As we were staying at a B&B in the village we decided to book an evening meal after reading the excellent reviews and I have to say we were really disappointed. We were shown to a table in the dining room of which there was one other table of four guests .We were treated to a floor show of the waiter laughing and joking with them very loudly . My husband had the sticky chicken off the man menu of which he said the chicken was tough.I had the braised pork belly off the specials board and once again this was dry and very tough . My husband had ice cream for dessert which was fine.I had the warm chocolate brownie which was overcooked and crispy in places .As we don’t like to make a fuss we paid the bill and left but needless to say didn’t return the following evening .

Absolutely fabulous lunch here - soup was amazing as were the cheese and onion sandwich and the chicken, bacon and mayonnaise sandwich - we shared a side of skinny fries. Fabulous fresh food and great service. Beautiful characterful old pub.

A delightful pub with delicious food and very accommodating staff. We showed up as a rather large party (5 adults, 2 children), and were still seated quickly. They were very kind about seeing to our special requests about the food, and everything was fantastic. Would definitely recommend stopping after visiting the Beatrix Potter house or after a long hike!

Staying just down the road on the Greythwaite estate, we stumbled across the Tower Bank Arms one Sunday afternoon. We sat outside as a family group drinking well kept beer, eating outstanding French Fries and looking at the views over the fields. Both the Landlord and the other, clearly local, customers were very friendly and welcoming and I can honestly say I’ve rarely spent a more enjoyable afternoon in a pub. We considered staying an extra night at the cottage just so we could visit the Tower Bank Arms for dinner but sadly had to head home. I can’t believe that the information pack at the cottage didn’t mention this local gem and I’m so glad we found it by accident. If you’re in the area, pay a visit.

Booked for dinner through a friend, who we met there. Before we even got through the door, asked who we were and said your're not booked in. Said ok, don't worry, did not want to embarrass friend,as she had made the booking, and was going to leave. His reply, - I'm not worried, and won't be happy if you are lying( !!).He went back in pub, came back out, and said he could get us in. Shame really as now night spoiled. Went to our table, only 2 places laid (3 of us) reply 2 of you on there, one on another table. Went to push 2 tables together, reply, you're not doing that, takes up too much room. Perhaps now it's my turn to be ignorant, but I did not know 2 tables pushed together takes up more room than 2 single tables ?. So now friend and wife on 1 table and Billy no Mates on another asked for a certain meal and asked what the meal consisted of. His answer, if you had read the specials board properly, you know what it comes with. Was merely trying to say to leave certain items off so they are not left and wasted. Reply, can leave off what you want, but will still charge you full amount. Was not trying to get a discount just trying to not waste food.could go on forever, food OK, eton mess for pud was not eton mess. This barman (name known, but he knows who he is) is an embarrassment to the pub. We live local and support local businesses every week, but untill this mo&on is sacked, will not go back. Pubs, in general are struggling, with this clown behind the bar, people will not go back. If you do not believe me, just read further reviews. Perhaps this barman would be more suited working in a joke shop where he could play all day with his plastic spider.

A thrice of baldies. Dinner booked. Friday night. We each had three corses from the specials menu (black pudding with crispy bacon and a lovely mustard and cream sauce; the Lakeland lamb with greens and mashed potato and the local cheeseboard, and as we were eating and drinking like Henry VIII, we greedily split a STP. We also each had three pints. The welcome and dinner service was great. The food was superb. Particularly noteworthy was the lamb, the cheese and the STP. We could not have been more happy as well as well-fed. Look at my pics, seeing is believing. The bill was very reasonable. We will be back!

Unwelcoming and extremely ill mannered barman. I note his behaviour has been noted by other guests in the past. I was told in a very rude way that food service finished at 2pm and drinks served till 3pm. Such a shame as the Inn has enormous potential. Definitely the seating is poor. There are other pubs quite close who will give you a warm welcome. We have had lunch there in the past many times and popped in for the odd pint or two. However we will give it a miss in future.

We had booked this pub for our first meal at the Lake District. We were a little late as had such a hard drive up but they were so welcoming. The pub had a very nice friendly and lively atmosphere. The menu was delicious and we didn’t know what to choose. Luckily a nice waiter recommended some specials which helped make our decision. The chicken, ham and leek pie was AMAZING and The Beef short rib was some kind of wonderful. Service and food was quick and great. We found space to have a sticky toffee pudding which was one of the best we’d ever had! Highly recommend

A group of friends visited the Tower Bank Arms on Fri 22nd having just arrived at our cottage for the weekend. We booked said cottage for the pub as previously I've been and I loved how friendly and cosy it was. When we got there we saw a poster on the wall for a charity quiz night. We surmised it was about to get busy but wasn't advised by bar staff regarding this or invited to partake. The service we then received was rather cold and rude. We got a round of drinks and sat at a table which was free with no reserved on it. The bar staff then came at 7:55 to tell us to leave the table in 5 mins as it was needed. We still had more than half of our drinks left. We finished and left. We didn't return and I won't return again. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. All this could have been avoided if the bar staff was just to engage in a conversation when we entered about the quiz night and what to expect. Never felt as unwelcome.

This pub was walkable when we stayed in Cumbria for a week. It's great during the day, you can call in for a drink at anytime. Also don't need to book for food at lunchtime, but if you're staying in the area and fancy a pint in the local in the evening, this isn't possible here. This is because every single table in the restaurant and pub are booked for evening meals. And they are booked up every evening. We called in for a drink one tea time and were told we had to leave in half an hour as they were fully booked. (We were also unable to book a table to eat as they were fully booked..so unable to comment on food). However staff were freindly enough and on a good day you can sit in the beer garden.

Now I’m sure the food at this place is good, as it had reservations every night we visited, however, the most frustrating thing is that it doesn’t know if it is a pub or restaurant. You enter the bar, and other than a couple of bar stools at the bar, every table was reserved. I thought a pub that did food was just that. Not here. You MUST reserve or go elsewhere. As it’s quite small you then end up in the beer garden, which is unkempt and overgrown. Disappointing.

We were welcomed by a very friendly 'Mine Host' and offered a table for the four of us and given a menu. None of us were really hungry so we all chose the soup with fresh bread. A great choice, it was delicious. We were served by a young New Zealand lady who is working there during her 'Travelling Gap Year'. Good atmosphere, good service and very friendly. Well worth a visit.

We turned up at the pub on our first night just before 8, we arrived in the dark and needed something to eat. Myself my husband two boys and dog. We went to the pub which was busy and couldn’t find a seat, we were just about to leave when friendly staff said if we waited a few minutes a table was about to become available. The food was beautiful, the staff were lovely and my boys and dog were made very welcome. We will definitely be back no doubt more then once before the end of our stay.

We stayed here with our in laws in December, and the food was exceptional throughout the stay. We have stayed here numerous times now, and have never had a bad meal. The food is good honest country pub food. A small menu, of local produce that is superbly cooked and a warm and welcoming service. Can not recommend this place enough.

Visited here many times over the years whilst on holiday. We love the atmosphere, the fact there’s no TV or music. The window seat has fabulous views or sit by the fire to warm up & relax listening to the soothing cracking sounds. Food is always good, proper pub food cooked well. The pub also allows dogs.

Dropped in on the off chance when staying up the road. Rustic charm with open fire roaring. Food was delicious with the pate being the best I've had, staff friendly too.

First in the door on a wet and windy day, so all 6 of us sat in front of the lovely open fire.

We have had many memorable evenings in this establishment when it was considered a real pub! Our first visit around 22 yrs ago. We took the opportunity to visit again after some years whilst staying at the well appointed Sawrey House Hotel . We arrived around 17.20 for a few pre drinks before heading back to our hotel for our evening meal. On entering we found all of the tables were reserved. We were not encouraged to sit in the bar to enjoy our drinks. We were offered an alternative a dark ,dingy back room with limited lighting and no heating.! We asked if we could take a seat at one of the tables and would willingly vacate the table if the guests arrived. We were constantly monitored by a rude female member of staff which made us feel extremely uncomfortable. We found this extremely unprofessional and intimidating!

Very nice pub. Bedroom was a little cramped but the food was excellent and prices very reasonable. We preferred to ear our meals in the cosy bar area rather than the dining room which was a little chilly at the time of our visit.

We ate here on a Saturday night, and it was great. The staff were very friendly. Although the menu was quite small the quality was excellent and well presented. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the atmosphere of the Mortal Man

Called today what must have been the busiest day ever. Had to queue for ages but the coffee tea cakes and flapjack perfect. My reason for five stars were for the young lady behind the counter working alone and so hard (others working behind the scenes preparing and serving orders ) but she smiled and was so courteous she deserved a medal. Only downside at 2.30 running out of items such as scones bacon sandwiches etc but maybe they did not expect the number of customers . Well done

Came in to see a friend and left with a warm contented feeling, the place is warm and cozy and very friendly, but spacious enough to not be overbearing. The food is excellent and it has to be the best burger on the island hands down, it’s huge, full of flavour and seriously tasty, highly recommend the village inn

One of the best pub Sunday lunches we've had in several years. The meat was succulent - and if you can't choose beef or port you can have half and half. The potatoes were crunchily roasted with soft interior. The Yorkshire puddings seemed a step above most pub versions being neither greasy nor, like so many places, perfect roundels straight from a freezer. There wasn't much green veg but the kale - normally not something I like - was salty and well prepared. Great with the beautifully prepared red cabbage. Big shared portion of cauliflower cheese included too, and - on request - extra gravy and really tangy horseradish. Frankly not much to criticise here and the desserts were brilliant too. We had heard someone say that the change of ownership a week or so back had caused a drop in standards but it's hard to believe that it was ever much better than this. Highly recommended.
