We were staying in the village and went to the White Rose for an evening meal. The bar area was quite busy - it being a Friday night, but the bar staff were pleasant, attentive and helpful. When we ordered we were offered the choice of remaining in the bar area or sitting in the restaurant area to eat and we chose the latter. Our meals were all very good and reasonably priced and waiting staff were pleasant and efficient. The beer was well kept too!

We stopped here for food on the recommendation of the owner of the B&B we were staying at, and it was a great choice. We both had steak pie, which was outstanding, followed by a large sticky toffee pudding to share. Good size portions of everything, and reasonable prices. Service was very friendly, and the place had a busy village feel to it.

Well what a find this turned out to be! Last minute walk in for evening meal on Sunday and they couldn’t have been more accommodating. The food, and in particular the rack of lamb was sensational followed by the best sticky toffee I’ve ever had! Service was excellent too. Tony the chef did an amazing job. The lamb was local and fabulous. Couldn’t fault it. Well done to the staff at White Rose. First class.

The food wasn't great, my wife chose the pan fried chicken, this came with a red wine and mushroom sauce and mashed potato. The mushrooms were fine but the sauce had little taste, was watery and there wasn't much of it. The mashed potato was very lumpy and contained horse-radish which neither of us could remember seeing as an ingredient on the menu (as she wouldn't have chosen this if it was shown as she doesn't like it). I had the lasagne which was okay but the salad that came with it was a bit limp. The restaurant lacks any atmosphere and was cold because the door to the garden was left open the whole time. Not a great experience. The service was okay to start with, but there was only one girl serving the whole restaurant and as the evening went the waits got longer.

Three eateries in Askrigg, and personally this would be my third choice. It is more of the local pub than a restaurant. They appear to be short staffed, like much of hospitality at the moment, but the young girl in the restaurant deserves a pay rise and a medal, for all the running around she does. There was more staff behind the bar, who I felt should have been assisting her and the older lady in a busy restaurant. The couple on the next table were given a desserts menu, and then ignored for half an hour, when the guy did eventually give his order, and mentioned the wait, he was told chef wanted to get the table of 11 sorted first. Perhaps if they had known this, when given the menu, they might have felt less ignored. On being served our food, which was nice, we were not asked at any point if it was ok, which is the usual in restaurants. We had to wait for drinks, and I feel the drinks order should have been taken within a few minutes of sitting down, maybe the bar staff need to do this, to take the pressure off the restaurant staff. We were not shown to our table, just told which table number it was. It’s these small details which I personally think are letting it down. The food is pub style not restaurant, and if they can just get the service right, them it would improve customer ratings.

Ok, the food was at best average but incredibly overpriced, the so called Elton mess was as far away from an Elton mess as you could get with the minimal amount of cream or ice cream, poor merengue and just loads of fruit sauce that made it way too sour. The more worrying thing was the number of guests (and the bar staff) who seem to believe the wearing of masks is optional indoors. We felt very conspicuous because we wore mask when moving around. Even when COVID restrictions are finished I would be concerned about the hygiene standards. We won’t be going back.

Had a lovely meal here but left early as were concerned that COVID measures weren’t good enough. Staff were not wearing masks and the tables in the restaurant were too close together. No windows were open, it was very warm and there was a table of 4 talking loudly with two of their party coughing, one into his hands. They did give us a form to fill in and cutlery was brought on a tray for us to set out ourselves. The bar area was quieter with tables much more spaced out.

Called in after a day out in the area. As it was a Sunday afternoon we asked if we needed to book a table for drinks in the evening only to be told if there were any available then just come in but there was a cricket match on in the village and it would be busy. So we arrived later to find the bar area quite full and the pool table room crowded with players all stood talking and drinking. Waited a while for a table but once sat felt a bit more safe but there seemed no rules regarding standing at the bar drinking and very little social distancing. As it was a special occasion with the cricket team just starting up again after 20+ years we said it was a one off so we returned the next night for a meal which although expensive for what you get was quite nice. Staff nice and friendly and drinks on par with other places in the area.

Food was average but tasty and waitress was friendly. The thing that surprised us the most was the lack of Covid-19 safety measures visible to the public (although I do not doubt that they had completed their risk assessment). Despite being a quiet night, we were given a table number by the staff at the bar which was directly next (and very close) to another table by the window in the restaurant. We were asked to order drinks at the bar and there were no signs of face coverings or barriers anywhere. There was hand sanitiser at the door. This experience was very different to the other eating experiences which we had had on our 9 day holiday and we would not return. We were also overcharged slightly on a drink - a pineapple juice was put under 'wine' but we decided to let this go on this occasion.

We had Valentines night dinner out in the White Rose. Quick, efficient service, cosy intimate atmosphere and choice of good beers. Portion sizes-perfect and price spot on. But the Title says it all; our meal was stunningly tasty and to die for, presented beautifully and cooked to perfection. Starter of smoked salmon was fresh, top quality with crisp salad leaves. The main of rack of lamb- just pinked, crisp where it should be and tender. Dauphinoise potatoes - melting, with crunch and creamy softness. I could happily eat the main meal every day! ....I wish!....For the high standard of the food, presentation and quality of taste, this was a total bargain dinner out. We went here for a midweek evening meal. The bar area looked dated so first impressons weren't great. Having a large TV on (Coronation Street isn't my favourite programme at the best of times) and background music on at the same time didn't really add to the atmosphere however the staff were friendly and prompt so we ordered our food; fish and chips and lasagne. The fish and chips were straight out the freezer and into the fryer and the lasagne was half the size we would normally expect. We were still hungry so tried the blackberry eton mess. I am not sure if there was ever any meringue but all we could find was a huge lump of cream with a few berries on top. I know that they are having issues with the chef but this was really quite poor and for what should be very simple dishes to be knocked up by a cook was a dissappointment.

Arrived at the White Rose about 6.30 pm . We were so happy and ready to enjoy our weekend away. We went to check in. The women who was looking after us had the most sour looking face on her. She gave us our key, told us our room was up 4 flights of stairs. Then turn left and we would find our number 8 room down there. Nobody showed us to the room or were interested on if we found it or not. The room was very dated but clean. Plenty of draws and hanging space. We unpacked then went back down to the bar. The same women served up ( still with a sour face) We got our drinks then asked if we could book a table. The restaurant was half empty but we still had to wait 1hour. It seemed to us people could only go into the restaurant to there table every half an hour . We finally got sat down .Our order was taken and the wait started . 25 minutes later our starters came. They had forgotten to put grated cheese on my husbands starter . there was no one around to tell so we let it go. Then.about 40 minutes later our main course arrived. Looked good. Did not ask if there anything else that we wanted just rushed off. My husband wanted some French mustard . So he put his hand up to call her over to him and as she came rushing past him she court his hand. She turned around and shouted at him saying Did you pock me that is an asult . We felt very uncomfortable. I just wanted to go back to our room out off the way We paid our bill and went back to our room. Could not believe what had just happened . We thought we would forget about it and hope that she was not serving breakfast. Through the night we found the bed was not good. A new one is needed, springs sticking out all over. didn't get a good nights sleep. Did not think it could get any worse. Breakfast would only give if 1 out of 10. But I can say the young girl that served us could show the others a thing or two. Very happy and lots off smiles, On checking out there was no one there to take our key or even to say hope you enjoyed your stay .NEVER again would we stay there again

We enjoyed our meal last Saturday at the White Rose Hotel, in the light and airy Orangery Restaurant. Our starters were a mini quiche and chicken liver pate. My only slight criticism was that there was a thick layer of solid butter on top of the pate which I thought my doctor would highly disapprove of! It was easily removed though and the pate beneath was light and delicious. For our main courses we had the salmon with crab bisque and, from the specials menu, slow-cooked lamb with green vegetables. The lamb was so tender it just fell apart, the gravy was well but not over-seasoned, and the vegetables were perfectly cooked. As for the crab bisque, just don't tell your doctor about the amount of cream in it!

Oh dear, where to start... Just been for a meal at this pub/restaurant/rooms, having been there for a meal about 12 months ago. It was great on our first visit, but this time it was horrible. We were the only customers there at 6.30 on a Friday evening which should maybe have been a clue - we ordered from the very friendly and helpful waitress, two 'crispy' pork belly with black pudding, mash, cabbage and gravy, a salmon with crayfish and chive risotto, and the gammon steak with fried eggs, chips and peas. You can order in two sizes - regular and small - we all went regular. The food arrived promptly and first thoughts? How small were the 'small' portions if these were regular?! Oh well, we were really hungry so tucked in, which is when the real trouble started. The risotto rice (which was very, very white looking, no creaminess at all) was undercooked - not just a bit of bite, more of a crunch and snap. When we mentioned this to the waitress she took it back to the kitchen only to return with the message 'what do you want the chef to do'??! Seriously??!! Cook it properly! This didn't exactly inspire confidence in the chef, so veg was requested in place of the rice - the dish was then brought back with the same piece of salmon, some boiled carrots, broccoli and cold pickled red cabbage. Not exactly inspiring. The pork had had been stuffed with the black pudding, rolled and cooked - absolutely no crispness at all, with the soggy skin still on it. The mash was OK bar the odd large hard lump of potato, as was the minuscule amount of sauce. All a bit bland, under seasoned and lacking care. The gammon was the thinner, horseshoe shape found in the supermarket. Ok but not worth the gastro price.

Veg served were red cabbage, parsnips, cauliflower cheese and mange tout with carrots. All of it was beautiful! A few customers did not want their meat so pink and the staff were more than happy to take their portion of beef and cook it further for them which was good to see.

Great service within range of menu choice - had salmon on a bed of crayfish risotto. Comfortable dining atmosphere. The bar was lively & noisy but luckily we were able to eat in the dining area is separate. There was a couple of round tables for larger groups like ours. Everyone agreed this was the best place to eat in Askrigg - good quality food & very reasonably priced.

We were a party of 6 on a walking weekend. We popped into the White Rose and got a table at short notice on a Friday evening. The food was fantastic. The ale pie got a big thumbs up, as did the creamed leak and blue cheese parcels, not to mention the salmon risotto. Flavoursome, high quality food. We all gave it ten out of ten. Lovely staff too.

The food at the White Rose was very good but the whole feel of the place is a bit old fashioned. The food was reasonable value for money and was well prepared and presented.

We stopped here for lunch. Old fashioned interior but friendly staff and punters. Our food arrived swiftly and was of a good standard. I had fish and chips and my partner had scampi. Well cooked fish and pretty good chips. Apparently they pull a good pint too.

The pub over the road was fully booked so we ended up here. Had to dodge the darts to get into the pub then after asking for a table we were told by the landlady that we could have number 14 and she waved in a general direction. After we found our table we ordered and awaited our meal. The prawn cocktail was prawns on iceburg lettuce with sauce and 1 x cherry tomato on the side. My main was salmon with tomato risotto. The salmon was the cheap frozen kind that was very thin and the risotto was not cooked, still very chalky. I sent it back and was informed that I had to choose something else. I had lasagna that had no taste at all and I just left it. Shocking place to eat.

The worst meal I have had in at least 30 years. This place is so bad. Waited an hour for the venison, which was simply inedible. Lack of care from staff and disinterested owner. If you are reading this, do not go there.

We had intended going further up the road but decided to call in for a drink on the way. After having a couple of drinks and seeing and smelling some of the other diners food we decided to stay put and order here.Hubby had belly pork which was served with savoy cabbage and mashed potato , he requested chips instead, I ordered the pheasant off the specials board, we both agreed the food was immense, the waitress was also very good. By the time we left 8.30pm the bar area was quite busy. Definitely worse a return visit.

The landlady has a rather lukewarm way of greeting you but we had been warned about this so we took it as a challenge to get on her good side ! Once negotiating this and taking our seat in the restaurant her staff served us and the meal was good . Overall the food was good but the dining room was large and impersonal. You could eat in the hotel bar but again a large rectangular room , with. A huge TV.

We walked from Bainbridge on a lovely sunny day and we enjoyed a great pint and a half in the White Rose Hotel's beer garden. It was a lovely spot in the sun and would certainly head for it again, whenever visiting Askrigg and fancying a beer.

Four of us had an excellent meal at this nice old pub. They employ a chef, not a cook. Great, interesting menu, very pleasant waitress. I had chicken stuffed with haggis with a good serving of well-cooked veg - delicious.

We were staying opposite at the King's Arms but felt it only fair that we sampled all the pubs in Askrigg so tottered across for a preprandial. Bit surprised to find the manager of one of the other pubs (I'll not say which 'cause he's a very nice guy and I wouldn't want to cause probs) having a relaxing drink at the bar. Perhaps not as much character as either the Crown or the King's Arms but a perfectly acceptable pub serving decent beer in a friendly and welcoming manner. That's all we ever hope for.

My husband and I visited White Rose hotel on two occasions during our recent week long holiday in Wensleydale. We hadn't booked on either occasion and the staff on reception were not at all welcoming. Once they'd decided they could accommodate us they just pointed in the direction of the restaurant and told us what table number to sit at!Once we got into the restaurant the waiting staff were friendly (if a bit disorganised at times). The food was excellent and good value for money. When we asked if we could add a tip when paying by credit card, the young man behind the bar looked at us as if we'd got two heads!! The owner of the cottage we were staying in told us that they don't recommend the White Rose to their guests because of the unfriendly staff on reception. That's a shame because the food is very good.

Ok, so it's not the best I've ever had but certainly not the worst either. We went for dinner here because the Kings Arms were fully booked. Very odd atmosphere in here...it was quiet and quite eerie :/ The atmosphere wasn't helped by the fact that half way through our meal, the local darts league started playing a game of darts RIGHT next to where we were sitting...how rude! I did notice the dart board on the wall next to our table, but I never thought I'd be dodging darts whist trying to eat my dinner! We weren't sure if it was table service or not so we just walked in and sat at an empty table....after quite a few minutes of looking around and trying to spot a staff member, I ended up just going to the bar and asking if it was table service, "You order here" was the reply...er, ok I said, do you have a menu? And was handed two menus (quite begrudgingly I thought) I ordered two drinks and went back to my seat. My partner ordered the Steak pie (veg & chips) and I went for the Haddock (veg & chips) It seemed to take an age to arrive, so long that both our drinks were finished! My fish was dry, not very fresh and was dripping in grease. The chips were also over done and swimming in grease. My partner said the steak pie was so-so but the meat & gravy inside tasted quite processed and a bit like canned stew and had the same issue with the chips as me obviously. So that was that really :) Wouldn't go back but don't suppose they'd care. On a lighter note, we did go to the Kings Arms the following night and it was fabulous ;) I just did a review on that. So, thanks for reading my wee rant and hope you've found it helpful :) If you did, please hit the thumbs up button. Ta x

A pleasant meal at this hotel. We booked on the day. Restaurant is quite small but the food provided was of a reasonably good standard and the service was very good - would return if back in Askrigg. A small wine list of reasonable variety. Price for 2 adults of 2 courses plus wine was under £40 so good value.

This was my only free camping experience of the coast to coast and truly one of my best camping experiences of the whole trip! You get a toilet, shower, washer and dryer, all for free and just donation based. There were even laundry pods. They stopped serving food at 4pm the day I was there but were happy to help me order food if needed and sold a few snacks which kept me going through the night. Also the locals couldn’t have been friendlier and made for a lively night :) would highly recommend!

Always loved the Crown in Hawes, beautiful pub with amazing food, but I've just been again with different management and they've completely upped the standard. The food was incredible, Amir the chef is brilliant, I recommend the beef stifado. The owners Toni and Rob are so friendly and welcoming, we did not want to go home. Will definitely be going back.
