Not our first visit and definitely not our last. We love the tapas style of meals (not Spanish dishes but small bite size portions of everything from venison lollipops to haggis bon bons).

Well… we stayed at the campsite nearby! What a pleasant surprise to have a beautiful, local pub with locals and also people from afar! The staff were amazing, so friendly and attentive - interested in where we’d been before coming to the area. Met the owner (lovely!) and the manager (just as nice!!!). The food… this was another level (and we love our food!)… we had the tapas menu. Couldn’t fault it! We even had our dog with us who was spoilt too! Would HIGHLY recommend. They open from late march for spring/summer/early autumn. Oh… nice little beer garden too. Well… we loved it!

I am very thankful to the staff of House o’ Hill for a meal that elevated a weekend from being really good to superb! It happened to be close to where we were staying and given the reviews we were keen to try it. The other excellent reviews were not wrong. We ate delicious home cooked, locally sourced food, with friendly, attentive and efficient staff. I struggled to choose from the menu because there was such a good choice including vegetarian and dishes of the day. The bill was very reasonable for the quality of the meal, which was plentiful. We left planning our next visit. It is relatively remote but very much worth travelling to. Highly recommended!

My friend and I arrived foot sore and weary after covering some 13 miles of the Southern Upland Way much of which was either big or hard road. I was to be picked up while he was to solo on but we were both hungry and thirsty. Having negotiated something to drink we decided that when my wife arrived we would have a meal. We expected pub food but were surprised and pleased when we saw the menu. Still expecting nothing much in such a remote spot we were amazed when 2 fish stews for my wife and my friend arrived closely followed by a delicious chicken and leek home made pie for me. We ate in silence marveling at the quality and presentation of the food. This would be classed as fine dining in the big city. The puddings arrived sticky toffee ( I know it is a bit naff to have that ubiquitous put but !!!) which was right out of the top drawer home made and unctuous. Our hosts were great fun with lots of chat and jokes and the place was buzzing despite the fact that it was far from anywhere. Top Marks to the House O Hill the food was the best and the cost was considerably less than you would pay in a city restaurant claiming to be high quality but not in the same league as House O Hill. I am trying hard to find an excuse to go back to this little gem. Well done all the staff and compliments to the chef.

Who would have thought you would find such fantastic food in the middle of nowhere? All home-made, all clever and creative and bags of choice! My daughter is vegan and has found that she has struggled to find anything to eat when going out to dine in this area, yet here she didn't only have something to eat, she had lots of options! All of them clever, original and homemade - she opted for the lentil and quinoa 'meatballs' and was blown away - I have to admit I tried them and being a carnivore myself I was really impressed and almost wish I had ordered them myself.... I say almost because I ordered the venison fillet and WOW! I have never seen such a beautiful plate of food. This is fine dining at a fraction of the price and without the pretentiousness! There really was something for everyone, everything from traditional favourites (pies, fish and chips) to fine dining and vegetarian and vegan options - and not token vegan options, every bit of effort was made for their vegan customers as they make for everyone else (which is a lot!) and it was lovely to sit down for a family meal with everyone catered for equally brilliantly. The service was second to none! The staff were serving us in a busy restaurant yet they had all the time in the world for you. This little place has taken social distancing and the COVID 19 pandemic exceptionally seriously, with tables spaced out appropriately, hand sanitiser as you enter the building and keeping the two meter social distancing (they haven't reduced it to 1meter like many places have). We felt completely and utterly safe in the restaurant, which is especially important to us as my wife is classed as 'vulnerable' and has been anxious about going out, yet here, she was able to relax and enjoy herself more than she has anywhere else since the beginning of this dreadful situation. What a shame we only found this venue on the last day of our break or else we would have been here every night. We all absolutely loved our dining experience at this wonderful little place and have decided to book a return trip specifically to come back here . We can't wait to see you all again!

Based on the glowing reviews , we decided to make a significant round trip for dinner. We ordered drinks before being shown to our table. The half pint of local ale which I was given was flat and tasted dreadful. The very enthusiastic lady tried to serve me a livelier drink by holding a pint glass further from the pump and pulling faster - this resulted in a beer that held a watery head for about a minute but was still undrinkable. We were shown to the table and then told that over half the menu was unavailable on Wednesdays and Thursdays - having failed to mention this when we booked or when we walked in. We decided to stay as this is miles from anywhere else to eat.The steak which arrived had been cooked medium rare as ordered but that was the only thing positive I could say about it. Almost impenetrable to a sharp steak knife , the pieces were tough and chewy with connective tissue and sinew throughout - only suitable for stewing. The lady was apologetic and offered to get another one but I'm afraid that by this stage I had no faith that anything would be any better. She came back a few minutes later to apologise that she had served me the wrong type of steak - Flat Iron instead of the Ribeye I had ordered. This missed the point that whatever cut of meat it was , it was inedible. The battered fish was pale to the point of not being cooked .My wife ate a small part of her fish and then offered to pay . Amazingly ,the lady accepted full payment for the fish and chips and the two bottled soft drinks whilst remaining strangely happy throughout this process as though nothing was wrong. The worst experience we have ever had by following a TA recommendation by some distance and we won't be back .

We had a family lunch here to celebrate my wife's birthday. They had Happy Birthday banners up and a free miniature bottle of Prosecco for my wife, which was a nice touch. Sadly from then it was mostly down hill at House O'Hill. I had never had liquid Pâté before this, I have now. I had Venison Pie ( wish I had taken photo)... pastry with 'venison' in the middle and ONE piece of cauliflower on the plate. That was it. With it was a sorry looking small basket of chips. They looked as if they had been reheated from the night before. Value for money....most certainly NOT. On leaving I noticed the board outside boasted " Restaurant Of The Year 2017". I can only assume they were the only entrants last year. Having read some of the great reviews on here since returning, I am now beginning to wonder if I was at the right House O'Hill. Then it went downhill. 2 of us were given the wrong chicken dish (after a looong wait this is), then another wait while the correct meals were prepared. Chicken dinner with all the trimmings, the menu said. Hmm. No mash, no stuffing, not enough gravy, the veg could have fitted on a dessert spoon. Very disappointing and I was still hungry afterwards. The 2 waitresses were pleasant but service was all over the place and there needs to be more organisation. We may have visited when they were having a bad day, but I certainly won’t hurry back. By far the best restaurant in the SW of Scotland, well worth a visit. First class welcome and service from the staff, the menu suits all with additional dishes on the specials board, the food is cooked to a high standard and presented well, we left having enjoyed a tasty meal with plans to revisit very soon. The only drawback is that it is located of the beaten track, however this is a small setback soon forgotten once you start enjoying the menu.

Having read other reviews about this hotel/pub we thought we should give it a try. It was a shame that it is positioned right on the far side of Galloway forest as I think a lot of visitors would be put off making the trip, and as it was we gave up the first day as we realized we would run out of time and there was so much to see and do in a limited time. However the food, although a bit pricey was very well cooked and presented. The best meal we've had all week.

we had an evening meal here whilst staying at the campsite up the road. i can highly recommend the food and the place its self, the menu is excellent and include traditional local foods. if gin is your tipple then this is a must visit as they specialise in it and have many varieties the rhubarb is especially good.

You'll need to go a long road to find a better place to eat. We all (10+) loved every dish - from prawn cocktail starters through braised venison & falafel burgers to salted caramel puddings. Everything was served with cheerful smiles & passing pats for our dogs. Amazing place & can't rate it highly enough.
