Visited today for a family lunch. When we asked which sandwiches would be safe for our daughter (who has a peanut allergy) to eat, the response from the staff showed an alarming level of ignorance, as well as a complete lack of sympathy for the impact it had on a ten year old. We were warned to avoid pesto because it contained “pine nuts” (which aren’t nuts and certainly aren’t peanuts) and were then told that nothing was safe to eat because “it’s a bakery” and it’s impossible to avoid cross contamination. I enquired how they were able to market certain sandwiches as vegan if their kitchen management standards are so lax around cross contamination; could they really say they didn’t accidentally contain meat? It’s really disappointing that after so many high profile and very sad stories of accidental contamination this cafe isn’t more aware of the issues allergy sufferers face.

Such a shame. This cafe used to be a gem on Richmond Hill. Now... a soulless, cheap rent looking place charging exorbitant prices. Every item of food was stuck in a single use plastic bag - even if eat in. So the lovely gifts, candles etc have been replaced by shelves of paper cups, bulk packets of napkins and paper roll. All character gone. Not worth the walk up the hill and definitely not worth the prices they are charging

Walking into the Richmond Hill Bakery is a bit of a clenched-teeth experience these days. Choosing what to buy is ok (not a fantastic selection, but some very nice stuff albeit croissants in pre-pack bags(!)). But then comes the hard bit: communicating with the surly, reluctant staff - especially the guy. How long must I stand there, clearly wanting to place an order, waiting to get eye contact from the bloke as he fusses with the till and deliberately ignores me? How many times must I say what I want while I'm apparently deliberately misunderstood? And if I have the impertinence to arrive at, say, 15 minutes before the official closing time... I'll find the staff washing down the floor and telling you to go away.

It pains me to write this about a once much loved cafe, but it’s time to call it out. It used to be run by a local restaurant owner who truly cared about customers. The food was good, the coffees well made with good beans. Years ago, another owner took over. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, it has declined. The portions got smaller (sometimes they think we don’t notice), the food had less variety, the bread for sale less good quality. None of the old staff remain. It’s a cafe of hugely loyal customers, yet the owner still doesn’t know most names. The atmosphere has collapsed. It’s a shell of what it was. And the coffees are pretty poor. Richmond has a lot of choice; try ButterBeans for the best coffee, Ole & Steen for good sandwiches.. this Bakery could learn from others. I don’t think it can.

I’ve really grown fond of regularly coming here for coffee and occasional breakfast but I’ve finally been beaten this morning after an extremely lacklustre experience. Unfortunately there is a distinct lack of genuineness and warmth from the staff, especially the guy who appears to be the owner/boss. I understand running a business is difficult from my own experience, but I regularly put money in to this coffee shop, and the least you expect is a smile, or even the person serving you to concentrate on you and your order and not to just treat you like a punter. The person I just mentioned really needs to change the attitude or I’ll follow the actions of my friend who’s already changed venues to a few doors up for the same reasons I’ve mentioned. I do love the venue and the coffee and food, but the attitude and customer service is rubbish. Please change as I love the place!

What a fabulous find. We spent the weekend at Richmond Hill Hotel just around the corner. Not wanting a typical hotel breakfast, we googled cafes close by for breakfast. This was superb. Indoor seating. First class service. Great selection of pastries. Coffee was good albeit we asked for double shots. Quiet, peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. We loved this so much, I would travel there from central London just for breakfast. They do take-away so easy to buy a coffee and croissant and head to the local park to enjoy the view. It is clear that the owners of this cafe care about customer service. Highly recommended.

Richmond Hill Bakery is a cute little bakery with good quality produce in a nice location. Unfortunately, it is completely let down by the staff that are employed there. Totally disinterested and frosty. The employees were all quite young which is great but it was quite clear they’d all rather be elsewhere on a Sunday afternoon. We’re new to the area and would’ve definitely returned had it not been for the service we received. We were ignored completely when we greeted them huddled around the counter. Service from staff were horrendous. Surly come backs and snotty responses to our questions. It was our first time visiting this cafe. It looked like a cosy cafe, however the procedures to order your drink was strange. You pay at a till in front of the store, then you'll have to re-order your drink at the back of the store where you'll collect them. We were not aware of that and the lady at the counter said in a very rude manner, "well, it's written on this paper right in front of you!". Absolutely shocking to that response.

Went Richmond Hill Bakery to meet a friend for breakfast. I must say, if you wish to get annoyed on a lovely Saturday morning, this is the place to go! I waited in a queue for so long to get my breakfast and tea, just to find out that you pay at the till but get your drink at a bar or whatever they call it. So then you clutch your wallet and try not to drop a place with food whilst you wait in a second queue to get your drink! The place is tiny and full of people with kids. So they run around and push you, so a chance of you dropping your food is 20 out of 10!! I was waiting in this second queue for over 15 minutes. There were two people who were supposed to be making drinks. Only one of them was doing so as the other was chatting to one of the people in the queue clearly oblivious of the surroundings. Very very disappointed in the serving system. The food itself was nice, but some items well overpriced for what they were. Never ever coming back.

I have been here quite a few times and have mixed opinions. It is, in my view hopeless for lunch due to the unnecessary use of mayonnaise in ham and cheese sandwiches, which simply doesn't belong. I respect the owner's response suggesting my previous review was misleading, however, I stand by the comment that mayonnaise spread on bread amounts to "smothered" and that the product itself is processed junk that ruins an otherwise good product. The point he does not address is that mayonnaise is simply not a product that belongs in a jambon beurre, and the item sold would be massively improved by using butter. I would respectfully suggest that constructive criticism is taken on board, rather than being so defensive.

This small bakery is a locals hang out. In addition to brioche, the daily quiche is to die for. try to avoid the crowds of moms who gather about 9am after dropping of the kiddos at local schools

It's a cute and charming little coffee shop with great coffee and delicious desserts. We had the most spectacular chocolate cake. I'm not a big fan of chocolate cake, but my children wanted some. When I took the first bite, just could stop. The fruit tart and almond croissant were delicious too!! The staff were super friendly, and the decoration was really cute and cozy. Had a lovely afternoon!!

We got married last August and Richmond Hill Bakery made our wedding cake - it was totally stunning. We wanted a 'naked' cake (a tower of sponge cakes filled with fresh fruit and cream) and, wow, did they deliver. After my initial chat over coffee with the lovely bakery manager Jo Holland, some scrumptious cake samples were prepared for us (yum!) so that we could choose our flavours. The melt-in-the-mouth vanilla-and-fresh-blueberry sponge we opted for was incredible. And our finished wedding cake was spectacular: six tiers of vanilla and blueberry deliciousness, filled with clotted cream and berries, and decorated to wild perfection with icing sugar, more berries, fresh jasmine and fresh roses. It looked fabulous...and it tasted like heaven! We served it for dessert at the wedding and it went down to rave reviews. Thank you Richmond Hill Bakery, and especially Jo and head chef Paulo - our cake goddess and cake god!!

Expensive coffee at it's finest. The most superior coffee I have tasted and a selection of cakes to really enjoy. You must try the breakfast roll, tiny but so lovely.

Rather quirky arrangement where you order at the counter, have the pastries delivered to your table, but collect your own coffee at the back of the shop. Very good selection of bread, cakes, and pastries. They also sell candles, scarves, and other merchandise.

Although I agree with all of the positive comments about the character and atmosphere of the bakery, I have never found the staff unfriendly except for one dishevelled, bearded individual, who on first sight, I mistook for an irate intoxicated customer.

This is a welcoming, bustling café which serves excellent cakes, bread and savouries, all baked on the premises. They have a good range of teas and make excellent coffee. The staff are unfailingly friendly Dogs are allowed. A real find!

Came here for breakfast with my girlfriend and her parents. What a lovely, lovely place. The inside decor is superb and the food was just as great. I had a cappuccino, a croissant, and a bun with mozzarella, rocket, and tomatoes for breakfast. Everything was so fresh! Definitely coming back here.

I have come here for quite some time, and always found this cafe a friendly and nice place to go. It's very much a community cafe, always visited by locals and often along with their dogs! They have got some nice lunch rolls not to forget their lovely cakes and tarts. Coffee and tea not bad either. I will keep coming back again and again!

It has such a familiar atmosphere of coziness and trust! The pastries, cakes and sandwiches are all done in the premises and the bread is delicious. We go daily since we moved to the Hill one year ago.

Possibly the worst cooked breakfast we’ve ever attempted to eat . The service was polite and no problems there but the food was simply awful . Processed ham , a pale fried egg and some frozen chips . Indelible and the little I ate repeated on me all day , my daughter felt quite unwell after attempting to eat the full English - managed 1 sausage toast and a few beans . Go over the bridge and there are some beautiful cafes instead.

We went here as a family on a Sunday for lunch, the 4 of us ate in the bar ordered at the bar and were shocked to find we were charged 10% service charge for eating in the bar, which is separate from the restaurant, apart from bringing our food to our table I don’t know why we were charged this service charge for as we did not receive table service. The roast dinner we ordered at £21 each for myself and my partner was exactly the same size portion as my sons child’s roast that cost £8.50, when we complained to the manager we were told ‘to order a kids portion next time to save some money’, lovely customer relations, we were told that this is a chain. The place is always empty now we see why, the service is shocking, there are flies everywhere. We will not be returning to this profiteering extortionate bar again.

A lovely venue. Friendly and helpful staff. We only went in for a drink but next time will have a meal. Food looked good and judging by the amount of people in the restaurant it is a popular venue.

We have enjoyed eating here in the past but on this occasion it was a definite deux points. When you pay nearly £50 for two small plates of fish and chips and two pints of cider you expect it to be better than the fish and chips at Morrisons. Instead the fish was dry and clearly not restaurant quality while the chips were indifferent at best. If I’d paid £8 in a cafe I would have been disappointed but in a “bistro” pub that pretends to be a Belgian style restaurant it feels like yet another eating establishment that has lost its way.
