Bowling Green Steakhouse in Cherwell

On the way home went for a drink, smelt the food and decided to eat. They found us a table even though it was Sunday lunchtime. Wasn’t full but the food took a long time, nearly an hour which was a bit of a shame. The roast was good though! Enjoyed it.

The food was very delicious, the service was fast and kind, the Czech beer was cold, the room was comfortable and cozy, the toilet was modern and clean... I recommend it to everyone with great love!

Very nice small restaurant. We came there without booking on Sunday evening and staff found a table for us. I ordered lamb shank, which was perfectly tender with mash potatoes and vegetables. My wife took rib eye stake, which was the best that we had for a long time travelling around the country. Lovely chocolate brownies for desert. Definitely recommend!!!

Camembert for 2 was delish and is a generous serving. Highly recommended, we have this dish in South Africa and it is way better at The Bowling Green Ashbourne

Went for a date with my partner. On my booking I requested a seat preferably not near the door and got sat right next to it. The women who took our order and gave us our food there were a lot nicer compared to the male behind the bar-no friendly greeting. Once we got our food nobody checked up to ask if we were enjoying it - not very attentive considering it wasn’t busy. It just was slightly disappointing considering we had been there before a couple times and loved everything.

Came to Ashbourne for the Easter weekend and went to The Bowling Green on our first night. Would recommend reserving a table which we did as it is very popular. Great food, atmosphere and friendly attentive staff. Friday night Sirloin steak cooked to perfection so good we went Saturday evening where I chose fish and chips beautifully cooked crispy batter portion generous. Went again on Sunday and had their Sunday roast of pork with all the trimmings giant Yorkshire pudding and a jug full of delicious gravy what's not to like. Didn't have starters or deserts but from what I saw they all looked delicious I would highly recommend a visit.

Excellent service. Super friendly staff. No waiting. Probably the best food in Ashbourne. Would recommend The Bowling Green to anyone! We went for a selection of Starters (aka Tapas). Demolished the lot.

Pleasant staff. Ribeye steak was quite nice. Thought 'scoop' chips were a bit odd. Would've preferred normal thicker chips. Has a small carpark opposite for around 18-20 cars, which was handy but there is also space on the road. Went on a Wednesday at around 5pm and wasn't busy. Would eat here again. Must've been a pub in a previous life and still feels like a pub. Bill was about £60 for 2 mains with no extras and 2 soft drinks.

Absolutely gorgeous food friendly staff quick service, great choice of 0 alcoholic drinks for the unlucky driver or those who chose not to drink.

Food came out piping hot and was delicious, staff were very nice and friendly and made a couple of out of towners feel like locals. One of the best sit in meals we have had for a long time.

Was looking for somewhere we had never tried before that was local to Wirksworth. Took a chance with The Bowling Green after a recommendation from a family member, who managed to fit us in that evening. I had the 12oz ribeye, partner had the serloin. We both absolutely adored our meals, the ribeye was right up there as one of, if not the best steak I've had. Very very juicy and full of flavour. A surprise hit for both of us was the rocket side salad - the dressing was beautiful. Service was very good, and they went out of their way to accommodate us with a suitable table for our toddler and 9month old. Would 100% recommend, and am looking forward to going back to try the burgers which also looked fantastic as they were going out to the tables.

Food was ok with big portions. Nice atmosphere when eating. They had a kids menu and highchairs but no baby change!! Appalling to be honest. Had to change my 4 month old on the parcel shelf in my car!! Why an earth do you not have a suitable place to change babies??! Bathroom was filthy!! Poor hygiene. Would not return.

Staff really welcoming and helpful. Prices seem quite high at first but the portion sizes are massive! Food was really nice, high quality too. Highly recommend and will be returning

Great pub always constantly good food, lots of steak but my favourite is the Balmoral chicken.

Decided to go here after a hike. Ordered food and some beers, they were spot on. The food took a while which we were told, However they did misplace they order. They were quick enough to take this from our bill and the pizza was amazing! Great pub, great staff.

Stayed at the Stables next door June 2024 and are here. We really liked this place. Attached to our hotel and really good food, including awesome sticky toffee pudding!

We had a lovely lunch here. Since they sell themselves as a steakhouse, I thought I should try their fillet steak. It was perfectly tender! Nice recommendations from the staff for the sticky chilli beef as a starter too. A very friendly lady served us.

Fab evening, great food, fab service, great atmosphere.

We’ve chosen this place because of the reviews it had but I would not visit again. After seeing the mould on few places I was very doubtful about the general hygiene. If there’s nobody to take care of the very visible mould on public places how they are taking care of things which are out of our views? That’s a hypothetical question I have asked myself. We had burgers and you can judge for yourself from pictures - the fries were so far from potatoes that I couldn’t eat them. Buns - not even grilled. But I guess that that’s sufficient for some. We had 4 burgers, 5 beers, 1 tea and paid £92. The waitress was kind, friendly & courteous. Otherwise, a disappointment for me

Table booked for 3.30pm on Sunday.When sat down was informed it was a 40min wait for food and they ran out of beef. Food arrived nearly an hour later the food was cooked perfect apart from some dauphinoise potatoes that was cremated and the smallest dish possible.

Went here on a Sunday evening and had the best Roast dinner I've had in a restaurant for a while. Service by all staff was friendly and welcoming. The Roast dinner was exceptionally tasty and the beef was perfect.

Best customer service in England so far, never seen such well-mannered young staff working in a restaurant. Staff knew the menu very well, and the suggestions were amazing. The food was delicious and fresh. Portions are quite big. We requested a small candle for a birthday, something that is not on the menu. The waitress came with the cake singing happy birthday. How nice and lovely! Thank you to the management for having such a lovely team and a great chef!

Had to leave a review as the steaks we had tonight were the best me and my partner have had for a very long time. They were perfect! Very welcoming place and they were also great with my young daughter whose food was also great (fish and chips) Would highly recommend and will definitely return when we're next in the area.

The food was excellent. One of the best steaks I've had in years. However 2.5 hours for a 2 course meal just isn't good enough. The staff apologised for the delay but I'm afraid by then it was too late. To leave at 9pm from a 6.30 booking isn't acceptable.

You must try the black pudding and haggis stack. Amazing

Our first night in the peaks, what a great meal to start the trip! I had the lamb shoulder whilst my partner had the pie, both extremely delicious big portions, the meals were of high quality and great value for money we highly recommend this place 👌 Edit; So good we visited on our last night also we had the beef brisket and lamb both so so tasty,.the brisket and horseradish was our absolute favourite!

If I could give more I will, food fantastic, fresh, tasty and amount of is more then you can eat 😄! Staff friendly, place nice, clean and cozy. Looking forward to make one hour trip to see you guys and try something new !

Great restaurant, complete menu with varied and typical dishes. Lots of sweet/savory dishes (yum), very good sauce dishes (the sauces are excellent), the meat is very good and cooked well, the side dishes and vegetables are in generous quantities and are delicious (the mushrooms with 'garlic !!) The portions are really big. We went there twice and it was perfect both times. There is also a very nice bar area. The staff are lovely and very attentive, the service is impeccable. Thank you so much !

Staying locally on holiday, and the bowling green was highly recommended,on visiting it we were seved food which is second to none, can not praise Amy and her staff enough for fitting us in at short notice and the friendly service we received, top marks to the chef. Very busy Steakhouse when we went on a saturday night but food, when it arrived, was worth the wait and we received a discount on the bill by way of apology for the long wait.

Best pub food I’ve in had in many a year. Great menu, great food and very good service. No wonder it took us a couple of attempts to get a booking. Returned for breakfast the next day, amazing breakfast.

Traditional pub with a steady flow of visitors. We came for Sunday lunch and sat in the bar area - which had the football on quietly in the background - as we had a dog with us. Food was fantastic but be prepared for a long wait - even the deserts took over 30minutes! Still, the food is tasty, well presented and well priced and all the staff were pleasant.

Went for Sunday lunch and were very impressed with the food and service. Shared a starter of ham terrine which was excellent, but then made finishing the roast beef and pork a challenge 😂 Portions are huge and everything is cooked and seasoned well. The meat was well prepared and the idea of a jug of gravy each was very welcome. Would love to go back for both a dessert (no room) and to try the rest of the menu. A big thanks to the very warm and professional staff.

Our go to place for any celebration. I sometimes request something that isn’t on the menu and Ross always does it for me as it’s my fave meal. I’ve had many and he certainly makes the best! Lovely staff too. Always attentive and polite. Love the place!

The place is ok its the food £30 for a 15oz rump steak chips and a bit of salad no mushrooms or tomatoes very poor

The staff were great and found us a table when we phoned… we arrived 30 minutes before the time we’d book the table for, to find it was free and ready. Menu given, drinks ordered, excellent selection of food, can’t fault it. Food was plentiful and very tasty, recommend the Haggis and Black chips, super side. Mains and dessert (cheesecake) were great; very happy with the visit. Parking on site opposite the pub, and some spaces down the main road.

This place is a little gem. Booked short notice for an evening meal (20:45) and they were able to fit us in. The staff were very friendly and clearly appreciated regulars as well as new guests, the venue is clean, tidy and well decorated. The menu had some great dishes with unique twists (I had the Pizza/chicken burger) such as the haggis and chips (cheese too). Desserts were outstanding also. Highly recommended.

Very disappointed to see the bowling green have changed their menu, the sides have all been changed IMO for the worse, the lovely prawns are no longer available as a side, and you no longer get the onion rings, mushroom, or tomato with your steak, you now get more green leaf salad, with a Parmesan topping not my choice to go with a steak, but they tell me it’s popular, we used to go here regularly as a family of 4 adults, or just myself and my wife, I don’t honestly think we will be using it anymore which is sad, as we have been eating here for many years. Sometimes change is not always the best option.

We booked this based on the reviews we'd read and we were not disappointed. Its a bit of a walk uphill if you're walking up from Ashbourne town but its well worth the walk. This pub is a really friendly, I'd say oldy-worldly (on the inside), very dog friendly in the bar (and they have a nice restaurant area too). Very friendly locals and exceptional bar / food staff. They came to our table to take drinks orders, then food orders and made sure we were topped up with drinks all evening (which was great!) Food wise, we had the pork belly bites (which was the absolutely winner), we also had the ribs and a braised beef with mash. All of the food was very good and we would certainly come back here again.

Bowling Green for me is easily the best restaurant in Ashbourne! Eaten here many at dinner but this was the first time trying the breakfast menu out and it most certainly delivered! It really has something for everyone - full English, full Scottish, Vegetarian and American style pancakes. Food quality was outstanding and service was lovely and friendly as always.

Simple advice, get the brisket! I didn't, I got the rib eye, my wife got the brisket and could only manage half of it. So I got the rest and it was superb!

Fantastic food and service was excellent, came for my husband's birthday,starter was delicious, mushroom in creamy cheese and beer sauce was huge could have as a main, was so tasty, centre cut fillet steak was cooked to perfection.

Found on google for a stop off for food on the way home from a lovely day at Dovedale. Waited 30minutes for them to take our order, then another 40 minutes passed and still no food. On asking the waiter (who appeared scruffy) was greeted with attitude fuelled comments such as - we are not McDonalds and no idea how much longer the food would take. Such a shame as we were looking forward to dining here.

Worst Breakfast we have ever had... The bacon was so burnt it wasn't fit to eat, the sausage wasn't much better ... The pancakes my son had was covered in that much chocolate spread he would of been ill if he had eaten it... wouldn't recommend. But the young girls serving were very polite.

We found this location on Trip Advisor and since we were in the area we decided to stop by for an early dinner on a Sunday. The venue was quite busy and seating was at a premium but we ordered at the bar and food arrived in good time. The staff were all very polite and personable. The bar had a good selection of drinks. I had a Surf n Turf pizza with scoop chips (chips shaped like scoops, not a scoop of chips, as I initially thought) and my wife had soup. We were both very pleased with our choices although I could see my wife was jealous at the king prawns on my pizza. Would definitely visit again.

My partner and I have just eaten the most succulent, tasty and incredibly yummy rump steak. 15oz medium to rare and 10oz well done superb. Superb service. Will definitely reccomend.

Went here for our anniversary meal out and it did not disappoint. From the minute we walked in the staff were absolutely outstanding and couldn't do enough for us. They were all extremely friendly, efficient and professional. We had a right laugh with them about something that would take too long to explain, they were brilliant. The food was also exceptional. We had the sticky beef to share to start with, then I had the steak and blue cheese pizza, the wife had the surf and turf pizza and I portion of scoop fries to share, it was all fantastic. Credit to the staff, chefs and management for running a fantastic pub / restaurant.

Total shambles. In for a quick breakfast that took way too long and was undercooked. Never going back.
