Had a dinner arranged with friends and I decided to stay the night and have a few drinks without messing around with taxis. The room was cosy on a chilly, damp March night and the bed was soft and very comfortable. The food, service and drinks were exceptional and the interior decor matches the exterior beauty of the building. I look forward to returning.

Impromptu early evening get together with our new neighbours almost thwarted by being unaware of ‘locals night’. Place fully booked out inside for their first Thursday of every month, great value menu. Offered outside dining as only option and luckily weather just good enough. Lovely garden tables nonetheless. Told supplier had let them down and only the regular menu steak options and limited other available for walk-ins. No problemo! Two rib-eyes and a flat iron later, plus I can’t remember the fourth choice, and we were extremely well fed, well watered and very happy with our lot. Great service as always.

We booked in for Sunday lunch here and although the pub and location are lovely, the food was disappointing. We live locally and have dined at nearly all the pubs in the area and sorry to say, we found this the poorest so far. It's not that the food was badly cooked, it just seemed to be basic in comparison to the meals we've had elswhere at similar price. Other issues were no vegetarian option on the roast dinner menu and the roast sirloin option priced at an eye watering £28.

Eleven of us for Sunday lunch. Nine served before they realised they had forgotten two guests. Those two meals came when everyone else had finished. Food no better than passable. Little in the way of an apology. Will not be going back!

Lovely pub, simple clean rooms, but felt a bit disheartened to be greeted quite rudely by the manager, we knew check in was 2.30pm but before we had a chance to say we were heading straight out at 12pm we were barked out from across the bar by the rude male manager stating that check in was at 2.30pm without any sort of welcome. We then went out for the evening for dinner to then to return home for a night cap at 21:45 which was rejected abrubtely by the same manager still sat at the end of the bar on his laptop when the garden was full and the people were still very much in the bar area. I mean seriously how much admin did he have on all day in a tiny pub to not leave the same spot! Coming from a Hospitality background its a shame to not feel welcome and looked after. We be back!

It's been a while since I last came here - not since pre-Covid times, in fact. My last review of this place wasn't altogether favourable, but things appear to have improved somewhat since then. It's a pleasant pub in an attractive village location. Service is still on the slow side although, to be fair, the barman/waiter did advise us there would be a bit of a wait for food. One of the other correspondents has recently commented they could do with extra staff and I would certainly concur with that view. The food, from an ever changing menu, is very good, although not cheap. On the bar, it was a rare treat in Oxfordshire to find the excellent Uley Pale alongside the ubiquitous Taylor's Landlord. There is also a pleasant garden.

5 ladies on an impromptu night out for a bite to eat. just 2 waiting staff, who were lovely, but over worked. the food was amazing, although only one veggie option. that needs to change £15 for half an inch of mushroom rissotto which took forever to come out we were not asked if we needed more drinks and didnt want to go to the bar as the rugby was on and we didnt fancy wrestling to the bar. Could be wonderful here just need to think of the customer experience. Yes, it is hard to recruit these days so reduce the amount of dining tables, service swifter and more efficient. More balance between bank balance and looking after customers

Manages to be both cosy (log burner in the old fireplace) and spacious, with wood panelling and stone floors. Cute village setting, and pub to match; close to the Oxford - Banbury road so accessible, but quiet. Saturday lunch was reasonably busy but easy to be distanced from other parties. They seemed to have a private dining room for people wearing ties. The food was impressive and a brief wine list similarly so - easy to negotiate. We'll be going again.

This is a friendly pub in a quiet and picturesque village with parking and outside tables. We had a very good lunch with mains including roast chicken and a cheeseburger. The potatoes were cooked in duck fat served with loads of tender chicken and roast cabbage. A great atmosphere with prompt service no doubt closely watched by the owner who was at the adjacent table. This place is within striking distance of the M40 and worth both a destination visit and a journey stop off. Due to Covid I did not go inside but there was hand gel on the tables and we all felt very secure. The bill for 4 with modest drinks was £96 excluding service.

The White Horse has been my local for nearly 40 years and I really should have reviewed it sooner. I am just spoiled having it literally on my doorstep. Since Michael took over the management of the pub it has gone from strength to strength. The staff are all very welcoming and friendly and the food is always excellent. Michael goes out of his way to make sure that allergies and food intolerances are catered for. On Thursday we had yet another lovely meal with friends, perfectly cooked and good service. The Southern Fried Chicken is the best I have ever had and if there is belly pork on the menu you simply must try it. The menu is changed daily so you may not be lucky but there is always something that will tempt. Thank you again Micheal, Alex and all the staff for a lovely evening.

Another new place for Sunday lunch. We received a very warm welcome & had an interesting chat with the bar staff about some of the drinks on offer. We've learned from experience not to order a starter as we can never manage a dessert so we went straight for the roasts. There was a bit of a wait for them to arrive but they were well worth waiting for, my belly pork was delicious & the beef & chicken were also pronounced excellent. Top roasties too!The chaps ordered a pud each & we asked for two extra spoons so we could share but were only allowed one mouthful!

We’ve lived locally for a long time and hadn’t eaten here before, there was a wide range of starters available, main choices were more limited and more pub grub style in choice but when the food came, it really was very good. The ribeyes were good quality, cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth, we would come again just for the steaks alone. The chocolate brownie with pistachio ice cream was a big hit aswell. The only suggestion I would make is if you don’t have a full restaurant, don’t seat people on top of one another as it’s nice to have some space to speak without hearing the next table, we asked to be moved to a more empty set of tables.Nice atmosphere with the fire, the French waiter was very Attentive and did a brilliant job. Would recommend for unfussy, decent quality food at a fair price

Pleasant enough pub in a nice location; staff were polite. The menu offered at the time of my visit was considerably smaller than the already smallish menu shown on the website. Disappointingly the pork belly, a favourite dish of mine and much enthused about by other correspondents, was not available so I opted instead for 'Half a roast chicken' at £14. The price may seem reasonable enough but what was actually delivered was just a chicken quarter, served with fries and salad. Perfectly pleasant and eatable, but this was more of the standard you would expect from a drinks led pub, which would charge around £7 to £9 for this dish. A so called gastro pub of this nature could and should do much better.

We just stumbled across this establishment this afternoon. It was early afternoon and quiet. They had a couple of decent hand pumped ales and a selection of reasonably priced wines. The menu was not huge but they said it changed twice daily and was all cooked on the premises. We went and sat in the sunny courtyard and our meals turned up, piping hot and delicious. We succumbed to their dessert menu, too. No tirimasu, cheesecake or profiteroles here. Clean plates, here, too!All in all, a true piece of serendipidity.

Had lunch here with a mate. The flavours were good, but only 3stars as I think it was a little pricey for the chicken (spicy Korean). I ordered it as a main course and got a big bowl of chicken wings but that was all (nothing else). Okay, but it was £17! I think that's a little too much and a bit misguided. It could have come with something. Or been slightly less. I ordered the wrong thing! I saw good food going to other tables. I am in no doubt that most would rate the food higher based on what I saw. I am, however, reviewing the food based on my experience and the chef should think about repricing the dish I had or doing more with it.

Having passed through Duns Tew several times with my bike friends, I eventually received some recommendations about trying this pub set in the middle of this quaint village, not far from the new Soho Farm House. And tonight seemed like the perfect night, boys at a sleepover, a Friday night after a stressful working week and no one waiting for us at home but a good lay in in the morning. We arrived at the pub through the back door and the bar was filled with posh locals, a very authentic pub with wood beams and a slight air of a London gastro pub. Got a drink at the bar counter from a decent wine list and then went to the table. After waiting for a good half hour to get greeted and get a menu, my wife decided to go to the bar and ask the landlord's girlfriend for attention. After placing our order, we eventually got olives that were removed half way. Then, the starters arrived and one of them was the wrong order. It was replaced after a while with apologies but at that stage I was ready to walk out. The waiter who was running the room by himself was one of the most useless waiters I have met in my life, arrogant and clueless. He would not have lasted an hour in my restaurant. Technically and emotionally useless, and a poor upbringing since he could not even say hello to us, let alone take our order. The only reason I did not remove the service charge from the bill is because of the three large glasses of red that helped me get through that evening. The mains were barely acceptable and deserts followed the same path. Decent pub food of average quality and nothing extra to get you excited. Service was so erratic but I actually found it funny after the first hour. My wife and I, coming from that industry, thought it was very entertaining once we accepted the fact that our expectations had to be reconsidered. A good pub for locals who have never been out the village, a good laugh for the rest of us who want to experience the English version of Faulty Towers.

I get to travel a fair bit with work and this offered one of the best efforts and quality food. I liked the fact that the menu gets printed just before service suggesting the changing nature of the kitchens stock and the mood of the chef. Although we had to wait 40 minutes or so at 6.30 pm for the menu to materialise.I had very fresh mussels for starter which were served in a tasty garlic white wine sauce accompanied with rusty slices of bread. The main course of belly pork was delightful (one might of liked a slightly bigger cut) but none the less the gravy brought the whole dish together nicely. The range of beverages were very good also, especially for someone who doesn't go the alcohol route.Must return again possibly even for client entertainment or a Sunday roast.

First things first - the pub was very busy on the Sunday before Christmas but to have to wait for over 15 minutes to be served at the bar is not really acceptable. There wasn't a queue of people waiting but the bar staff didn't seen to be able to cope with drinks orders from diners and fit in pulling a couple of pints and pouring a glass of wine. Oh, and if you want a glass of Shiraz you're out of luck, they only have it by the bottle!Anyway, after a slow start things picked up nicely, we sat on the fireside stools warming ourselves by the log fire and studying the menu, whilst waiting for a table. After a few minutes we were asked if we'd like the newly vacated table in front of the fire - the best possible place to be on a cold rainy afternoon! The table was cleared and our order taken quickly, with apologies for the wait. The food arrived in short order and very good it was too, succulent roast pork belly and a generous portion of ham egg and chips. Not the cheapest place in the area but certainly not the dearest either - and good quality food and service - apart from the initial wait at the bar!

From the moment you walk in Michael, Josh and his team make you feel very welcome. The beer, wine and especially the Cotswold gin are all top notch. We love the food as its freshly prepared with local ingredients and the menu changes regularly. We are definately going back for the locals night on the first Thursday of the month.

Just returned from lunch at the White Horse, and must comment on the excellent service and delectable roast beef. The claret we had with it was perfectly matched.

I'm not sure where to begin, as there are so many issues to raise.Bar under stocked - we were informed 'someone had drank the prossecco at the weekend', who was this person? I'd like to shake their hand for single handedly drinking the bar dry!The white wine we ordered on their wine list was also not available. So they gave us a more expensive bottle to compensate. One plus mark. Waitress not well versed with the menu, informed steak came with veggies (they didn't, in fact there was only chips and watercress); wasn't sure how the spelt was cooked or what it was in fact, very slow at getting drinks, meals, wine list etc because she was on her own serving a whole restaurant. The daily menu advertised salmon fish cakes but they weren't available. Two cold 'hot, firey, chicken wing' dishes which had to go back to be reheated. Plaice had not been gutted properly so I had some raw innards on my plate, nice.Over seasoned veg to the point of needing a gallon of water to wash the salt out of my mouth.Potatoes so over cooked that I also need a gallon of water to swallow them. .…and that was just my meal. Too tired and hungry to write about everyone else's. A little treat at the end was when an owners dog pooed next to our table! Owners fault? Yes, for not taking his dog out for a break! Managers fault? Yes, for allowing a dog off the lead to wander around the restaurant area! Manager took off the starters and drinks from the bill, but we should of left when the first problems arose and gone to the chippy.I thought that as it had changed hands again recently, they may have got things right! But it's a common theme with this place, AVOID, in my opinion.

The food here is really good now, A few years ago, under different owners, it wasn't that special, but the current proprietors are doing a great job and the meal I had was wonderful. The atmosphere is ok, but unfortunately I was alone and there weren't any locals in. As a place to have a quiet romantic meal with someone with whom you might like to also make conversation, this place is fantastic.Good wine list and plenty of gin choice too adds to the appeal!

My wife and daughter visited the White Horse a couple of weeks ago, during the week, and seemed to have had and enjoyable evening there with some good food. We therefore decided to invite some friends of ours to join us there for a meal on Saturday. Previous reviews of the food there seemed to suggested it was good so we were looking forward to a pleasant evening and some good food. The place was buzzing when we arrived and there was a good, lively atmosphere. We were shown to our table and presented with the menu. All looked interesting and we ordered three starters and four main courses. Unfortunately the waitress must have been new as she couldn't answer any of our questions about the menu and had to refer them back to another waitress. Starters were good. I had grilled aubergines and my wife had the chicken wings as did one of our friends. Then came the main courses! My wife ordered the crackling pork as did one of our friends and his wife ordered the mussels. I had the fish and chips. The pork was served as a "slab" on top of some mash and the cracking did not look particularly cracking! My wife put a slice of meat into her mouth and said it was tepid and did our friend. I cut into my fish to find that that was actually cold as were the fries and peas accompanying it. I couldn't eat the fish and chips and asked for it to be returned to the kitchen but my wife and our friend struggled on with the pork. Apparently the mussels were fine! So, a disappointing evening and we were somewhat embarrassed at having invited our friends to join us there. Three out of the fours meals ordered were not up to an acceptable standard! Was this a blip or should the pub be avoided on a Saturday night when the kitchen and staff and under pressure?

Visited with a friend, we wanted food and sight of a TV to watch the rugby. Very friendly bar staff and waitresses who accommodated us in the bar. Locals are a good bunch who made way for us.Fish and chips was excellent, good sized fresh portion that was served promptly. My mate reckoned the cheeseburger was one of the best he has had. So great to see this pub busy once again and well worth a visit.

I went here for lunch as part of a small business networking group recently and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. First the pub itself, which from the front presents a somewhat drab external appearance - this improves at the rear with its pretty outdoor seating area, complete with neat tables and chairs, and the newly established wire fencing with climbing plants trained upon it.Secondly, on entering the pub through the rear door, I was immediately struck by the low, beamed ceilings and the very small windows which necessitate the addition of lots of internal lighting. The interior furnishings of plain dark wood tables and chairs don't help with the light or with the overall ambience which comes over as being just a bit drab. The lunch however was far from drab - all three courses were delightful, although I think we had a special menu and I never got to see the standard menu offered to the public at large. Nevertheless, the chicken liver parfait starter was delicious with silky smooth parfait served along with onion marmalade on sourdough toast. This was followed by a succulent pan-seared fillet of salmon on cous cous with aubergines and yoghurt to accompany. We finished with panna cotta topped with a coulis of fresh strawberries, simple but very good. The vegetarian options served to a colleague at our table were also very good indeed.Service throughout was extremely swift, efficient and courteous. All in all, a very pleasant lunch. I will certainly be going back to sample their standard menu for dinner one evening.

We were on a flying visit with two young children - which is normally a nightmare but on this occasion a pleasure, as the White Horse Inn exceeded all our expectations and then some. We were given a lovely room with ample size for our family, with a travel cot. When we realised we would not arrive in time before the kitchen closed we were read the menu over the telephone so that we could pre-order our meals, which were then kept warm for us. Both the evening meals and breakfast were excellent - great selection, great kitchen, faultless service. Our only complaint is that we didn't stay longer! Thank you White Horse Inn.

Having read previous reviews we called in for a drink earlier in the week and immediately booked for lunch on Friday. The pub has a limited menu that can change between lunch and dinner. The ensures that all meals are cooked to order and with great care as were our excellent burgers cooked exactly as we wanted them in brioche buns. The food was complemented by the service provided by young Ellie whose poise and professionalism belie her age-she is a credit to the pub and herselfRichard and Ruth

I am vegetarian and thought Spelt was something you would give your rabbit, luckily the chef replaced this with Jersey Royals. The meal with asparagus, broad beans and peas was really tasty and the pudding (lemon curd, meringue and cherries) was refreshingly different. The menu is not extensive, but the restaurant is well attended.

Sundqy lunch menu.Roast Beef £16Fillet of Brill £16Lamb £16two starters.Waited 50 minutes for our food to arrive after ordering. Ordered extra drinks from the waitress, which were made by the barman and then left sitting in our view on the bar for at least ten minutes. The meat was good, beef rare as my husband likes it. However not quite sure what they'd done with the roast potatoes. They looked overdone and not a good colour. Personally I would not have let them leave the kitchen! The outside was almost to hard to bite through. They looked and tasted as if they'd been cooked, frozen, then cooked again, but for way to long, Being Father's Day my husband didn't want to make a fuss. The veg was minimal, would have been nice to be offered more if we wanted it. I had two starters for my main, prawns and a salad. Both good but expensive especially the salad. And extra touch of a side plate and a finger bowl is really necessary when serving messy prawns, neither of which where offered. Puds...the panaccota, delicious, the chocolate tart good but a tad bitter for me , the trifle...my husband seemed to enjoy it :). I had a latte, seven in a very old mug with a crack down the inside of it. The staff where great though, very friendly and polite. We will come once more to try the evening menu. But sadly the White Horse hasn't made it onto my sons website of recommended places to eat in Oxfordshire. Maybe next time. He really enjoyed his fish but it was expensive for what it was.

I arrived from Australia a few days ago and was keen to take in the sights of quaint English villages, and The White Horse Inn at Duns Tew didn’t disappoint. This ancient 17th century stone building with incredible large wooden beams had all the modern benefits. Large glass urns burning white candles adorned dark glossy wooden tables, looking stylish and homely. Hanging on the wall was an impressive set of cow horns that spread across a 1.5 metre span- with a plaque underneath declaring that these once belonged to Maisey (1862). The shiny flagstone floor of the wide room welcomed guests into the bar area. Often the measurement of a place can be judged by their toilets, and these proved to be exceptionably clean with plenty of sunshine and space. Folded hand towels completed the touch of luxury. And so we sat back and enjoyed a relaxed and very comfortable hour. Michael the chef and owner offered a tempting menu and we settled on the chicken liver pate with onion marmalade at £7.50 and traditional cheese burger at £12.50. Both dishes were well presented looking appetizing and tasting delicious. The warm crusty bread and beer battered fries complemented our pints of Ale and our Barmaid Laura delivered it all with friendly chatter, explaining that the field of poppies that had amazed us as we drove down the nearby country road was the result of the farmer “resting” the ground prior to replanting.Next time you’re travelling these country roads I recommend you drop in and enjoy the surroundings and food at the White Horse Inn, everything about it was inviting and pleasant, I’m looking forward to popping in again next week.

Village pub with friendly staff and average food. When I queried why there was no vegetarian option I was told it was deliberate. They don't encourage non meat eaters the owner is a beef man! They came up with the stock answer 'if you ask we can always do you something'. Not the point though, shouldn't have to ask..

We have visited this pub and had great meals in the past, however yesterday was a letdown. Three of us ate two of the meals were ok is it possible roast potatoes can be to crisp? Though the beef was lovely. Our friend had undercooked vegetables and a pork loin and full of gristle when we advise the waiter he apologised and simply took the food away on his return asked if we wanted desert. I presume the manager then appeared and apologised for the undercooked carrots that was the end of the conversation in the past we have sat around the fire on comfy chairs but they seem to have moved this now and put in more tables. We received the bill and there was no acknowledgement for the meal that wasn't eatien when we spoke to the manager he offered to not charge for the meal then told us we should've said something earlier we almost felt like naughty school children

Six of us dropped in by prior arrangement just before noon on a circular 50k bike ride on Easter Monday for bacon sandwiches and drinks. The bacon sandwiches were very ordinary on sliced untrimmed Mother's Pride type white bread. We were not offered brown bread or toasted sandwiches. They were served to us outside in a lovely sunlit setting by a perfectly pleasant waitress whose appearance was not helped by the fact that one of her big toes was sticking out of a hole in her tights. It just looked sloppy. The bill for 3 coffees, 2 lime and sodas (1 Large and ! Small) and a half of bitter with 5 bacon sandwiches and 1 Croissant came to £39.60. which was extremely poor value at £6.60 per head.Perhaps the chef was gearing himself up for the Easter Monday lunch crowd, but on this performance I certainly would not return to what otherwise appears to be a pleasant pub in a delightful village setting.Moral - keep up your standards all round because but for this particular experience we might all have been tempted to return on another occasion for a more substantial lunch or even dinner..

We had Sunday lunch for four adults and a six year old child at the White Horse pub in Isham village and we thought the quality of the food and the service were very good. At around £20 a head for a two course meal and soft drinks not bad in terms of value either. There was no separate menu for children (all the options on the adult menu are served with smaller portion sizes and slightly reduced cost). All the grown-ups ordered the beer battered fish with chips and peas and the child option was the cheeseburger with fries. Everything arrived pretty quickly and was cooked very well. The puddings were scrumptious, especially the chocolate brownies with ice cream. It's a dog friendly pub which was nice to see. Definitely somewhere that could become a regular place for family meals on a Sunday.

Had a meal with five friends. Food was pretty good, but the lady serving us forgot to serve mine, which I then had to request. Proseccos price of £25 and ordinary wine at £22 were too high compared with the good value food. Altogether rather disappointing.

Went here for an impromptu meal, was actually third choice, so expectations weren't high really, especially as some of the reviews weren't great. What a pleasant surprise. The new landlord (August 2014) has created a pub that is everything a gastropub should be; old world charm combined with modern facilities a varied menu and gorgeous tasting food. I really can't praise the food highly enough, the menu was limited but it was varied enough to give decent choice, but the quality of everything we ordered was what stands out in my mind. On top of it all the service was friendly and efficient. Looking forward to going there again. Will be recommending it to all my friends.

My husband, daughter and I were visiting friends for a week in Shipston and this place became our second home. The building is really lovely- traditional and with a very pretty bar which is really cozy... perfect for dogs, kids and anyone wanting a good chat and a great pint (fab selection of ales and lagers). We loved the sofa in the corner for playing cards. I imagine it's super lovely when the fire is lit in winter. It's the garden that we loved most though.. there's a natural wig wam tree thing with kids stuff in so perfect for little ones. Lots of tables with an uninterrupted view of the rolling hills. They don't 'do' food but have a wood fired pizza oven that comes once every month and it was amazing! I think they have a similar thing with local fish and chips too. We were also there on 'sharing night' when the locals all bring in stuff like cheese and home made bread to share on the bar. All in all, this was a fantastic pub with great staff, a beautiful garden and a really charming, cozy bar. We will be back!
