Plough and Barleycorn in Isle of Wight

As always a very warm welcome. No children which suits us nuts dog’s welcome. We lost our dog but have booked to go back with a new dog. Look forward to seeing them. The decorations are always done the toilets are excellent ( ladies).

We have been coming here with the dog and always very welcome. We don’t have the dog but was welcomed and the fire was going barman has been here for a long time. Very clean very tidy inside and outside would recommend.

Didn't have any food hence no stars. Landlord very convivial, local people welcoming, chatty and friendly. A nice proper pub 🙂🙂🙂

Not particularly welcoming to tourists (grockles) regulars sat round the bar reluctant to allow you to in to be served. On the plus side very clean toilet

One of the best value pubs on the island and one of my fairly regular 'watering holes'. Close to the town centre, it is easy enough to find, opposite the town Conservative Club. I am a keen walker and regularly walk the old railway track from Ventnor to Shanklin. I use The Plough and Barleycorn as a convenient stop-off before wending my way back home. I have never experienced anything but pleasant staff there, so am surprised to read any negative comments. In fact Gavin is nearly always behind the bar whenever I visit and he's a great bloke. The pub does not serve food, it is much more of a traditional town pub, serving drinks and 'packet snacks', so if you are looking for lunch, this is not for you.

No food available but excellent bar service and all area's clean.

Pop in their every now and then especially when friends come over, a great selection of Beer and Lagers and the atmosphere is always good in there. The toilets are spotless just like the rest of the pub, a nice decking area outside in the summer or warm days and Evenings

There was Ringwood Forty Niner and Fullers London Pride on hand pull, Fosters, Heineken, Red Stripe and other lagers on tap plus draught cider including Inch's Gavin the landlord has owned the P&B eight years now. During this time he's sympathetically restored this beautiful building with the toilets receiving the most recent upgrade.

A proper 'town pub' with excellent value beverage prices. I have visited several times when in the area, and on each occasion found it to have a very friendly atmosphere, with plenty of locals in attendance. Top marks for the publican, who on my last visit noticed that one of the beers on my table was cloudy. He walked over to the table, said 'I'm not happy with that' and replaced it with one he had poured from a new barrel that he had just tapped. That kind of diligence and customer service is exceptional and should be commended. Pub was clean and was very comfortable on what was a cold day, due to the open fire. Your family pet will be welcomed too. Please note: The Plough and Barleycorn does not serve food.

Spotless pub and friendly Bar man

Lovely pub, awesome staff just a shame the women's loos (as I've been told) are nice but the mens are awful! 5 star review when the mens loos are sorted!

What a lovely pub! We're ashamed that we've overlooked it up to now. Friendly Landlord and nice welcome. Very competitively priced drinks. Unbelievably neat, tidy, and spotlessly clean. The décor is just lovely. Super comfy sofas set around a cosy log burner, or comfortable chairs around tables.

Very nice service, however the pub seemed empty, not much furniture around and only a few regulars sitting by the bar. Some decent music in the background, overall a good experience.

My first ever visit to this pub. Went for a work leaving do on a weekday so quiet but friendly. Taught my friend to play pool for the first time. Drinks all good. They don't do food but they kindly allowed us to eat our takeaway burgers & chips from Rios (bogof on Tuesdays) outside on the picnic benches with our drinks- happy days. Bathroom was beautifully tiled & clean. Nice hooks behind the doors to hang your bag to keep it hygienic.

This may well have been a nice place - we will never know. The bar person (female) was so rude that we left and went somewhere else instead. This person really should not be working in hospitality. We would recommend this place to absolutely no-one.

What an absolute grumpy are sole. Kids are banned from the property and the geezer behind the bar couldn't have been any more unwelcoming. Wouldn't give them my money, hope they go under Edit No mate you were rude from the off. First thing we asked was are you serving food.to which you replied she can't come in here and no were not doing food. Do you get many problems coming to your pub with no money? No I don't suppose you do as you wouldn't go for a meal if you didn't have any money. The fact that you are being argumentative speaks volumes . We walked for another 5 minutes and found a lovely spot that served the best fish platter I have had on the island yet. I fully recommend walking straight past this place amd into any other establishment for a warm welcome. I never give anyone a bad review unless they truly deserve it. Maybe look through my many reviews and see for yourself. Good luck in finding some manners, you need them

Decent pint, nice barman and comfortable pub.

Didn't feel welcome at all. We were met at the door by a gruff scruffy member of staff who demanded we moved our bikes in a very rude and abrupt way (that really weren't in the way at all on the wide path) It was very quiet so, it seemed unnecessary, especially in such an aggressive manor. Needless to say, we took our business elsewhere, their loss!

Anyone thinking of going into this pub when you are not a local don't bother because they are so rude in there I don't have to wear a mask my mum had one on and he told us to leave and was really rude we find a great pub welcome us in did track and trace was talking to me and my mum the locals was talking they put music on we had a great night in there and we will be back in this week told us a drink is on the house because of the bad experience we had in this pub so thank you for being rude because we have find a lovely pub thank you THE TOWNHOUSE PUB

Came in here everyday of our break. Great pub, superb landlord and locals. We were made to feel at home, drinks are very fairly priced, spotlessly clean. The only downside I can see is when you sit in the leather sofas you just want to stay drinking there. (you've been warned 😊). If you like a proper pub this is for you, will always call in whenever we are in Shanklin again.

Sat outside for a couple of post walk drinks, Covid secure and service was fine. We didn't eat here as we had a table booked elsewhere, drinks were standard and the young lady who was waitressing was pleasant

Attempted to visit today for lunch. I was met with the most discrimination I have ever experienced throughout this pandemic, anywhere in the country. I was greeted by an unmasked member of staff who bluntly said, no mask, no entry. I explained that I’d been hospitalised with two collapsed lungs in recent years and I really struggled to wear one, and am therefore exempt! I would have been more than willing to sit outside but, was horrified by the lack of consideration given to me, especially considering I watched the gentleman walk through the pub unmasked himself. I was horrified to experience such hypocrisy and lack of empathy from this establishment. I certainly do not recommend!!

We arrived in Shanklin on a Saturday night and not knowing the area headed for the tourist pubs in the old village, after being turned away from all of them (apparently all full!) we had seen the Plough on our drive in. Well this was our gain, if you want a good pint in a friendly proper pub this the place to go. They made a couple of Northern people feel very welcome and civid safe our only regret was that we wasted time trying all the others so that we missed out having more than a couple of beers. We loved the place so much we visited for the next two nights of our stay and would be our first point of call on a return visit. Proper pub with real people would recommend this to anyone.

A local's pub but don't let that put you off. Very friendly, warm fire & the one real ale, Courage Directors, was in excellent condition.

We called in here for a drink or too on a few occasions while staying in Shanklin. Clearly following covid regulations, very friendly.

So we turned up at this pub the tables inside were full there was 3 tables outside empty to which we were told we couldn’t sit outside because it was raining surely this should of been our choice !! Because In actual fact it wasn’t raining as you can see by the picture!!! Quite possible the worse service we have received ever!!

First pub in Isle of Wight I have visited for a year with all the problems we have had as we live on the mainland. I was impressed at the excellent way they handled the correct and safe way of coming in and enjoying. Despite the restrictions still provided a friendly approach. Nice to feel safe and enable one to get some life.

Warm friendly pub, and well worth a visit if you are visiting Shanklin.Gav the landlord and the locals made us and our two border collies feel very welcome especially the dog treats.The venue is clean and comfortable and tastefully decorated and dog friendly. Please note that this is an adult pub only and children under the age of 18 are not permitted. There was a good selection of beers and lagers with very reasonable price. Please also note that this venue does not serve food.If your visiting Shanklin it is well worth a visit.

Stopped here two evenings on our way back to our hotel just for a quick drink. More of a locals pub but we were made to feel welcome.

The service and hospitality by the barman/owner was second to none. Might seem like a locals local but we were made to feel very welcome.

If you want loud music, games machines or sports TV then then this is not the place for you. If, on the other hand, you like real ales and good wine in a convivial atmosphere then you can’t go wrong choosing this free house pub for a drink or two. The drinks are a reasonable price as well We will be back.

My wife and I were looking for somewhere interesting to have a post-lunch beverage after our morning walk and as usual I searched Tripadvisor for inspiration. I came across this pub in the reviews and was highly entertained by the owner's response to some of the comments, so we gave it a try. The pub wasn't very full at that time and we were able to bag the best seat in the place - a comfy sofa near the fireplace - and had a couple of pints of well-kept ale. I mentioned the review responses to the landlord/owner and he turned out to be just as interesting and friendly as we hoped. The pub seems to have been recently re-decorated and the result was a lovely cosy pub serving great beer. The other people in the pub (local regulars I think) were also friendly and welcoming. Overall a very enjoyable visit.

No dart board. We went in there as it said there was one.. but never the less we had a nice chilled out drink. And the baseman was pleasent

It is the landlord (lady('s choice who they attract and I think they have got it worng here. The beer was not the best either. Won't be back

Visited this pub in a group of three couples. It's beautifully fitted out and clean. Unfortunately the clientele gathered on stools around the bar were hostile and aggressive as soon as we walked in. Such a shame as this shortened our visit and must lose this pub a lot of business.

Good prices compared to other pubs

I said I’d be writing a review and here it is! We popped in on our tour of shanklin pubs on Saturday and had a lovely quiet drink and a chat with the landlord who has a real knowledge and love of the area and what he does. We learnt lots of information and tips of where to go from him and a bit about the building and it’s history (and ghost!) lovely place. Will be back again keep up the good work (and get strongbow original on tap- it’s the best!) Ria and Ryan x

We had visited this nice comfortable pub last year when we were offered a good choice, albeit only 3 pumps, of ale. This year the choice of ales, whilst still 3 pumps, appeared to have been dumbed down. With so much good ale around these days we were a little disappointed.

Dropped in for a beer on a lovely summer day. Had a couple! Good ,quick friendly service with the minimum of fuss. Well finished decor, clean and tidy. Very good .
