I decided to book the doggy afternoon tea for myself and husband plus our bouncy border collie. Bit nervous as she loves people and does get very giddy. But it was amazing! Thanks to the kind and friendly staff. Especially Dan who gave our dog lots of fun. The sandwich were lovely just a bit dry however it was a hot day. The cakes were my favourite with the hot scones. The dog had a plate of treats which kept her busy and also Dan came over with little treats and she performed her tricks for him. When we got home she slept for ages! It was definitely a fun day out for our dog. It was lovely weather so we asked if we could sit outside and it was no trouble at all. The was garden peaceful and we enjoyed watching the fountain and relaxing. Don't expect cheap! but it's well worth it for the selection and service. We upgraded to the champagne and loved it so much we had two glasses of champagne. A great selections of tea too and I went for chocolate tea!

We live close by and love to treat ourselves to a meal at Rookery, it’s not cheap however you absolutely get what you pay for. After enjoying an aperitif in the garden, we were seated at a fabulous window table. Our food was fabulous: delicious mackerel to start followed by Halibut and a succulent steak, accompanied by peas with pancetta and incredibly moreish rosti potatoes. We shared a selection of 3 cheeses to finish: Cashel blue, mature cheddar and a delectable brie coated in nettles. All an absolute treat for the tastebuds. The waiters/waitresses were delightful, especially Morgan who is an absolute credit to this fine establishment. Our next visit is already booked and I can’t wait to return. Highly recommended especially if you are local.

We had dinner here as part of a main package at the hotel for my husband’s birthday. The waiting staff were so lovely, polite and helpful. As we went into the dining room for dinner, the staff wished my husband a happy birthday, and brought us a complimentary glass of Prosecco to celebrate. We had the menu explained to use in detail and decided to go with the chefs experience menu. I cannot put into words how delicious this was. It started with chefs snack, followed by a pea soup and sourdough, then salmon, then lamb which might I add was out of this world and the best thing I have ever tasted, then a sorbet and lastly the rhubarb cheesecake for dessert. Each dish that was brought out to us was throughly explained in detail. The waiting time between each dish was perfect.

(Actually not the restaurant but a bar snack.) OK I am biased. We had our wedding meal there 26 years ago, and returned for an anniversary lunch. But that doesn’t affect our opinion. The cauliflower and cider apple soup was possibly the best soup I have ever tasted. (I am 76). More to the point is that, the much better half, thought the same. Then a Lobster Pizza to share. We have never had a lobster pizza before. It was worthy of a celebration. We had a quietly romantic, celebratory, quality time in a corner of the bar, which we found perfect. Then the lovely waitress brought out a plate with ‘Happy Birthday’ on it with a couple of chocolates. We shall be back.

My partner and I dined here yesterday evening, with some friends, to celebrate a 75th birthday. From the moment we arrived we were warmly welcomed and looked after by the truly excellent Dan, Eva and Ollie. The staff really made our evening and added to a memorable experience. I should also mention the food which was outstanding! We all enjoyed our meals which were perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Thank you so much!

My wife and I dined at Rookery Hall and enjoyed one of the best Sunday lunches we have had in a long time. We were met by members of the Front of House Team and escorted to the restaurant, where Helen gave us a wonderful friendly welcome and showed us to our table, which as always was spotlessly clean and beautifully presented with immaculate cutlery, glassware and fresh flowers. Once settled we were given menus, which Helen explained the contents of and took our wine and water order. The restaurant at Rookery Hall is an impressive room looking out onto the pretty formal gardens and patio dining areas - this is a really grand but homely hotel and the excellent staff team enhance its feel of welcoming elegance and charm. The menu contained a good selection of options and we particularly liked our creamy smooth chicken liver parfait and salmon and crab starters, which clearly showed a lot of effort had gone not only into the quality of the food but also its presentation. For our main courses we both chose pork which was excellent and tasted superb, accompanied by a nice selection of vegetables - all cooked to perfection. To finish we had a cheese selection and a rhubarb panna cotta, which were fabulous. The kitchen brigade who prepared and cooked this lovely meal deserve every credit for their skilled hard work behind the scenes - it was simply outstanding in every way backed up by the professionalism of Helen, Josh and the other team members on duty at the hotel, that day. Our meal was not only delicious and tasty it was also excellent value for money - 10/10 to everyone at Rookery Hall - thankyou all so much!

My wife and I chose to have a pre-Christmas Sunday lunch and returned to Rookery Hall. As always Rookery Hall is an amazing customer experience and we were not disappointed in any way with our latest visit. As soon as you turn into the impressive driveway you are reminded that this is no ordinary property. Rookery Hall was beautifully decorated for the Christmas season and its impressive rooms were both welcoming and immaculate. We ate from the Sunday Lunch menu and enjoyed three fabulous, tasty courses which were cooked, presented and served to perfection in the elegant wood panelled dining room. We were looked after by Helen and Morgan, both of who's menu knowledge, professionalism and customer skills service skills were outstanding. Without doubt, this is what quality looks, feels and tastes like!

My friend and I booked the Rookery restaurant to experience the new tapas menu advertised in the local newspaper but on arrival were told there was a fault with the kitchen facilities from a fire alarm the night before so a very limited menu was available. I asked why we were not contacted prior to arrival to explain the changes. We also discovered that the fire alarm was from at least 24 hours earlier and no credibile explanation was given. We couldn't find anything to eat for dinner on the menu. Mainly consisted of sandwiches, only three main meals and salads. We left feeling very hard done by. So disappointing.

The Rookery was a very good choice for our two day business event and provided a very comfortable overnight stay in between. The main event room was very spacious and well equipped for the days' business and doubled as a function room for our evening meal. This had originally been planned as a BBQ on the terrace directly outsidethe room, but the weather meant this had to be transferred indoors. Nevertheless the burgers and wurst sausages were probably the best I have tasted at a BBQ. In between all that we enjoyed lunch and breakfast in the main dining room, all of which was very good. The pool looked great, but I didn't get chance to use if this time. I did manage to use the well equipped gym before breakfast on day two. Staff were all very welcoming, courteous and attentive. No doubt The Rookery would be also bea good venue for other social and family events, or just a place to get away for a couple of days.

We had been for lunch here many, many years back (of which I had no memory) but this was the first time for dinner. The dining room is lovely. Lots of dark wood panelling entirely in keeping with a Georgian building. Great views of the countryside through floor to ceiling windows – with an almost equally large mirror at the other end, giving it an impression that it is even more spacious than it actually is. We were staying overnight at the hotel and could have taken advantage of its dinner bed & breakfast deal but that would have meant taking the tasting menu, which didn’t suit us. So, we’d booked B & B and reserved the restaurant separately so we could eat the “a la carte”. It was going to be a very mixed meal. As you might expect, there was an amuse bouche in the form of a mushroom velouté – a pleasant enough consistency but underflavoured and underseasoned. I got “seconds” as my partner had a couple of spoonfuls and didn’t fancy finishing it. Yes, I’m the greedy one of the pair. Chicken terrine was also underwhelming as a starter. Basically, cooked chicken shredded and pressed back together again. It came with an egg yolk puree and a couple of bits of charred sweetcorn which did their best to try and lift it. Much better was a fillet of grilled plaice. That came with a lovely langoustine tail. And some Jerusalem artichoke served, perhaps a bit oddly, cold as a salad item with watercress. Really giving it a zing were some thin slices of a pickled vegetable. Perhaps more artichoke? Then it was on to main courses. It took a while for them to arrive. In fact, it had taken a while for everything. By now, getting on for 75 minutes had passed since we sat down. The problem, whatever it was, was clearly in the kitchen, rather than with the serving staff. But it was the sort of slow, that sucks the enjoyment out of a meal. Unlike the earlier dishes, a ribeye steak was well seasoned and accurately cooked as requested. It came with good chips, some chunks of parsnip and a nasturtium pesto, acting as a sauce. On the other plate, there was an excellent bit of cookery with some pork loin – well flavoured and nicely cooked to medium. It came with some long cooked belly pork, disappointingly with flabby skin that couldn’t be eaten. There’s also a baton of sarladaise potato which I don’t recall eating before and which was delicious. Similar to dauphinoise potato but even nicer. Which is more than could be said for the cubes of swede which were more raw than “al dente” and, again, couldn’t be eaten. So, the savoury courses had been OK, but we decided that we didn’t want another long wait for dessert that we just knew would not be worth the calories, so just got the bill. Which brings me to my final moan. They add a 10% service charge, which is absolutely fine. But the bill then also has an open tip line. It is, to our minds, an entirely disreputable ruse to sucker unwary customers into effectively double tipping. I thought this practice had died out years back. Shame on them.

After enjoying breakfast in the garden at Rookery Hall in the summer, my mother invited some relatives there for afternoon tea, for her 91st birthday in November. As we were early and waited for the rest of our party to arrive, we were treated to an articulate and entertaining history of the Hall by Eva, who I think may have been the head waitress. She and all the staff we saw we very friendly and pleasant. The tea and coffee were hot and strong and there was a good selection of sandwiches and cakes - the warm scones with cream and jam were especially popular. One of our party provided a birthday cake, which was brought in with the candles lit, with all the staff singing "Happy Birthday". There were no other guests so we had the room to ourselves, but we felt that Mum would still have been made to feel special even if we had had to share the attention. Another nice touch was that boxes were provided to take surplus cakes home. A special afternoon, although expensive.

Did not stay at theHotel but we were invited to dinner by my brother in law while they were staying there overnight. We were rather disappointed in the food overall as it was OK but certainly not to the standard we were expecting. My main criticism concerns the wine glasses on the table in the restaurant. They were the cheapest of cheap small, Paris type goblets which were not appropriate for serving wine that cost £39 a bottle! How can a Hotel of this supposed calibration think that this is acceptable. Would never go there again. We did not see my brother s hotel room but he said it was OK but needed some TLC, certainly not worth the £170 price tag for 1 night b&b

We would like to say a special thank you to the staff at Rookery Hall for all their hard work over the Christmas break. There is a story to tell. We wanted to book for Christmas but had observed some mixed reviews through the summer period. We decided to ring before booking to voice our apprehension in light this. The hotel was convenient for our requirements. The response was professional and accommodating with special thanks to John Murphy and Jessica the Wedding organiser who although the booking was not for a wedding took over and made the booking arrangements very straightforward and was very re assuring. Agnes in the resteraunt was organised and very helpful and a credit to the hotel. The rooms were lovely the food nice and the spa facilities very good. Our party do wish to thank the hotel. There are a few points to mention which would improve the service as it is a shame to hear the mutterings in the lounge which if brought to management attention could make the hotel really stand out. The service in the dining room one evening was exceptionally slow- 2 hours for a meal is a bit much although residents were not in a rush to go anywhere! No towels in the bedroom one day and it took 4 requests by phone over a period of an hour and a half to get some. Breakfast seemed there was a shortage of staff so a long wait. No umbrellas available to walk from the outside rooms to in to the hotel- when wet it would be good if there was an umbrella stand at each point to be able to walk each way without getting wet having dressed for dinner. These are all points we feel are valid some of which were points made by other guests staying at the same time. This will not deter us as the staff worked hard but if the service was sharper this could hopefully mean the inconsistent reviews could become outstanding which for such a lovely venue would be great. We shall return .All staff were very pleasant but not enough of them at varied times .It seemed that Christmas Day lunch service had to work like clockwork as the staff were under pressure. This could give the impression of school dinners which for such a hotel was a bit of a shame.

Beautiful venue with friendly and attentive staff. The food however was not good enough. My smoked salmon starter served with a slice of buttered regular processed brown bread - (£11) - if the chef’s imagination goes no further than dominating the plate with a piece of bread, at least use a quality artisan bread with a side of butter! My wife failed to finish her mackerel starter as it left her feeling ill. My lamb rump main was fine, but served stone cold. My wife’s trout main was served stone cold and the rhubarb was hard. We opted out of sweets. For just a meal out, even-though it’s a lovely place, there must be better places nearby.

The receptionist was very good and took us through to the garden area so we could eat outside. We were waiting a good 10 mins and no one came over so we asked a young waiter for some menus and he wasnt very friendly murmured yes and walked off he has no idea of dealing with clients and making them feel welcome he walked past us spoke to another table and then looked like we were bugging him asking for a menu !!!!!!, another 5 mins later still nothing so I went in and the waiter was serving people at the bar who had come in after us ! That when I started to get annoyed , i then couldnt find any staff at all until I looked through the kitchen doors and a young waitress came out she apologised and gave me two menus , still no one came over and the menu didnt even have the afternoon teas selection on , so after 20 mins we'd had enough and left I really didnt expect that at all and look forward to your reply .We ended up going to the Aquaduct cafe on the marina nearby was served straight away and it cost us a fraction of the price we would have paid at your hotel !

Couldn’t fault the dinner here at all. Five stars for service, quality, presentation and value. One of the best meals for a long time. The only down side was that there wasn’t much time given between courses but this suits many. Truly excellent

The diner is a second class citizen if there is a wedding party at the hotel also. Wine ordered to be told half an hour later it is not available. Overpriced drinks and sauces that one would expect with main courses on offer e.g. pork fillet , expected sauce Apple. Not available.

We decided to visit Rookery Hall to celebrate a graduation in the family. In all eleven of us were in our party. Eight had the afternoon tea and 3 of us with smaller appetites went for the cream tea. All those that had the afternoon tea enjoyed their choice. I was amongst the three who had gone for the cream tea, for my £8 I got a pot of tea (Caramel) a small pot of both cream and jam and two conker sized scones that if I had been inclined, could easily have been eaten in one mouthful. I was told later that they served a cream tea for children, I'm wondering if we were served this instead of the adult version, if we were I'm afraid we were still charged for the adult portions. The bill came to nearly £200.

This is my second visit to this hotel and spa. I can't rate it high enough. The rooms are beautiful. We booked the overnight with spa lunch, 25 minute treatment, 3 course evening meal and breakfast. The rooms are beautiful, special mention to Vernon who shows you to your room from main reception, he is always chirpy, he was exactly the same when I visited last November with my daughter. The food is fabulous with an amazing choice for breakfast. The staff are all lovely and helpful.

We had a two night break staying in the main building. Our room was comfortable but would have benefited from a thorough clean. The bathroom was looking tired with mould on the tiles and flaking paint. There was a stain on the bottom sheet this was eventually changed. We stayed on a B&B; basis. Breakfast was plentiful on both days. The dining room had real character but again required a good clean.

Rookery Hall is what you would expect in terms of environment and price. It is a year since we went and so we went for Valentines Day as somewhere a little special. The food was OK but the starters were bland, certainly nothing special compared with a gastropub. What let this visit down was the lack of welcome and service. Service was slow and unfriendly with long periods of no-one being around. Staff from the bar when asked to find someone explained that it wasn't their area. There was no one keeping an eye on what was happening. The place would benefit from someone in overall control checking that guests were being seen to. We arranged for coffee in the lounge at the end and it didn't come until we had asked 3 waiters to chase it up and 1/2 hour later we were left debating whether just to get the bill and go. So as always I wish I had looked at Tripadvisor for recent reviews first where I would have seen similar to the above ! It will be a while before we risk going again.

We recently dined here to celebrate my in laws 40th wedding anniversary. They had booked a private dining room for a group of 16. The room was lovely with a beautiful view, despite the weather. The staff were excellent, polite and efficient. We had our 3 year old with us for the occasion, they accommodated her well and provided a great kids menu. Special attention was also paid to those of our party with allergies which quickly set minds at rest. Special thanks to Rob who hosted us so well on the day.

What a rip off! This was sold as a prestigious New Year Eve Gala Dinner with 5 course meal with DG, Live band, fireworks etc!Clearly there was only a small attendance due the poor new tears eve the previous year so the evening was put together on a shoe string! The vegetarian option was appalling. Even though pre-ordered the staff had no idea who was a vegetarian on the table and continuously offered the meat option to two veggies on the table. Some of the food was not properly warm and some of the courses were tasteless. There simply was no atmosphere what so ever. The lighting was awful, cold industrial fluorescents which could not be turned down.No real decorations, but all this pales into insignificants when we come to the entertainment. Inept, unprofessional bordering on a shambles. No DJ. Not even a playlist seeing as the music was being run of an I pad!!!!that constantly kept freezing. No fade in or out to the tracks. At 11.45 there was no one dancing the music was flat with gaps in between. The manager on the night did do his best to galvanise the 2 piece band but it simply didn't happen.Dare I mention the Fireworks!!!! someone forgot to set them off or was this another oversight. There was none! another clear misrepresentation! We won't mention the warm wine at the best part of eye watering £45.00 per bottle. What a rip off! This evening was clearly appalling and I will be looking for a full refund as it did not deliver what it clearly advertised!

One of my top 3 places to go for afternoon tea! more than enough food, loose tea was divine! The lady who was waiting on the very full lounge was very attentive and asked a couple of times if we wanted our tea pot refilling. We were also given a glass of prosecco each when we arrived. I will definitely come here again!

I've reviewed the hotel and spa on separately. We dined in the restaurant on our first night as part of the classic spa package. There are seperate menus, one for inclusive guests, one for others. The items on the inclusive menu seemed to be designed around cutting cost. They were far less appealing than the a la carte menu, and were more mass catering than as rosette. Given I'm a foodie I was gutted that the a la carte was an extra £15 per person on top of an already expensive stay. The food itself was ok, but not "knock your socks off" standard - maybe because I was on the standard class menu. The amuse bouche was smoked salmon on a cracker or crisp bread. I guess it had been plated up some time earlier as the crisp bread was not crisp. The service was somewhat chaotic. We, along with the tables around us, were brought amuse bouche even after we'd already had them, and then seemed to be forgotten for nearly 30 mins whilst we waited for mains. The same happened again with the sorbet amuse bouche. It was ok, but not the food sensation I was hoping for.

we went her as we got a package with the hotel for staying one night. The food was really good and of a high standard. The dining room was so much nicer than the other restaurant. The ambience was amazing. Roaring fire, small tables, attentive staff, wooden panelling, guitarist playing away what more could you want? The gluten free options were good as well, there wasn't too much off of the a la carte that we could not have, and then they prepared dishes separately. I went for the fillet and beef rib for main, which was delightful. The fillet was a little tough, but hey you can never know until you try it. But the ribs?? OMG melt in the mouth. The food was surpassed by the knowledge and friendliness of the staff. John the sommelier knew, well I was amazed about how much he knew and had a passion too. If you were ever in doubt what went with what and what you might or might not like wine wise ask - ask him Would use the restaurant again if I was staying at the hotel. Not sure I would go out of my way as it is a little way from anywhere really. But would recommendAs you would expect it is fully accessible for wheelchairs. You'd have to go in through the hotel reception to get there though due to it being an old building. There is a fully equipped disabled toilet as well which is situated a short distance from the dining room.

I came to Rookery Hall to celebrate a friends hen night. We had booked and paid for use of the spa, treatments, lunch and dinner followed by an over night stay. The whole experience was a huge let down - from start to finish. On arrival I was told I wasn't able to check in and therefore had to take my case and coat with me. The trip had been booked for us all for some time yet when we arrived the staff on reception seemed to be very disorganised and so everything was delayed. We were told lunch would be at 12:30 and then my treatment was at 1:30. Our food order wasn't taken until 12:45 so when purchasing food arrived I had to rush. The lady doing bar service clearly had never worked a bar or taken an order in her life. She was slow and got drinks wrong. When our food arrived 4 out of the 12 meals were under cooked. One lady had raw chicken and 3 others had under cooked and hard rice.Again when it was time for my treatment I had to bring all of my belongings (case, coat, scarf and handbag) to the treatment room with me and no one even offered to help store or carry them.My treatment was a back, neck and shoulder massage yet my neck wasn't touched and the whole treatment lasted less than 15 mins - as this was my only treatment I was hugely underwhelmed. The therapist was also very cold and unfriendly. Following the treatment I then gathered all of my things - again and dragged them back through to the spa reception area. Again not one member of staff offered to help store my belongings and so I had to struggle with them to the changing rooms.I also approached reception to ask for a gown and something for my feet and was told that I wasn't allowed one but could have a towel! The most insulting part of this was there were plenty on the reception desk and the rest of my party and other groups were wearing and using them.So far, so NOT relaxing! As I had all my belongings with me I had to try and struggle to fit them all in to a locker in the changing rooms. This was not easy and most inconvenient. The changing rooms floors and toilets were dirty; over flowing bins, dirty floors and tired fittings and fixtures. The pool area with sauna, steam room and jacuzzi was fine. There were plenty of loungers to relax on and the pool is a good size.As the rest of my group were now having treatments I spent this time alone until I was able to check in to my room.I then changed back in to my clothes and struggled with my belongings back to the hotel reception to finally check in and go to my room. The spa experience was so far from relaxing that I just couldn't wait to get to my room to unwind a little. I had asked at reception if I could order some wine for my room and the receptionist explained that there was a list in my room and so I could decide and order from there. The room was a great size. I loved the TV over the bath and the bed was huge (and very comfortable.) I also liked the small yet classy touch of fresh milk in the fridge for tea/coffee instead of the awful long life stuff you normally get in hotels. When arriving in the room I soon found there was no wine list and (strangely) there were bedside lamps with no plug sockets let alone plugs(!?) The room could have done with a hoover as I stood on something sharp a couple of times.I rang down to the bar to ask about wine and when the phone was finally answered (after 2 attempts at calling) a very friendly lady sent someone up to my room with a wine list.I ordered and this was brought in great time and the guy that delivered it was friendly and polite. We had booked a private dining room for our evening meal and so we're excited for this experience. The room was cold and drab and the decor was tired and a little shabby. Our waitress was very nervous and clearly very new to the job. Some champagne had been ordered for the table and once this ran out I ordered another bottle for myself - the waitress proceeded to serve this everyone at the table and I only got one glass - me being second from last in the order she was moving round the table. (Now I agree that this was quite naughty of the group I was with to accept and drink the wine but I "know wine should always be served to the person who orders it first.)I ordered the chicken and chorizo terrine to start and the beef for main. Upon ordering we were also made to decide on our dessert - I found this odd as dessert orders should be taken after your main meal.My starter was both dry and slimey at the same time. The main - while looked great - was served to me cold. I was imagine it had probably sat on the pass for too long, having been prepared too early. There was very little happy between all 3 courses and the whole experience felt rushed.Following the meal we went to the lounge to play games and relax. The decor and appearance of the lounge appeared tired and drab and in need of a refresh. The games provided were incomplete with important parts missing so we ended up making up our own games. It's a small thing but in a 'luxury' hotel I would ensure all of the little touches are up to a high standard. The games are a great idea but pointless if they have integral parts missing. The toilets for the restaurant and bar were untidy and smelly. The bin was overflowing and the floor needed washing.Overall this 'relaxing' stay was ruined for me by a series of small thing that all added up to make it disappointing and sad. This is not a luxury hotel or spa. My advice would be to pick somewhere else if that is what you are looking for!

We used to live in Weaverham and often walked to the Riverside for a drink or food. They used to do 2 main courses for £10 which was good values for money. I know those days are now gone but after our recent visit I don’t think we will be returning. We booked a table for Sunday lunch for 4 people. We ordered drinks which came promptly and then ordered our food. We only ordered 4 mains, fish and chips, sea bass and 2 x steak and ale pies. We waited over an hour for our food, others who arrived after us received their food so we asked how long ours was going to take and were told they were just plating up. 10 minutes later we finally received our food. The fish and chips did look lovely and was a healthy portion size, the pies were well filled but mash potato was a bit on the small side. The main issue was the sea bass. There were 2 small fillets with a few crushed potatoes underneath, a spoonful of frozen peas, 2 green beans and 5 mange tout. Now for £17.95 I expected more. I’m not a big eater or a quick eater but I finished my meal first, and I knew I wouldn’t be full for long. How much do vegetables cost? Surely some carrots and tender stem broccoli wouldn’t break the budget? I did mention this and I was not charged for my alcohol free G&T, but I couldn’t wait to get home and have something to eat, disappointing.

We had about 30 ppl for a small do and they were brilliant letting us come earlier even though half of our party did end up staying to the late! The food was exceptional the steak ale pie was devine and had our guests talking about it for weeks after! Compliments to the chef! Lovely party area, when decorated with balloons and banners it was a really good atmosphere, the bar were happy to play music on Spotify all night. Really spacious and just a really lovely evening. Great hospitality. Deffo worth considering for a function.
