked days ago and just microwaved for the meal, hugely disappointing.

Stopped by for a Sunday roast at the Rising Sun encouraged by the views and setting. While location is almost magical food was very mediocre. Roast beef was overdone I struggled to cut it and chewy and potatoes could have been roasted for a bit longer for crispines. Portion wasn't overwhelming either, so still felt peckish after finishing the meal. I could recommend the place for the drinks because of the nice views. Unfortunately, these don't compensate for not so great food experience.

Terrible service in the restaurant. Staff lacked customer service. Waited 15 minutes for our drinks to arrive by this time we had decided what we wanted to eat but were not asked if we were ready to order food and the waiter walked straight away giving no chance for us to ask to order. 10 minutes later the waiter returned to take our order before putting it through on the system he stopped to argue with another couple asking to move tables telling them they were fully booked even though there were other tables free and the same amount of tables would remain if they moved. After that 10 minute debate he went over to the till to put our order through to the kitchen. 45 minutes after us arriving and being seated our food was brought out. Burgers were lovely but the chips and onion rings were cold. The fire exit to the restaurant was open the whole time staff and customers were in and out from the garden every 2 minutes. In my opinion a fire exit in the restaurant area of the pub should not be used as a walk through and was disturbing and unhygienic. Saw other members of staff stop at the till while holding peoples food in the air for 5 minutes plus to put other orders through. Overall a very disorganised and disappointing experience

A chain pub but none the less comfortable and very friendly service . Fabulous views over the valley , and worth it for the sunset alone . The sea bass risotto was particularly good and they keep the ale well. Our evening though was made special because of the attentive service of Oscar and Jess . Lovely place to have an evening meal

We stayed at the rising sun from Monday to Thursday and I must say we had a great time staff very friendly and very helpful food is good quality and good portion size but it’s the attention to detail that is lacking Tuesday morning breakfast no natural yogurt Wednesday morning breakfast no orange juice I did find this very strange as surely they could have got a few bottles out of the bar just for breakfast Had pate as a starter really good and followed with the beef pie wow it’s huge My wife had the halloumi fries and the chicken pie which she complimented then on I had a sirloin steak which I asked to be rare unfortunately it was more medium but due to being good quality meat I did eat I just asked the waiter to convey my feelings to the chef my wife had the pork belly which she also said was very good We stayed in room 21 the suite really really nice room plenty of space and chairs to sit in this is where I would suggest a small table between the chairs as when you sit there with a drink you have to put it on the floor you may also need to check your laundry as the quilt cover that was on the bed had small holes in it and as I did mention on checkout please hoover under the bed it’s not good to see confetti and ribbons and the line where the hoover obviously stops maybe need to get on there knees for this one lol I must just mention the waiter who served us on Wednesday for breakfast maybe you need to show him how to clean his shoes well trainers they where how can I say minging But overall a real lovely stay attention to detail you could easily get a 5 star and we would visit again

Lovely place, food was fabulous, friendly staff, Lewis was the perfect host. Menu was really reasonably priced, plenty to suit all budgets and I was spoilt for choice fir something different. Asian Pork belly was amazing. Hubby had the cajun chicken ..omg so tender and lightly crisped.

Been staying here on and off for work for a while now, service as been patchy in the past but today was a real step up in service, efficiency without feeling rushed. Jam was polite and attentive, qualities becoming a rarity in this industry. It was a pleasure to be served by her.

We have visited for a number of years and usually absolutely love the breakfast with santa, (The santa and reindeer was fabulous and the gifts the children received) we were slightly disappointed this year as it just seemed like our table of 16 was a little to much hassle for the bar staff at the end of our breakfasts. We always spend a lot of money when we come and we just felt like we were being made out to be liars when it came down to paying and the bill had been made complicated. Some older children we had paid deposits for was then having adult breakfasts which we expected to of had the deposits taken off that but the bar lady had said no because they had gifts ( which I had personally brought/wrapped and slyly given to santa because they don't supply gifts for over 12s) which is also fine but to not listen to our point about that and then get slightly stressed when we are sorting it out amongst ourselves and trying to explain about the deposits that were paid etc is very frustrating.

Very efficient and friendly service. Lovely food and great drinks. A fantastic place to stay if going to the races. Excellent location for walking. Jem looked after us in the restaurant and was absolutely brilliant. The food was just right, excellent value, tasty and a good portion size. We are booking again.

This was a special event for us to thank our children for giving us a lovely Christmas. We booked a table for 11 people, and we were served by Jamilia (Jam), who was lovely. She took all our orders and was very efficient in serving our drinks, meals, and desserts. The food was lovely and hot and well presented. Nothing was too much trouble for her. Thankyou Jam for giving us a great experience. We look forward to seeing you again.

Lovely hotel at a very affordable price in a great location. Dinner was excellent. they have propper pies, not stew with a crust on top! Service was excellent and staff were very friendly. My server was a lass called Abbie. The real ale was well kept and served. Room was great value and very comfortable, with plenty of space and all the facilities you would need. Spectacular view from the room too. No Hanging Gardens of Babylon and any heards of wildebeest sweeping majestically across the plain were too far away to spot with the naked eye, but never the less, fabulous. Breakfast was excellent and plentyful too. In all thoroughly recommended.

Rang last minute, to see if we could book a table, on what was a busy night. We were booked in and able to come straight away, and welcomed upon arrival. The server we had was Tom. He was excellent, very knowledgeable and gave great service. The food was good and very tasty, we have been many times and have always had a good experience. Thank you all for another great meal. We booked for a party of 12. Couldn't fault the food or staff. Zoe, Lewis and Zsabi all made this a pleasurable evening. Will definitely be back.

We arrived after racing. Nobody on Reception, the sign said ring '0' on the phone provided. Guess what, it rzng the desk where we were stznding! I went to find someone and was sent back to reception. A harassed young man appeared and booked us it. The room was fine. It was cold as the heating was not on. We went down for the meal we gas booked and were directed to the dungeon dining room downstairs. It was cold in there too. The meal was lovely, our waiter Tom was run off his feet but had a sense of humour! That lad needs a bonus! He went off shift before we finished, so a BIG 'Thank you' to him. After the meal we went up to the bar area, which was warm! There was a singer there for our entertainment and we even had a dance or two. Next morning, we had a massive breakfast, which was good too and good value. The only thing that I would have changed is that we were seated in the middle of the room on a table for six and other guests had to keep pushing past us.I did ask if we could move to a table for four in the corner, but I was told it had not been laid. Shame, it would only have taken a couple of minutes. All in all, a good pre-Christmas stay.

The food was good and the atmosphere was great. However, I was not very happy at the end that the manager insisted to charge me a drink which I didn't order and refused to honour the promise they offered (ie. the wrong drink should be free). I didn't want to make the particular waiter in trouble and hence didn't argue back and paid the bill but please be careful as it could be a trick they use to try to make more money from the customer. The waiter did apologise to me at the end of the inconvenience caused.

The service from Tom was excellent and meal was very tasty and the price was great value Would definitely recommend anyone to go

A very tasty meal at a reasonable price. Jack took our orders promptly and we didn't have to wait too long for him to return with our drinks and meals. A very pleasant experience.

We looked for a hotel with good reviews, value for money and located within 30 mins an airfield occupied by aero superbatics display team. We would have liked a swimming pool, but many hotels had no room availability or were at least double the price of the Rising Sun (without breakfast). After reading the reviews for this hotel we booked direct, online for 2 nights which came with a 20% discount off all food. We acknowledged some of the reviews which were not necessarily negative but noted merely as an observation. We arrived on a stunning, warm and clear day. The views from the beer garden are stunning. Lots of areas to sit, dine in the beer garden, secluded terraces and under cover by the hotel. Our room was No 11. It was clean and had a good shower. The road at the front of the hotel is busy but quietens as the day finishes. The hotel is set far enough away from the road in an elevated position which helps to combat any disturbance to guests. It certainly did not affect our sleep. The food was ok and if you are staying at a natiinal 'pub' chain, you know exactly what food will be on the menu. I did have a lasgne on my 2nd night and that wasn't particularly enjoyable!! The restaurant is large, clean with nice seating areas, many with stunning views. The bar is good. The staff are very helpful, extremely pleasant and as always, hard working. Would we stay there again. Yes, without doubt

I took a couple of family friends to the Rising Sun for an evening meal on their joint 80th birthday which was yesterday. The meal was lovely and Jam who was our waitress was exceptionally friendly and helpful. I supplied a birthday cake and this was brought out without any prompting and Jam and several other members of staff sang happy birthday to both 80 year olds which they really enjoyed. The staff and particularly Jam made them both feel special and enhanced their enjoyment of the occasion.

What a disgrace!! My husband had a glass of red wine spilt all over him and myself. Ruining a £120 white t-shirt and his mobile phone. The red wine also went all in my husbands dinner and her reply was ‘ oh well, it adds extra flavour’!! The way we were spoken to by the waitress and the manager was absolutely disgusting and because we complained we were then asked to leave. And then the manager shouted saying Infact you are barred! Barred because our evening was ruined and the fact a mobile phone and a tshirt is now ruined also! I can’t believe the service we received. The waitress also lied because she said the wine was spilt because one of the guests we were with took a pint of the tray which is 100% lie! The people we were sat next to also witnessed this. An apology would be nice.

Delicious and Charming! We loved the mushroom and truffle soup! The food, service and beautiful setting in the English countryside - just perfect!

the hotel room was clean, and well equipped but carpet was looking a little tired. looked like there was some refurbishing going on though. staff were excellent cheerful and helpful. food was ok and served with a smile.

Beef, Beef, Turkey for the kids trio of roasts was no problem (rather than beef, pork and turkey). Adult meals all delicious too, especially the huge fluffy Yorkshire pud. Puddings amazing. All at a reasonable price with a fabulous view. Jom and team of waiters were great and kept the kids amused and smiling. A really great Sunday Lunch. We will be back.

This is standard Greene King fayre - which means it's pretty good - and the service was good. And the view from the pub was amazing. Two niggles: Why does the drinks menu show costs for wine, but not for spirits, soft drinks or low/no alcohol? Prices should be on the menu, surely. And please don't call us "guys". We got called that nine times while we were there. Just serve us nicely (which you did), without trying to be our mates. I guess you're trained to be pally - but personally I just think it's a tad disrespectful. Otherwise very pleasant evening.

Great food and portions. My dad had Hunters chicken which he loved. I had the risotto which was perfect and not over seasoned. My daughter has sausages and mash which was a very decent kids portion. I shared the Eton Mess sundae with my daughter which was delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful. The views are stunning. My only criticisms- to tidy up the garden area and rest rooms.

Arriving at the pub, we asked for Bucks Fizz to be told that she didnt think they had any Champagne. I said about Prosecco. She found a bottle that we had to open because of her bad wrist. She had to find out how to charge for it too. Later after our walk we wanted a nice lunch. The food was really below standard. Hunters chicken was an over microwaved dish making the chicken and bacon hard and the sauce congealed around the side of the dish. Couldn't see any cheese. The Steak and Cheese Ciabatta was more Ciabatta than filling and the steak was extremely well done. We had Eaton Mess Sundae. Just about a filled sundae glass. Just sauce, ice cream and cream. With such a lovely setting I would have expected nicely cooked pub grub. I'm not a review writing person but felt that this does need to be addressed. Also, for some reason, only a Garden Menu was available!
