The King's Arms Hotel Courtyard Restaurant in Dumfries & Galloway

Turned up today, Saturday, at 2.15pm as we regularly , up until now did , for soup and a toastie - was told that lunch stopped at 1.45pm- excuse me isn’t that during lunchtime 😡. Won’t be back ever in case I arrive too late for lunch again. Disappointing rural hospitality and hostelry.

Very friendly staff. Great range on the menu, very good value for money. Friendly atmosphere. Would definitely visit again.

Great stay at King's Arms in Castle Douglas. We were made to feel so welcome. Had food in the evening which was fantastic. Breakfast was amazing. Great choice of ingredients and Pauline went out of her way to offer me an alternative as I have an allergy. Recommend to everyone. See you again, hopefully soon.

Staff were friendly, pleasant atmosphere and able to get a table without booking. Portions were huge. The person I was with ordered the chicken curry and was disappointed as there was very little curry flavour, with lots of tomatoes and onions more like a Spanish style dish.

We have just been here as a family of four adults. I cannot rate this place highly enough!! We were staying in a lodge not too far away but self catering. Now self catering for me means eating out. I'm a full time carer to disabled family members so someone else making my meals on a rare break from home is very important and these guys did not disappoint!! The menu is not pages and pages long but still gives a good variety of food, and what food!! Their chef Mike is a magician!! The food was simply gorgeous and there was no skimping on portions sizes either!! I still didn't find out how he cooked his braised steak in that pie but it just melted!! Absolutely gorgeous!! We ate here for three nights, didn't need to go anywhere else!! The staff were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble even on the nights we hadn't booked!! We booked on the last night!! An outstanding experience all round. Thank you guys..you made a massive chunk of my holiday, no cooking, fabulous food, a chef who works his magic and fabulous food......what more could you ask for!!!! 😋

Had a lovely meal last night to celebrate my birthday, food excellent, service 100% and staff friendly couldn't do enough. Would highly recommend this place for a meal or even a drink.

Out here on Christmas eve and found the usual friendly atmosphere compounded by the Xmas spirit in the air. The menu is reasonably limited but this is perhaps a strength as you can rely on your favourites being available. The desserts are especially good.

We were recommended to dine out at the Kings arms in Castle Douglas by Eric, the owner of our holiday cottage, and we are glad that he did. The weather was terrible so we arrived early, to get out of the heavy rain. The staff could not have been more friendly and welcoming. As we had not eaten since breakfast, we had starters, main and desert. The meal was very nice, one of the tastiest that we have had, and very reasonably priced. We had two well behaved dogs that were very well catered for. Thank you and we look forward to visiting and sampling the menu again. Brian and Michelle.

We went twice to The King's Arms for supper, the food is home cooked, delicious. Staff are wonderful, helpful and so friendly. Pauline the Landlady is very professional and helpful. Lovely local pub.

Had our evening meal at the Kings Arms, we found the staff very friendly and the food was very well cooked and just what we needed after a day out exploring the area.

Used on couple of occasions while staying in Castle Douglas. The hotel decor is a bit dated with tartan carpets but has friendly and helpful staff. Big portions of food which doesn't always suit everyone. We hate waste and would like the idea of smaller portions for elderly. Chose to have Sunday dinner here as the other hotel didn't do a roast dinner on a Sunday. Think they are all missing an opportunity here. Lovely lamb my husband had with all trimmings and I chose a salmon and prawn salad. Nice to be offered potatoes and not come with chips with everything.

We went there for a meal and were made very welcome. And our dog was also made welcome. Lentil soup was excellent and the Rob Roy chicken with haggis in a creamy onion and mushroom sauce was to die for......almost worth driving all the way from the south of France for!!!

We ate here on our visit to Castle Douglass all I can say is the food was good and the portions great well worth a visit.

The restaurant is quite large but you can eat in the bar area. We chose the restaurant. Hot food was delicious, especially the fish pie. You won't leave hungry! Good service, too.

Stayed in the area for a long weekend for business, was recommended the King's Arms so gave it a whirl, was so good went back on our last night. Was greeted by welcoming and happy staff, who showed us to a table in the bar area as we brought our dog, immediately made a fuss of him to settle him and brought a bowl of water. The menu had plenty of variety, suitable for all. I am vegetarian and had the vegetable curry, best curry I've had for ages. The desserts proved a hard choice, tried the rhubarb, raspberry sponge with custard which was absolutely awesome. Returned a few nights later, the staff recognised us and the dog and made us extremely welcome. my wife had lamb chops and I had asparagus tortellini, both excellent. Very generous portions and good prices. Very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere throughout. We will definitely return, cannot fault anything about The Kings Arms.

Popped into The Kings Arms purely by accident. What a pleasant surprise. It was almost full with diners but we were found a table and had a super lunch at a great price. Great value and brilliant service.

I had lunch at the King arms Hotel today and on arrival I was warmly greeted. The staff was very welcoming and the service was very quick and efficient. My waitress Victoria Was very polite and helpful. The food the very nice. I would definitely recommend and go there myself again.

Five of us had dinner to celebrate a birthday. A very comprehensive menu with something for everyone. If you have any intolerances they are happy to accommodate you. Starters included scallops, crisping brie wedges and of course haggis. Main courses included steaks, fish and pasta. The scampi was delicious, served with veg and chips, new potatoes available as well. We had to skip dessert, all of us full.

When we called into the hotel to see if we needed to book a table the girl on the desk was most helpful, we all enjoyed our Sunday evening meal there whilst on our holiday staying at nearby Auchencairn

The Chips only are worth the visit superb not sure how the chef makes them so tasty.

Visited last night with our friend who lives in Castle Douglas and can honestly say we had the best food we've had in ages. There was a choice of two menus with the opportunity to have food from either or both - great variety. My Moroccan Lamb was exceptional, full of flavour and good quality meat. My companions had Chicken Curry and both said it was really good.

Tuve la hamburguesa de bistec que fue una gran decepción. La hamburguesa era de dureza y sirve básicamente desnudos en un panecillo con tres rondas de cebollas fritas. Ya que venía con una pequeña ensalada, la ensalada y pila hizo comestible, pero justo. Que nos rendimos a la mitad como demasiado seco y sin sabor. Postre compensado por las cenas. Compartimos un flan de jengibre con helado y una salsa que era absolutamente sillones fenomenal. El servicio también era variable. La camarera no era especialmente atento, pero el gerente del restaurante era genial ver a sus necesidades. Volver al Castillo Douglas le busca otro lugar para la próxima comida.

Regularly call into the Kings for a pint, if we are passing. Don't often eat in town, but decided to last week, and as usual, the meal was fantastic. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Although it was very busy, they apologised before hand in case of a wait, but in the end, I felt service was very prompt. Best gammon steak I have had in a long time, and the chips are fantastic!

Best meal we have had in Scotland. Highly recommend the Beef Stroganoff. All the food was great. Chips were amazing. The decor is old fashioned but quaint. Staff were so helpful and friendly.

Called in for something to eat in the evening and it was a good decision. There was a limited vegetarian choice on the menu but the chef offered to make us some mushroom stroganoff served with rice and it was really delicious. It was a relaxed pub atmosphere and the staff were friendly and efficient. I would certainly go there again.

We stayed at the Kings Arms for 5 nights in May this year. David organised all the golf for us at some great courses. The sun shine all week and we had a great time. All the staff were superb, very helpful and friendly. Rooms are very comfy. An excellent option for a golf holiday.

We want to thank you and your staff for the way that you accommodated our group at very short notice, provided excellent meals and generally kept calm whilst guests were late arriving and some of us created even more (wet) havoc. Everyone enjoyed the evening, the meals and atmosphere – so very well done.

Go regularly to this hotel for bar meals and evening dining and have never been disappointed. The hotel staff are welcoming and attentive, and the hotel has a friendly busy atmosphere.

Was an invited guest and was taken here for an evening meal. The starters for the price were not up to par with the standards of some other restaurants in CD, the soup was bland, the roll served with it was not warm, not very fresh and was served with a flora pat rather than butter, another person had the scallops that were advertised as sautéed in coriander, lime and butter, they were served barely warmed through, no taste of coriander and the lime was non-existant, had to send them back to be cooked longer. One person had the Caledonian chicken dish, the vegetables were cooked to within an inch of their lives and not very appealing on the plate, one of the deserts was served a strawberry/parfait sundae, the strawberries tasted as if they were tinned, not fresh at all. For the price of the menu and the food listed, it was far under par with other restaurants in the area, very disappointed and have to say would not bring anyone visiting here for a meal. It is too bad as this restaurant has been around for a very long time.

Meals in the restaurant were okay and reasonably priced, but we did have a language problem with one of the waitresses which resulted in some of the food orders coming back completely wrong, especially at breakfast.

My friend said she had one of the best curries she had ever tasted. My lamb meal, however, can only be described as average. The service was friendly and quite fast. The cost of the meals was not excessive.

As locals we eat out here several times a year. Food is always excellent home cooked local produce at a reasonable price. Staff are friendly and very helpful. Hotel has a great atmosphere with a good mix of locals and visitors.

Was recommended this hotel for food by staff at Threave gardens and the food was as good as they said. Excellent smoked salmon to start followed by delicious mushroom ravioli. The ravioli came with chips but you would need to be really hungry to do it all justice.

Our waiter Darragh was superb! The food was lovely, great atmosphere and I would recommend for group dinners. Only downfall is the prices are rather high.

Liked the atmosphere, friendly and unintimidating, lots of locals around. Food was nice the first time I went there but was even better when I stayed in Castle Douglas for second time a week later.

Four of us walked down to this hotel for an evening meal. We had not booked and it was the middle of Feb but the bar was half full and there were quite a few people eating. We ate in the bar. The food was very good (about £10 per main and £5 for starters) hot and plentiful.The hotel public rooms - bar and decor are quite dated but its clean with a nice atmosphere.

Went along for a pre-christmas lunch not knowing what to expect. Had been in the hotel only a couple of times, but never for a meal. The haggis starter was very good, the sauce was perfect. The main course of Boeuf Bourguignon was absolutely spot-on, lots of it and beautifully cooked. Couldn't face a dessert as the portions of the first two courses were generous.

Stayed here in November, b&b, for one night. The bedrooms where wonderfully decorated, bed was fantastically comfy, and bathroom was very spacious. The staff were very helpfulland efficient. Only one wee hickup, not disable friendly, but if you can manage a few stairs then youll be ok.

Four of us ate here for two successive nights in October and every starter and main course was excellent. I have eaten once before earlier this year and I was equally impressed again. Great choice, very well presented and very tasty. As soon as we had eaten on the Friday, we booked again for the next night, which turned out to be a good idea as it was busy. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the town or area.

Had a sirloin steak which was tough and tasteless. No choice of veg - I got cooked tomato which I dislike and had not asked for. There are much better places to eat in the area.

The first was a Saturday, we went before six thirty and got a table without booking. The place quickly filled up but the service very good, my wife and I were both pleasantly surprised by this, any request we had was quickly dealt with. We found the food very good and reasonably priced with quite an extensive menu. We went back on the Sunday evening, it was much quieter but food and service were both very good.

Great food reasonable price. Scallop starter is good with good ales and friendly staff. We had a lovely meal. There was nothing to dislike.
